  • For new puppy owners, puppy play is the best part! Being a dog parent involves understanding dog play, which includes training games, fetch, tug toy, and a flirt pole. It does not involve a laser pointer. Depending on your dog's breed and personality, he may enjoy dog jumping, dog puzzle toys, or dog chasing. This video will teach you how to play with a puppy indoors, how to tire out a puppy, some fun dog tricks, and more! Michele Lennon with How to Train a Dream Dog can teach you all about puppy playdates, the best dog treats, canine enrichment, appropriate dog play, what to do about puppy biting, and puppy potty training. You’ve found the best resource for dog training and puppy training.

    Thank you for watching How to Play With a Puppy - 10 Tips For The Best Experience. What is your puppy's favorite way to play?

      My puppy is too young to be sold yet. I do go visit her at least once a week, though. She can't really play anything, yet. I'd say her favorite thing *to do* is sleep, since she's so young.

    My 3 1/2 year old spayed female German Shepherd loves playing with her new puppy. She helps me a lot! Of course I play with him also. I actually bought him because she was so depressed after our senior GSD passed.

    My 1 yr old male dog loves to play. His favorite is a yellow rubber chicken. He brings his toys to me so I can throw it around or he can tug it from me. He goes crazy when he is in mood to play. My 10 mos old female dog does not like rough play. She loves toys with treats inside. She can play with it for hours. She does not even want to approach me unless I have the toy with treats or she wants a belly rub. When they have zoomies and play together, it is a riot! Glad to learn something new. Thanks!

      We are so glad this video was helpful. Training is a good way to bond with your dog, but only if you are both enjoying it! Play and mental enrichment are other ways to enjoy your time together!

    Little Lou, our 9 week old Great Pyrenees loves his puzzle feeder, playing tug, and chewing nonstop on anything he can sink his shark teeth into! He also seems to like fetch! He is crazy smart so we are working hard to engage him!

    Love your work and I have learned so much. Your calm and focused demeanor has helped me keep puppy experiences in the right perspective. I have boy/ girl littermates. Any more advice would be great. They play great together and I am working on separate play dates and separate outings and puppy classes with a friend to help. It’s a lot to do. How much time/ week should they get an outing independently? They are healthy loving 6 mos old now! Black Lab mixes……

      Yep! For some dogs, it's a great activity. Not all dogs are made for hiking, though. So just pay close attention to your dog's body language to ensure the activity is right for him/her.

    Lucie Lu absolutely loves her squeaky toys. She'll bring them to me & sort of shove them at my hands so she can get me to let her tug on them. Then she'll squeak it for a bit & bring it back to me & we start over. If we're not playing that game, she takes it & squeaks the heck out of it. Sometimes it goes on & on & I have to distract her with something else. I've never had a dog who loves to squeak! And she also likes the flirt pole. Being a Standard Poodle, she likes to jump although we discourage it. With the flirt pole, she can pounce on it all she wants without really jumping up.

    hey! so i have a question. suppose i get a puppy at 12 weeks of age during the holidays that last 2 months. so i have a schedule for her that i can follow during the hols. so when i have to go back to school she’ll be anout 5 months of age. there is a helper at home who can help with letting her out. but can i slowly change her schedule so its more fitting to school days? also will puppys of about 6 months recognise that weekends might have diff schedules? thank youu
    also is 12 weeks of age too old for a puppy?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  Před 2 lety

      If you have an option, consider keeping the puppy with the mama dog and siblings until 10 weeks. Here is a great video with more information on puppy schedules: czcams.com/video/7tVJSbcHJVw/video.html

    I have a question….(I’m sure I’ll have a lot more questions). I am thinking about where to keep the crate. We have a fairly large 2story house that mostly has hard wood floors. The only places with tile are 3 bathrooms, the laundry room and the foyer. Is it too confusing for the puppy to have more than one crate? Is an upstairs crate and a downstairs crate too much? Where would you put the crate?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  Před 2 lety

      There’s not one perfect location for the crate. You’ll have to determine the place that works best in your home and for your puppy. We usually recommend that the crate be kept on the same floor as the door you go out for potty breaks. This will be a frequently traveled route and to avoid accidents you’ll want to make it as quick and easy as possible.
      More than one crate is fine as long as you positively train your pup to be in every crate you are wanting him to go in. For example, just because you have trained him and he loves the crate upstairs doesn't mean that training translates to the crate downstairs.

    My Husky puppy is pretty well strange now at 11 weeks old the only thing she's always done since 6 weeks old is jump she jumps up on us she jumps up on the couch she jumps and lunges every time she plays alone or with us it's frustrating because we've always discouraged the jumping tried to play floor games but she leaps into the stuff on the floor just so she's still jumping in on way or another 😞 that is her habit and she loves her reflection we have a cabinet that has a mirror in the case, and our big screen TVs upstairs and down show her reflection at first she was scared now she's just curious but I don't want her to become obsessed with lights and reflections 🤔 there are so many things that you've spoke about that are bad for our dogs joints and stuff or things that can become bad habits later such as giving treats to play fetch I used to use treats as positive reinforcement for everything while she was younger I had to slowly wean them away because she became obsessed and wouldn't do anything unless rewarded. She still sometimes expects it even after she's been naughty she thinks "oh but now I'm good cuz I sat in front of the treat table so I deserve one" LOL it is unrealistic for her to be eating all day long she even boycotted eating out of her own bowl at meal times because of the amount of treats she was getting she wanted me to hand feed her everything now that I've stopped that and she's eating out of her bowl again she thinks every moment of the day is treat time because she's food motivated, in my life and I've never had so many concerns, questions, and conflicting information on literally everything about raising my husky puppy. I feel like every dog's different and we should all just do what we think is best and what works for our own individual dog thanks for all the great tips tricks very informational video 😁
