When Max Verstappen first joined Toro Rosso, one of the very few people who defended him was Fernando Alonso. He pointed out that it should be skill that determines who gets an F1 seat, not age. And looking at this footage, well, he practices what he preaches. Still doing the most incredible moves age 42.
Yes delusional guys be thinking Alonso is too old for F1, but I think he has chance of winning world Championship title in 2026 or 2027, if Aston Martin learns to make faster cars, when I heard, that Newey will move to Aston Martin in 2026 and it might be a game changer.
and then max went on to cause at least 10 collisions each for the next 4 seasons. yes he was fast, but he constantly crashed into his competitors early on and still will when he doesn't have a rocketship
There are still people who say that with his age he should not continue in F1... his reflexes and his ability to react only improve, he always does something that makes us doubt whether he is human or not. Grande Magic, siempre en tu barco!!
Anyone who thinks age should matter when someone is OVER performing is stupid. He's driving a 9th-12th place car into the top 5 consistently. At this point anyone who talks shit about Alonso has to go squarely into the hater category.
anyone that says anything about age is blabbering nonsense. as long as someone has pace for teams to want them over a young guy purely on merit its all fair and square. the complaint makes no sense when we have a handful of rubbish drivers in the sport.
He is a legend, clearly above his record. I remember those years in Ferrari, he spent several years fighting for the world championship until the last race of the championship against an almighty Red Bull that was between 2 and even 3 seconds faster per lap, he is a magician behind the wheel, bravo Fernando, you are number one.
The save was amazing, but what really got my attention is he managed to still have the presence of mind to activate DRS so quickly after a massive save like that
I fully believe he was expecting it. At a certain point you have so much experience you almost know when you are gonna oversteer going through a corner, so you start preparing mentally even before the oversteer has happened because you just know it's gonna happen. That cuts down your reaction massively because it's not like you are actually reacting to the oversteer: you are "feeling" in your mind the time until oversteer, adjust your countdown with feedback from your senses of orientation, spatial awareness, and knowledge of the track, and then you correct oversteer as the countdown gets to zero and you actually go into oversteer. You didn't reacted, the move was already on motion in your mind before the oversteer even happened. For us, regular sim racers, we have to actively think "oh i will oversteer here, i better prepare"; for them, it's straight up instinctual, no time to think at those speeds.
@@josepedrogaleanogomez4870agree. I believe in the middle of that last corner (or even before it), he knew he'll went wide and prepare for the counter steer. A few cm wider, we can't see it on tv, but the driver got much more information and experience for such things. Great save anyhow!
He's a 2x WDC and has long been highly regarded as one of the best drivers at wringing the most from a mediocre car. Also a master of wet conditions, and mentally tough. Even into his 40s he's one of the best drivers on the grid.
I absolutely love this man. He has a lot of moments like this through his career. Bahrain 2013, I believe, he drove 3 or 4 full laps with DRS Open due to a failure. And Silverstone 2013? he had a rear puncture going 320km/h+ and cached the car from spinning and limped it to the pits. And many others I can`t recall at the moment. Legend.
I remember one at Malaysia for Ferrari where he had a gearbox problem, it sounded terrible from the onboard camera and he was still faster than Massa in the other Ferrari.
Even if he felt that it's gonna be bumpy and expected the slide, the reaction time and the rapid movement is just incredible. He didn't overshot the counter steering and even flipped the DRS right away. Pure masterclass skill and experience.
I noticed the lack of delay in activating DRS when watching live. It was honestly more impressive to me than the save - to make an amazing save like that and still be so zoned in for DRS timing is incredible. There was no “Holy shit that was close” hesitation - just immediately onto the next move.
It's not just the quickness when counteracting the oversteer, it's also how quickly he put the steering back to normal, hit the gas and DRS. I think he went into the corner at .3s behind Hamilton, despite this massive oversteer and counteaction, he ended up within .6s of Hamilton and managed to chase him down for an overtake using DRS. Superhuman.
Besides the the still blisteringly quick reflexes I think what saved him the most was the upshift he performed a split second after he felt the back slide out.Brilliant awareness and technique. He reminded me of the time when Jacques Villeneuve tried to go around a chicane, in Canada and on a wet track, but the car would not turn and aqua planed straight for the barrier.Everyone thought he was done for but he somehow manipulated his brake, accelerator and steering with such a degree of finesse that he almost immediately regained control of his car and continued racing.I have and always will be a Scumacher fan but when seeing race craft like this and in all racing categories,it just makes me admire all the drivers capable of these feats even more.Absolutely amazing.
Not only had his ultra instinct been activated at that moment, but he also didn't waste time making that correction, in fact, he overtook Hamilton on that same lap. 42 years and the guy is still running like the devil himself.

Not only he saved the situation with the steering wheel, but also amazes me the way he reduces throttle to about 35% and then "double taps" it to control the car, all this while already moving his finger towards the DRS button. All drivers have amazing reflexes, but Alonso's reflexes AND talent are on another level.

Pressing the DRS button in time is only the final part of what is so impressive here. Before he pressed it, he had to feel the traction and decide that he's stable enough again to sacrifice his rear aero for DRS and to ram the throttle. Unbelievable.
this wasnt reaction tho, as a driver you have things like drs lines planned out, and the moment he saw he was heading for the gravel, he knew he would have to correct oversteer, its just his amazing ability to predict whats about to happen and act accordingly
In addition in gravel rev is going sky high he lift off the gas pedal correct the car and continue. He already sensed car is going to snap big time because of the revs and prepared for himself. 1.22-23. Not every driver can feel the car this level.

Pressing the DRS button in time is only the final part of what is so impressive here. Before he pressed it, he had to feel the traction and decide that he's stable enough again to sacrifice his rear aero for DRS and to ram the throttle. Unbelievable.
Legend!
