  • It's been called Switch 2, NX2, the next Nintendo console... but a rumour has given it the title Switch Attach. In this video, we take seriously the possibility that it could be true because there is something i the concept of attaching that just makes a huge amount of sense.

      @@stripedrajang3571The fact that people thought the Wii U was just an "update" or "accessory" to the Wii was disastrous. It was a major reason why it didn't sell very well. People who already owned a Wii didn't think there was any reason to upgrade. Therefore, it doesn't make any sense to say that it's "crazy enough to work" because the last time it borderline ruined the system.

      I feel like it's definitely less vague than 'Wii U', what did the U stand for? I'm sure I could google it but considering what you got out the box, it wasn't obvious what the selling point was from the name. Whereas at least the attach in switch attach means, well, you attach something (assumingly). It's less vague than them using a name like "Switch 2" "Switch Super/Super Switch".

  • @DarrenBridger

    I think you are bang-on. Nintendo have almost certainly been thinking along these lines. The hardcore Nintendo fans mostly just want more power, but I don’t think that will enable them to rapidly grow the market with more casual players like they did in the (3)DS/wii era. Nor will it protect them against the competition. Like you pointed out, there are other devices already encroaching into the Switch’s territory. Who knows what else might become available in the next few years. Even if they don’t call it the ‘switch attach’, the most likely area for them to add on some new proprietary experience IMHO would be to have some kind of new input control. Also, a few years back they were talking a lot about ‘quality of life’ applications. Ways of game-ifying health and wellness. I can see something like that expanding the market while still allowing them to have a more power to please the hardcore gaming community. But if the only difference between the Switch 2 and the Switch is more power, it will focus the whole conversation onto a comparison of Switch 2 with XBOX and PS, and they can’t win that fight.

  • @Stephen-Fox
    @Stephen-Fox Před 2 měsíci +3

    One thing I'd note on second screen as an attachment is that the Switch already has some ability to detect if another switch is near, and where it is physically oriented relative to it, as demonstrated in Super Mario Party's toad house minigames. Most notably the banana minigame where the aim is to place the two switches in the correct orientation with each other to make a complete banana.
    It is entirely... If disturbingly... Plausible for me for the Switch 2's handheld mode to have a slot to attach an original Switch as a second screen to it, or to use a Switch as a controller for a Switch 2 when docked in some games. Despite that risking the confused messaging around the Wii U where people didn't seem sure if it was a new system or an addon for the Wii, and same with the 3ds having some market confusion if it was a new system or a new model of DS (and, I'd be nervous about the Switch 2 being called the Switch Attach for that reason)

It is also interesting how the joycons are a compromise between the Wii Remote+Nunchuck, Wii U Gamepad/Switch Lite and the Pro Controller. Permanently attached controllers are better if there is no stick drift however the additional flexibility offered by the joycons are incredible, however they still do not incorporate every feature from the Wii Remote and the comfort is not that of an Pro Controller.

    I am hoping the follow up to switch adds two new play modes to go alongside the existing handheld, TV and tabletop modes. These would be; streaming to the TV for dual screen (local split screen across 2 screens, asynchronous games like nintendo land), and VR (imagine when paired with screen streaming, asynchronous local multiplayer VR games).
    The main appeal of the switch to me is it's ability to offer so many different kinds of experiences. You can play big games on the TV, small games in bed, exercise with ring fit or just dance, Nintendo Labo is a wild and interesting game, play touch screen games, motion control games. Having the flexibility to play all these types of games in the ways you'd hope to play them make the switch a great device to invest in. As someone who seeks diverse experiences from games I can say I have appreciated being able to play in all the ways i've listed above. I am hoping with the successor to switch 2 I can add VR and asynchronous multiplayer to that list!

    While i'm not convinced Nintendo will attempt all of these ideas for their next system (VR in particular is something that Nintendo are incredibly interested in but just havent found a cheap enough, accessible way to make it appeal to the masses.. yet) i do love some of the ideas you've put together here; particularly the hand tracking stuff, which feels completely in line with Nintendo's past successes in lowering barriers to play such as the initutive, simplified controls on Wii/DS, and Switch's ability to adapt around your living situation.
    I also 100% agree that it makes sense for Nintendo to continue to innovate for their next system which will carry them into the early 2030s, rather than stick with the same proposition that will have had out in the market for 8 years by the time the NG system launches.

