@_Waluigi every movie has a message lol. bullet train is clearly trying to say that all our little stories that we see as the world are just from our perspective, and reality is actually way more chaotic than anyone can imagine, even with the mathematical definition of chaotic. any belief that anything about life makes sense or revolves around anyone in particular is a narcisstic delusion.
As someone that read the book, I was actually surprised and kind of happy that they kept the Thomas The Tank Engine stuff. If you can believe it, there’s A LOT more of it in the book. And they incorporated it better in the film.
This movie is probably my biggest surprise of the year so far. It was much, much better than I expected it to be. Especially visually, and the editing.

This movie was a BLAST, but if I had to nitpick.. I wish the fact that White Death had mistaken Ladybug for Carver was revealed at the very end until after the train crash, instead of the scene where Ladybug handed the suitcase over.
I mean, it seemed like the whole point of White Death's cliché backstory and him grandiosely scheming the whole plot was all just to make it all come crashing down at the end when Ladybug was humorously revealed as merely a stand-in for the assassin who Mr. Death was after.
Because honestly, the idea of the entire villain's role in the story being purposed for just ONE joke should've been presented more properly.

I actually liked the thomas the tank engine bit and how it eventually led into the plot, i just didn’t like the explanation of it being to tangerine, who should know already lemon’s fascination of it. If it was explained to ladybug or something, that might’ve worked better IMO
I think the payoff for that bit is excellent but *damn* i wish they hadn't set it up again and again and again and...
I feel like this movie was rushed, isn't as polished as it should be, or deserves to be.

I love how every story ties together. Idk about stupid. It's well crafted with likeable characters you grow into based on their backstory/personality.

I love that there are problems you pointed out and that people in the comment section are saying they're loving this film. I think films are trying really hard to play it safe (marvel takes so many cool directors and waters down their styles to look formulaic). It's great that this movie is decisive because it means it makes a statement. And the biggest take away is that, this may not be the best film for everyone, but this could be someone's favorite film.
For me, I enjoyed the action.

As a lifelong Thomas the Tank Engine fan, the first time Brian Tyree Henry brought up Diesel I burst out laughing. The Thomas bits never got old for me, though I understand I'm kind of in the minority.
It's a stylish movie, and we need more stylish movies.

I loved the twins so much in the movie because their chemistry was so good and entertaining to see however I really didn’t understand why tangerine had to die the way he did
It felt like there was no purpose of his death other than to have lemon be sad about him and jump into the water to eventually kill the little girl. I hope they make a movie with just the twins and their adventures because they really are soooo good as a dynamic

I mean there really didn’t need to be a “purpose” for him to die, literally most of the main characters either got nerfed or had a fake out death. So him dying, although he was my favorite along w his twin, kinda made sense.
He checked that lemon was wearing his bulletproof vest earlier in the movie and lemon said its not gonna help me if I get shot in the neck. So tangerine who is also wearing his vest died by being shot in the neck as a parallel to that. Shame though, he was my favourite character and probably best acted role in the movie.
if tangarine lived he'd probably kill prince, and prince wouldn't been able to bait her father into taking the gun that got him killed. so i say his death did serve it's purpose.
The Prince gets away with more than she deserves, she’s too lucky for her own good and Tangerine dying was proof. His death also relays how you’re supposed to feel about the characters. Tangerine dies in such a shitty way and Lemon with his corpse makes for a very sad scene, you’re supposed to feel sad when he dies. Then the Prince gets killed in a comedic way, a way that’s revenge from Lemon and also a middle finger from Tangerine from beyond the grave, her death is a joke, played for laughs, you’re supposed to laugh when she dies but be heartbroken when Tangerine dies.
Loved this movie, It's comedy was a bit hit or miss but the action and colorful cast heavily makes up for every other mistake in the film

The complaint I got from my parents who watched it under my recommendation, is that it was too fast for them to keep up with. Which is, understandable, but the fast paced action was exactly why I loved the film.

In the beginning it was meh bc we didn't know these ppl. The 1st time I laugh was that dude who was the 17th kill 😂. But yeah, the comedy kicks in once you get to know the characters more.
The emphasis on one/two-on-one duels really made this for me. Too many action movies are just destroying crowds of mooks.
Also, big shoutout to the movie for doing so much with just the interior of a train. Small-scale spectacle is an art increasingly ignored.
I think the fact that it all takes place on a train means that physically only one on one/two fights can happen

movies story. Each person had different morals around life and killing just like how the tank engines have different attributes. And how both are metaphors for life
this is how an action comedy should be. it’s a genre you shouldn’t expect much from, but this one does it’s job.

