    About me:
    Hi, I'm Harry, and I'm intensely passionate about personality typing and self-development - so much so that I have created my own Jung-inspired system, taking a more high-resolution look at the factors making up personality.
    Through Cognitive Personality Theory I examine the underlying mechanisms behind cognition, and the means through which a single type can have limitless individual variation - I believe type itself is just a set of cognitive predispositions that can according to the needs of the situation be overcome.
    I don't believe any type is limited in what they can achieve, but have noticed sensationalist attitudes and internet trends propagating a culture in which type-development is actively discouraged in favour of conforming to simplistic archetypes. Through CPT I hope to dispel various myths and oversimplifications of what constitutes personality type, and along the way encourage a healthier attitude towards type that allows a person to become not who they are told they are, but rather who they want to be.

    Well, maybe we can say that a "type" is not a static box - it's an itinerary, a moving map, a compass for the journey towards the Self, and beyond. The goal is the same for everyone (and that goal is itself moving), types just represent alternative routes / sets of directions.

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  Pƙed 4 lety +5

      It would depend what type means to you, I suppose. If type were to refer to very real differences in neurological makeup I would use such a map to track the development of neural pathways; if type were to be of a more metaphorical nature amalgamating cognition with identities and values then type codes could perhaps be divided and rendered dynamic>static :)

    My friend, I’m an INTP that was raised by an INFJ, and as a result, mistyped as INFJ for most of the time I was doing personality research. The only reason this was able to happen was because of my constant usage/consideration of Fe.
    My default state alone is much more who I am (Ti>Si>Ni>Fi), but just add some people and I’m using my extremely well practiced Fe. (Ne>Fe>Te>Se)

    Excellent as always, Harry! :) I feel that I've seen "cognitive type" relate very directly to the Jungian concept of Circumambulation in each individual, and I believe this process directs the "natural limits" of each individual's perception of reality (that is, each individual can only perceive and interact with so much; it is finite)

    Harry, great video! So far, every one of the series is great. You hit so many great points.
    INTJ here, and I just started pushing myself to develop my Se. I'm a manufacturing engineer who specializes in control systems, so I haven't needed to deal with mechanical issues professionally.
    At almost 47 I'm getting into 3D printing using a DIY printer to force myself to work in the physical world. I started this 3 years ago and had to set it aside for a year, because it took so much more time and energy than I expected only to fail a lot.
    In that time I moved on to another, more mechanical hobby. I thought maybe I could do what I do with Ni, and use skills and lessons I learned between the two hobbies, but I feel frustrated and nervous that I've broken something costly and it's my own fault all the time with both hobbies.
    I haven't had any critical failures that were unrecoverable, so far. But I always tend to overtighten the wrong part, or under tighten the right one, and each failure is just as blind-siding as the last. Maybe it'll get better after another three years, but I think it's just me.
    I still love the hobbies. Very personally rewarding.

    Hey Harry, since your way of looking at MBTI seems to align more with mine, it's cool to see we both think we can experiment with employing a function that isn't the strongest. Since I'm an INTJ (according to your video and the MBTI tests), I have been trying to use the Fe function much more in the last *several years* since I started getting into this stuff. Why? I'm terribly unexpressive and really struggle with group dynamics or having conversations about emotions/conflicts, feeling connected to people, ect. Almost any psych therapy will suggest that expressing yourself steadily over time and in the moment is better than a sudden explosion of emotions too late to even remember the original conflict at hand, which is how I used to be when I'm angry from repressing anger. Being so subtle or robotic that others can't read you at all creates a disconnect with people that hurts relationships and falsely creates that "cold persona" Intjs are stereotyped as. I don't think the Fe function is any more "natural" for me per se, but easier to click into, easier to the understand the purpose of, and definitely has improved my relationships with everyone. It feels very much like training a muscle at the gym that was completely atrophied rather than a change of processing or personality.

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  Pƙed 3 lety +2

      Yes that gradual dipping into Fe sounds like the healthy way to go about its introductions! Said persona's certainly aren't reflective of the true cognition.
      This sounds fantastic and I thank you for sharing this! I also use the muscle-exercise analogy when envisioning the training of a function - congrats on how far you've so far come!

    I propose that we experiment by trying to achieve a "null axis" personality. Consider this: When we have equal preference for two opposing functions, not only the letter (T/F) changes at the 50% point, but the orientation (i, e) changes also. How would this "zero crossing" personality manifest if it occurred for all four functions? Is is something to aspire to? Would it indicate equal aptitude with every function and orientation? Or would it yield an uncertain, non-actualized personality?

