    Welcome to my channel, Our Tropical Soil, where you can learn how to grow food in the tropics!
    South Florida summers are tough on plants that aren't well suited to the sun, humidity, and bugs here! Some plants love the weather while others...not so much. I wanted to experiment this summer and decided to grow a variety of things to see what does well at this time of year. I wanted to share what were my successes and failures to better help all of you plan your summer gardens.

      South Florida has a unique climate when compared to the rest of the continental US. But there are still plenty of unique fruits and veggies to grow in other areas of the country too. Up north many different rare berry varieties can be grown and the veggies tend to do better overall also. If you aren't too far north then you can grow things like figs, persimmons, pomegranates, kiwis and plenty of other fruits. It all just takes a little research to find out what does well in the area.

    You have an amazing South Florida garden. I live in Sarasota FL and started a container garden 2 years ago. I don't have a big yard I live in a mobile home community. I had my first crop of sweet pineapples this week. Nothing like what you buy from the store. I grow mostly herbs in the summer and this summer I moved them from my shade tunnel to under my carport so they would not get over watered during our rainy season they just love it there. I moved my banana peppers and cherry tomatoes into my shade tunnel and they are thriving there. Last summer they did not make it past June and now it's almost August and I'm still getting peppers. I'm growing sweet potatoes, ginger and regular brown potatoes. I have one long eggplant it stopped fruiting but it's healthy. I just got my first dwarf banana plant. I would like to add some of the crops you are growing any suggestions on where to find the seeds for the spinach, long beans or any of the other vegetables you mentioned? Thanks for sharing what's working and what's not.

    I live in S Florida and enjoyed your plant video so much- you have so many varieities I would like to try and some I have never heard of. I have had excellent luck growing Malabar spinach in a bag of dirt on my balcony that only gets a couple of hours of the morning sun. I noticed your soil where the Malabar spinach was had a lot of wood chips on top. If you have a lot of large pieces of wood in the soil, not just on top, I have been told the rotting wood will rob the soil of nitrogen until it is fully composted. I don't know if that is true or not but I have seen videos of people who had beds where they tilled in a lot of raw wood chips and the soil gave them problems until the wood was done composting.
    It would be nice if you could add the names of the different plants you reviewed in your comments so viewers could use them to google more info on them. I subscribed- thanks again.

      Hello, thank you for subscribing and I am glad you enjoyed the video! This post reminds me that I should try to plant some malabar spinach to try to grow in the summer this year! I have heard the about the wood chips also but also am not sure how accurate that is. I try not to bury the wood chips as much as possible but it ends up happening to some extent. I think that section where the malabar spinach was just has really bad soil overall as most things I plant there tend to not do too well. It is a little difficult to see but I add the names of most of the plants I mention in the video. In the bottom left corner where I first mention the plant you can see the name of the popping up for a few seconds. I hope this helps. On my website ourtropicalsoil.com I also have some plant profiles for plants that do well in this climate.

    I have a raised bed garden around the block from me that I fool around with and around Halloween I planted tomatoes peppers and eggplant. The eggplant did not start producing fruit till about a month ago maybe a month-and-a-half ago so you're talkin about a little over 90 days to get anything from those black beauty plants. They grew like crazy right away huge leaves strong stems then I had tons of beautiful purple flowers but no fruit I hand pollinated to nothing. But then I read that the fruit will not set until like 50 to 70 days after you have flowers do just be a little patient and I did add some tomato fertilizer I don't know if that helped but they're both from the nightshade family

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 3 lety

      Yes I had the same issue. I heard about that too. They don't set fruit if it is too hot but if you let it grow, when the temps get a little cooler it will begin to set fruit.

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 4 lety +2

      Thank you! Grass can be a real pain. The best thing to do is to make sure you get all the grass out before planting. Then you must add some form of ground cover in order to stop grass and other weeds from growing. I love using wood chips around the plants but you can use other things like straw and leaves. I have just found wood chips to be the best at preventing weed growth.

    How much gardening space do you have? How much yard space in total?
    I am looking to buy a home with more gardening space and want to know more or less how much I need.

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 4 lety

      I am not exactly sure how much space I have. In total it is around 1 acre but we have just fruit trees planted in most of it. Then the veggie garden area I would say is like 20 by 50 feet. If you are looking to purchase land and can afford it I would ideally purchase 1 acre or more. You can fit a lot of stuff in that amount of space and it won't be cramped. You can put in a greenhouse if you need one and a food forest/orchard along with annual beds. But you don't need that much space to grow a lot. However much you can get is better than nothing. Another thing I want to mention is to make sure the site has a good amount of sunlight. if you get a backyard that is on the northern side of a two story house then you will barely have sunlight.

      I haven't tried that lettuce variety. I have only grown salanova lettuce varieties which is a hybrid lettuce. You can get seeds through johnnyseeds I think. Lettuce does well in the winter but not in the summer. I have tried potatoes but I think in the winter they should do well. Same for the tomatoes, peppers and onions. In South Florida most of the common temperate vegetables can be grown in the winter and in summer you have to grow some of the more heat tolerant tropicals like Everglades tomatoes, okra and sweet potatoes.

      I think you will have better luck in the winter months. Peppers and tomatoes are a bit harder to grow. But if you start with greens and herbs you will likely have better success. Things like cilantro, parsley, dill and basil are very easy to grow. And greens in the brassica family are too. Like bok choi, collards, and kale. Lettuces a bit more delicate.

    what do you do about the insects?

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 4 lety +1

      Not much. When you grow healthy plants in the right time of year then there is likely to be minimal insect damage. For example, my collard greens get a lot of pests in the hotter months so I grow those in colder months instead. Planting them in partial shade helps to stop the pests too. Sometimes the older leaves of the greens have aphids. I soak the greens in water for about 20 minutes and that causes all the aphids to fall off. If it is a fruit that has pests, like guavas, then we bag them and that stops the pest damage.
