Hi Michele - Could you please advise, re: mixed media: What fixative do you suggest to fix watercolor pencil, that hasn't been activated with water, that's been used on top of watercolors? (Dorland's Wax makes the non-activated watercolor pencil run.) Thank you!
PS can't you also use regular pensils instead of watercolor ones?
Hi Michele! Absolutely love watercolor pencils, mostly use them for small details on still life watercolor paintings.
I also find them more forgiving on less expensive papers. A friend of mine only uses watercolor pencils for his architectural drawings. Thank you for your wonderful video. Take care.
Love your beautiful flower painting. I just want to draw with watercolor pencils. I am trying yo learn how to use without watercolors themselves. I am glad to find your channel. 😊
I’m such a beginner (87 yrs. old in Texas)
in watercolor and I think you are an outstanding instructor. Thank you. You make it look so easy and your reasoning how you make the colors work is so understandable.
Thanks so much 😊 Just a youngster you are!
So pleased I found you on CZcams. I'm 75 and have just started to learn how to draw. I found your tutorial most helpful and have learned a great deal, so thank you I am really enjoying myself now and my paintings are improving. Looking forward to watching more of your tutorials
Glad I could help Ian!
Ian have you bought a lot of supplies yet or are just doing the drawing part now.
@@Megzamani sorry for the delay in answering. I bought a box of paints, brushes and water colour pencils from Lidl, quite enjoying myself.
@@ianjamieson6521 I haven't painted this week. I think I want to try acrylic . Thank you for the reply.
Pretty soon my brain will explode with all the new things I'm learning from you. Can't wait to get my new pencils (ones you had in description) and get started. Details are going to be easier and better than ever. Thank you, Michele.
I am not responsible for exploding brains lol, but glad you are finding lots of info!
I just LOVE my set of Aquarelles! I just HAD to have them. My dad surprised me with the beautiful wooden box of 76 pencils. I am playing around with them. I feel like a little kid again! I'm going to the hospital soon for major surgery and will be there for quite awhile--so I'll bring a few basic colors and my brushes there and see what I come up with.
Very much a beginner and found this very useful, much clearer what I am supposed to be doing
Glad it was helpful!
I just finished my first painting done solely with watercolor pencils! I enjoyed the process. At the beginning of COVID, I started working with colored pencils and coloring books. I did 50 or 60 pages and although I had some watercolor pencils, it didn't occur to me to use them with water. I had done a significant number of watercolor paintings years ago solely with watercolor paints. I'm so grateful that you have shown me another way to make art.
That's great Sharon!
Just about to try pencils for the first time.
Gosh, no matter what question I have I’m always so happy to find that you have a video on it. Thank you so much for your videos.
This is by far the best tutorial on water colour pencils and combining them with water colour paints. Thank you for giving me the confidence to get started.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Shirley I am 73 and new to this also. I was born and raised in Tahoka Texas and raised on cotton farm. I now live in Crescent City CA.
Thank you for this WONDERFUL video!!!! I was so afraid at first and you made it seem easy peazy!!
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing grip on the subject dear Michele. I couldn’t help but subscribe.
I appreciate that!
thanks. i have heard the museum ones sure are nice. I want to buy one set and trying to decide how many to get.
Was gifted a set recently - thank you for this lesson - I will do a color swatch in the morning - thank you 🙏
Hope you enjoy it!
Best tutorial I’ve seen on watercolor pencils. The thing that really clicked for me is how you demonstrated that the technique you use for swatching is also a great technique to use during the actual paintings. I know if I practice, I will understand the medium much better now. Thank you 🙏💙🌵
Thanks Delphine so glad you liked it 🙏
So agree!
Very good instruction. I'm glad I found this channel.
Glad you enjoy it!
Very wide range of ideas, thank you
There is something very relaxing and pleasing about your presentation style, as well, of course, as the informative content.
So nice of you thanks!
Thank you! A friend just gifted me a small set of watercolor pencils. I am so looking forward to using some of the techniques that you have shown here!
