- Unicomp have been doing some retooling and released a "new" Model M. Here I compare it to their previous version of the UltraClassic and an actual classic Model M.

It's nice that they reintroduced the curve into the case again. It's kind of iconic.
The more I use it the more I like the shape over the UltraClassic. But I just like the late-90s early-2000s swoopy curved design for some reason.
ergo too :]
To be fair, you could always order a curved case from the Classic line of Unicomp keyboards. Last year, I ordered a brand new Unicomp Classic White 103 Keyboard, and it has the same "curve" that the original IBM keyboards had.

Typing this from my New Model M i just ordered; they updated it again. This time, the annoying blue LED was replaced with a nice green one. No gripes from me! It feels absolutely amazing to type on!
Glad to hear! Maybe I'll make the 2020 model my work keyboard since we're back in the office and get the green LED version for home. I might have a problem.
I was looking for a video review of the ‘new’ model M from Unicomp, and your video checked all the boxes. Great job.
Glad it was helpful!
Great review! Thanks for taking the time to really try it out and especially for stacking the New Model M up against the other two. Super informative and really helpful as I look for a buckling spring keyboard.
I don't think you can go wrong either way! The New M really makes me want that SSK I pre-ordered! For some reason I'm just partial to the green LEDs and overall shape of the UltraClassic but there's no denying the New M is way better put together. Glad Unicomp is upping their game and either board is a good value these days IMO.
Thanks for all your work to share this with us! I enjoyed it. I've been a Model M keyboard enthusiast since it came out (in about 1984 I believe). Model Ms are remarkable!
Thank you sir! This video is phenomenal. Not only do you do a competent review of this keyboard, you compare it to a ton of older models and give a concise list of pros/cons and trade-offs between each of them. I've been eyeing a new model M for a very long time and NONE of the reviews I've seen mentioned the blue lights, but that would've been huge for me! I'll definitely be looking into modding that at a later date if I do pick one of these up.
may I ask though, what type of mouse is that? Some sort of ergonomic trackball?
Yes I have a couple different track balls. A Logitech MX Ergo and an MX 570.
Really appreciate the thoughtful and direct review of Uniciomp’s New Model M!
Here's the main point - they are so precise and clear in tactile feedback that they reduce typos. Imagine never having to look to see if you missed a keystroke. If that's important to you, if you write software, legal documents, serious literature, scientific research papers (where spellcheck is clueless), or do data entry, the current obvious choice is the New Model M. Searching for something else is wasting your time.
I do like buckle springs, it's a keyboard sound of my childhood... But for this price with this build quality? Nope... 50$ - I'd buy it, but in 100$ range, I'd go (or rather did) for the modern hot swappable mechanical keyboard. For 100$ you can buy a really decent one - and you have possibility to change switches according to your taste.
Thank you for the informative video. I have a 2017 Ultra Classic and was curious about the differences between it and the New Model M; you did a great job of demonstrating them.
Thanks for sharing this, I have three different Unicomp Model M and really looking forward for the new one.
I just got one, fantastic keyboard. A real model m, as good as I remember back in the early 90s. First impression, I tought the keys was heavier than my filco majestouch II (cherry mx blue switches) but I am used now and feels more and more pleasant each day I use it.
Otherwise, he new size is spot on and looks perfect. Unicomp can be proud of themself with this new keyboard.
I have these keycaps on my OG Model M, and am typing on them right now. Thank you for that info! I had no idea what they were for or from.
Yeah the white/gray color combo is nice. I still like the OG color pattern on the Ms though.
Thank you! Exactly the kind of review I was looking for.
thanks for stopping by and watching!
So, there's an option for a large space bar/103 model in the drop down menu.
$3 more...
compare that to the +$10 of a 103 key classic
A big thumbs up for covering the Windows key with Tux!! 🐧
Didn't cover it! Unicomp sells tux keycaps for the meta keys. They look pretty good.
Cool Tux keycap instead of the Windows keycap!
Thanks, Unicomp prints all kind of custom keycaps for these things. Work on classic M's too: www.pckeyboard.com/page/category/Buttons
They're very durable and made in Kentucky as well. It's kind of cool that in 2020 there's are still top notch keyboards being made right around the corner from us.
I used to use and repair IBM keyboards back in the late 80s and we never ever referred to them as model F or model M, to us they were just XT and AT keyboards.
The only fixes we ever really needed to do was clean them. We'd take all the keycaps off, give the keyboard mechanism a damn good spray with compressed air and then clean each individual keycap by hand as we put them back on.
