i love these timestamps dr. K! keep it up thank you!
Really appreciate the time stamps! Love the vids! One thing I noticed: theory of mind is typically present in children by the age of 4-5 and they can generally attribute mental states to others by then. It’s children below the age of 4 that cannot infer another’s knowledge, beliefs, emotions, and intentions, exemplified in the False-Belief Task
I think youtube is rolling out a feature that lets you separate a video into chapters, putting the time stamps in the description does it.
One big factor was not really discussed imo :
First generation immigrate naturally feel like they have to prove themselves to fit in within the population : they don’t have a social identity based on the country where they were born and that create a strong need to build it themselves by achieving, being successful. Her father was a first generation japanese immigrate.
Yooo I did some EMDR back in the day! Not some miracle cure-all, but definitely calming at times.
"You're in the world where everyone is saying that a red-tailed hawk is what you should be, and you're a kestrel. And I think the people that killed themselves were kestrels that pretended to be red-tailed hawks and then realized they couldn't take down the kind of prey that red-tailed hawks go for." fkin hit home, man
Yeah this was awesome to hear.
I'm watching this late 2023 for the first time and I was completely oblivious to who Maya Higa is. Googled her and got back a result as "American conservationist" and regoogled as Maya Higa CZcamsr to get the same result.
I'm so happy for the Maya Higa 3 years ago and proud of what she's become.
Dr. K: your therapy sessions work as therapy for me and I'll always be grateful for them. I hope i can at some point as big an impact in the medical community
Maya needs to treat her therapist better or she's gonna lose him
fuck i dont get it
@Khaffit thanks ^^
LOL
classic
i saw an opening for easy likes and i took it
why is this guy more helpful than my actual therapist that is tailored to my personal problems and that I see in person???
Because a title like "therapist" is only indicative of what they do and not how well they do it. Psych is very dependent on someone's understanding of cause and effect and on flexible but consistent thinking. There are a lot of therapists that do cliche practices like asking you what your favourite colour is, something which is akin to considering the results of a polygraph as evidence.
Therapists don't work for everyone, you might not find the right one for you at first. Also that therapist might not be good with you but great with someone else
Then find a new therapist I went through quite a few until I found one I vibed with
That might say more about your therapist than Dr. K.
There are study after study that say the number one thing that affects the success of therapy is therapist/patient fit. If you don't feel like your therapist is on your side or understands you, you won't feel comfortable being truly vulnerable with them which is pretty important for therapy to work. So as others have suggested, try another therapist
She's far from being 'behind the curve' at 21. I didn't start thinking about what I really wanted from life until I was 25, before that I was always chasing other people's goals as if they were my own. Better late than never I guess.
I agree, from the age 18-25 people have an unreasonable expectation to know exactly how life is supposed to be at 30 and beyond. I started university immediately after high school in something I loved (mathematics, and still do) but what I thought was good reasons to start studying turned out to be bad reasons at 23. And that change of mind has probably been the healthiest for me. If you plan ahead too much, what's the fun in life when everything ahead is already planned?
Thomas Serrano You're right, what you need is a direction you're comfortable with but not a plan. What I'm trying to say is that plans inevitably change, for me it did drastically, and a lot of comes down to age and maturity. I made my plan when I was 18 (and I was overconfident in it) and at 23 I changed my mind. The same goes for love, I had someone I thought I would spend the rest of my life with, turns out that wasn't the case. And it broke me down because I planned ahead, and when that plan broke so did I. I don't want to say something cheesy like "live in the moment", but there's something to it.
Bruh, im 28 and still delivering newspapers. Pray for me

