  • Hippy Shake the Toy Poodle LOVES playing it her toys. But that wasn't always the case. It was a lot of work to convince Hippy Shake that her toys were lots of fun to play with. She liked toys, but she wasn't a big fan of interactive toys. She didn't really like toys as a reward, and it would be important for us to use them as a reward when we would play dog agility with her. She didn't naturally tug either. It took a little work for her to enjoy the game of tug. And we really had to work on the value of a tug toy for her to understand how to play tug of war. In this video you'll learn how to teach your dog to play tug of war, and how to help your dog to love playing with dog toys!

First of all I'd like to apologise for my english. I had five difficult years of having a dog not playing with any toy. My dog is seven years old now. I found him two years old stray, already growned up and not interested in any kind of toys. The only thing that triggers him is food. At first I teached him to high five two years ago. But still when he comes across with a ball he avoides it, like a dodge ball player. So today was the day. After this video, I sayed to my self that I would try to teach my dog to play with a ball. I have an antistress ball very soft and bouncing. The one side has a little hole perfect to fit a small "reward" for my friend. I've put in there one treat and fill my pocket with plenty , to see how he will react. First I got his attention to the ball and every time he looked at it I reward him with the ones from my pocket. That was the first five minutes! Next five minutes I throwed the ball and as soon as he was going to it I gave him a treat! In the next few minutes he grabed the ball with his mouth and brought it to me. I almost cryed! I gave him all the treats I had in my pocket! For the rest half hour we are playing fetch in the living room and my husband left his office just to watch us playing finaly after all this time. My advice don't give up on your dog. Yours might need a lot of time but it's worth it!

I have an 18 month old Corgi who just stopped playing. Over the summer he progressively stopped playing fetch or chase the ball...all the games we've played alot. He's been in for check ups and he's fine. He hangs out in the living room with his head under the coffee table but he will come when called, snuggles on the couch and sleeps with us closely. We take him to day care one morning a week to play with other dogs and the staff always marvels at his energy level! Love to greet people eon his walks but is a terrible walker. Constantly stop and looks behind.
The grand kids came last weekend and he played with them in the yard like crazy, chasing them around and chasing the ball with his usual high pitched yelp! But after they left, no playing with me!
He'd fetch the Frisbee in our large fenced yard and chase the large beach ball like crazy. I've been trying to re-teach playing with games like hiding treats, substituting a squeaky toy when I throw treats quickly. Nothing seems to engage him, Even the flirt stick which he'd chase around the yard and throughout the house is a bore to him now. I take him outside and we play 'find the treat' but that's it and it's short lived.

Thanks for this video! I just a moment ago finished trying a couple of the tips with my five-year-old Chihuahua, who's the tiniest dog I've ever personally met. Even some of the XS toys are too big for her!
I liked the tip (some of the tips were in your replies to comments rather than the video) about rewarding even so much as looking at the toy. Also the tip about movement and about getting down to their level. I got out a crackly long flat cow that occasionally has interested her for as much as 10-20 seconds, along with some invitation bacon treats crumbled into little bits. We worked for just a couple minutes, with her getting a taste of treat for looking at it, then for making the effort to walk a couple of steps over and get the treat bit off the toy, then for poking around the toy with her nose after she already ate the bit of treat. When she thought to lift up the edge of the toy with her nose to see if any was underneath, that was rewarded too. Now the toy and treat are put away, with Alexa instructed to remind me a little later to do a couple more minutes. (One reason I historically have sucked at training a dog is the difficulty of consistency given my ADHD.)
Q: Kong makes some small animal-shaped furry squeakers she likes a little, but the poor baby can never get them to squeak when she bites down. I've tried repositioning the squeaker, but it's just hard for her to get the darn thing to squeak, and when I can hear her trying and all that comes out is the sound of it flattening weakly (it definitely can squeak, because my mom's Maltese can do it nearly every time). Anybody know how you can make them a little easier to squeeze?

Brush your poodle every day to remove loose hair, dirt and mats. Use a soft slicker brush, gently brushing against the direction of hair growth. Rub a little cornstarch into any mats before separating them with your fingers, starting from the ends and working your way toward the skin

My dogs grew up free roaming in the forest and they won't even flinch at a ball or frisbee or tug toys. When they get excited about going for a walk Keyphrase: "let's go for a walk!", 1 in 100 times ONE of them will grab a toy and throw it around, but only until the door opens and then forget it! Now that they're on leash duty, they can't run free so they're kinda bored in winter. Their best friend, a big lab, will play fetch for food... and they literally watch him run for the ball and that's it. ONE of my dogs will play if I put my hand under a furry blanket and move it around. The other sits in the window sill. I think they're part cat. HALP!

