- With Fallout the Series finishing and being a very good adaptation of the world of the games, I thought it best to take a look into one of the wasteland's prominent factions, the New California Republic, the NCR. From its origins as a Vault settlement to the country spanning force it is by the time of New Vegas, let's look at the Bear of New California.
This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
Thanks for watching!

The reason I like the NCR is it shows time has passed since the bombs dropped and civilization has started to reemerge. What started as an idea in the first game became a regional superpower 5 games later.
"The Ranger vets are on their way from Baja. I've never seen one before, but I heard they chew nails and spit napalm."-NCR soldiers
Yeah, the new guys coming in as support are always legendary badasses. Troops tell themselves stories like that to keep up morale.
I really hope season 2 of the show has the NCR coming back from the brink. It was always nice knowing that no matter how bleak things in the Wasteland could get, the NCR was out there at least trying to make things better.
Idk, the end credits for the last episode made it look like House and the NCR kicked each other's shit in.
I doubt its in the brink, shady shands constituted only 5% of NCR population.
why? Bethesda destroyed the West Coast so they could have their damn theme park bs on the West Coast. For that they can F off.
@@jayrodmurderface Things could always change and we obviously shouldn't keep future things TOO beholden to the obviously stylized presentation of end-credit graphics, but someone on Reddit took a pretty thorough look at what was shown there and it really looks more like the NCR and New Vegas forces were fighting deathclaws together. The dead securitron we see is slashed up, not shot, for example, and there's dead deathclaws scattered around.
@theboard6082 hmm, that would be an interesting route to go. I wonder if the courier will make an appearance. Nothing front stage, more like in the background
In the games, Shady Sands is in the Yosemite area, but the show moved it about 300 miles to Los Angeles.
The NCR was also very big by the time of New Vegas. According to the show, Shady Sands had a population of 34,000, but by Fallout 2 the NCR already had a population of over 700,000, and that was 40 years before New Vegas.
Shady Sands was also not the biggest city in the NCR. Several of the NCR's cities were as big or bigger than Shady Sands. There's the Hub, a large trading center that was also the center of the water trade. The Hub is the reason why bottle caps are used as currency in Fallout since the water traders built their operation from a bottling plant and repurposed caps to be used as money.
There's Vault City, a city built by Vault dwellers who were able to use the resources of their Vault to establish an advanced settlement. They're very technologically advanced and the people are highly educated. Although, they did use wastelanders as slaves during FO2.
There's the Boneyard, several settlements built over the ruins of LA that joined together. It had the Gun Runners, who have a weapons factory and supplies the NCR with military equipment. There's a medical university established by the Followers of the Apocalypse. And the Regulators, a law enforcement group that patrolled the Los Angeles area against raiders and mutated animals.
There's New Reno, basically the entertainment center of the region. They have gambling, sporting events, alcohol, drugs. It's like a smaller Vegas.
There's Dayglow. It's where the Followers of the Apocalypse was founded, a group dedicated to educating and helping the wasteland. They go around building schools and hospitals. Dayglow also has a large ghoul population.
There's San Fransisco, populated by survivors from a Chinese nuclear submarine. They used materials from their nuclear sub to build a high tech city with an advanced science lab and factory. They produce some of the most advanced weapons in the world, like Gauss Guns and Plasma Rifles. They're also trying to genetically engineer a plant that can absorb radiation so they can use it to clear up highly irradiated areas and make them habitable for humans again.
The NCR also had access to several Vaults and their pre-war technology. It had Vault 15, the people of Shady Sands came from that Vault. It gained access to Vault 13 after Fallout 2. And Vault 8, which founded Vault City.
Note that the billboard in the show said that Shady Sands was the _first_ capital of the NCR, not just "the capital". Similarly, Philadelphia was the first capital of the United States, but that changed over time. Apparently at some point before it was blown up to fail to make a point, the capital was moved from Shady Springs to somewhere else altogether (which, along with your descriptions above, make me wonder if that new capital was the Hub - sounds much more suitable to the task).
The NCR is my fav Faction in all of Fallout.
Respect and keep up the epic work.
"What happens when the cattle ranchers have more power than the sheriff? The whole town burns down."
That doesn't make sense.
Why would the cattle ranchers want to burn down a town?
@@GODCONVOYPRIME It's a quote from the Fallout TV series. It's a reference to a Western movie one of the main characters acted in before the war.
Another character uses it as a way to explain how the military industrial complex is using its money to essentially take over the government of the USA.