I've just ordered one of these 'new' Model M keyboards and it'll be here tomorrow. It'll be the first proper, nice, noisy keyboard I've had for years. I'm quite looking forward to it.
There was a briefly produced Model F AT (I have one) as well which kind of blurs the line between the XT and AT distinction of F and M.
There's been many a debate in the community as to where the F and M moniker came from, the distinction in their mechanism (capacitive vs membrane) was thought to be in for a while. F would be "Farad" the unit of capacitance and M would be "membrane" but I think that's been thoroughly debunked. It's likely just the usual IBM semi-random corporate naming scheme.
@@EJ22bakadesu Oh yes, I vaguely remember that - Wasn't that the one which had the separate LEDs on the shelf above the keypad before they went to the larger AT style?
This is like a history lesson!
@@Feakre Yes, I have a short video on it here: czcams.com/video/t69VUcaHqEo/video.html
Cool video! Just what I was hoping to find.
Amazing how they made their keyboard in America yet it's cost $109! many more expensive keyboard aren't even this good.I'm using a 92 Model M now but I'll eventually have to buy a New Unicomp Model M so I can keep my original model M in great condition because now the Keycap are start to shine and it's not gonna look good and I don't know if the original IBM replacement keycap will be sacred.
I received mine a couple hours ago. It'd been years since I had my original M, and an old unicomp. Feels weird using buckling springs again, but it's like getting to know an old friend after many years.
Here's to hoping their new space saver comes back in stock soon :)
I love my Mini M. Glad I got it early! I'm ride or die on bucking springs usually, sometimes I use an Alps board or two though.
@@EJ22bakadesu if not unicomp.. Matias please :)
Hello from Ukraine, thanks for the review.
p.s. you have a very nice charismatic voice.
10 days ago I've also ordered my new model M and I absolutely love it! 😊 I actually ordered it with the Ultra Classic chassis and Windows 95 keys (they look so much better in my opinion). It also sounds slightly different than the Ultra Classic in your video. In the end it's an absolutely beautiful keyboard and the typing feel is just amazing. It's also great to support a small business that still makes their products in the USA :)
Hi, if you ordered with the Ultra Classic chassis, what was "New Model M" in the keyboard that you ordered? I'm a little confused, thanks!
Good purchase I think! I still like mine!
The New M is a completely different board from the UltraClassic. The UltraClassic is their old board.
@@45calibermedic The Ultra Classic chassis can be seen in the image here: www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/KBDCFG
This is their new model M: www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/NEW_M
If you skip to 4:00 In the video you can see that the upper one has the Ultra Classic chassis and the lower one is the new Model M :)
@@EJ22bakadesu Could you elaborate on what has changed, besides the chassis? :-)
I love Model M and modern Unicomp keyboards. I have several (I have a Lexmark Model M). I find it curious that you think the blue is more intrusive than the green LEDs... but hey, thanks for the video.
I now own 2 custom built new model m keyboards straight from unicomp thanks to this video when I first watched it last year. I adore this keyboard for it's slight faults. I first ordered one with the mac firmware and layout and it was so good that I wanted to get one for my workplace so I can use it there in place for a chicklet mac keyboard. Best keyboard I have owned and I don't regret spending 140 including taxes, shipping, and the 2 10 dollar customization fees they charge for my custom keyboard. I did it twice after all now.
Does this make me an influencer?
I am super stoked for the tenkeyless one.
Love the feel look and sound of these. I just think I would be hated for the loud keys even among my office full of other mechanical keyboard users
Nice review and comparison!
Thanks!
Your personality is perfect for this stuff man 👍
Haha thanks! I think ...
@@EJ22bakadesu Always!
What about the finishing of the keycaps? I had an earlier model (2015-ish), and was quite dissapointed with the finishing (accuracy) of the keycaps, specially the space bar which was almost warped.
They're about as good as Unicomp's usually are, nothing is terribly out of alignment and the printing is about as as sharp as my 2018 UltraClassic but I think my UltraClassic is a pretty good example. I've also got a '94 M with a full set of replacement Unicomp caps. I've had pretty good luck with my Unicomp cap printings though I will admit.
I randomly found Unicomp keyboards. Thinking about buying one, just wanted to see how it is.
You can get the longer space bar as an option on the new model M now (103 vs 104 keys), and hopefully they will offer that on the new Mini model M as well.
Two piece key caps are a bit easier to clean, otherwise the one piece might work better.