Dr. K is actually the most genuine and wholesome person I have ever witnessed. He knows how to be human.
1:03:22 this needs to be talked about more. Kid's are being heavily encouraged into STEM fields when their personality types are not geared torwards that profression at all and it's such an injustice.
by far the most common and some of the best right every school careers, we just need to not force it and teach kids they dont have to do this.
Fine line, you enter a scary world when you start to categorize people who are fit for professions based on personality types. You risk doing exactly what your talking about, just the other way around.
@@Bottlekap Exactly this. And for society to function we do need some pressure towards needed professions because there won't always be jobs for everything everyone wants to do.
@@devinjohnson8623 yes, most people don’t really know what they want to do until they really do it. That’s why hands on experience is very important.
Well yeah it’s the biggest money maker and money ensures housing, healthcare, childcare, food, etc. Your mental health tanks if you’re about to be evicted.
And you can do a ton of shit in technology outside of programming. Sales rep, program manager, training specialist, HR, etc
Maya seems very humble and in touch with her feelings. It's refreshing to see that charitable personalities like hers are popular with people.
i’m the same age as Maya, and i realized that while i was listening to her talk about her schools suicide rate like it was just some fact that she knew. That shit gave me chills, like i have actual goosebumps rn. It’s terrifying to imagine how many kids grew up in an environment like that, where they were all just barely hanging on to their will to live... it’s bad enough when it’s just your parents, but when it’s your peers and teachers and it’s ingrained in your culture there’s nowhere to get reassurance or support from. you’re left alone in your thoughts about being inadequate and broken and worthless. and then the moment you think about your future in the STEM field, you realize you’re doomed to a life of nothing but suffering and pain and worthlessness, and everyone around you tells you that there is nothing you can do to change that. i wouldn’t wish that kind of hellish anguish on my worst enemy. fuck.
As someone who's older (28) knowing what you want to do in life is crazy. I still dont fully know if I want to do this for the rest of my life or not. And that's actually fine. Not everyone should feel invested that they have to do something for 40 years.
Im 25 and something I learned getting older is no one knows what the fuck they are doing, they just all act like they do.
@@MrCaw77 slowly realizing this more and more. It just sucks alot of people you "trust" will lie to you about knowing just to get that one-up feeling. Got rid of alot of bad friends that way

Yeah she's great

He’s literally the best psychiatrist. He is always on point about what these people are going through.
Dr.K is such a genuine, great human being. He is pouring his heart into this and has really impacted the way I view things in life for the better.
You’re doing great Doc.
I really love watching these and picking apart my own experiences to formulate what I could do to change my life.
Although I’m not getting anywhere, I’m trying.
When doctor K is about to say something but, in this scenario Maya, keeps talking, and he visibly internalizes what she says even though he wanted to say something then changes what he was going to say, it really puts into perspective how much he is really listening, or at least it’s a brilliant way to act like he’s listening. Not saying acting like it is a bad thing either, it’s a great tactic to get your patient comfortable. So either way it’s pure brilliance, brilliant therapist/counselor/whatever he is.
Thank you so much Dr. K! I really needed this video it really resonated and reflected exactly how I've been feeling for the past few years of my life, which I've been pondering on
I hope Maya can come to terms with her success. The charity work she has done has been fantastic with her community she has built. Sure she has some stepping stones but most people who get hosted/raided are unable to retain those viewers, so obviously Maya had something there, she just needed the exposure which is hard to find on Twitch. Keep it up Maya!
Well if she wasn't dating Mizkif she probably wouldn't have retained it. A lot of her community are Mizkif's viewers, and support her because of Mizkif.
@@jimjones2287 Not true. People have a choice to be there and if shes not entertaining, they wouldnt be there.
@@DecimusXP Not true at all. I'm not saying she's not entertaining, but if you're a very community oriented twitch streamers' girlfriend you're going to get a lot of viewership. You're delusional to think that she would have the viewership she does if she never dated mizkif.
@@jimjones2287 My point is she'd get the viewership regardless of who helped give Maya a platform.

