    Welcome to my channel, Our Tropical Soil, where you can learn how to grow food in the tropics!
    I feel pretty lucky to live in South Florida. Yes, it is true. The sun is strong, the humidity high, and the bugs are relentless. That doesn't mean we can't grow food down here! I would say South Florida climate has the best of both worlds. Our mild winters that only dip into the 40s a couple of times a year allows us to grow tropical plants like bananas, and sugar apples. Our hot and wet summers are unforgiving to common vegetable plants, however, the winters are ideal for them. Our winters are like northerners summers. We can grow vegetables all year long here. In the summer we would plant heat loving species like corn and okra. In the winter we can grow plants like lettuce and cauliflower. Year long fruit production and vegetable harvests? Count me in!
    If you live in Florida then be sure to take advantage of our climate and get growing! You can learn more about growing food in the tropics by subscribing to my channel or checking the links down below. Thank you for watching!

    Good video. So much to look at now. I believe the lettuces are endive the taller one and buttercrunch or Boston the lower one. Buttercrunch is amazing. Cucumbers look really good. I agree that tomatoes need the sun more to really produce and ripen tomatoes. We always grow cherry tomatoes they grow prolific and very tasty. We grow them up a pole and prune it, I highly recommend you try it. The drying leaves are normal sometimes it's just the primary leaves that are done. Strawberries often have irrigation I think they need a lot of water and some organic mulch that's alkaline. You could try making a compost bin just put old plants and leaves in it. Wood chips will definitely produce more acidic soil especially in the first year or so.I would check with what the plant soil requirements are to see if it's compatible with more acidic soil. deep freeze is coming in the Northeast over the next few days so enjoy your weather down there!

      Thank you! I need to figure out for sure what variety the lettuces are. Right now I have been saving seed from the red lettuce and planted some in the ground to see how it does. The cucumbers are dying back a bit and I think it might be the cold days we have had the last week or two. Hopefully they start growing again with the warmth. I planted some cherry tomatoes but I am not sure the variety. I was told they were Cheroke purple tomatoes but I was looking online and all of those are big tomatoes. The ones I saved seeds from were cherry tomatoes. They were very good and were loving our weather. I think the strawberries do have irrigation. It seems that if I let them dry out just little bit they would die. I have 3 right now that seem to be doing good but they get a good amount of shade during the day. There are a lot of u Pick strawberry farms down here I wonder how they do it. I think maybe they plant bareroot plants or cuttings into pots and then plant the pots out. I think that would be best so the plants have a good root system by the time they are put into the ground. I wonder what kind of soil I have. I want to do a pH test. We are enjoying our weather right now. It has been in the low 60s and high 50s. Very nice!

    Great video. So happy to find fellow South Floridians interested in gardening! I was told at one point that raised beds are helpful here because of nematodes that can kill your plants from the roots. I look forward to future videos!

      Thank you for watching! Yes I have had some issues with nematodes but overall it seems that it affects mainly the plants that don't get enough sun. Thank you for the tip!

      Nemotoads thrive in sandy soil. Over time mulched soil turns loamy and nemotoads no longer become a problem. I also recommend planting plants that deter them such as french marigolds and castor beans.

    Melanie, I found your videos just now because I googled Cuban oregano . Last week I planted my first successful cutting ever. I have to ask.. are you single?? :P My name is Xavier, and I am a single man from Rodessa, Louisiana, where I live with my family on our 20 acres. :) I am 24 and also a big fan of gardening, playing music, and enjoying all the good things in life. I haven't had time for gardening projects lately as work is in full blast for me.. I work for myself.. I am welding right now and making good money.. but I am also certified truck driver and pipe fitter.. I think hard work pays off in living better..
    I will be watching and enjoying your videos for ideas.. for when I have time to completely terraform this grassy land into a forest of food..
    Very nice to meet you, and I wish you all the best.

    I think the reason why some of the stuff is not making it is because of the mulch. In my experience some things are Hardy enough to make it and some things aren't. I tried growing torch tithonia and some calendula and the tithonia grew like crazy but the calendula didn't. I think it strangles the stems or something

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 3 lety

      Yeah maybe... The mulch can damage the stems I think if it's too close to it. I love how the mulch looks and it really prevents weed growth but moving tons of wheel barrows around is a lot of work. I have been thinking about how growing annuals with a permanent perennial ground cover like perennial peanut and sunshine mimosa would work. It would prevent weeds from growing but still be short enough to not suffocate the annuals.

    Hello! Thank you for your video. Fellow South Florida gardener here...Where did you find the tomato seeds or plants (the hybrid ones UM developed)? I would love to get some for the upcoming season. I don't get the best harvest from Brandywine or Green Zebra varieties that the UM extension page says should work in our zone, but the cherry tomatoes do great here (for me at least!). Thanks again!

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for watching! I have gotten two hybrids. I got some from seedsforthesouth.com but I just checked and they don't have the ones UF developed anymore but they do have other hybrids. I am looking but I can't find any for sale unfortunately. hos.ifas.ufl.edu/public/kleeweb/newcultivars.html In this link it says if you donate money to their breeding program they will send you packets of different hybrids to try out. Hope this helps :)