They are a bit easier to clean but I always have a hard time just getting the top keycap off without pulling the whole thing. My answer so far has been to just wash my hands before using the computer and use a dust cover. Keeps the boards pretty clean.
I like the sound of the ibm model ms but the ones that I can still find are really expensive :(
Eh oh well I dont think my parents would let me buy a keyboard older than me.
How does the 2KRO work though? Is it 2 keys + any combination of modifier keys?
I hope they will produce a model with media keys, which are now necessary with the increase of smartworking.
The Ultraclassic’s mold is from the Enduropro form. That blank space below the space bar is where a couple mouse buttons could be. Then, they have a mouse stick in the middle of the home row. Mouse and keyboard in one.
I’m considering getting the new M in a 103 layout. Does anyone really need two windows keys?
I also have the Ultraclassic now. Need one for the office and one for home, right? 👍
Nice vid! Have you considered procuring a Unicomp/Lexmark/IBM rubber dome keyboard? I got one for fifteen dollars off Craigslist a little while ago. It's the best rubber dome I have ever used, but BTC dome with slider is supposed to be nice as well.
Thanks! I have not really paid much attention to their rubber dome boards TBH. I've got a few NMB made kock-off Model M dome and slider keyboards (CompuAdd branded) and they aren't bad IMO. I also have two or three BTC dome and sliders in my collection. Honestly I think I prefer the NMB dome and slider to the BTC but that's down to preference. My favorite dome and slider is an old school Compaq banded NMB 101 I found in recycling bin. Really types nicely and I really dig the old late-80s/early-90s Compaq logo. Maybe I can do a video on it.
@@EJ22bakadesu awesome! Subscribed.
I bought the Unicomp Classic 101 March 2021 and now September 2023. Used a few times and was put into storage. Recently rediscovered and noticed "P" key was acting erratic requiring two or three taps to make contact. Contacted Unicomp and was given RMA but would cost $48.00 plus $16 shipping. After doing my own disassembly I found all but 6 plastic rivet heads were broken off. Unicomp claims this issue was resolved before I purchased in 2021. I would not advise purchasing from Unicomp based on my experience.
The notch must’ve been for the IBM Model M13 keyboards. (M13’s are the Trackpoint Model M’s)
The New Model M comes into black only, and the customer service said they had no plan to make beige(white) in the near future... that is a pity.
they've cited a surprisingly low demand for the beige color as the reason why they don't make them for the New Model M.
@@osiel5568 That is really a surprise to me... I think the classic color scheme is so much more beautiful.
I've seen a lot of other revies, noticeably older reviews, saying that the build quality is a bit lacking. The biggest complaints were off-centered text, cheap plastic, bad font, even having the case be chipped or broken upon arrival. However, I have noticed newer reviews saying that the build quality has been just fine. Would you agree with some of these newer reviews, or do you think the build quality is still subpar? Great review, I appreciate people reviewing these things!
I think the build quality is fine as a Unicomp goes. I've never seen 100% perfect dye sub caps from any OEM as it's hard to do but the text on mine is sharp and placed well. I have had a few fuzzy printing from Unicomp on custom made replacement caps for some M122s in the past but overall the new boards (same for my ~2018 UltraClassic) seem OK. It's not as heavy or as rigid as a classic M but it's not floppy either. For a daily driver I prefer either Unicomp board to a classic M for the layout.
It's still a Unicomp so it's still plastic and may not be what you're looking for if you're used to a higher end modern board with aluminum bezels, high quality painted finishes, etc and such. I'd put it above a lot of consumer aimed mechs (Razor's mid to lower range offerings for example) these days for sure.
I'm definitely not one for the modern looking keyboards in general though. Not a fan of RGB, sci-fi fonts, etc. So some of this may be down to taste.
The bad reviews are from the old tooling Model Ms. The "New Model M" uses a new tooling and overall seems improved in all ways, so that's why you are seeing the newer reviews being positive.
@@mosk11tto The moulds they were using were the original moulds from the 1980's and were starting to wear out. They finally replaced the moulds which is why the quality has improved and also why they went to single piece keys. Moulds that size (of the case) cost six figures *per mould* so it must have cost them a huge amount of money.
How would you rate the overall build quality say compared to more known brands such as Razor/Corsair mechanical boards if you have experience with them? Unfortunately, my previous mechanical boards from those companies have failed within a year and right now I'm looking for a stable robust board that I don't need to replace for four years. Unicomp seems that it fits the bill of a robust board. And good review.
