- Remember when computers used to come in your favorite shades of off-white and gray? Now you can relive the '80s and '90s with a new beige USB keyboard that's "inspired by the Model M", and a new beige USB / PS/2 mouse.

Brings to mind the IBM Model M2 and the Dell QuietKey. Not bad!
If nothing else I'm pleased to see more beige and gray being manufactured at a low price. Might be worth grabbing as a generic keyboard for random old clone PCs.
Dell Quietkey is exactly what I thought of too!
Also, I was sure he was going to pull an Intellimouse out of that box, I know they rereleased it recently.
The shape is identical to mid/late 90s IBM rubber dome boards the KB-8923 and later KB-3923. The model number on this one also being 3923 made me think they're related or from the same OEM. Took a look and it does appear to be Chicony as the OEM, it's on their awful website www.chicony.com.tw/chicony/jp/product/KU-3923
I still own my Dell Quietkey. What a beast.
@@St0rmcrash Appropriately enough, Compaq also has a version of this exact keyboard, also called the KB-3923, which I think is roughly contemporary with the Deskpro EN in the video (maybe a bit older)
I just bought a new old stock dell quietkey and I love it.
That mouse definitely has the vibe of something Microsoft doesn't actually realise they're still selling.
It's in one of their bulk Business boxes that get normally sold to IT departments in mass.
Now we just need a modern beige case. Preferable one without a window and massive rgb show.
i like RGB
@@BeautifulAngelBlossom get out
Look up Evercase, they're a UK company that still sells a couple models of beige cases.
@@junkdata6242 Both my towers (mATX & ATX, housing a Core2Duo server/NVR and an AMD gaming system respectively) are beige Evercase supplied cases, modern inside, retro outside, and they're pretty sturdy too unlike a lot of tinfoil cases these days... :)
IIRC Lian Li used to have some but they effectively ditched their whole portfolio sans the Lancool RGB UNICORN PUKE series. Or at least that's what the current website implies.
9:56 "We interrupt this VWestlife video to bring you an even more VWestlife-esque segment"
@@tarstarkusz I would upload it if I had a recording of it. (p.s. Poland was an Eastern Bloc country, but it was never actually part of the Soviet Union.)
Microsoft makes a great mouse, it never once blue screened or asked me to validate the serial number. That WRSU clip was a trip, good stuff
Can't tell if you're being ironic, as I had a Microsoft Wireless keyboard bluescreen/hang Windows setup quite a few times.
Nice. All we need now is for beige cases to make a comeback.
There's nothing stopping folks from doing a home respray.
Look up the checkmate amiga plus 1200 case. It’s a brand new beige case
and we need a beige mouse that works like modern mouses.
edit: didn't fully see the video
I agree.
I like the new channel profile picture with the "VWL" license plate. I kinda like the look of that keyboard.
I like the new profile pic too
I'm sure most people who watch this channel don't realize that it was a picture of the band that the channel was named after and wondered who the picture was of anyways lol
@@JaredConnell this channel has become one of my all time favs. He really asks the questions I would have when talking about old tech. No other channel appeals to my nerdy interests more than right here.
That's part of his car's license number, and it was selected completely at random!
That should have read: "Beige is back, baby!" 😉
@@tarstarkusz To me, beige is what computers become when they start to yellow
@@tarstarkusz Beige computers came in a variety of shades, from subtly off-white like Tandys to nearly brown like the breadbin C64.
@@vwestlife well bread is brown, so that gets a pass from me!
@@tarstarkusz Wikipedia describes says, "Beige is variously described as a pale sandy fawn color,[1] a grayish tan,[2] a light-grayish yellowish brown, or a pale to grayish yellow." Websters states it's "a variable color averaging light grayish-yellowish brown". And the American Heritage Dictionary states it's "A light grayish brown or yellowish brown to grayish yellow." So, yeah, it's beige.
@@tarstarkusz Well, those definitions disagree with you. So ... take it up with the people at American Heritage and Webster's.
That Microsoft mouse has been sold definitely over 10 years, that was the mouse I used when I built my first computer from new parts which was pre windows 8
The "Alt Gr" key in the spot where the usual right Alt key is would be another indication that makes it stand out from the usual 1990s U.S. keyboards.
