CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Hades (Ralph Fiennes) comes to Argos and threatens to release the Kraken on its people unless they sacrifice their princess, Andromeda (Alexa Davalos).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The 1981 mythological fantasy adventure Clash of the Titans is resurrected in this remake from Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier. Discovered at sea as an infant by a weary fisherman, demigod Perseus (Sam Worthington) grows up with no real knowledge of his celestial origins until his watchful guardian, Io (Gemma Arterton), informs him that he is the offspring of Zeus (Liam Neeson). When Zeus' brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes) casually wipes out Perseus' family, the grieving son vows to show the gods just what kind of damage humankind can inflict on its creators. Before long, Perseus and a small group of soldiers are venturing out into the desert in order to find a way to stop the Kraken, a terrifying force of nature that an indignant Hades has vowed to unleash upon man should they fail to offer up beloved princess Andromeda (Alexa Davalos) as a sacrifice. Along the way, the soldiers encounter a trio of frightening witches with second sight, contend with Hades' devoted servant Calibos (Jason Flemyng), battle giant scorpions, and come face to face with Medusa (Natalia Vodianova), the dreaded gorgon whose gaze has the power to turn men into stone.

I love how Hades is depicted as a frail, quiet old man as he walks up those stairs, yet his very name instills terror and fear to all who cross his path. I really enjoyed Fienne's portrayal of Hades.
And when he released the kraken he’s somehow very powerful and not really Frail anymore
@@ELEKTRO_Official that’s because he feeds of the mortals torror and death. So the more they feared him and died. The stronger he gets
@@bryces.4204 yeah that’s what I meant
Same. This is one of my favorite interpretations of Hades.
Definitely. He made Hades scary as, well, Hades. 🙂
In actual mythology Hades was one of the nicest Greek gods and one of the fairest. Just because Hades is god of the underworld doesn't automatically mean he's evil
He even let Orpheus bring back his dead wife out of the underworld to the living, with one condition don’t look back until they completely out of the underworld.
That's so true. Hades gets such a bad rap.
While you are not wrong, this is largely a modern interpretation. Fact is, he simply did not appear in enough myths to come off as a jerk. The ancient Greeks were so terrified of him that there were no shrines, no temples, no sacrifices, no prayers, because they knew he was inconsolable. With the other gods you could bargain. Not with Hades. The only myths that feature him also have a hero whose major attribute is the ability to bargain with him (think Orpheus or Hermes) and it is made clear what great feat it is to move Hades to mercy. We only have the stories that depict him in somewhat positive light, because he was otherwise so terrifying to the Greeks that they would not even speak his name. He was instead called by epithets like Plouton "Wealthy One" or Agesandros "He who carries away all men".
In that regard, he was the OG He Who Must Not Be Named, which is kinda fitting, considering who plays him in this movie.
He was fair but he definitely wasn't nice, he just wasn't unnecessarily cruel and didn't outright make the lives of people much more harder unless you did something worth punishing and when Persephone comes to the underworld and brings fall and winter but that was technically because of Demeter and not him
The last two comments are absolutely correct:
Hades isn't evil, he is unwavering; no amount of prayers, no amount of tears, no amount of pleads will persuade him.
"You are specks of dust beneath our fingernails"- what a badass quote.

This scene truly represents ''What is a King to a God''
At this point, making the third film would be difficult, but also quite obligatory. Hades, as yet, hasn't, technically, been punished for his crimes. I would also have expected it, since it had killed Perseus' adoptive family.

Um ... Does it matter who he is? When someone manifests via smoke and ash, then turns into a swirling vortex that sucks up everything in its path, knowing their name is the LAST thing you should worry about.
RIGHT!!! I was so friggin pissed off by her arrogance. I was glad he took her youth
Well, I think I know what they were trying to convey here. You have to understand that in Greek mythology, Hades was the most feared of the gods, specifically because he ruled in the afterlife and he was related to the concepts of decay, death, ground and sacrifice. There were cults that would committ blood sacrifices just to appease him. While he wasn't exactly an evil god, as he was no different in the natural order as the other gods, he was a necessary god to be feared of. I think the film was attempting to show just that hence their reaction when they realize its Hades himself.
Hahahaha, exactly! 😂
Well, people dare to stand against Kronos' army of Makhai. So what I think is, supernatural abilities don't frighten them. But knowing he is the God of the Underworld, what else can you fear more?
Facts lol
"Who are you?"
The disrespect in that woman still went on. Damn. Her face after the God of the underworld spoke his name is one sheer regret.

I consider this one of my favourite scenes of all time. Ralph Fiennes painted a masterpiece here.