I have rather limited experience with modern boards. I have seen a couple of Razor boards in person and I'd but it above those. I generally dislike Razor's reliance on software and look/feel though. Does Razor still use Cherry? I feel like there are better Cherry MX options out there and way better switches than Cherry MX these days.
@@EJ22bakadesu The current board I have is a razor but started having key failures a year in even after cleanings.(Press A 10 times, get 8 A prints)
And the only other mechanical keyboard I've had has had similar issues a year in, both using cherry mx switches. Quite annoying to say the least and funnily enough, my membrane keyboard has lasted and still works 9 years later. I only swapped out for mechanical so I can enjoy the better typing feel feedback on the board. I'll give the buckling spring design a checkout and these seem like the best option for that.
I have the “new model m” it’s a tank, the buckling spring architecture is extremely robust. They were built back in the day to be workhorse typing machines. Those little cherry switches and thin aluminum cases can’t match the steel plate in these.
ty so much for these, I dont mind the blue so I am in
Does the unicomp versions has nkey rollover already?
I have a "BTC" keyboard "FCC ID: E5XKBM111" which isn't an "IBM" model (or clone) by any means, it just have similarly "darker white"(?) and gray keys, also didn't have "Windows" and "context menu" keys. It's a "rubber dome & membrane" keyboard, but the feeling is nice for that type, also its connector is "DIN", but works fine with a PS/2 plug-adaptor. 😊 I using it with my retro Win98 computer.
Thats a lexycorp gen 4 model
How has the New Model M held up over time?
LGR had a Classic Unicomp Model M and he mentioned it fell to bits after a few months in his New Model F review.
It's still great! This, the Mini M and the UltraClassic all use different mold parts than the Classic he had.
@@EJ22bakadesu Thanks for the info mate, may have to order one then.
Hello sir, I am considering a Unicomp and really want a white one. Do you think that the Ultra Classic is still a good one to get, or should I just go with the black New Model M? The main bug-bears for me would be accurate dimensions for the body and keys and properly printed legends. Swirls or whatnot in the molding that do not detract from the feel would be fine with me. Also, do you have any advice on getting Windows 95, 98, or some sort of "classic" start key buttons for Unicomp keyboards? Thank you for the video and the sound tests!
Somewhere else in the comments someone said they had a more recently UltraClassic that was less flexible than mine so it seems Unicomp might have stepped up the built a bit. Either are fine but from my experience the New M is more robust. The UltraClassic is not a bad board at all but the New M definitely benefits from more recent tooling and R&D. I wouldn't hesitate to but the UltraClassic though!
hi! i'm looking for my first "mechanical" keyboard (I love type with my old Olivetti underwood 319 and I'd like to have the same "clicky" sound also when i use my pc) and I just find this Unicomp.. but now I'm in doubt: buy a modern mechanical keyboard (with clicky cherry mx blue) or the Unicomp model M? For years i used a Logitech K520 and it was fantastic, but i want to make an "upgrade". What do you think is the best for long witing session?
So, I don't hate Cherry MX like a lot of people in the keyboard community. But I think even a Unicomp M, nevermind a Classic M, is in a completely different ballpark. This new M is far more tactical than any Cherry board I own. Cherry blues are definitely a lighter switch that the Model M and certainly lighter than any typewriter. I also own some IBM typewriters (see the other video on my channel about that) and Cherry isn't close to that level of tactility. If you want something akin to your Olivetti the buckling spring Model M is probably the closest of what you named there.
I’ve owned both. I like cherry mx blue but I find model m far more satisfying to type on. Of course you could get a cheap mx clone keyboard for a whole lot less than a model m
I've wanted to buy one for a couple years, but I love media keys. That said I just bought an overpriced split Cherry MX red silent keyboard for ergonomics, and just ordered a separate volume control + media key device, so maybe I'll pick one of these up now. Glad to hear they redid the tooling to solve the complaints about loose keys, it was another point I had against them, so now more incentive to grab one.
EDIT: I also like that utility knife, where did you get it?
I run an external DAC/Amp with its own volume controls and such and use vim keybindings for my music player so I don't really miss media keys.
That is an Olfa 25mm utility knife. Made in the land of the rising sun and can be found from the usual scumbags over on Amazon. I"d pick up a box of spare blades too while you're at it.
@@EJ22bakadesu I also run an external DAC/amp, though the knob isn't as convenient as being mounted horizontally next to my keyboard. The potentiometer has gotten a bit scratchy though on the FiiO. And if I ever pipe it to a TV and bypass the amp, then having a centralized control on the computer is nice.
