- On 10 February 2014 the Benedictine nuns of Our Lady of Consolation at Stanbrook Abbey Wass began building the second phase of their monastery. The first phase was completed in May 2009. This slide show describes the days before the first Mass in the new Abbey Church, the actual Mass and the ongoing work the week after this celebration in April and May 2015.
The new stone altar will be dedicated and used for the first time on 6 September 2015 when the Abbey Church is consecrated. This is why a temporary altar was used.
What I love is witness this community of Sisters working together and embracing change and yet being faithful to their Benedictine tradition. It would seem that is what they strive for in the building of their chapel. Thank you for sharing.
Great to see that chapel. Normally I would follow the article in the Catholic universe paper a long time back. I had written letters before. Now I can see you all on video at youtube channel. I am fifty six years old and my son is thirty one years old. The years fly by so quickly.
It's a beautiful abbey for modern use and a lovely community. It has kept the simple tradition of monastic buildings, which I'm sure will serve them well for interior contemplation.
I hope they always keep it so beautifully simple. Catholics have an unfortunate tendency to keep adding things.
As senhoras deviam tomar consciência do sacrilégio que cometeram ao saírem da antiga Abadia de stanbrook. As senhoras tem consciência dos tamanhos sacrilegios cometidos dentro daquele espaço sagrado?
That is a Brutalist auditorium not an Abbey Church They might have taken a cue from
The Benedictines at Regina Laudis in the US
I think it’s horrible, absolutely soulless and doesn’t look like a Monastery at all. The original Stanbrook Abbey was so beautiful. I understand the reasons the Nuns had to move, and this has been designed to provide all the modern, eco friendly facilities, but I find this whole design ghastly, not in keeping with the location either.
It looks antiseptic. But if they really want to live in a gym or theater atmosphere, it's their choice and their money so nobody can stop them.
so sad that everything modern is so utterly dull utilitarian and uninspiring. Compare that Protestant preaching box to the wonderful abbey church you left behind