No CZcams ads, you are the man!
Microsoft Basic mouse "white" delivered:
everbody: oh no! it's beige! 1 star out of 5.
VWestlive: it's beige! YAH!
The quick, *sly* fox jumped over the lazy, brown dog.
I guess you could open up the mouse and glue some metal parts inside to weigh it down?
Thanks for the video!
The 0 key is probably grey because manufacturing cost. There are no other beige 1x2 key caps on the keyboard so they would have had to injection mould it just for this one key. Right now they can use the same blank cap as backspace and print 0 on it. Cost of moulding and logistics adds up with large volumes.
If the form factor is different from backspace, I have no idea why they made it grey.
No, they have not the same form factor. They are very similar, but not the same. I wonder why the 0 key is gray too. It could be a mistake or a deliberate choice of the designers. Or even it could be due to avoid copyright problems, if the original coloring layout is still owned by IBM. but after so many years, all the patents should be expired.
Can’t believe you still have that Deskpro, you’ve had that for YEARS
I bought one of these keyboards a couple of years ago partly due to nostalgia and partly because i was tired of the modern black / grey types available today. It's a wonderful keyboard for the price. I love it.
I love these old keyboards, I have mods that make these rubber dome boards feel mechanical with solid bottom outs, as well as using grease to decrease rattle. Not many mechanical switches come close to the tactility of a good rubber dome.
I would enjoy a video on your modifications.
I like the way you insert random clips related to something that you have mentioned, like that 2001 Euro Changeover ad from Ireland.
Microsoft has been making those basic optical mice for probably the past 20 years. Looks like it got a bit of a redesign giving it an updated look (and the modern Microsoft logo), but otherwise, it's the same exact mouse they were selling in 2002. Hence why it comes with a PS/2 adapter in the box, haha.
I bought a new serial mouse on eBay recently. But I think it was... ahem.... “Microsoft”. It’s complete garbage.
from the label, I knew it was Microsoft since it's the same label design with their CD/DVD
Thanks for putting this review video together. It's nice to find affordable brand new gear in old school styling.
for me beige is the color for a serious computer.
I had an IBM PS/2 486 back in 1993, had a similar mech keyboard, that brings me back... thank u ❤️
I bought this a couple of weeks ago, I’m using it for my semi-professional DOOM Deathmatching career, absolutely brilliant.
I've used that mouse since 2012 - nearly a decade of faithful service. Recently the scroll wheel got gummed up, so I replaced it with a (black) Classic IntelliMouse. The IntelliMouse is not only heavier, but much more comfortable in the hand. It also cost more than twice as much, so there's that.
polish hour, nice :)
The WRSU clip was really something. I forget that you're in New Jersey and every so often being reminded makes me smile.
That keyboard reminds me of The Amiga 500 from 1987 🙂
Yeah. They look similar.
I remember these beige keyboards as a kid. Who's a 80s born babies and used to go to the computer lab at school to work with these keyboards❤❤❤❤❤
That’s nice! I just installed beige keycaps on my keyboard :d
I just bought the Periboard and the EXACT same Microsoft mouse, and then right after buying it, this is recommended to me. Great video!
My first computer in 1999 had a Euro on the keyboard, but you couldn't access it with only shift, it was sharing a key with something else.
I am new to this channel and I'm sorry I didn't find it sooner! Wow!
Good stuff man!
YES! I'm going to experience again what it is like to have peripherals with that vintage and classy colour! :D
Beige should never have gone out of style in the first place. When I see something black, it doesn't say "computer" as much as the beige stuff did.
Copiers and printers have held the line for 20+ years maybe one day someone will decide a beige terminal will look good next to them and start making them again
back in the year 2000 I got a new computer with Windows ME and everything was Beige the keyboard looked similar to the one in the video. I first started to see black computers in the mid to late 2000s.
Even though I have and prefer more gaming oriented peripherals, the key switches in that keyboard sound SUPER GOOD. This keyboard sounds way softer and “smoother” then the Cherry MX Blue switches in my current keyboard. It also looks really nice, giving that nostalgic and modern feeling, without the boring/harsh look of black (even with RGB LED keys). Overall very nice! Mouse looks super cool too.
