      IZZYMX5 you want to hear me?? You're the first! Seriously, noted. But I think it depends on what medium you hear it, with headphones it seems ok, maybe on mobile or with smaller speakers it doesn't work as well. I'll try it

      I'm watching on a laptop with external speakers, but when you do make a video with speaking, its better to have either music or speaking, not both :) If it happens to have both, reduce the music to much lower volume, so we can hear what you're about to say :)
      thats all :)
      I love your videos, make them better with some proper audio/video set up, at least a better exernal mic. go pro will be OK, but maybe not so cheap though

    996 4S has one of the best looking Porsche rear ends. It's very overlooked car and great ride. 993 however is in my opinion the pinnacle of the 911. Not performance wise of course, but how it mixed the old and new elements of 911 perfectly. It still has the feeling of the old but was much improved over the G-models and 964. And it's the best looking Porsche ever made. Great review!

    the steering feeling differences are more related to the fact tha one is a C4 and the other a C2. I owned a 996 C2 and is a light steering happy car if you push it hard as well (C4 are too boring). both cars are great and all 911 are great. but the best one is the one you own. drive it. :)

    This 996 feels more planted and secure than this 993 mainly because you're comparing C4 with C2. Any C4 will feel like that compared to their C2 equivalent, especially when comparing to an older generation.

    Great review! Having owned many 911's over the years including a cab 993 and two 996's I think your comparison was spot on. I've always used the analogy that as they have progressed over the years they have become more refined and luxurious, but losing the 'rawness' that the earlier cars had that makes your hair stand on end. Having said that I'd probably choose the 996 as a daily driver but would definitely choose Tony's 993 for the adrenaline rush on a Sunday blast or LeMans trip with my mates!
    Give me the simplicity of an even older air cooled every time..... er, except when it's raining or freezing cold. So if you live in the UK and you're a Porsche enthusiast.... you need two. (One kettle and one Meccano set)😂
    Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to seeing the #27 TV show in due course.

      I have a 996 GT3 and is a very nice car and amazing compared to other modern cars. The problem is that Porsche post 993 started to produce bigger body cars that were heavier and were not in the spirit of the Porsche sports car.

    • @Audidude
      @Audidude Před 6 lety +3

      As I replied above the 996 is actually lighter than the 993, is faster and handles better - this makes it LESS of a sports car?. The styling is totally 911, and if the 996 isn't a sports car, neither is the 993. For me the most classic shape is actually the 964, which I'd have before a 993 in a heartbeat.

  • @christophergavin9188
    @christophergavin9188 Před 7 lety +1

    Nice film again Jack.
    Car-wise I reckon they'd both be great mile-muncher cross-continent cars, with the 993 retaining the classic air-cooled feel and sound. The 996 C4S looks to be a great car. I'd be a bit worried with the weight/power mix as the engine is no more powerful than the standard C2. But as a fast cruiser with a hit of fun in the corners it looks great. Will it fit in my garage, though?
    On the audio issue, yes, the music is too high in the mix. As an option, I would start with music, then fade it away as the test begins, but you can use it to punctuate little montages of imagery. But overall a little too high.
    Overall, I do like your films. Looking forward to the 3 964s, as I know you had some help with the filming...

    996 would be my choice. It is a better car but I prefer the C2 it's a bit lighter has slightly better steering feel, is slightly faster and is easier to kick the back end out in.
    The C4S does look better with the wide body but I like rear wheel drive for my fun cars.
    If I was going to buy an air cooled car it would be a 964, I prefer the way they look to the 993; to me the 964 is what a classic 911 looks like.

    • @Audidude
      @Audidude Před 6 lety +1

      Almost. Yes the 993 is more raw, more direct, and more lively - and connects the driver closer to the action. But it's also more likely to send you into the bushes at the side of the road, as it doesn't handle as well and when unbalanced, harder to control. But that, for many, is part of the joy of the older cars.

    I've had both (and still have the 4S) and can say the 4S is a far superior car to the 993. It's got a much higher limit and you don't get the feeling that the back of the car is going to throw you into the hedge. It's very planted, even in very fast corners. This is unsurprising as it has the turbo running gear. It's also much quicker, almost everywhere. I love the 4S and will only change it once I get a turbo.