@@EJ22bakadesu you got a link to your vim config?
About time they updated the tooling. Build quality still has room for improvement.
Where is the build quality lacking?
No drainage holes?
did they send you any more info about the TKL version? It was supposed to be out in march, and the last update I saw was from august that they were still working on it..
No problem, no I don't have any inside information. I just bought it off their site like anyone else would. I buy parts to repair old Model Ms from Unicomp fairly regularly and just decided to chuck one of these on an order so shipping was more worth it.

Probably just worn out tooling
@@jdod64 I guess he was referring that did you unicomp really ever have high standards?
But yeah at least the real buckling spring keyfeel has always had high standards for them which is the most important part imo.
Any Unicomp with Fn shortcuts (e.g. volume) ?
I think the Mac OS version (SpaceSaver M) of the UltraClassic does but none of the PC layouts do.
@@EJ22bakadesu deal breaker :(
So only this unicomp and tenkeyless(if they release it) have new tooling? ultra classic and other model m with white chassis are old tooling ? Shame they don't sell it in beige/white.
Btw - the usb version is not nkey rollover right ?
Yes, only this and the tenkeyless will have the new moulds and stuff. No N-key rollover on any of these as AFAIK, 2 key minimum but it's usually higher due to how the membrane is laid out. I've never had any problems out of them.
Where did you get those neat Linux key caps, and are there any one piece one's that vendor sells that you would recommend?
What he said, they sell thees right on their site. Just be warned they don't fit the Mini M.

If you can't even update the website in half a year yet alone ship to the people that have entrusted you with their preoder money, you are not a trustworthy supplier.
@@apb. Greetings, Kwinz. . .
I will copy our latest Facebook update here:
Here’s the December, 2020 Unicomp business and Mini M status update.
The bad news…. struggles to overcome the direct and indirect impact of COVID-19 continue. Sales orders continue to be good, but it has been very difficult to put together an assembly team on a consistent basis. And we are not the only people with workforce issues. Many of our suppliers have been slowed by COVID-19 as well. Of course, there are multiple reasons for this, but the net effect is deliveries have been a challenge to get out the door. This is the first fourth quarter in my memory where we did not offer any type of promotion. It just made no sense to offer incentives to customers to drive demand knowing the assembly team is struggling to meet the status quo. Hopefully, these struggles dissolve with the exit of 2020.
The good news…. Over the last couple of weekends, the development team has made significant progress on resolving some firmware issues. The code has really stabilized even though it is not quite full function yet. And we still have more system level testing complete. But the keyboard in good enough shape for me to type this note using a Mini M. Any mistakes you see in this note are my mistakes, not those of the keyboard. Two weeks ago, I could not have been so confident to make such a statement. I hope to have more definitive positive news about the Mini M availability before the end of the month.
We are looking forward to the New Year!
Regards,
Jeanne

Cool video. Want a new model M but shipping to Australia costs more than the keyboard!!
How much does it cost you? I've paid $65 for shipping to Germany.
@@Rummeltobi the keyboard was $104, and shipping was an extra $115 USD.
@@Rummeltobi Did you have to pay import fees on top of that or were those already included?
@@mixxamm They're not included as far as I know, unless it's in the $65 Fedex bill. I live in Germany and so far I did not have to pay import fees. In theory customs would intercept the parcel and require me to pick it up and pay import fees but that didn't happen. There may be a customs letter on the way with which they will require me to pay fees and taxes. I could also be lucky, who knows..
@TV Sounds like you purchased a Unicomp? 😊 But $219 is quite an impressive number for a keyboard. I shouldn't complain about the $185 that I paid lol. On the other hand I love the keyboard :) Ordered a custom Model M with the Ultra Classic Chassis and Windows 95 keys. :)
I wonder how much it'll cost shipping to Canada
i got 2 unicomp ultra classic. they have one piece keycaps. and they don't flex at all. don't know if it's because they are made for Germany :_:
Do the same keycaps work on the "new model m" and the classic ones?
Yes, key stem is unchanged. They're just single piece across the board now.
How would one compare this to the switches in Matias keyboards? Clicky Alps switches, as far as I know. And is there any reason to go with their bulky Classic instead of the New Model M? The delivery to Scandinavia is prohibitively expensive. It's $144 to ship four, $88 to ship one. Plus VAT and duties.
They are completely different from Matias switches. For one buckling springs are far far more reliable. ;) They're a bit heavier and deeper sounding and IMO don't really feel much alike.
