  • This is the very 1st episode of Rap City from September 1989 that aired every Thursday on Much Music. It started off as a half hour show but eventually ended up becoming an hour sometime in 1990. There was a party at Much Music to celebrate the show becoming 1 hour and I have some footage of that coming soon so be on the look out for that. We start out this debut show with a Hip Hop History segment with Kool DJ Red Alert. Next up is short interview with Eric B. & Rakim backstage at their show in Montreal. After that we get the top 5 records for the week. Next we check out Freaky D in Montreal and the Beat Factory Posse in Sudbury. Finally Public Enemy takes us out with a quick interview about their song Fight The Power..

Used to watch this show religiously back in the day . Would buy all my cassette tapes of hip hop based off of what i saw from this show . Discovered so many legendary groups and rap artists off this show . Too many to name . This show helped put hip hop on the map as far as Canada goes and help put Canadian hip hop on the map as well . Miss those days when the music meant something and was good . Now hip hop is all mumble/trap garbage . This is hip hop history in a nutshell .

Plus MuchMusic's version of Rap City has also got Canada's very own Mayor of this Hip-Hop metropolis of the Great White North as well in VJ Michael Williams!

Not for Hip Hop. Toasting didnt start in Jamaica. It started with black americans in the USA back in the 50s and 60s. Herc learned his DJ skills from Brooklyn DJs from the 60s.