Have fun!
Great! I was gifted 2 sets of good quality pencils and had no idea how to use them. Now I have a good starting point! Thanks!
You have a very nice style of teaching!
Thank you! 😃
Needed this tutorial on pencils!
After 2 years of watching many teachers, I feel I need to stick with you. I haven,'t done anything, I just keep watching more videos. You have a better way of reaching me. I still hesitate to pick up all the supplies I have accumulated. But I will.
Wow, thank you! You can do it. Mistakes don't matter, they teach us what not to do next time.
Thank you for this video. I'm going back to watercolors, and am considering purchasing some sort of watercolor pencils. You're the first one who explained what Inktense is: INK. I had no idea! Enjoy watching you from the USA.
Thx as always Michele. I’ve got some watercolor pencils so I’ll have to try them soon. 🥰
No worries Alicia ☺️
Oh wow I can’t wait to receive my new 24 Winsor & Newton Watercolor Pencil set to get started on adding some watercolor pencils work to my paintings next week. This is definitely a wonderful video for beginner watercolor pencils that explains supplies, differences in the variety of pencils, swatching pencils (which I would have never thought about), and amount of water necessary. I’m glad you broke down the information on this medium for us. Thanks for sharing this with us.
No problem Colleen I am sure you will love the pencils ☺️
I eased into watercolor with watercolor pencils, and still bring out them for drawing shapes and other effects combined with standard watercolors, as you gave examples. And yes I've dipped them into water directly to use in a background for mottled effects, applied to a wet area they can create lovely blasts of strong color for texture and multi-color areas. Though it tends to be fine textured, shaving a dry watercolor pencil into a wet area is another way to create texture...using an old nail file or rough sandpaper, the little flakes will make irregular splatter looking effects. The Derwent Inktense pencils are great for tree branches-limbs-stems, anytime you want a line that won't budge with additional layers or for finishing touches.
They are very versatile aren't they!
Thank you. I have watercolour pencils but have wondered how to use them.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, I thoroughly enjoy your direction!
I'm so glad!
Thanx Michele, as a complete beginner I've always struggled with color swatching of my watercolor pencils, now I know why..and I realized the difference between ordinary pencils and artist pencils..my ones are so paler but anyway good for practice..😊🌹
Glad you found it useful Maria!
loved it thanks for the help!
It’s a Sunday afternoon and it’s raining. I’m swatching watercolor pencils while I listened to the Broncos on the radio. Made the game loss more enjoyable. Thank you very much for your videos. ( The Broncos played at Wimbledon last year.)
Thanks for watching!
Thank you. Always great info in your videos.
That's kind of you :-)
Brilliantly concise tutorial. I always end up with ‘muddy colours’. Now I know why. Many thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great tutorial! Thank you.
You're very welcome!
Thank you Michele! Your videos are helpful and inspiring to me!
I'm so glad!
Thanks Michele 💜

Thank you! Very useful!
Thanks Michele, great video

Thank you so much. I learnt a lot from this video😂. I will save it to favourites to watch again. Water colours scare me but now I'm feeling more confident ❤

Wow 🤩 Loved this tutorial ❤️
Well articulated & cohesive 👌
Water color pencils does give a distinct look 👍 it’s interesting
Thanks for sharing 🙏
My pleasure 😊
Thx so much 4 your amazing vidros, also this brilliant one, i always learn so much from you. 👍
My pleasure!
Thank you Michelle, I just received my tin of Faber-Castell watercolor pencils today. Perfect timing!
Brilliant!
Great info! I love that flower painting, beautiful! I just joined your Patreon, yay! 🌸🎨
Thanks so much 😊 I really apprecaite that!
Perfect timing as I just bought good watercolor pencils Thankyou!
Exciting times!
Thank you for a very helpful tutorial, I learnt a lot about using the water colour pencils I have. It's spurred me on to try different things and use them more👍
Wonderful!