Maya is varry genuine and articulates her thoughts well for being on the spot. Varry relatable
Miz's and Maya sessions hit a lot of topics that were relevant to me. Awesome job!
I relate to this so much but I never had the pressure she had growing up so no idea how my imposter syndrom started I can see maya is awesome and def smart, very smart. Feel her pain.
Pressure can be different than just in expectations of success.
I love that he just went with the bird analogy to explain his points. My therapist does this to that he tailors examples/analogogies to thinks we talked about in the session that he knows are important to me and that I feel strongly about
Really good interview Dr. K, thanks for uploading this talk!
Seeing her back then and see her now it is amazing. She is a pure role model, her work is amazing and Alveus is probably the greatest thing on Twitch and social media. Can we please have Dr K at Alveus?
Lol i wonder what dr.k was thinking about when maya told him she was dating mizkif after the mizkif episode where it seemed like a major driver for him wanting to get better was being more attentive to his mom and his girlfriend.
Maya honestly is so emotionally and I'd say intellectually intelligent. It took dropping out, multiple jobs, an intense relationship with a huge equally intense break up and multiple types of therapy for me to get even slightly where she is at 24. She comes across as really put together and like she can take care of herself and I feel like that's seriously huge at 21 years old. Heck, she even jokes about her privileges in a way that shows she's aware as well as understands the dynamic for people who aren't as well off. I really hope she can recognise just how positive an impact she actually has not just on the people around her but people who watch her. She'll be able to do so much for herself and others which is hella exciting.
Intellectually intelligent

Reminder to not judge people's problems based on how "objectively" bad they are, but how they are living them (or just don't, it's not yours to judge). Something that for you may be a small thing may be a huge deal for someone else. Just because you don't identify with some of the guests doesn't give you the right to say they shouldn't be there. People have different problems and not all streams are meant for you.
This platform is essentially a gamer support group. The problems discussed should be prominent in the gamer community. Dr. K has said this hisself.
How is he going to refine his selection of guests if he never hears back from gamers about who we relate to and who we don’t?
@@dahadahaful I agree with the general logic of focusing on gamer problems, but at the same time, what makes a problem a *gamer* problem? As a gamer I related to some of the things she brought up. Maya could've said she plays games but she would've still had the same problems with the same grade of relatability. At the end of the day we're all people and we don't have too many different problems (like, think how many times Dr. K talked about not being good enough), I bet for many gamers this conversation was useful, so I don't see a problem.
@@dahadahaful Switch the "we" to "I" or "me, and we agree. Otherwise, don't speak for others. I'm a gamer, and this was INCREDIBLY relateable.

Another great discussion. I had no idea Maya did one of these.
This is definitely the session that I felt the "AOE effect" the most.
I've been struggling with what I have only occasionally considered to be something like "Imposter Syndrome", or anything worth diagnosing.
Even though I've brought it up in counselling over the years a label was never put on it, but goodness I really needed to stop and identify where those feelings come from.
The thought that you’re worse than other people is part of a larger belief that includes the thought that people can be BETTER than other people too. It’s insidious because the people who feel they are not as good as others believe that because they lack evidence that they are BETTER than other people. So they must be worse. But the truth is that human worth is immeasurable, and nobody has more or less worth than anyone else, which is why they lack that evidence. Until you do away with the “people can be better/worse than others”, you’re always going to be playing that game.
humans worth is measurable for sure. I would say that it's not static and it increases / decreases
Really amazing discussion.
10:08 gois quick clip it! We got em
What I love about these interviews is how human everyone seems, especially in comparison to their streams. Everyone becomes instantly more likeable and relatable to me.
Like their typical behaviour (on stream) is halted for a couple of hours and you get to know the person underneath just a little bit more.
Mizkif, although he's always been likeable, when you listen to his concerns about how his kind works, I like him even more.
Amouranth to me became more to me than just a 'hot girl' and I realised the depth she had.
Maya, I've always liked but I'm still watching. But I appreciate a peak into her mind. I feel like the vast majority of people on here are more willing to hold a resentment, like she says "she's only famous because of her bf" when in reality, everyone needs a bit of luck in life and yes, I know her because of mizkif, but I continue to watch because I like her.