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  Pƙed 3 lety +1

      I like it! I would describe that as more of a 'fluid axis' only in the sense that two opposites can operate in tandem, but not simultaneously. Unification of opposites in the psyche is always something to aspire to :)
      I see functions as a system of levers and switches - an individuated psyche can access them all equally, but must switch between different modalities of thought.

      @synthinvasion Pƙed 3 lety

      @@synthinvasion A Ti-like Fi would be equally countered by an Fe-like Te, so I would imagine the person would (despite being unusual) have a similar cognition to another - the convergence/divergence split will remain the same. I think the default state is retained as a lens by which lower valued functions will be perceived to a degree, regardless of how much more accessible those functions become. I also think type is not entirely genetic as it’s a strange dichotomy in some ways. I think some tendencies are largely genetic, i.e. sensory vs intuitive dominance being the biggest example. I don’t think genetics influence the stack as precisely, though, as early developmental factors of personality. I could see fi-ti swapping dependent upon early life experiences, as well as te-fe. I could, however, not see an fe dominant being an fi dominant under differing early life experiences. The dichotomy is certainly hard to read past behavioral speculation which is normally enough, but for it’s subject matter (relatively deep insight of fairly abstract factors of personality), I find it difficult to KNOW a type or see types as concrete in every way.

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  Pƙed 4 lety +1

      I also consider it relative to what people are seeking to convey by functions in the first place. I am certainly curious, however, if cognitive type can truly change in formative years. Looking at the personality research on seperated twins, for example, there seems to be a consistent pre-determined sense of personality, though it would certainly be interesting to see how much that pertains to a cognitive function paradigm!

    Consider this written weeks later: Let’s draw a line between language acquisition and function acquisition, since both are process related. And look at bilingual people those cases where even one would dream in the learnt the language not the mother tongue. The object of such acquisition is highly changeable and controlled by the tool, since we already all have all the eight set of cognitive functions what one should change is not how to use one but the object and frequency. An hour spent Ni-ing might as well be used reading. Just hours ago I questioned that anyone would ever use CZcams comments to do a study! Now you good sir proved the possibility against this Te decision to avoid YT comments studies.
    ------------- as for my experience with the lockdown and Se, it’s as u said, a plant of appreciation has grown. It’s not all empowering tho, you see, this is the second time I’m writing this, the quality has dropped from my preferred style of talking to favoured new accepted conversers (reads: you). Exactly bc Se and Si reminded me that with longer texts something happens; someone startles me or the text getting deleted because of the phone's undoing function, so I tried copying the text and by doing so the chances of the text disappearing for a misplaced tap, this or that has also increased. There is no true empowerment but change.
    ------------
    More on the Sx side, I’ve tried taking up excise but my lung condition proved it difficult. There is also an undergoing experiment with birds, I trust birds to know so Se-likely (ofc in air) not to bump into me, and thus I’m practicing to not react to random birds flying around me going out. The experiment is going well, 2/2 birds have been proved trust-worthy; one flew in such a narrow place with more ppl around and tho was headed towards me, it succeeded. Studying Fx are also a good game for now; with a scheduled Fe exposure when the look is up, to finalise some Ni-Fe sort of theories; one being of how effective can objectivity work in the mess of subjectivity hovering over art philosophies and viewers reactions.

      I don't know exactly because I have the same type and the same issue. I asked the same question in the discussion.
      I have to investigate both of them more.
      I am not easily hurt either. It occured many times that people witnessed situations when I was supposed to defend myself and didn't, which made them think I was a bit of an idiot or weak. It looked like it hurt their ego more than mine ! I came to seriously wonder if I should defend myself on their behalf, since that seemed so unsettling.
      Then I thought "no : some people work hard to be able to get to that state. Of course there may be no wisdom to it since it's sort of innate but still...".
      The thing is, sometimes it makes some people behave very badly because they want to know how far they can go. With time, it establishes a dynamic which is very difficult to reverse. So I need to see the red flags in order to not let it happen because of course, there comes a day when I "wake up", stop making excuses for others or believe it will change in a magic way. No, it is not because someone has a bad day or a succession of bad days that they are allowed to pick on me. Period.
      That for the Fi. But I noticed, maybe I'm wrong because I could always approach people's feelings with the more cognitive side of empathy, and is a good thing because it keeps one from confusing empathy with their own emotions and project them onto people, which is, to me, the opposite of empathy. But. It was and sometimes still is incomplete because if you only use Fe and Ti, you will think people make dramas about a lot of things, which's reality only exists "in their heads".
      So I think to be truly able to use Fe, one also has to work on Fi to be able to relate and rely on it. And - but I'm not there yet, I think it increases your potential.
      PS : I'm not easily hurt but I do have panic attacks, sometimes. And they are very painful. I think it may have to do with my "repressed" or "suppressed" Fi.
      You ask for hints. You know how we ENTPs "work". Give it more intellectual investigation, it will sieve through at some point. Don't try to feel too hard ;)
      If I say wrong things, please someone correct me 🙏

