      @dannyt7269 it's a steroid for acne. Steroids speed up the way the body works. Some of them (not sure about this one) increase the Blood Glucose of a person. So I would think it * may * be contraindicated in some people with PCOS.

    Just remember girls, there are different types of PCOS. Mine is Adrenal. Most doctors aren't even aware of the types and will simply put it under the umbrella of PCOS without distinction. This is valuable knowledge to have! Thank you Doctor Dray for covering this. It's something a lot of women deal with yet is one of the most brushed off conditions to have. Most doctors have no idea what this world for women even entails and will simply offer birth control as an only source of help. It can be debilitating for most. I don't get how doctors can be so quick to work miracles for trans men to be more feminine yet when us women want to just feel like a woman and need help, especially with hirsutism, it's considered cosmetic. I'm so over it. 😒

    I also developed type 2 diabetes after PCOS. I am so very insulin resistant. I believe it’s from exposure to lots of chemicals growing up. A doctor told me that. My mom used to put those RAID bombs at night for roaches. It’ll get in my throat and I would cough so bad and throw up. She used them about 2 to 3 times. As long as my sugars are very very tightly controlled my periods are normal. But if my sugars are slightly elevated I spot 3-4 days before my period comes. In order to be tightly controlled I either fast a lot throughout the day which means I’m starving, or B. I’m on a high dose of metformin and I could eat.

    Birth control pills worked wonders on clearing up my acne. I am fortunate because I tolerate them very well and now they are helping mask perimenopause symptoms. I am fortunate in that I was able to control my PCOS through diet and exercise for a long time. My PCOS and acne started showing up again after 10 years of no medication when I hit early perimenopause. I fast 11 hours a night and eat a balanced diet (weight watchers winning points circa 2002) which does include carbs and exercise, all which helped me a lot. The wonky weight issues are not a joke. I was obese for most of my 20s; the combination of blood sugar swings and the body's propensity for weight gain made it extraordinarily difficult to lose weight. Took me 6 years of tracking everything to lose 50 lbs, then things got a lot better. PCOS is really hard for a young woman to deal with because it takes a toll on her experience as a woman. The body hair and acne and excess weight... it's hard for young women. I'm glad we are learning more about how to manage it better.

    i’d encourage women who suspect they struggle with pcos but haven’t had luck addressing it with their gynecologist to seek out an endocrinologist who specializes in pcos.
    in addition to what dr. dray mentioned i would emphasize weight loss and lifestyle changes. these have profound effects on the hormonal function even though they might not seem to be obviously related.
    managing pcos in the long run is similar to a skin care routine in that it requires dedication and consistency.

    Hello Dr. Dray. I have an interesting idea for a video based on an experiment I have been doing this last week:
    So last week I bought one of those "$100" UV cameras off amazon to see how well I was removing sunscreen in the evening (not the SPF level). It does a great job. I tested Purito oil cleanser followed by a water based cream cleanser, CeraVe hydrating/foaming oil cleanser, La Roche Posay water based cleanser, Vanicream, etc. Long story short: It's amazing even after a double cleanse how much of the Korean chemical sunscreens are left and show up on the UV camera. Since they absorb into the skin, I expected there to still be a "dark area" on the UV camera, but even three days later and after multiple washes, I was surprised by how long Korean sunscreens last (and these are not water resistant ones either). I had applied these sunscreens to my forearm for testing. The physical sunscreens removed much easier. I tested Elta MD UV Restore, Isntree Watery Sun Gel, and Anua Heartleaf chemical sunscreen. It kind of makes me wonder if the "absorbed" portions of the chemical sunscreens could potentially cause breakouts or if has no real impact at all and perhaps the only portion being removed by cleansing is any residue left on the skin surface. I much prefer Korean chemical sunscreens. Regards- Brett

    • @tiahnarodriguez3809
      @tiahnarodriguez3809 Před 7 měsíci +2

      Reading your experience with physical sunscreen washing off better than chemical sunscreen doesn’t surprise me, but I’m curious if the left over chemical sunscreen has the same effect as applying a fresh layer? If so, that’s pretty cool that chemical filters are that potent.

      @db-gb5xi Před 7 měsíci +1

      Pretty sure I've seen a few skincare channels like Lab Muffin, dermangelo, Scott Walter MD and others saying to put the UV cameras down.

