What an amazing guest. Have loved this guy for years. Such a brilliant mind
Same!
I've been deeply inspired by Derren for many years, he is one of the reasons I qualified as a hypnotherapist.
I saw derren brown last year for the 6th time and met him lots of times before. So down to earth and fantastic stage shows. These interviews are getting better and better love this channel steven a real inspiration to me too!
any chance of getting brian cox on one day please, love these interviews. great work!
I always comment on these videos when DB is properly interviewed because he actually did change my life. Back in 2000 I was at university doing a Japanese degree and was struggling - at this time internet was still in its infancy and DB was just up and coming. I managed to find the contact details for his agent and emailed, explaining I was struggling to learn all the Japanese Kanji and could Derren (via his agent) suggest any strategies. Although I wasn't expecting a reply I got one - with a load of strategies and book recommendations. Fast forward to now and I'm a Consultant in the NHS with three undergrad degrees, two masters, and in the middle of a clinical doctorate. Genuinely don't think I would have had the skills to do that without the little email he sent, and I'm absolutely certain he won't even remember. For that he'll always be one of my heroes
That’s such an amazing story !
That's wonderful 😊 Well done for what you have achieved
Well done, which books did he suggest?
What a wonderful story.
Thank you for sharing.
@@ImmortalExplorer The two main ones I used and therefore only remember consisted of "You can have an amazing memory" by Dominic O'Brien (great as an audiobook if you drive a lot) and the main one was "Your Memory" by Kenneth Higbee. Bearing in mind this was 20 years ago (welp) the systems used are pretty well known now and I daresay there are more modern texts that perhaps lend themselves better to our current modern life. I think what they gave me - apart from obvious stuff like memory palaces and loci mnemonics etc - was that they forced me to come up with connections to things I wanted to remember (for example to remember that a liver function was around the transamination of amino acids I thought of a Transformer (that old kids toy) drinking a protein shake while taking a med school class) and the ability to make connections is something that has impacted other areas of life, and I personally believe that's the secret sauce these books give: the ability to think abstractly and come up with connections I would have otherwise not have thought of. That's for me, obviously - different people are very different. 🙂
I'm a mental health recovery worker. And speaking from conversations I've had with people, short, dated goals are massively important. However, to echo what Derren has said, we focus on goals that we, and we alone are in control of. As an example, rather than "by the end of spring I will have a job" we say "by June, I will have applied for 5 jobs". Ultimately, someone else decides whether we get the job or not, but we control our actions that impact on our chances of success.
Truly great advice
@@millennialbuddhism2619 maybe the fbi can ask him for help for the poor and oppression of the modern hierarchy of needs.

@@millennialbuddhism2619 of course it is, you’ll never be able to sell crutches to people without first breaking their legs; that is quite obvious I’d of thought.
On a supposedly less obvious track, is it possible to sell Hugo Boss T-shirts to citizens for £400, without first telling them their of no value as humans; ikewise why do women shop on the high street for products named after their children, their families, or themselves (consciously, or unconsciously)? Can one buy loving care, respect & regard? I’d be interested to know if a persons nature is natural or nurtured.
That's bullshit and bad for everyone.💯💨

