    So I’ve always wanted to make something special for my 100,000 subscriber milestone. I know I haven’t got there yet. But like In Christmas and presents, I can’t wait lol. SO… let’s make this fun, and the subscribers that accurately count how many times I say “so” on the video will be entered in a raffle/ drawing to win a $100 gift card. Hope this doesn’t take away from the content. Just a little thanks to my subscribers that stick in with me. Enjoy

    A good video, and a quick diagnosis. One suggestion I would make, or to respond to your invitation to answer what I would do, is that I would connect to the signal wire back at the tank, and then pull it to ground with a test light and see if the gas gauge goes to full, or close to it. This would verify that the 5 Volts, GND, and signal wires are all good before taking the gas tank down. Then, if it tested good, I would do what you did.
    Again, well done video and diagnostics. Thanks for making it.

  • @spelunkerd
    @spelunkerd Před rokem +6

    I admire the way you guys are able to make diagnoses when it is so difficult to reach the suspect part. The conventional design is to use a simple voltage divider with an upstream fixed resistor hiding inside the PCM. A 5V signal comes through that upstream resistor in series, then follows the sensor wire to the second variable resistor inside the tank. Although they could design it either way, the conventional float wand is as shown here, where higher resistance is seen with an empty tank. That way if the wire breaks, the driver is told the tank is empty, which is better than being falsely reassured it is full. The PCM measures the voltage on the wire between the two resistors, so voltage is high when the resistance of the tank resistor is high, because there is more voltage drop across higher resistance compared to the fixed resistor inside the PCM. Here's a method to prove your upstream wiring is OK. Puncture the sensor wire as you do here, as close to the tank as you can get. Tap a grounded incandescent test light on that wire. Turn the key on and see if tapping the test light on the wire moves the dash gauge. Your test light won't necessarily glow, you're only using it for safety so it is not a direct short to ground, it's a handy 75 ohm resistor. Note that in new cars you may need to erase codes, like you did at the end. If the gauge moves, you've got strong evidence that everything upstream of the puncture is OK.

      Can you use the new style of powered test light for this test

    • @spelunkerd
      @spelunkerd Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@unclecowboy2003 There are rare indications for LED test lights, but most often the best lights are incandescent. Old school incandescent bulbs have lower resistance which means they draw more current and require higher voltage to turn on. By drawing more current, upstream or downstream resistance is easier to detect. Ideally when testing a circuit you want to test at the approximate current level that is normally drawn. So, LED bulbs might be OK for computer testing but for a fuel pump, headlight circuit, etc, you need more current. Most of us keep a headlight bulb in the tool box to drop test circuits that draw about 4 amps.

    My diagnostic computer will give me the fuel gauge voltage sent to the ECU for both the front and rear fuel tanks under the Live Data/Data 1 menu. Interesting that Snap-on does not. No need to back probe. From this Data, I found that the rear tank fuel level sensor was not working correctly. I did not get a code - just ran out of gas when the gauge said 1/2 a tank. BTW - my truck is a 2004 Suburban that uses the exact same instrument panel as the Silverado in your video.

    Is there a way to test the gauge itself if it's older car and there's no way to do it like in the video with computer diagnostic tool? Something "mechanical"? I have this interesting problem with 2004 Daewoo (Chevrolet) Kalos. When I put ignition to ON I can see the fuel gauge to move a tiny little bit (just to say it is not "frozen" at all) and it falls down as well when I remove the key. I removed the fuel pump unit today and measured resistance and I am getting about 400 ohms for "empty" all the way to about 17 ohms for "full". No jumps, nice linear change. What would you suggest to do next? Thanks a lot.

    I have a similar issue with a 2005 mustang gt. It seems to only happen when I’m parked idling the gauge will drop to 0 and the dash will say data error. Then a minute later the gauge will work. Or when I shut the car off and on it will start working. I hear chevron Techron may help if it’s just varnish on the float sensor ? The car still runs fine but I hate having a check engine light on

    My 98 chevy truck has this same error code stored in the PCM and my gas gauge stays on full most of the time. When I come to a stop, it will sometimes go all the way down to empty. I'm sure it needs a new sending unit but I will just wait until I have to replace the fuel pump. I will have to try these tests to see if it's the sending unit for sure.

    Thanks, but for a older vehicle such as my parent's 1997 Monte Carlo LS I have often been told by auto shop mechanics that it isn't worth repairing due to the age of my parent's car: the fuel gauge has been dysfunctional for a very long, long time. I drive the car more than my parents and I do the same as my Father - when the mileage-gauge gets to 250 miles it is time to buy more gas. I wish there was a easier repair option! I was hoping I could find some kind of wireless float that I could toss into the fuel tank and it sends a signal to a USB plug-in receiver in the lighter? What year is the truck? I also have 2005 GMC Sierra 1500.

      It's always worth fixing a car if it's what you're going to keep using/driving. Don't listen to anyone about it not being worth it.