    • @b.z.7618
      @b.z.7618 Před 7 měsíci +3

      @db-gb5xi Yes but they were talking about testing the effectiveness of SPF (as in if one is putting enough sunscreen on to get the recommended SPF levels on their face), they were NOT talking about the removal of sunscreen. Those are two very different issues and the point of my experiment was to see how much sunscreen was left over after cleansing with different products. I have yet to see anyone discussing what I was testing about sunscreen removal. Regardless, you would be shocked as to how much chemical sunscreen is left in/on the skin after a double cleanse. Whether the absorbed chemicals are an issue in terms of breakouts or not, I do not know. I much prefer chemical sunscreens as I have a beard, but I also like the idea of removing all of the sunscreen when I am done cleansing and for that, physical sunscreens do remove better based on my UV camera tests. Chalk it up to too much time on my hands and curiosity lol. I suppose the ultimate goal of mine was to see how much it takes to get the skin clean of SPF, while at the same time not over drying the skin. I do not use the UV camera to asses the SPF levels of sunscreen as I just put two fingers worth of SPF on my face. Regards- Brett

    It's interesting that none of the patients taking Myo-Inositol reported side effects because most of the forums I've read of people taking it report digestive side effects like nausea and diarrhea. Dizziness seems to be quite common too. I have emetophobia (fear of vomiting) so this supplement is likely off the table for me until I can work past my phobia (which I'm working on with a therapist). Birth control and spiro are off the table as well. I have had decent luck getting my cycle to be more regular with vitamin D supplementation (I had a diagnosed deficiency and I test regularly to ensure my levels aren't getting too high), it's not perfect but much more regular than it was before I started Vitamin D. I just wish that I could figure out a good solution for the hirsutism because I feel so gross with all my chin hairs.

I have had several supplements and multivitamins and especially antibiotics make me throw up when I take them on an empty stomach or when I’m nervous. Inositol causes me zero upset stomach no matter if I ate or my stomach is empty. If that helps!

    Thank you for this info! I have PCOS and Hashimoto's syndrome. I am nearing the end of being able to cover my pattern hair loss (even with hair powder) and may have to consider wearing a wig within the next year or so. I started using Rosemary oil (with pumpkin seed oil) on my scalp and went back to eating meat and taking supplements and vitamins like Multi, vitamin D, iron (I was anemic for a long time). I understand there are far worse side effects than hair loss (I've been relatively lucky and haven't had any acne) but being a woman it is emotionally frustrating to deal with. Spirnlactone was suggested to me but I am avoiding it due to the potential side effects. I have Myo-Inositol at home and just haven't dove in to using it yet. This might be enough consider starting.

    I do not have PCOS but I have severe periods that are incredibly painful. I have IBD which can make them more painful. Anyway, I read about inositol last year and it has been super helpful for the pain and heaviness. I honestly got used to wearing Depends diapers due to the flow and mess my period was like. Just easier than washing my underwear, pajamas and sheets daily. It has to be taken daily in order to work. I tried to take a break to see if it did anything and my period was actually more severe than before so the bounce back of not taking is hell. I take 1/2 -1 tsp daily (on the higher side close to my period). It’s a tasteless powder I put in my tea. I take it in the morning because it disrupts my sleep taking it later on.

    The root cause of PCOS is chronic hyperglycemia.
    Chronic hyperglycemia causes two health conditions that spawn all other PCOS symptoms:
    1) Elevated systemic glycation
    2) Chronic hyperinsulinemia
    The hormone imbalances you mentioned are not the cause of PCOS, but are merely symptoms of chronic hyperglycemia.
    If you fix the blood sugar problem, you fix everything else
    This is why cery-low-carb diets are so effective at treating PCOS.
    When you significantly reduce carb intake, your blood sugar management basically goes on auto pilot and remains normal and steady.
    This allows your body to come out of survival mode, and begin healing.
    Don't treat the symptoms like hornone imbalance, etc. Treat the root cause which is chronic elevated blood sugar.

Now I take different brand inositol 3g it works but not as great, I would say 80%. Also you may get bloating and lose stools, especially with prolonged usage. I do struggle with that when using inositol, when I stop taking it acne comes back.

    KUDOS DR DRAY for sharing this information 👏👏👏
    For me, it’s too late as I’ve been in menopause and my puberty was in the 60s before you were born.
    I suffered from so much hirsutism and acne and doctors didn’t know about PCOS then. So it was decades of electrolysis and waxing etc. at least I didn’t have alopecia but later I also suffered from fibroids and the only treatment I could get was a uterine embolization. The effect of those fibroids was terrible anemia during my periods.
    QUESTION, is there a connection between PCOS and fibroids? Would myocarditis-inositol help? Anything for menopause?
    Thanks for all you do. ❣️

      This is the best explanation of causes I've seen. Many of the "experts" make it sound like it's caused by insulin resistance, implying it's our fault. There is actually a high percentage of women with PCOS who have eating disorders because they are being shamed. It's really complex. We need clarity and compassion, not blame. By the way, even thin women with PCOS can have the metabolic issues, including diabetes.
