    It’s so funny to me when people think y’all use trained dogs in the videos as though y’all aren’t professional dog trainers with more skills and experience than the average bear. Hoping to be as calm and patient as Kayl when I bring my pup home!

    Excellent advice! The game of tug when they return to you is critical, this totally changed things for our pup. Also, leaving her wanting more makes every new game even _more_ exciting! She SPRINTS back to us every time now, it's incredible (and adorable)!!!

    Thanks for this different approach to teaching fetch. My girl Lucy is almost 3 & never really caught on to fetch when she was younger. She’s a sensitive dog, so my training with her has had to change & go much slower, calmer & gentler to accommodate this. Overcoming the motion of throwing an item was a milestone in itself. I’ve been trying to teach fetch for a while with different methods & kept getting stuck on the retrieve part of the fetch. Lucy would chase & paw at the thrown item but wouldn’t pick it up & bring it back.
    After one week of teaching this method Lucy is well on her way to mastering fetch. In this mornings session she was anticipating the throws & getting very excited to chase & retrieve!!!

    My Pomeranian has been hesitant to actually go after the toy, nevermind bringing it back! But tonight (8/12/21) for some reason, he decided to start to fetch. I was excited but wished he had picked better weather. It was HOT ☀️🔥 and humid with no breeze. He lasted about five very enthusiastic fetches then was ready to go back inside. 🙄☺️ Here's hoping when the weather cools, he'll be willing to fetch again. 🤔

    Another mistake people make is pretending to throw the toy and hiding it behind your back. My husband did this with our last puppy and he ended up being a retriever that refused to retrieve! lol. On a side note, I love your videos!! I've been watching all week in preparation for my new puppy on Saturday.

    How does this work with a dog who resource guards? My dog is highly treat motivated but would not take kindly to me trying to take back a toy with food in it. In those cases I have to trade with him to get him to willingly give up the toy. The problem then becomes he stops fetching as I have the treats as opposed to the toy containing treats.

    We had a dog very similar to Barney that was a rescue and a blast to play with. It was bittersweet to watch Barney and remember him. We adopted what we think is a corgi- chihuahua mix that is 7 years old and she has zero play drive, but is food motivated. She's a little stubborn, but smart so I'm going to try to teach her this. Thanks for all you do.

    A couple of questions. I noticed that you get down on the ground in the beginning, I am somewhat disabled in that I can't run and I can't get up once I am down on the ground, especially quickly. How can I train my dog, (6 years old) to do the early stages of this without getting down on the ground with him? Also, I live in a very small one bedroom apartment, with very little space for play. What ideas do you have for a place to go that is not going to give too many distractions? My dog is somewhat food motivated, but not at all toy motivated. If you can help me on this I would really appreciate it. Thank you for all that you do through your videos.

    Thank you Kayl you’re amazing. Our problem is our pups bring it back but don’t want to drop it out of their mouths. They put the death grip on the toy and it turns into a tug match or prying their mouth open to get it back. We’ve been working on “drop it” because when we say “out” we mean “outside”. The “drop it” isn’t always successful. Any tricks to get them to drop it?

    I was just watching first day with Euker. I bought a snuggle buddy with heartbeat that comes with warming pads that go inside.
    But now I see that you don't have anything in her crate.
    Was the snuggle buddy purchase a mistake on my part?
    We haven't brought our pup home yet.

    • @carpediemgirl1
      @carpediemgirl1 Před 2 lety

      We brought our pup home at 8 weeks and I was also concerned that if she didn’t have anything in her crate it might make her feel cold and lonely - I decided that as the McCanns don’t put anything in the crate because of potty training issues I would see how it went with a comforting bed in the crate. The crate was small enough that she couldn’t push the bed out of the way in order to pee, and it all worked out fine. I would try with the snuggle buddy and see how it goes - you can always try afterwards without it, if if it doesn’t work out. Good luck!

      Hi Gustavo. My Westie did the same at that age. When he bites you, even if it is a gentle nib just say "ouch" as if it really hurt but don’t remove your hand fast as it may motivate him to chase the hand. Keep doing this and be consistent and he will grow out of that habit
