- Today we have a 2010 Dodge Charger with an inoperative fuel gauge and DTC P0462 Stored. We dig into the diagnostics and determine the instrument cluster is faulty. We decide to take the instrument cluster apart and found the we could repair it with just a simple solder job. Full disclosure: the hand drawn wiring diagram is just my best guess as to what is going on inside the cluster. If you know what it actually looks like inside, please let us know in the comments.
This setup should be similar on 2005 Dodge Charger, 2006 Dodge Charger, 2007 Dodge Charger, 2008 Dodge Charger, 2009 Dodge Charger, 2010 Dodge Charger, 2005 Dodge Magnum, 2006 Dodge Magnum, 2007 Dodge Magnum, 2008 Dodge Magnum, 2009 Dodge Magnum, 2010 Dodge Magnum, 2005 Chrysler 300, 2006 Chrysler 300, 2007 Chrysler 300, 2008 Chrysler 300, 2009 Chrysler 300, and 2010 Chrysler 300.
scared me with your technical ways. But i sat thru the video and 100% will i be this way from now on . I Didn't think people can be as technical as you on vehicle. thank you for this great example.
Excellent video showing proof of concept. I just had a 2008 charger with the p0462 in the shop. Got to the point of where I was very suspicious of the cluster but the boss stopped me because I already spent an hour on it.
Great diagnostics! Thanks to your skill..this car is off the shop to shop merry go round!
Amazing video. Helped me fix my buddy’s 05 magnum. Super thorough and informative
Awesome, awesome video and you are right, there is a difference between a technician and those back yard mechanics!!!
I literally have this same issue, replaced both my pumps.
Thanks, helpful video🎉half hour and my problem solving.
Charger 2010
Thanks for this video, hopefully I can diagnose and fix my Magnum's gas gauge soon.
** I would like to point out those are capacitors, not resistors, so can't simply read resistance values. Very low resistance indicates a short. Very high resistance (such as you saw) should validate the capacitors are fine (50K seems not high enough, but for a tiny surface-mount cap, then maybe so). Typically need to have the polarity of your leads correct (which wouldn't matter for a resistor)
** regardless, the variance you saw may have revealed the poor connection on one of the pins, which is all that matters.
The caps are probably just to drain any noise picked up by the wires - there must be another trace on the board for that pin that connects it to the chip or computer controlling the fuel gauge. If I can't figure that out, I'm ABSOLUTELY willing to touch up the solder on those pins and see if that fixes it.
To explain - you can read the circuit board labels for each component, where "R03" would mean resistor #3, or "C68" for capacitor #68, etc...
Great info. Thanks for sharing!
Fixing one now
The issue is actually the resistors in the cluster
The resistors are the black parts marked 1001 indicating 1K precision resistors
Mine were cracked between the end cap and resistive film on the resistors
This how it should be you are the best
Thanks for the video. I have a 2008 pursuit that is having similar problems. Both units replaced still only reads half full when tank is full. Then will suddenly drop to nothing and come back after a few minutes. I’m going to follow what you did step by step hopefully that is the problem as well. Keep up the great videos.
I have the exact same problem
I use to pull over to the side of road every 40 mins when driving to where ever I’m head to and I don’t do it anymore. But wow I thought I was the only one with this problem
Did you ever get to fix it?
Did you ever find the fix? I have the same problem!
No I sure did not. I ended up selling it the way it was. Wish I could’ve found the problem was very frustrating.
Put both units in my 07 300C hemi when I fill it up the hand stops at a half tank I tried to calibrate it and it will hit full for a second the fall right back to half any suggestions thanks brother
Would this process apply to p0463 and p0268 scanner says high volt for both. Also what pin is for the FLS ground wire
2 of these 2010s with same issue, last one it would work 95% of the time so just ignored it, this one stuck on 1/2 all the time so will tear into it. vid seemed to show when calibrating temp you had needle set to low side, it sat below lowest and reached just below highest.. other than that nice vid, seen a few of these when had my other 10... your vid had more detail on the rear test procedure the others were mainly the solder work on the gauges.. they said the trace for the board was bad in other vids and they modded a little to make sure it made contact.. I did not save so can't link...
Just bought a 2010 dodge charger with this issue. I noticed it would register a full tank after driving it a while between on an off so leads me to belive its the cluster having issues. Just felt like a little wiggle from the acceleration and stop and goes was all it needed. Luckily Im also getting a 2009 with a bad transmission as a parts car for it. Ill just swap the clusters out and see if that fixes it and troubleshoot the current one as done here and go from there to fix it if this is the issue, this way I still have a spare.
Did switching them make it read better? My 2010 doing the same thing.
@denirobreseman4541 oddly I haven't done this because further looking at the 09 I can drive it. It has the check engine light on, but I haven't used the scanner on it yet. I've been busy working on other vehicles or the house.
Appears the dealer I got the 09 from who just wanted it gone didn't do a diagnostic on it while they had it. $400 and appears to just need work under the hood so far. The oil change I did on it to check the oil out had metal shavings, but so far, it may be worth a full restoration.
Anyone know the part number for that capacitor on c68?