      PS - I would like to add, I do not only want to understand it but also to benefit from it. One can't just "decide" not to use a possibility or a limb or to make a piece of music without a single D (except for experimennting, and maybe it has been done, and maybe the result is fine but most of the time, you'll want to be able to choose :) )

      I'm slowly getting used to it! Yes it's possible they are more unconscious (but nonetheless still potent) within your psyche :)

      @@CognitivePersonality I gave it more investigation and maybe I'm starting to get it, at least partially and also maybe I'm a little bit further than I thought.
      For the physical part. I can go hours, sometimes, not even rarely, without eating a whole day. I never really got accustomed to fixed eating hours. I often tell my boyfriend "don't wait for me to be hungry otherwise you can starve in the meantime".
      I can also go a whole day without having to go to the toilet, when people notice I joke and say I'm a camel, don't worry.
      Also, I don't feel pain very much. I often find bruises and scratches on my body without knowing how I got them. I must bump very hard into something to ache, otherwise I will also joke and say "the door's not hurt".
      Once, I twisted my ankle. I was crawling up a river's bench to take a picture and I slipped.
      In the evening, I went to a party with a friend and my son.
      It was my son's first party, he got a little drunk (safely because I was there) and quite excited.
      He asked me to dance. I said I'm really not supposed to, can't be good for my ankle". But he insisted and I was glad. It didn't hurt very much and I forgot the pain very soon.
      When I got home, my ankle was very swollen, like an elephant foot. I thought ok, I deserved it but I was surprised and scared because at that stage, I felt NO PAIN AT ALL !
      So I asked someone to drive me to the ER and explained very calmly what was wrong, that I felt no pain and thought that was weird because a twisted ankle was supposed to hurt very much.
      The male nurse said he hesitated on waking up the doctor. It was 4 A.M.
      The doctor came, very angry, telling me I'd better have a good reason to have him woken up.
      I said I was sorry but I thought I had. That I wanted to be sure the oedema wasn't caused by anything else.
      He was awful. He sent me home without further ado.
      I didn't understand his attitude (I could understand that he was angry to be awoken for "nothing" but thought that was also part of the job). I mean, how many people go to E.R. with a panic attack ? And I was very calm so there wasn't even any trouble in that manner. No need to treat me like that.
      The next day, I went to my GP and she said "you have an incredibly high pain threshold".
      Of course that is pleasing somehow but.... That's not the end of the story 😀
      The next couple of weeks, I noticed that a part of my foot was numb. It lasted several months. She said there had probably been some sort of nerve damage and prescribed vit. B12.
      I could live with that, no problem.
      Actually, that had not much to do with my ability to stand pain. The nerve had just been squeezed so hard that the whole area was asleep 😂
      Yet, I enjoy good food. So I think I have progressed with some Si at least. I've also become more aware of how I dress, hold my back straight ju-jitsu helped a lot).

    My Ne and Fe is almost the same. Why? I'm 55, so I do not think i can reprogram my functions.

      You could be an ESFJ or ENTP. I'm still absorbing the convergent/divergent order of the functions, but those two types in particular are known to engage with the general social atmosphere a lot with the feeling-intuitive dynamic.

      For instance in the bible it talks of different men being cut from different cloth or when it talks about strange fruit i am pretty sure they are talking about moral fiber this is just an example but more and more each day we see some have vast amounts of moral fiber and some who do not seem to have any at all

      I guess what i am asking is instead of being nature over nurture or nuture over nature could it be that our nature determines what we nurture?

      It's a constant cycle in this respect; one informs the other :) In some senses, the nurture of our forebear determines our nature!

      I still wonder as many parents never come to grips with a childs rebellion or even understand the cause and at the same it could be said about the children in these instances where they never understand the parents i understand what my sister said when she was talking about the things we pick up in our first few formulative years but i dont think it explains how extreme the shift between parent and child can be and yes i mean even from the childs side at a very early age for some where they never adopt the same ideals or principles as anyone around them could we all be cut from such different cloth and not know it?