I had a perixx vertical mouse (and an identical one branded by anker) and it was really good
I just bought the same keyboard and went to look for a review, to find I bought the same mouse! Amazing review!
Nice little combo set, I'm still using a 20year old PS2 Dell keyboard with the wavy windows logo. Still types nicely.
I have the black one of this same mouse. I'm using it since like 3 years even tho it's not my primary mouse and so far so good. Perfect for the price.
Perixx makes great stuff and they have a huge product lineup.
I’m all for nostalgia and a Polish hour, but beige PCs and peripherals is something I really don’t miss.
AJAZZ AK510 also does a beige keyboard but with RGB like a lot of gaming style mechs nowadays. It has really noisy blue clone switches and rattles quite a bit. It does include backlit SA profile keycaps though witch is pretty neat.
BTC rubber dome with slider keyboards are some of my favorites and can (sometimes) be found for really cheap.
Another great video, Kevin! Keep it up :)
Kevin is back too ! I'm happy to have something to watch tonight
There is a mouse called the "Cherry USB mouse," it looks quite old by modern standards but it still has a beige colorway and it still being manufactured and sold to this day unlike the microsoft mouse.
it may not be as ergonomic but it's still being made and still comes with a PS/2 adapter without being too cheaply made. it costs about $15 too. and yes it's that cherry, the ones who make keyboard switches, they make good quality rubber dome keyboards too. the cherry stream is quite a nice keyboard that could fit in with retro computers, but it's more like an early 2k's laptop keyboard.
I love this channel!
My 2019 Unicomp Model M keyboard with US layout has the new Windows and context menu keys, but it doesn't have the euro symbol on the 5 key, and the right Alt key is just labeled Alt. (And they had the brilliant idea to swap the right Alt and right Windows keys, the only bad thing about this keyboard)
Also I had no idea optical mice could work with a USB to PS/2 adapter, my cheap Logitech optical mouse doesn't.
I have the exact same mouse, Microsoft also makes a beige keyboard, although it doesn't have that retro look
Perixx are good keyboards. I had one for many years which I changed recently but they have great feel.
I don't know why I find this keyboard so appealing but I do...definitely going to pick one up to try it out.
Is it weird that I found that Polish pop song at the end strangely catchy?
Also, cool keyboard. Always nice to see new retro peripherals!
How nostalgic it is! The keyboard is exactly as the one I had)
UPD. Oh, that radio recording... I'ь somehow shocked to hear it O_o
I bought this keyboard a few months ago, it is very nice.
I have these keyboard and i like it brings me back to the 2000's not bad
There is a beige version of the Durgod Taurus K310 mechanical keyboard, which I can highly recommend! Very good quality and a beautiful minimal design.
Beige is beautiful.
Love the video, and the uxwbill reference!
That mouse was the Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse for Business based on the plain box . the retail version comes in fancier packaging . I know the Intellimouse is back in production fully upgraded with modern technology.
I've never heard a keyboard beep before.
The PC does, not the keyboard.
The beeping sound comes from the PC speaker which is activated in the Toggle Keys section in Accessibility control panel which can be accessed by holding down the shift key for 5 seconds.
This brings back so many memories of the computers I had in the early 2000s. Is it made from the kind of plastic that yellows after 20 years?
Love the DeskPro EN - I used to have one as a kid, planning on getting another one at some point.
Sounds like a southern city. "Deskpro, Ennessee"
Perrix knocks off my favorite mouse, the wired Anker vertical ergonomic. Dang thing is identical as far as I can tell, except it's way cheaper. I wonder if this keyboard is a similar re-badge/no-badge or knockoff.
I remember a time where silver and sapphire coloured keyboard peripherals were also sold inbetween the transition from two tone beige and gray to black peripherals.
last mouse i had was red. i liked it, it stood out
I just ordered several of the beige/white ps/2 keyboards I could find on Ebay in the $20 range. I got a Kensisngton comfort-type(with the angled keys), a Logitech, and one other. I had a vintage keyboard die from water exposure, so I wanted to get them while the getting is good. Many of the used keyboards I could find were in the same price range as this new one.
