I love this scene - one of my favs. That quote is so powerful, only Anthony Hopkins could pull off a scene like that. I actually shrieked when Thor called Oden an old man and a fool. And Loki was like “aaaaaaaah…” Second awesome scene was in the café, when Jane challenged Thor for smashing the coffee cup . The look Thor gave Jane …. He clearly wasn’t accustomed to being told “no.” And that’s the moment he began to respect Jane.

3:13 I love that moment of hesitation from Odin as if he's considering whether or not he should go through with his decision. It's ambiguous at the time the film came out, but after Ragnarok, I like to interpret it as Odin remebering what Hela became when her ambition was left unchecked and thus Odin decides to go through with exiling Thor in hopes he'll learn humility and the value of life rather than follow in his sister's footsteps.

    • @jackhutton5078
      @jackhutton5078 Před 6 měsíci +53

I love that when you watch ragnarok you get this little call back and it makes it clear that in this moment Odin fears Thor will become another Hela
I feel that his moments hesitation isn’t because he is considering Hela and realising what he needs to do.
I think he’d made up his mind the moment thor started mouthing off.
No, I think that hesitation is him thinking and trying to figure out where he went wrong.
I also think it’s why he wanted to kill Loki in Dark World and had to be talked down by frigga.
He blames himself for his children’s failings and feels that he has to punish them as harshly as possible because to him, if he doesn’t, he’s failing them again. He clearly loves all of his children but he knows he can’t let them get away with this shit, so over does it on the punishment so it doesn’t look like he’s showing favouritism.
By the time it got to Loki he’s just realised he doesn’t know what he’s doing wrong or how to change.
The sad thing is, from everything we see he is as a decent parent.
Not perfect, but there are worse parents out there.
At the end of the day, he is not responsible for his children’s choices, they are.
And at the end of the day, all three of his children were assholes at some point. And two of them got better.

      @jackhutton5078 Před 5 měsíci +20

@@ptboxingagenda4536the way I see it is that Hela probably started off like Thor.
Remember, Thor was all for war, he went to Jotunheim LOOKING for a fight, seeking out war, revelling in bloodlust just like Hela did.
Loki wasn’t a narcissist at this point, he wanted approval, he killed is biological dad to try and impress Odin, they both were looking for war and conflict here but Thor wanted people to fear him like they feared Odin, and Loki wanted Odin to see him as worthy and figured that since he always favored Thor, that was the way to go.
The issue with all three of his children that I can tell is they all wanted to emulate their old man, but took his WORST qualities to emulate.
Hela wanted to emulate his bloodlust and violent nature.
Thor wanted to emulate the fear he inspired.
And Loki wanted to emulate his ruthlessness and cunning.
      And all fell short.
The old god was more powerful than them all right to the end.
There’s a reason Thanos didn’t do shit until after Odin kicked the bucket.
Fun fact: Odin’s old for a reason.

Those of us who are older were spoiled years ago, there were so many great actors at once. Stage actors, guys who were a little mad in their roles. Only now in this age of mediocrity can we appreciate them, imagine if the buffoon of a director of Thor Love and Thunder had casted one of his comic friends to play the role instead?

@@Parasmunt Yeah I would agree with that, but I wouldn't call it necessarily and 'age of mediocrity', there are plenty of fantastic actors in today's world I just think it's always easy to naturally take things for granted, in any and all aspects of life. I live by the sea and it means nothing to me. I work in a hotel and everyday I hear something about how beautiful it is. And yet I've not noticed it for a long time. I think he's one of those actors who often comes across as the same character, but he really shines when he's allowed to go all-out and put some emotion into the performance. I wish they'd give him more roles like this, but modern cinema tends to be understated. I mean he'll make you flinch through the screen all throughout this scene.

The first two Thor movies didn't get as good reception as others at the time. Many found Thor one-dimensional, bland and boring. @@justlivinglife5609 I like that revisionist history that Waititi fans have to to pull off, pretending like Thor 1 wasn't the first successful MCU solo film outside of IM movies and wasn't integral to The Avengers. If anything, Cap before TWS was the character people didn't have care for. With Ragnajoke and Dumb and Thunder, Thor didn't receive any personality. He was turned into every boring goofball stock MCU character, who forgot everything he learned, and started to talk like he's on SNL That's not ''personality''; that's character assassination. There was nothing serious or emotion about Waititi's piss-poor comedies; they were emotionless, shallow cacophonies of bad humor and nonsense. Also, Dumb and Thunder is now on its way to becoming a modern day equivalent of Batman and Robin. So clearly making Thor into a comedian didn't pay off; it made everything worse and there is no going back.

The moment Odin comes in Laufey approaches him immediately to talk diplomacy and rules of war and Laufey doesn’t attack Odin until he accepts his declaration of war. Laufey almost seems worried about Odin saying he looks stressed, but basically tells Odin that even if Laufey didn’t want to go to war he basically has too because Thors actions was an act of war.

In human years he is 1500. In Asgardian terms he is just 20. And Loki is 16. Seventeen in the first Avengers.
Thor is a god, who made the human mistake of taking the wrong step when he was this close to victory, but not there yet.
Loki spend all of his life hearing about monsters called frost giants, trying to prove himself over his brother whose shadow he had been living under and his father always favoured, but couldn't understand why. Then he found out that he is one of those monsters, and in his father's eyes he was a tool for peace, that he could never accomplish the one simple thing he had always and with any right wanted: to be Thor's equal.
Odin though, did something only for one of these problems.

That noise Odin makes to Loki when Loki tries to interject is Anthony Hopkins just making an unscripted noise that says "Stay the fuck out of this" and Loki backing away is Tom Hiddleston being genuinely taken aback

There’s so much I love about this entire scene. Laufey’s voice, the way Thor realizes that he messes up as soon as “you are a fool” left his mouth, the way Odin snarls at Loki, everything.

One of the most underrated scenes in the Marvel cinematic collection. Anthony Hopkins gave the first 20 minutes of this film gravity.

The snarl of Odin was improvised.
Anthony Hopkins really did make Tom Hiddleston almost shit himself.

I found Thor to be fairly entertaining as a whole, but this scene shows how much of a Master Anthony Hopkins can be. He completely controls this scene.
Thor thinks his father a coward and an old man, and Odin responds with such force that he reduces a previously arrogant Thor to a whimpering ten year-old. Just look at the mix of fear and dIsbelief on Thor’s face when Odin comes down on him.
I could only imagine the silence and awe on-set the day that Hopkins filmed this scene. The true greats tend to get that reaction from their audience, whether it be in-person or on-screen.