Who are u I am Voldemort lol
The way their faces show pure fear when he says his name is 100% correct. In Ancient Greece, Hades was the most feared of all the Gods. They respected all of them, some more than others, but Hades was the one that they feared most
Hades was so feared by the ancient Greeks that there isn't a single image, a single shrine, a single temple, a single votive inscription dedicated to Hades in both ancient Greece and ancient Rome! Not a single one... That's how much the ancient people feared him!
@PastelShake Pylos Ilias.
@@franeasanovic2761 Hades was without a doubt one of the least unpleasant of all the Olympic gods, he was not petty, and he either left the mortals alone or even helped them from time to time... but you know since it was the god of death and greeks were afraid of dying he never got so much praying nor worship...
@@machacasaurius not the god of death but the underworld thanatos was the god of death
When people in the ancient Greece wanted to took a serious oath, they'll stomp their feet several times and call over Hades to hear their words, knowing that if they broke their oath Hades would reclaim them if they failed
If I recall correctly, Hades wasn't exactly a villain in this movie. He decided to betray his fellow gods because they tricked him into ruling the Underworld and he's still bitter about it, and rightfully so. While the gods basked in the prayers of the mortals in their shiny fancy home, Hades got none of that while he is forced to rule and live in such a gloomy and unpleasant place. Seeing how the humans have become arrogant and disrespectful to the gods, he saw this as an opportunity to do his revenge. I like how this issue, the betrayal by his brothers and why he turned bad, was addressed in the sequel movie.
depending on which version, when they were deciding got to rule what place, either zeus and poseidon cheat so hades is stuck with the underworld; hades knew they cheated and took the underworld anyway; or he willingly accepted the underworld as his.
Zeus and other gods feed from the people's prayers and faith to live while Hades forced himself and learned to feed from mortal's fear, and that what makes him strong and lives.
@@ksgdjf8673 Hades doesn't feed from fear. That's Ares, whose sons were Deimos and Phobos (Fear and Terror) themselves, in the battlefield. Ancient Greeks fear Hades but he doesnt feed on their fears.
Der Hades hat aber auch zwei Seiten
I love this scene so much that I have memorized this scene by heart. One of the best scenes in this movie.
I love this scene because it shows that, even if you are a king or queen, you are not superior or special, you´re not different from the rest of the people, you are still a mere human who can grow old and die like everyone.
Brayan Carmona dude go back to class and do bible study, the internet is not the place
@Evyen Biwer I'm cool wit people believing in god, but don't go preachin where it ain't welcome, ya feel me?
@Brayan Carmona God is actually also a mere human concept.
"What is a king to a god?'
The mother looked 100 years old after.😂😂😂
I love how Hades says "Interesting" as he's looking at some bug in his garden that he's never seen before
When the Queen questioned the identity of the god of the underworld, notice how the sound of death echoes over the palace: he doesn't scream, because he doesn't need to. for only when saying that he is Hades did the people present grind their teeth, scream in fear at his speech, as if death came to collect them all.
People often mistake Hades for being the God of Death. No, he is not the God of Death, but the God of the Underworld. Thanatos is the God of Death. Know your greek mythology guys! Your welcome!
Crazy Foodge Also makes me wonder if Thanos got his name from Thanatos. What has Thanos been pushing? The death of half the universe’s population. Coincidence? Probably not.
Hades has the power to control death though, in the first movie, he brought death to the queen, in the second movie, he took death away from Zeus to save him.
Thanatos is technically only one of the gods of death (specifically peaceful/nonviolent death), whereas Makaria was the goddess of blessed death and the Keres were the goddesses of violent death.
Hades may not be the god of death because he rules the underworld which also encompasses the realm of Thanatos and so on, he has power over death. Just like Zeus who is a sky god but can also control things like the very nature of heaven etc.
Hades is the god of death. thanatos is the personification
He serves hades or at least that's what I know

Trust me, when a godly villain tells you who is your father, its the moment when you assimilate a powerful truth.
You still have a doubt?...
Holy shit, Ralph Fiennes seriously has the presence. He tells you to kneel, you better fuckin' kneel!
When Hades said kneel, the rest of the people kneeled as well even though Hades was only talking to the queen.
That shows how much these people fear Hades. He is a force to be reckoned with.
Hell of a performance.
Wasn’t fear that did that if you look at the king there was some sort of force he began feeling until he left
Ahhh pun intented?

Hades is the ruler, the lord, and the god of the Underworld. Everything that isn't Divine will bow to him, eventually.
A king or peasant, a sinner or a saint, a soldier or a general: all shall answer to him.
Well, Hades has a right to be feared. he is the eldest son of Kronos and Rhea as Hestia is the eldest daughter, Hades is also the God of the Underworld, and arguably more powerful than his brother Zeus.
I love how this Hades is how Hades should really have been. An Arbiter. His authority doesn't come from the usual pride Hades supposedly has in popularized versions but from his subservience to order, death being one of the Natural orders, and specifically (2:34) to the Gods (Zeus).
The only thing they did "wrong" was making Hades the villain almost cause in the real mythology he was kind and fair. Almost more than all the other gods
this hades was dope, the one from percy jackson lightning thief was corny imo

Ralph Fiennes nailed his role just like he did for the Voldemort role
I hate it when movies make Hades a bad guy. He rules the underworld, so he gets turned into a version of the devil. It's lazy and it totally misunderstands Greek mythology. The Harryhausen version got it right: mortals were pawns in the squabbles of the gods, but it wasn't about one irredeemably evil god who caused all the trouble.
Glozwell he want being a bad guy here. ...he is bitter gloomy and FAIR
She knows not to insukt the gods...she was being stupid ....an olympian god probably wouldve done worse...like turned her into a damn stick or raped her
This Hades wasn't a "villian" Because of the queens actions, knocking down statues and turning their backs to the gods, even as much as comparing themselves above the gods, they just sought to teach the mortals a lesson.
Did you watch the whole movie? He is not a villain. Antihero, maybe, but not a villain in the least.
No, he's- he's kinda been a villain for a while. Being as he tried to betray the others
This was better than the sequel.