*PERFECT*! I am ordering one at once! I have been looking for this for quite some time. Tank you, tank you, tank you! :D ~Cindy! :)
Welcome Back 1990s Computing Keyboard & Mouse, We've missed you!
The WTC2 climber mentioned in the audio clip made his climb on May 26.1977.

After three weeks of use, I love this keyboard. I make fewer typos with this one. I also have an ASUS Flare mechanical and I can't type on it. I spend more time fixing typos than actually typing in the first place. Maybe it turns out I'm a membrane kind of typist. You owe it to yourselves to try it. I used IBM keyboards, and some of its better imitators, back in the 80s before we started getting computers with cheaper boards. This has the layout, but it doesn't at all feel like an IBM. IBM's were brutes, this is delicate.
I wonder if beige/off-white is about to make a comeback for computers? That would be interesting. I think silver would be really cool though.
I found an old Packard Bell mechanical keyboard with rare brown linear Alps switches and it had a really strong smell to it. Just kind of a sweet chemical smell to it. Not exactly like a new car but that same kind of smell.
I use an older, black version of that mouse that I found at a junk shop years ago. It's pretty good
Since I assume this is a standard USB keyboard (in terms of the transmission protocol used), so it will work fine with a Mac but with one major caviat, the Mac Command (CMD) key will be the Windows key on a Windows keyboard by default (w/ Alt being Alt/option). You can however remap)swap these two keys within macOS system preferences so the Alt key is Command and Alt/option is the Windows key if you wish to stick with your Mac muscle memory rather then have to remember the Command key has moved one place to the left (Windows key). This is something I wish Windows could do easier as I always disable the Caps Lock key whenever possible and in macOS it's a system preference option but on Windows it requires a register hack not for the faint of heart.
LOL I have those same beige HK speakers, & they still work perfectly. The used to come bundled with Dell computers back in the late 90s/early 2000s. Beige forever!
6:10 LGR!!! haha I'm still amazed you still used the same camera after binging years worth of your videos, every video feels nostalgic to me, even this one is newly uploaded :)
Yes, I have been using a Canon Vixia HF200 for most of my videos since late 2015.
Oh my. Didnt expected youve replied! Big fan of ur channel for years :) greetings from the Philippines! :) learned a lot from you.
Ajazz AK510 is a not-too-bad-for-its-price retro style keyboard. Various Leopold keyboards are also exist in beige. I miss that colour on my desktop...
I really like perixx stuff. Their cheap keyboards are suprisingly good. Thinking about getting their compact ergonomic keyboard that's a rip off of the Microsoft natural keyboard but it's modernized and compact
I have their ergonomic keyboard and it's great!
Wow! Even in the 70's people said less when they should have said fewer. I don't remember that.
What’s missing is the enter key being the old backwards L shape leftover from its use as the return key on typewriters.
I used a Corsair K63 mechanical keyboard and ended up going back to a rubber dome keyboard. I prefer the Microsoft Wired 600 keyboard and it's better for me as I do lots of typing. Microsoft makes a white version of the Wired 600 keyboard too which I have actually seen used in sets in TV shows set in the 90s. The white mouse shown in your video comes in black with the Microsoft Wired Desktop 600.
The molding on this keyboard looks to be completely identical to the IBM RapidResponse KB-3923, which I use as my main. I got it new-old stock from a relative years ago and I unboxed it about a month and a half ago. Disappointingly, although the key caps were two-toned on the box, the actual board only had beige keys.
Apparently There's a model of my IBM board that has a back plate; the 8923 I believe. I'm curious as to whether this new board has the plate or not, though I very much doubt it. My old IBM board is a very, very nice board to type on though, easily my personal favorite board.
Thnx for another great video 👍 This keyboard i feel i want to try. Beige is definitly a colour i want to go in the future.... for all my computer gear. I wonder if there are retro towers to buy maybe 🤔
I thought black was so cool at the turn of the century but now that EVERYTHING is black I could go for a little “beige rage” in the computer section… that and small white stoves
@vwestlife are you still using that acer ku 0906 keyboard? I just purchased that after watching your review actually. Also, I bought an older logic tech mouse but I noticed even when I crank the speed it’s still slow for me. It may have to do with resolution of my monitor which is 2560x1600.
