A neat little detail is how the king smiles at Nuada. As if he accepts his fate of death by his own son's hands. It tells me that while the king disagrees with the path his son has chosen, he's proud that he's grown into a formidable warrior with an unshakable resolve.

I legit was on Nuada's side during this whole movie. He just wants his people to remain in existence and not to be snuffed out like a distant memory. The fact that his father became so damn complacent with the idea of dying out slowly over time one could understand his rage. To watch the society you once defended with your life basically giving up on itself for almost no reason. Even with all of that you can tell he doesn't want to kill his father, but essentially given no choice.

Guillermo del Toro wanted to continue the saga, and he already had the script for a third installment of the movies. But all the studios Guillermo spoke to felt his project was too expensive, and rejected Guillermo's offer. With time, the studios opted for a cheaper reboot. Which sucks since Guillermo's Hellboy movie-verse was great, it was mystically beautiful due to his great use of practical effects and stages on it, and it actually had a story that felt fluent and followed the mythology well since he actually knew, and did what actually matters to have a great film: great direction and purpose. Unlike the new Hellboy reboot which simply threw things to the wall with horror elements here and there, had no sense of mythology, and got filled with action, and a senseless story that satisfied the masses with an IQ lower than a flea. Using CGI could have worked out, but there was no beauty, no mystical mythological feel, and no fluent story that Guillermo del Toro had done on his films.

I'm not sure if the King so much agreed with Nuada as opposed to knowing that he was right, but he still could not bring himself to condone what Nuada wanted to do. At the end, the King could see that his guards could not defeat Nuada, and that his own death was inevitable. As alluded to in their earlier conversation, he knew that his time, and the time of the elves, was over, and he went to his end with dignity, perhaps trying to leave a final example for Nuada.
This is actually a story that's played out countless times before in Earth's history. Untold hundreds, maybe thousands, of species have lived and died and gone extinct when conditions were no longer right for them, or when they got outcompeted by another rival. The philosophy of the elves was that since their end was inevitable, there was no point in shedding blood trying to postpone their extinction. The King would rather die remaining true to the beliefs and ideals of his people, than for them to become like the humans, even if doing so hastened their end. It makes you wonder how we would behave, millions of years in the future, when the Earth is changed enough that it's no longer an ideal home for us. Would we want to remain as we are, or would we try to change ourselves, through methods like cybernetic augmentation or genetic mutation, to the point where we might not even look human anymore, to be able to continue to thrive in a new world?

That's what makes this scene beautiful. He wasn't fighting for his life, but for hers. I think it's the reason when his nose bled, he wiped it clean, spun the swords around balancing himself perfectly at the top of his game to not let a single scratch reflect on his sister. I think that's why the father stood up, smiling, maybe even proud. I strongly believe Nuada was the real protagonist of the movie, and the red monkey club the villains. Comedic plot armor saved "Hellboy" from being utterly destroyed by this ruthlessly efficient warrior, driven by his unconditional love for his sister. THAT would be poetic justice. Not the ending they contrived in the movie.

You know what's interesting about Hellboy's villains? The ones from the original movies that is, they're portrayed as "human" villains. Rasputin and Nuada were not like evil incarnate villains. They were capable of love and they were turned to villainy because of the pain and injustice they suffered. And even after choosing to be evil, they still loved someone (For Rasputin it was Ilsa, for Nuada it was his father and sister) They're villains who you can understand. You don't condone their actions and you know what they're doing is wrong so you root against them but you understand their reasoning for what they did so you sympathize with them. That's very interesting and poetic and it's how a lot of bad people are. I mean yeah there are those who are evil incarnate but then there are those who were lead down the wrong path because of hurt and injustice, and you feel so sad for those people when they fail to get back to the light.
