    In this video I will share with you how we got free mulch and how we now have no more weeds in our garden.
    Welcome to my channel, Our Tropical Soil, where you can learn more about growing food in the tropics!
    In South Florida the weeds grow like crazy. During the summer months when there is high humidity and constant rainfall it can be a lot of work to keep the garden tidy. I had been wanting to get mulch for some time now, and I finally got a free truck of mulch. Our garden has never looked better. This mulch will prevent weeds and also improve our soil health.
    Thank you for watching! I post up a new video every week, so if you are growing food in the tropics or have a food forest garden then be sure to subscribe to my channel! If you want to learn more you can also check out my blog (ourtropicalsoil.com) and find me on Instagram (@ourtropicalsoil).

      I usually go to my nearest landfill location & pick up christmas tree mulch.

      OnCloudNine62 Yea that’s a good time of year to pick up mulch! I’m sure they have tons then.

    I noticed that many people are starting gardens and CZcams videos that have only gardened for a year ?
    I'd say you will be well versed in 10 years! I have only been gardening for 8 years now!
    My mother said that I had a black not a brown thumb because I KILLED every plant before she died but I can now do exactly what she did, basically throw plants out and it grows!! Lol ....the next door neighbor ask me how I planted ferns native to Florida and I said that I throw it were I want it and it grows!
    She said "I believe that somehow!" Lol

      Ernesto Garcia I hope you get it quick!!! The mulch really helps keep all the weeds down. I am curious. How is your soil? Rocky? Sandy?

    • @ErnestoMiami
      @ErnestoMiami Před 5 lety +1

      @@OurTropicalSoil
      Completely rocky and sandy. So much that to plant fruit trees I have to work hard to make the hole. The top soil is only a few inches. I plant vegetables in raised beds and hydroponic systems ... The soil here is hard and sandy ... Thanks for the prompt response. Regards.

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 5 lety

      That is tough. The mulch won't help much with the rocks but it will help make more top soil! I was watching a video about using mulch to improve soil and the man in the video was saying that sandy soils are much easier to improve through mulching than clay soils. I wish you the best in your gardening!

    Thank you for sharing your garden and use of wood chips. Now that you've put the chips in, what pros and cons have you noticed?

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 2 lety +1

      Wood chips are great for weed suppression. They work very well under fruit trees or larger plants like cranberry hibiscus for example. However, when it comes to small annuals like lettuce, carrots, kale, etc I feel that is is not that efficient. In order to plant into wood chips you have to remove the wood chips from the surface and then dig into the soil below. This becomes an annoying task when planting a lot of small annuals. With small annuals I prefer a mulch that can be planted right into like compost or decomposed wood chips. Decomposed wood chips are very similar to compost.

  • @MasterKenfucius
    @MasterKenfucius Před 5 lety +1

    The best thing to do is find a tree trimming company close to you and let them know you want some. It's best if you can take lots of them so they can keep bringing them. You can also chase down those guys from that company Asplundh that trims trees for Florida Power and Light, especially when they're in your neighborhood. You do want the leaves in between the chips. That makes the very best compost when it breaks down. Wood chips aren't rich in Nitrogen. The green leaves mixed in make up for that. I've already hauled more than 1000 cubic yards of mulch to my backyard and couldn't be happier. I have 1.20 acres and put about 300-500 cubic yards a year on top of the old ones. Bananas trees love it. The soil underneath is looking amazing. I've never seen so many worms everywhere. Keep adding a new layer yearly and your plants will thank you.

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 5 lety

      Ken Tichy Amazing. This is what I hope to also have. Lots of wood chips and then top it off every few years. I have seen the tree trimming companies before. One day I will ask. I’m sure hauling was a lot of work! Do you have any tips for making it easier to do?

    • @MasterKenfucius
      @MasterKenfucius Před 5 lety

      @@OurTropicalSoil I have a 19 HP lawn tractor with a trailer, and that helps a lot. Also, use a pitch-fork with lots of prongs to load it. It really works a lot better than a shovel. Yes, it's a lot of work, but that's all the exercise I get, so it's for a good cause.