It is very likely also a reference to how the NCR was usurped by a cartel of Brahmin barons i.e. cattle ranchers, although that is obviously not known to any of the characters at the time.
@@GODCONVOYPRIME It's also not meant to be taken completely literal, as it's a metaphor for how capitalistic business interests eventually lead to the damage of everything.
Yes, more Fallout content, please! I don't know how I missed your previous videos on raider and the BoS.
It's "Caesar" was pronounced with a /k/, not an /s/, at the start in Latin, which is the reason it's pronounced as such in the game. It's a nod to the fact they aren't simply cosplaying.
And them not having a single ubiquitous pronunciation shows that they really are.
It is also clear for everyone who had Latin lessons at school.
i am King of germany...and above grammer!
@@dot2562 I think you refer to "Ego sum rex romanus et super grammaticam!" (I am the king of the Romans and above grammer!) a quotation of Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor.
Caekar?
I haven't played any of the Fallout games, but I thought it was funny seeing House in shock when you explain to him that you've defeated the entire NCR.
YES, MORE PLEASE! I enjoy hearing these details bc I've never played it, nor am I likely to invest the time into doing so. Thx, Ric 😀
Here is a vote for more Fallout content. Your work is awesome and appreciated! I don’t play video games but love the other media that is based on them, so I need a primer for the universe.
Great break down, would certainly like more Fallout content from you!
The best outfit ever made!
Perfect for any apocalypse!
Certifiably Ingame, my trek know it all comming in for the fallout lore. i cant wait for all your fallout videos to come.
My opinion on the NCR has always been "Bless em, they're trying."
Most of the time, anyway. Next time you play FNV, ask Ghost what her opinions are.
Right off the bat, a long and decayed road trail.
The NCR is the best faction in any fallout game for the actual state of the world it exists in, period
Eh
Well too bad the NCR it doesn't exist anymore
Lmao no
It's not the best it's a repeat of the old world which is definitely the problem it's just capitalism 2.0, all they do is remind you of the old world and most people think that's better when in fact it's just stagnation all over again the best faction is Mr House.
@wolfbane7497 : It still does, it's capital isn't in Shady Sands anymore.
I would like to vote "Yes" on more Fallout lore.
Im glad youve finally got into fallout.
Great vid bro! 😁👍
The NCR is my favorite faction in Fallout. Though my heart goes out to Lyon's Brotherhood.
Glad you could do a video on the NCR and detail the overall lore and history of the faction. I'd really love for you to do more Fallout videos, maybe Ceaser's Legion as they are a pretty major faction in Fallout as well.
In New Vegas, not Fallout in general, and I think between Caesar's misunderstanding of how the Roman Empire operated and his brain tumor, the Legion is destined to collapse within a generation. It depends on his (questionable, imo) charisma to keep the legions in line; Lanius' methods, while effective over the short term, have historically led to overthrow in the end.
Yes please! More Fallout content!
More Fallout please
The outfit fits all kinds of sci-fi themes and old west themes!
Giving the people what they need
3:44, by 2296 the NCR continued to exist for many years & its capital was not Nuked off the map over a Marital Dispute. Perhaps many decades later, it's internal corruption & it's expansion outpacing its ability to expand its ability to maintain territory leads to internal conflicts & Balkanization into several smaller states with communities caught in between suffering the excesses of the Wasteland
Please make a video explaining the history and culture of the alien race that look like Blue Elephants from the Star Wars franchise please
One plays a great keyboard, that much I know.
those are called Ortolons, and they're *tiny*
Love it when you jump into other universes for lore
Literally, the same day, loI decided to finally play New Vegas LoL
New california is not yet lost!
It would have been neat if you showed a bit of footage from Fallout 1 and 2 here, Vault City, NCR City (Shady Sands) and New Reno are all lovely to look at in Fallout 2
Can you do the Star League from Battletech?
“Why in the world did you attack President Kimball?”
He wanted to take my taxes
@@MatthewCobalt "Understandable"
RIP Shady Sands, never thought I'd feel sorry for Californians
could you make a video about the cute, 3 eyed robots? when i saw them in the show i instantly loved them (i love most unique robots from most shows, dont judge me lol)
No judgement here. Robots are cool.
Oh, the Mr. Handy. Yes, I'd like a video on that one.
The fact that there are technically 3 models of the thing (Butler, Babysitter, and Military), it makes it a cool way to showcase the wackiness of the pre-war world.