Other modern keyboard manufacturer that I can think of making beige keyboard is Realforce, they still making new Topre keyboard in beige colorway (at least with their keycaps color, the case is white), but being a Topre keyboard is the price quite steep for basically a rubber dome keyboard
I've still got my original keyboard from my Packard Bell in 1995. Really clacky and satisfying
For rubber domes, the HP/Key Tronic keyboard of the 1990s is a very tough act to follow.
I still have that Compaq Deskpro, although it's been out of service for a while owing to my screwing up its Windows 2000 installation by unwisely deploying unofficial updates. Had that never happened, it'd probably still be the workbench computer. I expect HTML5 media is going to be a bit much for the Pentium 3 these days.
8:00 uxwbill moment
Perixx is small manufacturer, not really known and widespread in Germany. The products are quite ok for the money
that keyboard reminds me of year 2000 early 2001 the days of Windows ME I got a brand new keyboard back then looked just like this one but the Windows keys was the old logo.
I really like lighter colored peripherals, black on Beige/white is much easier to read, especially without needing a backlight, makes me wonder if black colored peripherals contributed to the popularity of backlit keyboards these days.
Great video! Thanks for letting people know about this keyboard, and the mouse!
I love the keyboard reviews. Although not just a keyboard, would you ever review a Raspberry Pi 400 with its built-in keyboard?
I reviewed the Wintel K3 keyboard PC which is the same thing except with a Intel CPU system running Windows 10.
@@vwestlife Cool ^^
Watching it now ^^
I have enough of old off-white keyboards laying around. And it seems to be only available in US layout.
But Varmilo has a good variety of coloured keyboards, albeit a bit expensive. Especially the MA105M at around 200 USD here.
Ive bought this to use specifically with the A500 mini, would love to replace the Windows keys with Amiga keys
The shape of the keyboard is just like the rubber dome boards IBM used in the mid to late 90s, the KB 8923 and the KB 3923. I believe at least the 3923 was made by Chicony as the OEM, and versions were made for other companies like Wyse as well. The fact that this still has the 3923 model makes me think that either Chicony still makes this as the OEM or that someone bought their old molds/tooling and kept the model number, guessing the KU insead of KB indicates the change to USB. Even before reading the model number the bottom looks exactly like my IBM KB 3923, which also has the laser etched keys and seems to be a cost reduced model compared to the 8923 that had silk screened or dyesubed keys and a thicker bottom
As an aside the fact that it's an ANSI board but they left the Alt GR key on it greatly annoys me along with the Windows and context menu keys not being gray/pebble colored
This keyboard may or may not be a rebranded Keytronic Ergoforce. This is the same keyboard that was also sold as the Das Keyboard Mk. 1, which is essentially this in black with blank keycaps. It’s known for being one of the best traditional rubber dome membrane keyboards. As far as I know the Ergoforce is no longer produced with a PS/2 plug, although I have a 106B and I love it even though I’m usually a mechanical keyboard guy.
2:01 I suspect that mouse was intended to the Brazilian market since it says Feito na China (Portuguese for Made in China). Also, 10:35, History of Mystery part two by the German band Triumvirat. A German song in a video about a 'German' keyboard, the plot thickens.
"Heerdter Landstraße" isn't actually the neighborhood they try to hint in their advertisement when they talk about "designed in Düsseldorf". (that would be either the fashion boutique KÖ area or Stockum with it's art&fashion academy and fairground or even Niederkassel with the probably highest BMW X-series density anywere).
that neighborhood is simply a former heavy industries district which was converted in the 1980ies/90ies for logistic hubs of big japanese brands like Kyrocera, Nikon, Ricoh and since Y2K it has shifted to china im&exports.
BTW: they sould have at least licensed some sound effects from KlingKlang Studios in MintropStraße (where the Kraftwerk albums had been recorded)
I can dig on the beige