I feel like there’s a big wave of people that always have this negative point of view for these new upcoming movies, always trying to find small details to downgrade them, that surprisingly they’re never able of actually liking one. Some opinions I can understand but this movie I feel like it’s main target was obviously the comedy with a plus of action, I really enjoyed it, I’ve never laughed this much in a movie theater, the cast was amazing the same goes to the characters, great purpose on each of one of them and amazing plot twist that at least for me, I never saw coming. Loved the cameos as well, I just loved everything, for me it was about the experience and the great time that I had with it, this movie really isn’t looking for it to be the next Oscar worthy and life changing storyline, this movie’s main target I feel like it was for the audience and the enjoyment.
I agree why can't movies just be fun not all movies need to be serious and have modern social issues cramed into them.
Loved this film, full of action and jokes and the Thomas the tank Engine bits are surprisingly important (this critic is cleary a diesel). Reveiwing it like its a piece of high art is bloody rediculous. Like the Deadpool movies it's absurd Warner bros. style cartoon violence and it's SO much fun.
just because it’s fun doesn’t mean it can’t still have flaws. it’s a movie at the end of the day, and it’s alright to want more from them.
Indeed. There is a part of me that enjoys how colorful it is, the action at times, the "twins" were solid the whole way, the momonga character and even certain surprises, but there is also the feeling that it felt way longer than it should have been and was quite overwritten in some results and puts me of two-minds with the film. Also, I actually love the monologing villain trope, but even at some point by the end, I was just hoping for this to pick up the pace and stop with all the talking and that is a bit damning for me in writing.
I also thought it was longer than it needed to be but I’m not sure what part I could’ve done without.

I really loved this films style and cinematography, and if I’m going to be honest, I LOVED the Thomas bits. But I think that’s largely because one of my friends is a big Thomas fan, and seeing/hearing his reactions to the Thomas comedy really added to it 😂 but I do agree that the jokes weren’t always on point.

Honestly seeing good action blockbusters like Maverick and Bullet Train back to back got me hopeful for a future with less Disney-marvel cinematic universe trash and more original high and mid budget film.
See, I also don't believe they thought the audience was dumb when they showed all the connections of the characters. In fact, I think it was actually an incredibly smart play on a common movie trope. This movie actually references LOTS of common tropes from stories, such as Lemon and Tangerine literally pulling off the death scene from Romeo and Juliette, and the weak, defenseless girl trope. But the most important tropes they played off of is the murder mystery on the train trope. The idea of that story type is that there's always one person who essentially set up the entire arrangement of people. Every single person was on the train because of the results of one single other person, or dare I say, because one person tried to "control fate". Yes, that's what I think the story is really about- the idea that no one person can control fate, and that in attempting to do so, in trying to make their own murder mystery on the train story, they didn't account for simply dumb luck. They didn't account for the fact that Ladybug would effectively alter his plans because fate let it be so. And in the end, Ladybug realizes that his bad luck wasn't luck at all, nor was it bad. His luck was simply fate taking course. And by the end of the movie, when the light is shining onto his face, only to be blocked by the old man who shared this wisdom with him, he stops letting his own perspective of fate blind him like the light in his eyes, and see it in another perspective.
That was my take on it anyway. I loved it so much more after I realized these details.

The sound design for this movie was so bizarre. I don’t know if it was just my theatre but the music was insanely loud but some scenes, like the bit where lemon and tangerine count their kills, had garbled audio 😭

You should read the book, it’s a lot better, less comedy more thriller. The Thomas the tank engine bits is a big part of the book so I get why they kept it.

One detail I liked is how the women fought. I am so annoyed by tiny women in movies throwing men who are double their weight around lol. The women in this movie used other ways to beat the men they fought, either poison or deception. It was a nice detail I noticed

Bullet Train feels like a movie that somebody, or a group of people, wanted to make for a long time. I went into it knowing exactly what it would be and went out just slightly surprised. It's zainy, it's slick, it's dope, it's got some healthy "I'll give you that one" type laughs, and it's just all-around a fun watch whether alone or with friends.
It's not the film of the year, and everyone involved knows that. It's just a pleasure.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a good comedy at the theater, this movie was a blast
I've walked the full circle on this one, first I thought it was just Brad Pitt needing money, then I liked the trailer, then I saw who was the director, then I saw the reviews and yesterday I finally watched the damn thing and thought it was in fact really good
I guess a downside would be the obscene amount of montages on this thing, although some of those are worth it