@@MatthewCobalt Mr. Handy, Miss Nanny, Mr. Gutsy (although the Gutsys frequently have a rank designation indicating how powerful they are - a Colonel Gutsy is not an easy encounter for most individuals). They're fun, especially when they've been spending time trying to adjust their programming to adapt to the new world (and usually failing). My personal favorite such encounters are the Sgt. Gutsy in charge of security at the General Atomics Mall in Fallout 4 (it was due to open on October 23, 2077, but the man with the key died in the toy factory when the bombs fell), and the Mr. Handy and Miss Nanny who are a random encounter in Fallout 76, just floating in the middle of a road taking turns asking each other questions.
SCIENCE!!!
Heres hoping that the destruction of Shady Sands doesn't mean the end of the NCR in the show.
No reason why it should. Nations have moved capitals before and been fine; the US used to be headquartered in New York and Philadelphia.
The Minutemen are the best faction in all of Fallout, at the end of Fallout 4, if you chose to side with the Minutemen, every settlement would be well protected and would have sufficient resources for everyone in the Commonwealth. It a syndicate, a loose group of people with common interests, that help each other.
And they're the faction least interested in "controlling" the wasteland.
Pls more Fallout content!
It's been a minute.
Do the legion soon, please
Index video on The Fallout Power armor.
This is one I am considering for sure, already making notes
More fallout content!
Shady Sands is less than 5% of NCRs population.
Rick probably won't see this but the pronunciation of "Caesar" is actually an indicator of allegiance, in Fallout. People who say it "Ky-zard", (i.e. the way the romans would have said it), are pro legion, people who say "See-zer" are anti legion or indifferent to the legion
That is a cool detail I did not notice in the game! I guess that makes even the narrator antiLegion, lol
The series finale should be the ncr being restarted
What makes you think the NCR is gone? Shady Sands was just a city. According to the lore dump in this video, the NCR includes some much better candidates for a capital - were I involved in their government, I'd have been agitating to move the seat to the Hub from the moment they joined.
Yeah, Caesar is pronounced like that in Classical Latin, also v is a w sound, so "Ave" (Hail) is pronounced "Ah-way" which is weird.
I’ll take more Fallout content.
Its wierd hearing your voice talking about Fallout. I can't untie it from Star Trek lore.
Lore. Lore never changes.
EDIT: Actually if Trek has taught me anything that's really not true, lol
@@CertifiablyIngame Insert Lore and Data Meme
HOWDY RICK😂😂
I know that alot of people like to dunk on the NCR but for me they were always the best way for the people of the wastelands to have a better future.
Sure they arent perfect but still the fact that they dont allow slavery and actually accept mutants made the whole 'well some politicians are corrupt" talking point irrelevant
Where on earth did he get the footage from ?
Most of the footage in this video is gameplay footage captured in Fallout: New Vegas.
Indeedy 'twas from Fallout New Vegas (with a few mods on to make it look nicer)

Says "Caesar" with the proper, correct, classical Latin pronunciation. 👍
Immediately apologizes for the weird pronunciation and blames it on the post-apocalyptic setting's language changes. 👎
🤦🏻♂️
:D
GO my favorite faction that was completely wasted by the show because they just wanted to use Hollywood but not the actual location's lore like Adytum or the followers
*is still very salty about it*
like i'm sure we'll be seeing them back as a properly in future seasons but MAN did they just throw away a lot of good story potential, from BoS terrorism to LA gentrification to the effects of imperialism/colonialism, to just have a generic wasteland that could had been placed anywhere.
It's dean's design ffs.
Dime made it iconic, for dean...
I'm a big dime fan but he didn't design it.
The zero fucks given is because they no they'd get flack regardless.
moar plz
Nice, I got the 666th like...
Im sorry the death of shady sands wouldnt kill even a weaken ncr it had sandiago the new capital vault city and the hoover dam
Exactly! Agreed
fonv bored me
This is the one time i have to give a hard no. It wasnt a good adaptation. it showed that Bethesda destroyed the lore for the games. Games they had no damn hand in creating. Black Isle studios created Fallout.
The NCR represents the fanbase for Fallouts 1,2, TACTICS, and FNV. The East Coast games represent the Fallout Themepark created by Bethesda Game Studios.
Unless Amazon and Bethesda grow a pair and admit their acted out of malice or Stupidity, from here on out anything made by Bethesda in terms of a Fallout game is hereby NOT CANON and they will be reminded of it DAILY.
Have fun with that.
lol
I feel like an experienced Ranger could take your average BOS in power armor.