Very very helpful. I’m a newbie, and I’m learning a lot
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Michelle. I am going to have a go. 🌸
Please do!
Just bought a couple of boxes of these and decided to find a video on them to see what else I’ll need. Found you, and now got a list and will be headed to Hobby Lobby soon! Great video, thank you. 😃
No problem! Good luck with your paintings :-)
Thank ypu
You’re welcome 😊
I noticed they work better on smoother paper. Great video!
Yes! Thank you!
Very informativ and inspirering🥰
Thank you so much!
👌 south helpful for a starter in both watercolour & watercolour pencils thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I love watercolor pencils! I used them this week teaching some 8-11 year-old boys a class on drawing cars and perspective. Using watercolor pencils allowed them to add yet another skill for a brief class. p.s. I didn't use my Caran d'ache but the inexpensive ones worked great!☺
That is awesome!
Brilliant video. Firstly finding out that Intense are actually ink not watercolour. I didn’t realise. I think I only have the albrect durer watercolour pencils so maybe I need to invest in a set of aquarelles. The technique info was excellent. I had no idea how to use watercolour pencils but at least I now know where to start. Thank you very much ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Glad you enjoyed!
Hi I wondered can you use watercolour pencils on top of acrylic paints, thank you for the tutorial.
They don't work so well on top. For mixed media it's better to start with watercolour or watercolour pencils, and add acrylic on top.
Great
Thanks!
Hi Michele. New subscriber here. I just found your chanel, now I'm on a marathon of all your nice and very useful videos. Thank you so much for sharing your art knowledge with us. I love to draw, have my small collection of colored pencils but I would like to start painting one day, have a lot of theoretical knowledge from youtube tutorials and videos but don't have the courage to start (I know this is not a valid excuse! :) ). I find your videos very motivational and simple to follow so I hope that, with your help too, I will be able to start my painting journey soon . (...and I love that your videos are cat approved :) )
Oh, do start painting soon, just don't have any expectations at first, it takes time to progress :-) I have a complete beginners basic course for watercolours if you are interested, plus of course the free stuff on CZcams.
Excellent tutorial! I’m an extreme beginner, starting out in coloring books, but hope to progress from there at some point. This has been very helpful.
You can do it!
Karen, can I ask what coloring books you use....Im a beginner also :-)
@@debbieburtenshaw5788 I have several of Johanna Basford’s and her yearly planners. I have Rita Berman’s Meine Reise durch Europa. I also like abstract designs. Hope that helps. 😃
Do the color books have 110lb or heavier weight paper for wet media? I will check out the 2 you mentioned! ...
I've used watercolour pencils a few times before, but this was such a great refresher for basic watercolour techniques and such a great overview of how to use them to paint different subjects, both by themselves and with watercolour paints. Thank you so much for your informative and digestable videos.
My question would be what brands would you recommend as good quality? I know about Derwent and Faber-Castell, but are there any others?
Staedtler are highly reviewed although I haven't tried them. I definitely think that Caran d'Ache are better than the standard Derwent (non Inktense)
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thank you. I appreciate it.
Caran d’Ache Museum Aquarelle are the Rolls Royce of watercolour pencils. Expensive, but you don’t need to buy a set. Unfortunately UK art shops don’t seem to have loose stock….but Jackson’s and Ken Bromley do sell them individually. So much pigment, you only need a few basic colours as you can blend them.
@@annepercival7814 Thanks. I'll probably stick to the Faber-Castel when I save enough to get a set. Caran d'Ache is out of my price range.
@@SmillyDonut Koh-I-Noor are also a good ones imo. if you manage to find a small set I suggest to try them. And they are not so expensive :)
I am 60 years old and truly a beginner. I think this video will help get me started. I love painting and drawing but I'm my own worse critic. I get discouraged if my painting isn't just right. That takes the fun out of it.
You can do it!