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 5 lety

      Ken Tichy A trailer sounds really really useful! The shovel is quite difficult. I wanted to get a pitch fork for moving mulch and turning compost too.

    • @MasterKenfucius
      @MasterKenfucius Před 5 lety

      @@OurTropicalSoil I have two different pitchforks. The one with just 5 prongs and the one with a lot more. The one with fewer prongs is good for stringy mulch, or the type I get from my local landfill. The one with lots of prongs is good for wood chips. I don't know how your compost pile is, but keep that in mind when you buy a pitch fork.

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 5 lety

      Thank you for all the tips! I have seen that there are pitchforks for digging and some for compost. I was thinking of buying a digging one and using it for digging and compost. I know a compost fork would be better for the compost though, but having a pitchfork for digging out roots would be useful.

    Hi. I just found your channel. I love it. I had to subscribe to it, and watch all the older videos. I liked them all. I have a question. When you added the wood chips to the ground. Did you first removed the grass? Or just add it on top of the grass?

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 3 lety +1

      We normally remove the grass first. However, if you lay the wood chips down really thick, like over 1 ft, then you don't really need to remove the grass. Some people lay down cardboard first and then the wood chips like 6 inches thick. That will kill the grass.

  • @samrossispeakssingsfilms2781

    That's a lot of mulch! It does looks clean. I was wondering if the mulch is increasing the acidity level of the soil and how that was affecting your plants good or bad? Thanks.

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 5 lety +1

      Sam Rossi Songwriter I am not too familiar on how mulch affects soil pH. I would thing that adding a diverse mix of organic matter to the soil will
      keep pH in balance. If there is wood, bark, leaves, and even fruit there is a lot of diversity. That is also what I like about these free mulch deliveries. There is a lot of variety in them. Now south Florida soil is overall very very alkaline. So making it more acidic would actually be better. The plants are overall doing great here. The soil drains so fast and will be dry and dusty if left exposed for one day. I dig down and the soil is damp and I find earth worms almost every time.

    • @samrossispeakssingsfilms2781
      @samrossispeakssingsfilms2781 Před 5 lety +1

      @@OurTropicalSoil Yes that makes sense now. It's a very different mindset than gardening in the Northeast. I'm used to breaking down clay, which is nutrient-rich but heavily retains water and therefore can suffocate the plant. Thanks again!

      @@OurTropicalSoil We are limited to 5 months a year and a Long winter wait. During winter some of us watch CZcams videos of those who can grow all year in the south. I grow sunflower and pea shoots microgreens all winter indoors to stay healthy and keep my hands in the soil. Growing microgreens is much more challenging than a garden but it is very rewarding.

    Great video. I'm about to use this place to order wood chips. Are you supposed to use both wood chips and a ground cover plant?

    • @OurTropicalSoil
      @OurTropicalSoil  Před 3 lety

      I haven't really been using ground cover plants but I recommend it. In some areas where I put down wood chips and planted a ground cover I have barely had to reapply the wood chips and there are barely any weeds. The ground cover protects the soil and prevent weeds from going. The wood chips cover the soil in the meantime while the ground cover grows. I have sunshine mimosa and perennial peanut. I am not sure where you are but they are warm weather ground covers. If you live somewhere colder than Florida look into hardy ground covers.

    Las personas que se dedican a podar árboles trituran lo que podan y para deshacerse de eso tienen que pagar ,es por eso que si uno necesita wood chips ellos te lo llevan gratis a tu casa. Eso hacemos nosotros y ya vamos por el cuarto camión.

    • @OurTropicalSoil

      Eso es lo mismo que hicimos :) Mejor coger las cosas gratis que pagar. Adamas hamos cogido un solo camión. En unos mese ordenó otro. ¡Cuatro camiones es bastante! Eso es muy bueno y mejorar tu tierra con el tiempo. También teñimos una máquina chiquita que tritura los palos flaco.