Porsche built in understeer compared to the air cooled versions which is safer but, not as fun. If you consider fun spinning around mid corner that is. All in all the 996 is a better car but not if you want nostalgia or increasing resale values. Thanks for the vid.

    Another awesome video, I never did get all the hate for the 996! Absolutely excellent cars and they're what introduced me to the brand. My dad had a 996 C4S back in the day, which he replaced with a 996 Turbo X50 and we both preferred the C4S!
    I'll have to show off this picture again (I do every chance I get): thumbsnap.com/27RLdicW - This was in the C4S. My dad won the Cannonball Run 8000 twice, once in the 996 in 2004 and again in 2007 in an SL55 AMG. Considering the average speed, the MPG is rather remarkable!

However, I would prefer to take the 993 on a long run (which I did to Hockenheim) as the car has standard suspension. I have a 996c2 and it darts around I don't know if it has a problem or supposed to feel like that? So would have been better to compare a 996 c2 and 993 c2 as that's a true comparison, a c4 is much more boring!!

    • @Number27
      @Number27  Před 7 lety +2

      Yep! BUT.. this C4S is actually heavier than the standard C2 993..1350 vs 1470kgs. This is due to the extra weight of the wide body and 4wd transmission. But the feeling of bulk in the corners was more due to the standard suspension in the C4S I think

    • @beauchamphuberville1355
      @beauchamphuberville1355 Před 7 lety +1

      Ah - I missed that...There would also be a bit less rear weight bias because of the ruling gear I guess. My C2 you can defo feel the arse.
      You should take mine out - it's bit special!

    • @BraddersCat7
      @BraddersCat7 Před 7 lety +3

      My 996 C2 only weighs 1320Kg. I was surprised at that. Even weighs less than a 964(RS excluded). A lot of people reckon the equivalent the 996 is around 10% quicker than the 993. Both great cars but in different ways.

      The 996.1 C2, 6-speed, coupe weighs 2900 lbs. Options make a big difference in 996 weight and driving feel: Tiptronic (automatic) adds 121 lbs, 4 wheel drive adds 120lbs, and Cabriolet adds 150 lbs -- so a Tiptronic/4wd/Cab weighs nearly 400 lbs more than a 6-speed/2wd/Coupe and they drive like very different cars. Not sure about the differences in base weight for the 996.2 (versus 996.1), but the wide body on this C4S does add some weight and the 4wd adds about 120 lbs..

    A fun comparison of two nice cars. The 996 was the 3.6 face-lifted model which - for me - is far superior to the original 3.4 so it wasn't perhaps a direct father/son comparison.

    993 All the time! Looks better, you get more fun out of driving the car, feels better and has a better engine. 996 is only an option if you want a everyday 911, but if that is the case, I would go for the 997 and never 996. Also, don't forget all 996 IMS bearing failure problems....

    • @veeco3110

      I say let people think the 996’s are ticking time bombs (which they’re not), so people like me can afford one.. I’ve also driven 993’s and love them too, but I’ll take my ‘04’ 996 every time. I just prefer the more modern feel. I rather like the headlights on the 996.2 cars, and think these cars will be much more appreciated in the future, as they are something special to own 😎

    • @jdolger6634
      @jdolger6634 Před 5 lety

      Having owned or extensively driven various variants of the 993, 996 and 997, I agree that the 993 is the best looking of the bunch. It does, however, make a less practical daily driver, and a 996 or 997 is far better suited to that task. Just a fact check on the IMS: 2005-2008 997 generation has an IMS bearing similar to the one in the 996, which can fail catastrophically (albeit at a historically lower rate than in the 996). However, beginning in MY 2009 (997.2) the motor was revised with direct fuel injection thereby solving the IMS issue. So do be careful about implying that the IMS is only a 996 issue.

      Maxx, have you owned or even ever driven a 996? People may disagree about the styling and cabin appointments, but the 996 is probably the single best sports car bargain in the world at the moment and aside from the IMS issue, which is a relatively easy fix, it's an immensely reliable car. I was the second owner of a 996 C4S which I purchased with 10,000 miles. I owned it for 5 years, put an additional 70,000 miles on the car and sold it for nearly what I paid for it. Total cost of maintenance and repairs over that period was only $12,000. Pretty stunning value for "low quality trash".
