The difference between a sports jacket and a blazer is that a sports jacket is patterned while a blazer is usually a solid. I say usually because sometimes there is piping on the lapels and/or hip pockets of a blazer. And blazers are often dark blue but not always. Green is a fairly common color.

My own personal style is kinda like business casual or smart casual so I love sports jackets as it’s versatility in creating great looking outfits works great for me. I currently have 3 sports jackets and may expand that to 4 or 5 in the future.
I only ever wear suits for formal events that call for them like weddings or funerals.

I had a dark gray jacket with subtle non-white pinstripes, collars like a suit jacket, two large open/close black buttons, minimal shoulder padding, the lining was a deep red burgundy silk type material... it was my favorite jacket, I outgrew it with age and have wondered about getting a custom one made. What might it be, the top half of a suit, a blazer or sports jacket?

Usually (not always) pinstripe jackets are part of a suit.
Any other pattern like houndstooth, checks or herringbone can be either from a suit or a sports jacket.

Speaking of Navy - With a slightly textured non shinny fabric - I have a hard time distinguishing between a navy suit jacket, navy sports jacket, and a navy blazer. Especially if all have notch lapels and soft shoulders. Sure - brass buttons would absolutely say traditional blazer , or peak lapels suit jacket, but other wise it seems nit picky. Then we could get in to Spezzato which is deliberately mixing suit jackets with other pants !

Great choice. I wear safariu jackets more frequently than a sportscoat as well.