I'd avoid the Unicomp bulky Classic. That one seems to have the most complaints as far as build and feel go. I'd go with a new 2002 M or maybe an UltraClassic. The UltraClassic is smidge smaller but the 2020 M is way better built due to the new tooling. I'd also avoid the Mini M right now as they're having endless firmware and controller problems. Mine's gone back a second time. But the 2020 M and UltraClassic are solid products.
Do you know if these keyboards support 4-8 key rollover?
Technically it's 2-key rollover but it depends on which two keys you hit on the matrix. They space out the lines on the membrane in such a way that it's usually not a problem and it will register 4-ish keypresses at once unless you have three hands and manage to find the two keys on the same line. I've never had any problems with it missing keystrokes using typical game controls (WASD, E/I, Control, Space) being hit at once. In buckling springs only the Model F has NKRO but those are basically collectors items now and their layouts aren't that great for modern use IMO.
OOOhhh I want it
what's the verdict after 3 weeks ?
It's a winner, if you want a USB Model M it's the one to get it.
Is it possible to start the computer with it? I notice there's no power button on it.

(I don’t have a unicomp model m, so idk how it works/how to say it)
@@aarizx6395 yes they are fully swappible. My 2018 UltraClassic came with classic Windows keys that I swapped for tux. You may have to request a custom board to do it as their default is the new Windows key.
I wish they had black keys with the black keyboard
I just got my new UltraClassic last week. The sticker says it is made on 11/09/2020, but because it from the US I suspect the mean 09/11/2020 so it is very 'fresh'. It is single cap. Has blue status lights. And the keys are all in one colour, grey. But a different grey then yours. Very light grey. (picture drive.google.com/file/d/1enKFwWLMtU3oEsuFabm6keC7KyXpd0Cz/view?usp=sharing ) - Flex is nearly absent. But when I press on the left and right lower corner it gives a bit. - I smiled when I noticed your TUX super keys. I paid also extra for those. Strangely the send me when I asked to just replace the windows keys with TUX keys two bags of extra keys. Monochrome TUX and colour TUX set with a lot extra unnecessary keys. And no tool to remove the keys. - I am very happy with my keyboard but it is sad the are difficult and expensive to get in Europe. My UltraClassic was very nearly double the price the go for in the US and special order for my layout. I have a Belgian Azerty. - That strange thing on the keyboard, on the front, is for the left and right mouse key that exist on the EnduraPro model, with a mouse pointer built in.
I've heard from others that they are using the blue LEDs across all their lines now. My UltraClassic is almost 3 years old now and it does flex a bit. Yes, US date codes are always month/day/year so that was Nov 09, 2020. Unicomp has been going full tilt this year I hear and selling a large number of boards. I guess for people setting up home offices. The Tux keycaps set comes with some keys for the 103 and 104 version I think? It's been a while but I had some extra keys from mine too. I need to pick up a set for my New M at one point.
Why did you go UltraClassic over the New M? Just curious! The New M's shape has really grown on me but the UltraClassic does look good. I think I prefer the two-tone grey and white keys myself!
@@EJ22bakadesu Well, I started with the idea;
I want the Classic in beige without super keys. But the then ... I like the beige but all other of my computers stuff is black. And the Classic has a larger footprint for no objective reason. So I ended up convincing myself beige was not a good idea, getting a large one without an objective reason. And the last one was super keys. I did not use those keys so I was thinking to leave those out. But the price is same or more expensive to get less keys (103-key layout). And maybe I could start using them.
So I landed on to get a black one, non-classic with super keys. I knew about the new M. I knew the tooling was new for that so it would probably look more nice and has a greater positional to fit better together . But as a keyboard itself the difference was minor/no difference. You review actually confirms that. I did liked the two tone keyboard colour more of the New M.
I asked Unicomp what my options where to get a Belgain Azerty Classic, Ultra Classic or New M and some other questions. The answered with a template to use the 'Keyboard Configuration Tool' on their website. That tool does not give an option for the 'New M'.
If I ordered it directly from Unicomp I maybe would have asked it again. But I did not. I was afraid of the shipping cost and especially the extra taxes. The only real seller besides from Unicomp directly so far I know is keyboardco.com in the UK. The where willing to include in there next regular order of new stock form there shop from Unicomp a special order for me.This way I would know in advance the total cost and it would be send as part of a larger businesses order. - I placed that order in early September. I was and am grateful the where willing to do that and without any markup I must say for my special order. - I asked them. The ask Unicomp. - I could not add complexity by asking something I as not sure the could make and asked what the configuration tool says the could.