"i think thats been ingrained in me and all my peers. what you should do is do really good in school, be really good at math, be an engineer or ? and go to a really good school. but nobody ever said you should learn how to train animals"
I've always felt that punk ideology is really healthy but it's really hard to point out reasons why. there's a big "be yourself/be who you want to be" part of it. like umm individualism over collectivism sorta philosophy. I was never confused or conflicted about who I wanted to be was just hard to know how to do it.
i sorta rejected the traditional route in favour of what i would enjoy, choosing happiness over money, then sortof ironically eventually realised that was electronic engineering and ended up going to university and all and doing nerd shit anyway. traditional money jobs were too boring and professional for me, and the arty stuff which i love wasnt brain exercisey enough for me. in EEE i get to be creative anddd use my brain. like if i'd have listened towhat my maths and physics teachers and uncles had said, then i mightve ended up in EEE anyway, but I think it's actually hugely important that I was the one that made the decision and understood why and how I came to that decision.
"Thought machines" are such a good way to understand the root of our positive/negative thoughts that is effecting our current selves

This is deep
SO I feel like it doesnt really matter what Im saying, because my brain will fuck it up anyway but maybe someone has a clue of wha I could improve about my negative thoughts, which is why im writing it: I basically have no idea how to get genunely happy in my life. Im 23 and feel very alone. I also have adhd but the bigger problem for me seems to be that I feel extremely selth worth, to the point where Im actually trying to seem more confident in extremely non authentic ways, like beenig overly proud of knowing a certain thing and trying to make others feel like I am better than them or something like that. And after I reflect on my behaviour I hate myself for it because it reminds me of my mother which is sometimes completely out of touch in terms of how beeing social with another person works. And even though I feel bad for saying it, she is basically somewhat of a typical "karen" (from the memes) and Im terrebly afraid of becoming one too. Its so weird, the last couple of weeks I had the feeling of being actually seeing how my behaviour towards other people is becoming more and more how I exactly not want it to be. I really dont know how to get genuine friends and be me without beeing scared. I cant even accept love for myself lately for some fucking reason. Maybe thats because im getting more fucked up, I don know. im so fed up with all of this shit, I really dont know what to do, please help me, I really dont know how I can restore the feeling of life getting better again.
It’s been a while since you posted this so I hope you’re doing better but if you’re still struggling with this I just wanted to offer a small thought. What I have learned recently for myself is that the first step to getting better is to accept where you’re at. Accept that you’re struggling, accept that things feel shitty, accept that you may suck at life. Then take some time to sit with the thought that that is actually ok, and that in any given moment if you can come up for air from the endless stream of thoughts, in reality you are actually perfectly you and absolutely ok in that moment. Once you can accept where you’re at and stop fighting with yourself to be something you’re not that’s when things start to change. It’s obviously takes a lot of work and seeking help is a great idea but maybe this has helped in some small way.
Has dr.K ever been to alveus? If not he should visit!

She is very mature for her age. Thank you for having her on stream, Dr. Kanojia!
I wonder if the high suicide rate was to do with not knowing what to do. Pushed to get these engineering orientated grades.. but they're aren't good at that , and don't enjoy it.. but what can they do, what are they good at? What do they change to ? I Maya's friends case she changed and majored in art, but if you didn't have that I can see it being very unnerving , not knowing what you're going to do ..
Dr. K's slight mistake in this video was overusing the "makeup" analogy. Maybe he didn't quite understand that *most* girls start to experiment and learn how to do makeup (or at the very least, self-care for things like acne etc) in middle and high school. It didn't feel condescending, but the better analogy was the kestrel and red-tailed hawk example. Otherwise, this is one of my favorite interviews, especially his quick and seemingly accurate noticing that Maya's thoughts of "i have accomplished a lot" and of "what if people think that i'm bad", were originating from different locations built on different experiences. This is a dude who understands ahamkara deeply (among lots other things haha). thanks!

I agree with what Dr K says. Even if you get a bump from someone or get raided. These people usually leave minutes after or just stick around for a day if you're not there cup of tea. For me personally I cant watch anyone for longer than an hour at most if ever. Watching someone play a game isnt really my thing and I dont really like how viewers put these people on a pedestal either.