Why is Hades depicted as a ruthless villain in most forms of media? He’s not evil, he’s just doing his job
Christian symbolism infused on everything
He ends up a good guy however.
I would argue that while it's meant for laughes, his portrayal in Hercules was spot on lore wise. Imagine you and your brother both land a job with a huge company, and you both bust your buts at it for a while. However, at one point your brother gets promoted to *the* head position in that company, and he then appoints you the top spot in one of the most disgusting positions within the company. Sure, the job in question is *necessary*, but you're gonna be quite bitter about it in the end. And that's what the dynamic between Hades and Zues was in the mythology. He wasn't necessarily evil, he was just stuck with the shittiest job possible, he can't quit it, and worse yet his brother gets all the fame.

hades is always misrepresented
maybe but if Hollywood wanted to be 100% then they would have Zeus turn into a swan and bang a chick. Sometimes changes for the sake of a good story are better than the original.
Aaron
Well technically he did do that in this movie he flies into a woman's room a s a eagle then transforms into the king then he u know
This is what the Gods did to people that showed hubris, they were all petty like this
@Harpoxy H. no , he didn't cheat her.
Persephone's case was the only tyrant thing he ever did.
He only cheated Persephone ONCE , and only ONCE she cheated him back , way different than his rapist brothers.
After that , he even helped Orpheus and Hercules peacefully.
When Asclepious was ressurecting people , Hades only asked Zeus to stop him , while Zeus simply killed Asclepious.
While Tanthalus , Sisiphus and Axion are rightfully punished for high crimes. Axion for been the first mortal murderer , Tanthalus for killing his sons and use them to feed the gods just to test them and Sisiphus for chaining Thanatos.
In short , Hades is not evil in Greek Myths , out of Chronos' sons , he is the better one.
I known this is late, but I have read the version of where Persephone is dragged into the Underworld, but I have heard of another version of where she wanders into the Underworld willingly.
Wouldn’t blame her on how Demeter (her mother) is.
As for the fruit of the underworld...the story I read is that Persephone absolutely refused to go back to Demeter who was unleashing a never ending winter on Earth wanting her daughter back (during this or before, Demeter turns a young mortal boy into a lizard)
In this version, Persephone was dead set on eating the fruit and Hades was desperately trying to stop/convince her to go back.
"Name's Hades, Lord of the Dead. Hi, how're you doing?"
The way he says:
"I am Hadessss"
Is Ominous , a well delivered line
0:54 oh so when he says that, it’s cool but when I walk into a room saying that, I’m dramatic.
Not dramatic. If you say that you're edgy
dude rolled in hard af...I absolutely love him as Hades
He's not accurate to the myths. In the myths Hades is one of the nicest Greek gods and the fairest. People automatically assume that Hades is evil just cuz he's a god of the underworld when that's the opposite.
@@lightknight6749 Same with the Hindu goddess Kali, she's the goddess of destruction and looks like a demon but actually is a fierce protective mother to all.
@@Rattus-Norvegicus that's awesome! I don't know much about the hindu gods so it's nice to hear more about them
@@lightknight6749 Yeah I've just been reading into it recently and the mythology is fantastic. She fought a demon whose blood, when it hit the ground, would grow into full size versions of him. She killed him by cutting off his head and drinking all the blood. She went into a murderous rage killing all the other demons until they were all dead but didn't stop and started killing innocent people. Shiva her husband threw himself on the ground and she stepped on him before she came to and realized what she had done. In most of her images she is pictured standing on him with her tongue out. It's pretty fascinating stuff.
Say what you will about this movie, but Hades had an incredible entrance!
0:41 the music, the godly feel, that BELL sound. Superv
Hades: "Argos has 10 days until the Kraken is unleashed unto it's destruction!!!...."

@@mouthopenmonkey4571 "that Spartan" that I Jokingly, say Perseus knows about is the one and only GrecoRoman Deity-killer, "Ghost of Sparta" ... KRATOS
(cue: Epic God of War opening Title music)
I love how he just appears and then the first thing he does when he gets in their face, is insults them.
The chilling echo of his voice when he said "I am Hades" whew

Maleficent curse = WHEN THE SUN SETS ON HER 16TH BIRTHDAY, SHE WILL....

Mortal Queen- Who are you?
Hades- It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
0:56 - You cannot deny he went straight into voldermort mode with that lil tilt
Finally, he you-know-who got his hair and nose back
idc what anyone says, this scene is one of the best scenes that was ever created!
Queen Cassiopeia: Who are you?
Hades: I’m Hades, Lord of the Dead. How you doing?
Just to let you know that I used the Hades quote from the Disney version .