In any case I am happy with what I got.
I have only one negative point about the keyboard. The placement of the 2th super key is weird. I use the right Alt-key, that for me is 'Alt. Gr', a lot and that key belongs more to the left. It is easy to get used to. But for a company that made its name with 'tradition' it a is strange thing to do.
@@WalterVermeir Just in case anybody else is wondering, I can explain both things that have confused you here: the extra keys in the Tux pack and the weird placement of Alt Gr. They're both inherited from the Sun OS (Sun Microsystems Unix-based server OS) layout. On that layout, the right superkey is to the right of space bar, then the Alt is to the right of that; it also swaps the backspace key to the UK position (immediately above enter/return rather than a row further up as in US ANSI), switches Esc into the number row, and swaps caps lock with control so that the control key is on the "home" row. I take it this is a result of them being able to configure the tooling to Sun layout or some variation thereof and blending it into the non-Sun boards. Here's their Sun version of the Ultra Classic so you can see what I mean: www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/40PSA
Does the new Unicomp Model M have cosmetic imperfections like the other models or is Unicomp using an entirely new mold for it?
New molds for the New M and the tenkeyless that are coming out. The UltraClassic, EnduraPro and the 122/trackball models using old molds still.
Thank you for the info.
I really like the look of the new Unicomp Model M. I wouldn't mind buying one and I am also trying to track down a fully functional vintage IBM Model M.
@@EJ22bakadesu wish they had new molds for endurapro, really want to try out the ponting stick and the buckling springs, but a creaky piece of plastic is a no go for me.
Case still has imperfections. Look at when he turns out over. Look at the spacebar.
The price of shipping anywhere outside of the US is really a dealbreaker. Over 100e for europe, too bad.

@@EJ22bakadesu Thanks for the video!
Sabre keyboard for silver badge XD i got a pile of model ms refurbished and screw modded already
Looks good quality. Dislike the Windows keys, at least with having two of them it seems too much. Media keys might be nice (volume/mute). They could be built in secondary keys by holding down CTRL or ALT.
This would be all awesome if they didn't try to "innovate" and put the RWin and RAlt keys in different order than all other keyboards.
The advantage of Windows keyboards (apart from Unicomp it seems) is that the right Alt (aka the AltGr) key is placed in a more convenient position to use while typing in a language that uses AltGr as a modifier to get accented characters.
So it sounds "different" and you don't like the color of the LED. That's about the same as the other Unicomp reviews I've read recently.
At least you gave it a thumbs up. :)
That's about the gist of it. I still think it's a good buy. The mylar backing is responsible for 90% of the sound change over a classic M.
The blue LEDs are annoying IMO But what I mostly knocked them for was shining through the case plastic, it's just hard to see on video. If they wanted to move away from the old-school green LED I think a warm white LED would look better, be less garrish and probably not shine through the case. I may mod mine and replace the LEDs to see how it looks.
5:49 LOL. I find it a funny contrast that you glazed over the keyboard feet when LGR spent two whole minutes raving about how the feet on the New Model M were substantially better than the feet on the Classic Model M.
I don't have the Unicomp classic style M to compare it to, just actual IBM M's, Mini , an UltraClassic and the 2020 Unicomp M. The feet on those are all fine IMO so it's not something I really look at. I don't use the feet anyway.
But I think the classic styled Unicomp Ms are the ones with the fit and fitment problems on the case IMO.
I have discovered a far worse problem with the Mini M that I'm in contact with Unicomp about. That's delaying the full review a bit. But, I'd say in 2021 if you want a Unicomp board get the 2020 M but I'm still partial to my UltraClassic for weird reasons. Thanks for stopping by.
@@EJ22bakadesu Yeah, It's actually kinda sad. The tooling and equipment that Unicomp is using to make the Classic Unicomp Ms is on its last legs (it's over 30 years old!). That's why the classic keyboards have the issues that they have.
So they're basically betting the farm with these "New Model Ms" because they bought all new tooling to make them, and if they don't sell well, Unicomp as we know it will cease to exist, which would be heartbreaking to me.
@@SergeantExtreme I have to say it's a good bet. This and the Mini M are solidly built keyboard. Especially considering the price IBM classic Ms are fetching now it's almost a no brainer to by a Unicomp New M for a daily driver. As great as the old ones are they're getting really old now and basically any one you get for a similar price to a new Unicomp is going to have problems and need repair. I'm pretty skilled at repairing Ms at this point but I think most people who just want to take it out of the box and use it are better served by a 2020 Unicomp New M. Plus helping a small business stay afloat is a nice bonus IMO.