The backstories for all the characters are nicely done. And the performances are pretty strong.
The fact that the twins were West Ham supporters and ‘Bubbles in the air’ played when Tangerine found Lemon’s body was so poignant.
Also the Thomas references were spot on, really great device to understand the Twins’ relationship via the dialogue.
I could not stop laughing for the majority. It knew it was a silly absurb action comedy with OTT action and story but hell ya it was funny and had me hooked and entertained
I’m my opinion I never thought the Thomas the tank engine motif was a joke, i thought it had comedic moments and elements but more importantly served story purposes, I think it’s well used when they identify characters by each different train revealing to other characters their true nature

I honestly found most of the jokes pretty funny, but I will say the Thomas jokes do get pretty grating pretty fast, but otherwise I thought a lot of the other little quips were actually pretty funny. Plus, I feel like most of the better comedy bits come specifically from the action in a slapstick sort of way, and some of the deaths are pretty over the top in a darkly comedic fashion, so overall I was pretty impressed with this movie. Plus SPOILERS but the water bottle bit was pretty great not gonna lie.
The Thomas the tank engine thing wasn’t just a joke , it tells you a lot about the character personality about how he sees things , and shows a sweat side of him , and it flashes back to his childhood when he is watching the show with a toy train.
It also makes the sticker scene kind of touching , I said is more of a character trait than a joke
Based on the trailers, my expectation for this movie was pretty low. I went in expecting a forgettable action movie. I came out talking with my friend about all the foreshadowing and story plots we caught. Overall, I think this movie is worth a watch. It’s a whole lot of fun.

I think the only part of this movie I really didn't like was how often ladybug resorted to using therapist talk when it was a life or death situation. He saw repeatedly that it wasn't getting through to them, and still tried to use it even when his life was on the line. Against the wolf he talked sensibly, saying things like "can't we just talk this out?", but then later he says things like "there's this wall between us, and it's glass..." which takes longer to say and is far less helpful in getting your peaceful intentions across.
This movie just became my comfort movie. It’s so great and they way we see those twins mourn for each other? My ghad CINEMA give me more angst!
At first I felt the same when I saw the trailer I was like it’s original but it just didn’t really sell me but I went to go see it today and I was surprised how I was entertained it wasn’t a bad movie some jokes landed some didn’t but the performances were pretty good I think people should watch this

Bullet train was a kooky, crazy and silly movie that made me absolutely love the movie. My personal favourite part of the movie was the lemon thomas the tank engine bit. It never got old for me
I was looking forward to this film because it is Karen Fukuhara's first big movie role since Suicide Squad 6 years earlier. Nobody but me talks about the fact that this girl we know from The Boys, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts and Suicide Squad also plays Sewer Queen and Alexis in Craig of the Creek. I thought it was quite unusual that she would take little roles in animated series when Suicide Squad and The Boys had much more fame to offer her, but I am also proud of her for wanting to try acting parts in a variety of media early in her career. I also noticed that Joey King is there in Bullet Train with her, and shortly after this she became Winifred from Hamster and Gretel, who is the opposite character of Alexis from Craig of the Creek. I just thought it was very cool that Craig of the Creek and Hamster and Gretel both have somebody who rode the Bullet Train with an all-star cast surrounding them. With other big roles Karen and Joey have had before Bullet Train, it makes their names stand out more among other young CotC and H&G voice actors in their generation. November 14, 2022, 1:01am
I knew from the trailer I wanted to watch it. The music is really fun. The flow of the story was told in a unique way - that actually worked! - and the over the top characters still felt grounded. Lemon and Tangerine steal the show by the end for me. You can tell after the train crash that the movie isn’t trying to take itself so seriously if you’ve seen it.
The theme of bad luck is just a reminder of how even though things didn’t turn out the way we wanted, the fact you made it past what could’ve been worse is actually a testament FOR the good luck your having!
Honestly the only joke I didn’t like was the prince asked the father “what’s his name again?”.
and i 1000% agree that only bad bunny’s backstory scenes felt useful and necessary, and he really commands the screen. i was super disappointed when his character was killed so early on

I’m not defending some of it’s comedy, but I’m gonna say, the Thomas the Tank Engine bits WERE IN THE BOOK. Yes this is an adaptation of a Japanese novel.
Whenever a Hollywood modern movie is good I always check out If It is based on a book. 80% of the times It is.
The dumbed down humour kinda worked for me, especially with Lemon and Tangerine. Insisting that they’re ‘twins’ even though they clearly aren’t and riffing off each other childishly sent home the point that these two are children at heart despite being violent hitmen.
I like Bullet Train for it knows what it is, and doesn't try to cater to anyone. There needs to be more movies that stay true to their concepts
I loved it. I can't tell if you're hypercritical of the comedy or if I'm just a plebeian. The CGI wasn't great for sure and the flashbacks were a bit overdone but I think the movie was great.