My CHARGER 07 has new pump and new filter (passenger side is NOT a pump but a filter by the way). And since then, my fuel gauge goes half way whenever my tank is full. The only thing is I DONT HAVE ANY DCT FAULT CODE. Does it matter ?
I'd like to follow your tutorial ...but you are not mentioning what hardware you are using (those handheld diagnostic tools). What are they and where to buy please ?
The device you resoldered is a capacitor and is not the problem. The actual problem is caused by a bad solder joint on the big resistor (r323) just below and to the left of pin 1. I suggest resoldering both of those resistors.
السلام عليكم عندي عطل مانع انزلاق ول اي بي اس ما يشتغلن عندي دوج جارجر 2009
That look like the simplest cluster I have ever seen removed in my life
Any mechanics know how to do this in the valley? I'm in mesa
why arent the gauges lines up correctly ? on the temperature and gas gauge? will they self adjust eventually ?
Because they are reading. It had gas in it and some temp left over from driving it earlier. It wasn’t running or moving so speedo and tach started at zero.
What would the part be called to order just the gas gauge for the cluster? I can not find a replacement online
It’s the instrument panel.
can you confirm that this was the actual fix and worked in the long term?. i see no definitive answers here that is was.
I forgot to mark the needles and now they are way off. Help!
You used scan tool to recalibrate gauges, will the factory reset using the odometer reset button and key on do the same thing?
We weren’t doing a calibration. We were just active testing the gauges making sure they worked before we put it back in.
No it won’t I tried that reset and it worked for about 5 minutes and then went straight to empty.
Been trying to solve this problem for awhile. My fuel gauge doesn’t read properly but my shift indicator and odometer also don’t work. Do you think these are all tied together?
Maybe, but this repair wouldn’t fix all of them. It may have multiple issues in the instrument cluster or something else altogether.
@@automotiveinsight yeah such a headache, my problem is just not wanting to throw money replacing parts before I can do a proper diagnosis. I've seen a lot of other people having the same problem with the fuel gauge but cant find anything solid on the shift indicator and odometer lights. whats strange too is the lights would periodically start working when I first got the car but now not at all, makes me think its a faulty connection. I'm going to try what you did and get a reading from the wires connected to the fuel sending unit so I can hopefully rule out the sending unit. not quite sure what I'm doing but I'll follow closely and try to get similar results with a ohm reader so i can pinpoint the problem to the IC.
@@Dewminosame exact thing my car has been doing. Let me know if you solve this
I just bought this and I’m
Having the fuel gauge issue and p0462 code read
Im dealing with the same issue
Merci
Tu as toi aussi une Charger ? J'ai le meme probleme. Tu as reussi a le resoudre ? J'attends ta reponse avec impatience.
Are you saying left is driver and right is passenger side? Im trying to install aftermarket pillar gauges for fuel and need to know what wire to tie into.
Driver left passenger right.
@@automotiveinsight that's what I thought, just making sure. Any idea of where to splice in the signal wire of an aftermarket gauge? I tried 1 & 3 of the fuel pump connector and of course I only get the reading from each side it seems. Driver's side full, pass side empty.
@@christyhopkins78I don’t. But I imagine you would have to isolate them from the cluster. You would also have to find a way to get them to average the sun of their inputs I would guess.
@@automotiveinsight quick question. I'm getting volt readings of 5.8 and 2.7 on the level signals (the 5.8 is in red) is that bad? I know I have got them mixed up when reattaching (the 2 blue/white signal wires) and I've redone them both ways. Does it really matter? 😭
@@christyhopkins78it depends on what the actual fuel levels are. If memory serves, I think that system primarily uses the pump in the left side. When it sees that side getting low, it uses the transfer pump on the right side to move fuel to the left side. So it probably does matter.
Will you get these codes with a common reader?
Yes
Did i miss something!!! How did you determine which resisters on the cluster where the suspects.
On the other side is one of the electrical plugs. We found which pin terminal was going to the fuel sender, then flipped the board around.
Is that thermal paste you put on that what’s the substance
Solder
Are you based in Virginia? I’m fairly certain that the vehicle you’re working on is the exact same vehicle i currently own I bought it from a dealership
No. I just texted the customer and he still has the car.
@@automotiveinsight gotcha alrighty then crazy coincidence same color same lip in the interior about the vents over the radio
So u need a scanner for this how much is it?
I wonder the same. What scanners are needed to accomplish this, where to get them and how much
How much would this cost to fix right away
$300-500
This code just came on for my car do I need to replace fuel pump as well with the fuel filter?
Did you have to reflash the cluster to the cars ecu again… did it lose signal?
You don’t have to do anything since it’s the same cluster that was in it already.
Hi Guys, your video is awesome, I have the same situation with my dodge charge 2008 SXT and just wish you can share your contact such as an email. The car is back in the garage and thats the only problem holding it down from renewing my inspection. It's been there for a week now, the guy is simply lost, is there any way I can reach you guys, I need help please .
Thank you. Honestly, we have more work than we can handle already. But check out www.automotivecircuitsolutions.com I have used them for other problems and they are really good. You just send the cluster out and they fix it for you (assuming that’s your issue), then send it back to you.
