In this week's video, I explain the difference between technical and creative skills, why both are important for artists looking to create original art, and provide practical tips that will help you grow in both areas. 👩‍🎨
It's essential to understand how these two skill types are different and how to practice each because, if one is ignored, you'll likely hit walls with your art or will have trouble creating work that is your own.

    Thank you for this video. This is a message I have delivered time and again. I am a sugar flower artist, and I am often told, "Oh you're so talented!" I always take this as the compliment it is meant to be, but I still don't like hearing it. I was not born with any artistic "talent" at all. What I achieve artistically is 100% the result of continual and deliberate study and learning, tons of practice, and long periods of trial-and-error. In other words, my creativity is solely the result of hard work. And this is fabulous news! Because it means that anyone and everyone can be creative and make art, whether they have any "talent" or not.

      Hi, Hannah! Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to leave your thoughts. 🙌 I agree and can relate with what you share. A lot of people give drawing or painting a try for a week and decide it's not for them or that they must be lacking the artistic gene (and won't ever have it), so they never touch art supplies again. I think this is a huge mistake. I, too, was not born with any artistic "gifts", nor did I have any artists in the family. I pursued it anyway because it was always in my heart and, I tried regular full time jobs for many years in my life, which always left me exhausted and depressed. So I gave into this path full force. ❤

      That is fantastic! 👏🎉 It's so smart to practice those different elements in isolation so that you have the techniques down when you use them in more "complete" pieces. I ruined soooo many landscape paintings by adding trees without practicing them first! 😄

    learned so much! thanks! you made it easy- well explained! I wonder thou, why do u need the grid if u can line up the corners with the center dot? also - if you are drawing a room without the ruler, it seems it would be much harder?? how do u without the ruler? as if u are sketching a room in a sketchbook..it is a matter of practice until you see it? thanks again...

    • @ErikaLancasterArt
      @ErikaLancasterArt Před 12 dny

      Glad this one was helpful, Deborah! ❤ You don't have to draw all the lines if you don't need them. Sometimes, for explanation purposes, I want to make the grid clear for people to understand how all lines go straight to the vanishing point, which is why I draw the lines. Once you understand how to use 1-Point Perspective, you can only draw the lines you actually need, making sure to align your ruler to the vanishing point. Drawing freehand (without a ruler) is definitely harder. This said, if drawing freehand is your goal, eventually I would recommend drawing without a ruler. It takes practice to be able to draw straight lines without a ruler. It's just practice. ❤ One tip would be to draw your lines using a ruler with pencil first, as lightly as possible, then draw over them without a ruler. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks for watching!

    • @ErikaLancasterArt
      @ErikaLancasterArt Před 12 dny

      Hi, Deborah! ☀3D Form and Perspective are, in my opinion, the most challenging of art fundamentals, yet essential for drawing because they are present in everything. It does require understanding of many things such as how your vantage point (and head level) changes what you see, and understanding 1, 2, and 3 point perspectives (especially 1 and 2 points) and everything that comes with them (vanishing points, converging lines, planes, horizon lines, etc.). I would never start with a drawing like the one I am sharing in this video, because there is a lot going on and lots of edges of planes are covered by elements, so you need to make up for the information you're lacking. When I start with students, I first explain 1 point perspective and 2 point perspective, and have them draw basic 3D forms using these grids (cubes, rectangular, prisms, cylinders, etc.). We then draw objects, and still life arrangements, where they have to bring in their understanding of form and perspective to draw the objects on hand. Only after they've shown they understand how form and perspective works in objects, do I have them draw fuller scenes. And even then, I have them start on 1, 2, and 3 pt perspective grids. We then take these skills and connect them with scenes in reference photos or scenes they have in front of them in real life. This sequence is part of my drawing curriculum that I go through with my one-on-one students. It has always helped them move forward with form and perspective in a less overwhelming way and gets them faster results. I have sequential classes on all this where I share exercises and workshops over on my Patreon ($15), if you're ever interested. 👉www.patreon.com/erika_lancaster_artist Hope this helps! 🙌

    Yesss, being able to appreciate the little things through paying attention is such a powerful benefit. I can't believe how just walking around the same seemingly unchanged neighborhood listening and looking at the surroundings could actually be interesting and feel so good... To me the best things about art as a practice are seeing the world in a different way-with more depth, learning about the world and myself, and improving or maintaining the ability to be present in the moment. I started learning to draw & paint a year ago at age 30 kind of all of a sudden as I had never been interested in visual arts and I was TOTALLY clueless about anything related to it.

    Erika thank you for all your videos and tutorials. I can agree with you that art ant kind of art is very therapeutic. I too used anything i could get my hands on growing to draw and create. I remember loving to draw garfield the cat with a simpke ball point pen and i just loved charcoal pencils for drawing. When it came time to go to college my family discouraged me from pursuing a career in it and insit on business classes like economics ir accounting. So i put my drawing skills aside until I started experiencing vision loss due to diabetic eye damage and started to fall into a deep depression. I remember going for a walk one sunny winter’s day and passing by a dollar store and passed by their art section and buying an oil pastel set and little oil paint kit with sine brushes and a cheap little kids watercolour set and drawing paper all for about $10 and using these products slowly got me out of my slump and found peace and joy and calm just from creating. Luckily i still have enough vision to be able to sketch and draw and paint in a bold expressive style. Fine details is way too difficult for me since i can no longer read fine print or details but bring able to express myself has litterally helped save my life and emvrace what i can still do instead of my limitations. Thank you again for all your inspiring videos on here.