The firmware issues on the Mini are bad though. :/ I'd hold off on ordering one of those for now.
@@EJ22bakadesu [Phew]. It's just firmware issues. When you stated that the mini had a "far worse" issue that you're in contact with Unicomp about, I thought there was some massive underlying issue with the construction made with their new tooling. I basically saw the company flashing right before my very eyes.
But now that I know that it's just firmware that needs to debugged and reprogrammed, I feel a lot better about the company staying alive.
What Unicomp is doing is equal parts crazy and equal parts respectable: they're trying to keep the old Model M keyboard alive, and they're even trying to continue to make it here in the United States (which not even Model F Labs have attempted to do as all of their classic Model Fs are made in China). But, I'm at least glad to hear that the issues with the mini can be fixed in the near future.
Hopefully, this creates a turnaround that the company so desperately needs. They've basically been treading on thin ice financially since the former IBM executives purchased the entire Lexmark Keyboard factory (machinery included) located in Lexington, Kentucky back in 1995. To see the company go under after all they've done to keep it alive would just be heartbreaking.
The right Windows/Super and Alt key are swapped in the wrong position. Look at where the right Alt button is on the classic.
Yeah I saw that. Not sure why they set it up like that.

btw. youtube new layout. not cool. it hides comment section and the front page is not as useful. and if i do comments. i can't like the video. it's bad design. i'll just use css to eliminate the comment section. so this could be one of my last. thanks for the video !!
Is there a wireless / wired version? Or white? What is a modern alternative w/ Windows Office & media keys?
No wireless and no media keys as the lord intended.
Well, Unicomp doesn't trade with my country (Brasil). You would not trade this new model M with me, would you?
how does an m compare to an f
How to replace the ugly Windows logo?
Unicomp sells the Tux Keycaps on their website, it's under buttons and parts.
@@EJ22bakadesu Oh. I see now. Thank you! 🙂👍
All 10 of my classic IBM PS/2 Model M keyboards I pulled out of the barn are going belly up. I'm skeptical if these new ones would last... if the original ones can't last just sitting in a barn doing nothing for 35 years then... do I want a new model that's the same design. These things are suppose to be good for millions of key presses, not to craap out after a month of use.
I've had a few Unicomps for a while now and outside of the teething issues on the Mini M's controller that Unicomp fixed they've all be fine. I got a really early serial number on those. Even my much dreaded UltraClassic no one seemed to like is still going. IIRC about 15 years ago Unicomp had some issues with the tooling wearing out so cases didn't align correctly or keys were printed funny but they seem to have solved that now. I've got no complaints about their customer service that's for sure. The keyboards last a while but the molds don't, until fairly recently they were still using tooling from the 80s and 90s to make these things.
Hi
I do not have the interface of this keyboard Thomson Reuters Part No 10-11-5254, please help me how to create an interface to connect to the pc, thank you🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I don't know much about the old Reuters boards but if they're like the Bloomberg ones they don't convert easily.
You sound like Dream.
Those blue L.E.D.s are fucking sinful.
yeah.
They replaced them with green ones. Worth it.
Disassemble and put a slice of colored gels for film sets over them to change the color.
why don't they stick to the original layout and get rid of the windows keys... the most annoying and useless keys ever.
I just replace them with the Tux keycaps Unicomp sells usually. I do find them useful for switching IME in KDE and GNOME among other things. I'm not a big Windows user.
Man they just can not get this right. Still no metal plate on the back. Non-detachable cable. One piece keycaps. Are you serious. Just copy the thing you made in 1987 exactly. I can see I'm going to have to become an expert at restoring original Model M's because Unicomp is still churning out junk.
AFAIK no Model M had a ever had metal outer casing, just the Model F XT. The Model F AT switched over to plastic. I should know, I own enough of both. The Unicomps still have a metal internal plate, the just changed the membrane backing material from rubber to vinyl (maybe for durability? IDK) so they sound more pingy compared to the old IBMs. Some people in the community used to mod their old Model Ms and remove the rubber sheet for a different sound so I don't see that as a problem.
@@EJ22bakadesu Would you consider the experience of this Unicomp or an Apple Extended Keyboard 2? Alps versus buckling springs. How would you describe the comparison and what would you recommend for a daily driver?
I can either get one of these or a vintage Apple Extended. If you had to chose between the two what would you recommend and why?
@@EJ22bakadesu real model m's last forever. lexmark trash wont make it a year with regular use.