    Oil for Dogs
Coconut oil can add moisture to your dog's skin and prevent flaking. It also helps freshen up a dog's coat if used with a light touch. ... Since coconut oil can be given orally, you don't have to worry if dogs lick themselves after it's been applied to their coats

What would you do if you can't tug or play ball? We have a GWP, hunting dog, and can't play that way. He doesn't want to play with his toys, so when we're not training or walking, he doesn't know what to do and therefore his biting has increased. Even with bite inhibition training.

That’s a great question, Julie! Some dogs don’t find toys as gratifying as other dogs do. You may be able to find a middle ground to start your dog on playing with toys! Have you tried playing with any food toys? There are some tug toys that have a pouch that you can put treats into. There are also some retrieve toys that you can do the same with to create a little more drive for the object. Make sure when you’re trying to get him to play that he doesn’t have to compete with your other dog for the toy. While you’re trying to get him more excited about playing with toys, follow the steps in this video and try lots of different toys until you see some interest from him. Then be sure to put that you away, and only bring it out when it’s “playtime”! ~Ken

Well, my issue is that my pup will play with me but he won’t play alone. I feel bad bc when I leave him home alone he just sleeps. I’ve given him Kongs filled with treats, add other chew toys in there and he’ll sometimes start trying to get to the treat but then I guess gets bored bc when I come home I see him bring it out with him to finish trying to get the treat out. But if I give him a Kong when I’m home he’ll stay busy trying to get the treat just not when I’m not around.

To keep your precious poodle's coat shiny and healthy, brush it daily, clip it monthly, choose a high-quality dog food and use a shampoo especially designed for poodles. Brush your pup's fur daily. Eighty percent of a poodle's hair is the undercoat or secondary hair, so it mats easily

We live on a farm, so they spend there time outdoors and come inside to snuggle. I’m the past they’ve gone long hours and days without much interaction, just guarding the house, but I’ve tried to change that recently after noticing them sleeping the day away and seeming unhappy. I take them for daily walks and groom them and have just started leash training after watching your videos, but we have never really used toys before. How do I teach them to play? Also one of the dogs gets very jealous when I try encourage the pup to play and ends up chasing her off, growling and putting her on her back, so she is then scared to come try play when the older dog is near. I really want them to experience playing because I see other dogs have so much fun but I’m unsure how to begin, so if you have any insight or suggestions on where to start or video recommendations please please reply!

Hi there, Saskia! Be sure to stop the game before your dog decides that he doesn't want to play anymore. Tug for short periods and make sure you take the toy away before your dog has grown tired of it. If your dog stops playing and won't tug until you throw the toy again, your dog has taught you exactly how they want to play, and not the other way around. Make sure that you play the game on your terms! ~Ken

I grabbed their kong chew ring tossed it in the kitchen, or ball. All balls are put up till we play ball. They destroy all other toys. Squeaky toys and ropes are shreaded. One of the dogs knows when we going to atop play time and snatches the balls and won't come in. That has gotten a lot easier now. Poor things all they know is their toys get taken away and put up

We just adppted her 2 months ago and shes so happy but she just wont eat or play. Shes so picky with food and if we gove her something new, she will it eat but if she keeps eatong it she will get bored again. It only takes her 3 days to get bored of what shes eating and just wont eat. Im very worried for her cause she always runs and plays alot but never eats. She usually only has one meal a day. Sometomes i give her the edible chewing thing but it only takes her about 2 minutes and just gets bored again. I only know that shes good at running so i take her on walks but aside from that she just doesnt do anything at all.

My dog loved toys as a puppy but now that she's 4 she doesn't seem to have any interest in toys. She'll look at them when I show them to her but she doesn't touch them

A simple infection can cause localized baldness and other skin problems in poodles. ... Your dog could also be going bald from a severe infestation of fleas or lice. These pests don't normally cause your dog to lose his hair, but he may damage his skin and pull his hair out as he scratches the bites

Not every dog is toy motivated, some dogs are more food motivated. Watch this video to figure out how to use treats in your training in a sustainable way! czcams.com/video/z1YWAM2sZGs/video.html

@@McCannDogs I should have mentioned that's she's not treat motivated either, atleast not the treats I have :( it makes holding her attention and training very difficult she's a 9 week old presa canario, mostly just sleeps and has accidents lol.
Thanks for taking the time to reply :)