not a movie critic but I enjoyed my time. The humor hit for me as well and for a lot of people in the audience. I kid you not there where so many reactions from the audience. Laughing, gasps, etc. This wasn't a quiet crowd and they couldn't get enough of it
The trailer kept making me think of Smokin Aces fused with Hotel Artemis
The amount of interconnecting parts is so great, it's brilliant fun. The only issue for me was the pacing - the film could've shaved 10/20 mins off it I feel

I loved the movie and imo there’s just a right amount of both action and comedy. The only thing that bothers me a lil bit is some unrealistic stuff. I know it’s a movie and some realistic stuff might get in the way of the storyline and what the movie was supposed to be, but the fact that for example their was no conductor for the train in the first place, the pesky worker that was asking for tickets is never seen again when the action picks up, and I know there are scenes when a worker walks by during a fight scene, but it never feels like the actors are really in any danger with any of the workers or any kind of authorities. I know the action and comedy are the main points of the movie and most movies might have some unrealistic factors obviously, but am I the only one who was bothered by these small things just a lil bit ?

Didn't see the movie yet, but for what I am seeing it's probably not as good as the book
I was surprised to find out that Lemon's obsession with Thomas and Friends was actually in the book! They just chose to keep it in this adaptation. On the other hand, they changed "The Prince" character, who is a guy in the book.
I honestly wish he/she was just as evil in the movie as in the book.
Jokes about Thomas the Tank Engine are HILARIOUS
I adore the book tbh. I think that the editing tried to capture that because the book went between the POVs of the main characters. I liked Lemons Thomas bit-it was a book thing and idk about the movie but in the book it played really well into the plot.

@@MagicalGirlFia I agree. Nanao is supposed to be this seemingly kind and a bit awkward, stressed out guy in his mid-twenties, and Brad Pitt just doesn't give off that vibe, yk? He was by no means terrible in the role of Ladybug, but I kinda wish they picked someone who fits this description more. I preefer book Nanao
@@MagicalGirlFia I also kinda wish The Prince was more like his/her book self. I don't mind the gender change at all, but I wish she was just as evil and cunning. She mostly just fake cried when she was in a thight spot, and while Satoshi also often relied on the innocent kid act, as much as I hate to say it, he was pretty smart. And just way more creepy and interesting overall.
Felt like all the deleted footage from a Guy Ritchie film. Sadly felt like it was trying too hard to be funny and unique.
I overall liked the movie. But it was a sort of "I liked it a bit better than the average 2,5/5 movie" thingy.
It wasn't great. It also wasn't bad.
I honestly was just really thrown off but the horrible special effects. It looked genuinely trash.
Brad is also great, but then again Lemon for me was the best and most developed character which felt weird.
I also didn't laugh a single time. Deadpool 08/15 humor is just not my thing i guess. And I'm fine with it.
Actually now that I've written down everything, I'm going to correct my letterboxd review down to 3/5 :D

Watched this film today with a couple of my mates. Yk what I had my scepticism about this film but wow. This was actually remarkably quite funny and witty. Was quite sad too at some points!!
But again good film with nice metaphorical meaning.
I loved the backstories! I usually get really anxious on flights so they felt like a little moment to breath

The trailer didn't pique my interest...but Heath of Cereal at Midnight reported that it was one of his favorite movies from 2022. The 4K looks and sounds great.
The Tomas the Tankengine stuff was lifted straight from the book. I did not expect them to put it in the movie. It didn’t bother me though.

Nah this movie was amazing the comedy was on point and one of the best movies I've seen in awhile

Personally Bullet train is my favorite movie of all time. Every time I’ve watched it in theaters (twice) I had a blast. This movie is tons of fun. See it if you haven’t yet.
This movie feels like it was made by someone who has adhd and I love it. I know it's not the best movie or anything groundbreaking but I was never bored which is not something I can say about every movie

this movie is a great time and entertaining as heck; I’ve been hyping it up with my buddy for the past several months saying “it’s Brad Pitt on a train, what more could you want?!”
And I gotta say it lived up to and exceeded the hype for us.

It reminds me so much of the tone of baby driver and man from uncle. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but has great emotional elements. Sometimes, that's all you need.
