    I couldn't be a watercolor artist with out WC pencils. Well... not a proficient one. Water color is notorious for being difficult in fine details, I can use WC pencils to add needed details for a realistic piece. Sure I could use a pen or pencil or even regular colored pencils, but then you technically have a mixed media piece, and not just a water color painting. Also some of those other mediums dont mix well with wc, and may not be archival.

    I have found that very dry environments, such as high desert where I live, can make traditional watercolor painting techniques challenging due to rapid drying, especially when doing wet on wet. Water color pencils are a remedy.

    • @ErikaLancasterArt
      @ErikaLancasterArt  Před rokem +1

      Hey, there! Thanks so much for checking this one out and for sharing about your experience with watercolor and watercolor pencils. This is very true! I live in a very warm, very dry environment in northern Mexico. I find, for wet-on-wet effects to happen as I want them to, I need to take my time with pre-wetting with clean water. And I also need to work fast, as well as make sure I'm using enough water in my color mixtures. It can be tricky for sure! I'm glad that you've found a medium that you enjoy and that works for you. Cheers!

    Thank you so much for sharing this! One thing I've had a hard time finding is information about the differences between watercolor paints and pencils. I've been using watercolor paint in my Hobonichi journal with success, but I feel like pencils may be better as they use a bit less water, so maybe there will be less page wrinkling. Thanks again, this was an excellent and helpful tutorial!

    I got some watercolor pencils to try out because I thought it would be easier to get into watercolor with them, but the more I play around with them the more I wish Ihad just started with paint haha. It is probably because I am more used to painting (acrylics though) than colored pencils.

      Hey, there! Thanks so much for checking this one out. :) You make a great point! Using pencils is so different from using a paintbrush. There's a learning curve involved for sure. But if you already know how to paint, there are lots of skills (such as color mixing) that you can bring into your watercolor pencil work, so you're not starting at 0! There's a great amount of understanding you already have. It took me a while to warm up to watercolor pencils, but I find them pretty fun now! 😁🙌

    Beautiful! Fabulous explanation. What is the best brand of watercolor pencils?

    • @ErikaLancasterArt
      @ErikaLancasterArt  Před 2 lety +2

      A few great options for professional watercolor pencils are: Faber-Castell's Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencil line, Derwent's Watercolor Pencils line and Caran D'ache Museum Aquarelle Watercolor Pencils.
      Professional level watercolor pencils can be pretty pricey. Because they are my "secondary" medium (I'm also primarily a traditional watercolor paint user), I invest in smaller professional sets or larger student-grade sets. Some of my latest watercolor pencil tutorials have been filmed using Faber-Castell's Goldfaber Aqua, which is their student line. The color payoff is great and colors do blend well, but I have found that a couple of the pencils I've used keep breaking when I sharpen them, which is pretty annoying. 😐
      It does depend on your budget and what's comfortable for you. :) It's a great medium to explore as it's so versatile!

    I'm primarily using watercolors and not all colors can be lifted fully. Is it the same with watercolor pencils?

    • @ErikaLancasterArt
      @ErikaLancasterArt  Před rokem +1

      Hey, there! Great question! It's very similar. You can lift a small amount of paint off the paper (either when it's still wet or after it has completely dried), by doing *gentle* scrubbing and absorbing with a towel. You won't be able to go back to the whiteness the paper had when it was new, but you'll be able to remove some of it. How much you're able to lift does depend on the type and quality of paper that you're using, the specific pigment, and also the quality of watercolor pencils.
      Hope this helps! Enjoy your art practice. :) Thanks so much for watching!

    I'm new to watercolor pencil art, how do I get a more vibrant color?

    • @ErikaLancasterArt
      @ErikaLancasterArt  Před rokem +1

      Hello! A few quick tips I have for you to get more vibrant color are: a) make sure you're using quality watercolor pencils as the color payoff is better, b) if you are using decent quality watercolor pencils try layering on more pigment on paper before activating with water, c) make sure you're not blending very different colors together (if you blend a neutral with another color, or two Complementary colors together, these will mute each other down and possibly create a muddy color). Hope these tips help! Thanks for watching. :)