    Nintendo is so bad at accessibility. They want you to do things one way because they think it's the best way. For example, in mario galaxy the host levels with only motion controls really sucked. It made me stop playing that game.

    switch attach sounds like something of an accessory and not a name for a console, at least i hope not since it would be another wii u situation. Something like mentioned in ur last vid about how nintendo can branch out into different adjacent products like they've done this gen but even more. Since i expect an evolution to the switch, i agree nintendo will focus on more ways to use ur system. As pointed out similarly to the 3ds while keeping it fundamentally a better switch for hardcore fans with docking, undocking, and tabletop as usual, you add a integrated feature like a dual screen that allows u not just the obv DS style but a Wii U? Basically u can use the second screen as a gamepad. The Wii U while called a prototype switch was also a home console version DS tbh. So games like Nintendo land or Xenoblade X that utilized the gamepad will be easier to port over. And while we've seen how they handle their handheld ports, this would allow them to further transition those over especially when a NSO online for DS comes. And like the 3d feature, it wont be used on all games prob only nintendo's first party for the most part (and hopefully more common too) since it's an optional feature which gives third parties the option to ignore and treat the next console as a switch. Having it as a integral part of the system would just discourage both consumers and developers so Nintendo treating it as a contemporary would be enough

    I would like a switch that could connect not only to my tv but to my pc, and allow me to stream my games on discord without the need of a video capture recorder, not much of a change but an upgrade.
    What about a console with movable parts? Like a rubicks cube, something you could play with outside of the videogame. Maybe the parts themselves could be handles.

    • @FactswithKat
      @FactswithKat Před 2 měsíci

      Without additional software on your PC, That is not really possible. The general population have GPUs that are only HDMI/DP out, so you need an additional capture card. They COULD theoretically make a program that would get input from the switch when connecting through USB, but that is not exactly something Nintendo would do

      Nintendo could do exactly that. Wii U had a proprietary miracast that necessitated the home console, but it was a brilliant technical solution for streamed video and controls that pre-empted the surprise success of PS Portal.
      If Nintendo has been working for a long time with monitor manufacturers, this miracast recipient doesn't really need to be on a Nintendo console, it can jsut be licensed to smart TV manufacturers.
      TSMC just opened a huge Kumamoto JASM manufacturing plant, that could do just such a thing. Video operating chip that could create Digital AR for monitors, in other words, just have characters walk right into another device. The cumbersome feedback loop of camera footage to create AR is not really necessary, but imagine if you could compute individual CHARACTERS on some portable device that can stream them onto any monitor in your house, and recognize what software is playing on THAT monitor already. It could be Miiverse for your complete digital universe. Any tablet with the chip could be a window to the Pikmin living digitally all over your home, in a fictional cyberspace simply mapped to locations in real life.
      Also, Nintendo would then with these TV manufacturers move past the HDMI monopoly, which was actually a huge factor in their previous consoles, same as CD licensing. This kind of technology could be the next step to make HDMI outdated like RCA. True local wireless, the video equivalent of Bluetooth audio. Sony is definitely researching this avenue with Playstation Link subsuming any bluetooth functions.

    4:36 I'm so glad I learnt how to replace the joysticks on my joycons. Takes all of 5 minutes to open them up and put a new one in, plus a couple minutes for calibration. It’s been saving me so much money and grief. It’s sad Nintendo have thrown their history of build quality away with the Switch. My old GBA and Gamecube still work just as well as the day I bought them, but I've replaced my joycon joysticks half a dozen times now.

There are some REAL horror stories out there, and real property is CONCENTRATED risk unlike the diversification you get in a broad index fund.

    If they want to try and make a gimmick for hardware, that is fine, but the switch allowed for millions upon millions of people to enjoy their IPs who never had before. All's I know is the next console needs to be able to support 3rd party games, and Nintendo needs to release quality first party software like they did for the switch. I think if they focus on software, they will continue the success of the switch.
