Fans in Qatar accuse Germany of HYPOCRISY during Spain game after they covered their mouths in anti-discrimination protest, by holding up pictures of Mesut Ozil - who hit out at racism in German FA when he retired from international duty in 2018
A group of fans held up pictures of Mesut Ozil during Germany's crucial World Cup clash against Spain on Sunday, in a bid to highlight perceived hypocrisy after the team's anti-discrimination protest versus Japan.
Ahead of their historic 2-1 defeat by Japan on Wednesday, Hansi Flick's side covered their mouths in protest of FIFA's decision to ban the inclusivity-promoting OneLove captain's armband.
World football's governing body threatened to issue captains with sanctions if they sported the garment, which was designed in part to act as a symbol against anti-LGBTQ laws in Qatar.
Germany decided against performing a similar gesture ahead of Sunday's clash with Spain.
During the match, fans in the stadium were seen holding up pictures of former Germany midfielder Ozil, who sensationally retired from international football in 2018 after hitting out against racism within the German FA.
Claiming he was used as a scapegoat during the aftermath of Germany's group stage elimination at the Russia World Cup, Ozil insisted he had become an 'unwanted' part of the national team, holding a 'feeling of racism and disrespect'.
In a statement posted to Twitter, he accused German officials of 'disrespecting' his Turkish roots and 'selfishly turning him into political propaganda' when the country lost matches.
Ozil closed his statement by stating that 'racism should never, ever be accepted'.
Clearly alluding to the saga of Ozil's retirement, supporters were keen to highlight the hypocrisy of Germany's anti-discrimination gesture on Wednesday, with a player having quit the nation team as a result of racism just four years ago. - Zábava

Germany won a world cup because of this guy and yet they hate him.
The reason was because they felt he betrayed them. President Erdogan of Turkey insulted Germany and Germans many times. He also arrested a German reporter, violated human rights in Turkey. Mesut Ozil took pictures with President Erdogan, so Germans saw it as a cultural betrayal of the country that took his family in. Personally, though I'm not German, I can understand that. Ozil was a great player, and he was loved by Germany before that unfortunate photo. And had Turkey and Germany not had such bad relations, it wouldn't have ended up that way. Also keep in mind, some ethnic Turks in Germany don't like President Erdogan and think Ozil's picture was wrong considering what Erdogan has done inside Turkey and how he has insulted Germany and Germans. Is it normal to not be upset when some leader keeps insulting your people and one of your members is smiling with him?

President Erdogan insulted Germans, called them Nazis and said Turks shouldn't integrate in society. Why would Germans like such a photo op? Things went downhill for Ozil after that photo. There are many Turkish Germans who don't like Ozil either and consider his photo with Erdogan a betrayal of German values, so it's also ethnic Turks who think that way, too. He clashed with his team Arsenal over not supporting him over the Uighurs. He never clashed with Germany over that. You're confusing different years.
You are mixing up two issues here. Özil was fired from the German national team because he fanboyed for Erdogan (who by the way loves China and rejects the Uyghur genocide). Him calling out Uyghurs was not the reason, it wasn't even the same year. Özil was fired from the NT in 2018, but he only ever talked about Uygurs in 2019.