This is so inspiring! Although I'm sure a lot of practice is needed to get such good effects, watercolour pencils look fun. I'm becoming quite a fan of Michele's courses - currently working through the drawing modules. I purchased the watercolour course and plan to do that next. Or is it better to start with watercolour pencils?? Thanks again for your excellent videos,
The watercolour course is a great one to do next as it's an overall basic course. The watercolour pencils is more about flowers :-)
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thanks! Good to have that insight as I dream about moving from pencil to colour😇 Every drawing in a huge learning experience!

If super small details are needed, put them in with a sharp pencil, the use some steam to set it. Detail will not spread.
Mam,
In future, please make a video on the tips and tricks to compose illustrative drawings 🤷♂️
I like to write Love poems and motivational quotes.
I want to merge it with illustrative drawings.
I am checking out some resources on the same however I’d love to get your insights on the same in future.
Thank you so much 👍
Great suggestion!
Can you do something for flesh tones???
I do have a skin tone video for watercolor and it's pretty much the same mixes for any medium. Pop it in the search bar and it should come up.
I was given a set of watercolor pencils by a friend these are great tips. I found it odd there is a white color pencil in the set. I guess it would work on color paper but I prefer using white paper.
Glad it was helpful!
Love inktense. I also bought Derwent watercolour professional quality, which weren't any better than a cheap set 'Gallery' from Tesco years ago.
I like Prismacolor.
Surprising, sometimes you get lucky with cheap supermarket sets and they're made by a good brand. Derwent aren't that exceptional (apart from the Inktense)
I also like Derwent Inktense pencils and am just beginning to use them after so many years. I need to learn more about layering and blending shades in Inktense pencils. I also have a 60 set of Albrecht Durer (Faber Castell) watercolor pencils that I need to learn the same things about. How to make highlights and using various shades together without loosing one or more colors. Etc.
Try the Museum Aquarelles!
Could you tell me what sharpener you use for your pencils? I have Faber Castell Abrect Durer WC pencils. Still looking for "the one." And-great video-thank you!
I use a helix barrel sharpener
im a senior and so much enjoy😅
What gsm or lb should the paper be? I have a variety of different ones that I've purchased several packs of paper in preparation from 160gsm/98lb, 290gsm/136lb to 300gsm/140lb. I just knew I needed thick paper to learn this and acrylic painting...LOL 🤷♀️
I use 140 lb for Watercolour and stretch it but you could go lighter if you don't use a lot of water.
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thank you! I got really confused and excited with all the weights and gsm's and media's I wanted to try! LOL
can mixed media work for watercolor/watercolor pencils cause i just recently last year got a mixed media sketch book from bee but also got a watercolor sketch book from the same company the year before that year
It can, it may be more textured and less absorbent, they are all different so just see what works :-)
Thank you but what colour pencils do you prescribe. I recently purchased Faber Castel pencils but are quite hard
I like Caran d'Ache Museum quality.
Is it really possible for someone who has never use water colour pencils learn this skill. I want to develop this skill for the New Year. Already purchased my supplies. Just need to find a face-to-face tutor. Online doesn't work for me.
Yes I am sure you can find a tutor ☺️
I'm new to watercolor pencils and am in a large class, so it's hard to get individual questions answered. Thanks or this.
You are so welcome!
Why wouldn't you dip colored pencils in water? Is it because they don't dry well or they get so soft they dissolve?
Because it can degrade the lead and the wood apparently. But it's hardly going to ruin a whole pencil :-)
If you use watercolor pencils with watercolor paint is it considered mixed media?
I would say not Kathy, although if entering an exhibition or society it all depends on their rules. Really it's still watercolour pigment though.
Also, can I use an electric pencil sharpener? Or would it be better if I purchase a hand operated sharpener?
Either works, I like the turn handle type.
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thank you and I appreciate your detailed and informative videos. I already know that I will be upgrading my watercolor pencils! You definitely get what you pay for here!
I invite that guy to come over to my place and say something to my face about dipping my pencils in water 🤣
Lol
Abuse of pencils ... that's hilarious!😂
easy tips🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣get it? its a TIP of a ✏ ✏
I see what you did there!