O yes , very strong but no need to use it to hurt , use it for love of ALL
Ahhhh I've been wanting you to interview Derren Brown for SOOOO long, I saw his most recent show in December and what he does is truly mind-blowing, and he is so transparent about it. What an intelligent man! ❤🙏
me too best in the game
Transparent? Lol. He tells the audience he's reading body language and microexpressions and using subliminal suggestion and a ton of other such nonsense. That's not transparency; that is LYING! Mentalism uses NONE of those things. It's not real! Sorry! It's just not! For some reason, people really want to believe that Derren has these special skills that simply don't exist! They're tricks. They work every time, BECAUSE they are tricks. When Derren says he's "reading" people or planting ideas in someone's mind, it's no different to if an illusionis were to say that they are actually cutting a woman in half, and using magic to put her back together again. Nope. They are using a gimmicked box they didn't even design themselves. Derren is using gimmicks too. And it's not stuff he designed. It's the same old stuff mentalists have been doing since day one! He's being very dishonest and quite harmful though, by making these claims about his methods. It's a shame, because he has great hands and is a very good card magician. What he does on stage on on the TV shows, takes no skill whatsoever. It's all a dead cert from the get-go. He's a fantastic showman, but part of your mind will never be free until you can accept that everything he says about his methods, is just part of the patter. It's a lie. You could be shown how the trick works, and it would work for you too, 100% of the time.
When he gets one stranger to read the mind of another, what's the trick? Genuinely want to know!!
How do they do it? When they have someone pick say a color, a number, a word and a picture, how do they have the result prepared? For example I recently watched kid on AGT do an act where he was wearing an outfit under his suit that matched the colors that the judges each picked.@@ashscott6068
I think what I most like about Derren Brown is his openess and honesty. This is apparent in his performances - he tricks our minds whilst telling us that is what he is doing. He is completely unguarded in this interview and I love him for that. His live entertainments are life-affirming, he is an exceptional human being. I also appreciate this interviewer's peaceful and relaxed pace, giving his subject room to think without distraction. I hadn't seen this channel before. I will subscribe.
Yes, amazing that he tells people what he will do then still does it. I thought the episode where he made the young man feel grateful about life was amazing as was the one where the guy gained consciousness, in Morocco. I can’t imagine how freaked out I’d be if that happened to me 😮
Grew up watching Derren and seen his show in Glasgow a short while ago, he dedicated the show to his late father and the message at the end was "Don't just sleep walk through life", basically don't just accept your fate because one day you will regret it... the message deeply resonated with me as I had to be reminded of it at the time and even still now. Derren is a great showman and he has entertained us all for many years and I'm sure that he will continue to do so for many years to come.
You don't always have a choice in life ......trauma etc.
@@estherlane7498 I understand but you still can choose, don't give away your power.
i was sheltered by my family and feelng a bit lost becaus of it so I understand the phrase sleepwalking through life
I love how even DB can't put a finger on exactly what he does. A true enigma, and certainly the most charismatic and magnetic showman I ever saw. Great pod.
Hes putting on an act. Hes hardly gonna reveal how he does what he does….otherwise everyone would be doing it
Mentalism!
He actually does reveal an awful lot in his early "magic" books with regards to NLP and hypnotism etc.
@@njones420 Listen i like him and i seen him live before its some act....but thats what it is, an act... very impressive none the less
Really is. I am always surprised by the contrast between him in interviews and him in shows.
@@njones420 Yes. He outright states that NLP is bullshit. And it is. Didn't stop him pretending to use it. His tricks are tricks, not skills. You could take anyone off the street, explain the trick to them, and they could do it. Mentalism is no different to stage illusiions, except for the fact that mentalists are often happy to dishonestly suggest to the audience that they're using shite like subliminal suggestion, NLP, etc and reading micro-expressions and body language, and all that garbage.
They are not. Derren is not. They all use the same methods. Stooges (though they all lie about it to the audience), spotters and discrete signalling, gimmicked equipment, etc
Hell, most of the audience conveniently forget that they ordered online weeks before the show, and now the "mentalist" has a bunch of email and social media accounts, and knows which seats they belong to.
Deerren even tells a story in an early book - I forget which - about a time when a gimmicked dice fell apart and the electronics fell out, so hee ejust put it back inside, and the dumbass he was doing the trick for believed it was a psychological misdirection.
Lol. People are so invested in believing that he has these special skills (Which he doesn't, because they don't exist) they they actually get angry at you for telling them the truth. Even though they can go read Derren's books themselves, and have their whole fantasy destroyed.
He put his "mentalism" nonsense together at the last minute, when Channel 4 planned a one-off magic show with a different magician, and that fell apart for whatever reason.
What a great interview. Derren is possibly my favourite 'celebrity'. I always learn something from everything of his that I watch or read. He would 100% be on my dream dinner party list.
It’s a weird thing to do to constantly curate your ideal dinner table but derren always has a seat at mine too.
@mathewfield7671 Same. He seems like wonderful conversation.
A friend of mine watched Derren live, the next day he said that it changed him, he was saying things like it had changed his perspective of things, my friend was fine, but yeh definitely opened up a part of his consciousness. Great guest Steven.
Saw Derren perform live in our home town of plymouth..he blew me away, ive never been able to explain what he did that evening but I remember I was awake all night with the absoulute wonder of it .

I have seen him live two times he blew me away on both occasions.I believe he uses various techniques to do what he does.He is an expert at reading body language working off small tells we all give off in situations which are heightened by feeling uncomfortable when participating as audience members on stage with him.He also is an expert at manipulating situations/conversations by using slight language cues such as repeating him self and using visual cues such as slight head nods when interacting with you to control the situation so that the outcome is favourable to him. He also uses some light hypnosis live on stage to make you more open to his techniques. I say all this because he used me on stage once and it felt like it was an outer body experience it seemed like he was in control of the situation and I was sort of watching what was happening from a 3rd person vantage point. It was all very strange and I felt very euphoric for some time afterwards.
What a treat! Massive thanks to you and the team for pulling this out the bag 🙏🏽 Fantastic questions as always, you coax out the authenticity in the conversation. I've been in awe of Derren Brown since mind control but it's so nice to see him as a genuinely nice and normal guy
Derren comes across really well. Very honest and humble. From what I see here, he's a lovely guy. People like him deserve huge success.
Agreed and you could also be describing Steven 🙂
I listen and take in every word derren says, he’s just so comforting, calming and relatable. Love it x
I have always been a fan of Derren Brown and have fond memories of watching his shows on tv when I was younger. Last year, I had the opportunity to see him live in Birmingham and it was an incredible experience. I even had the chance to go on stage with him. His show made me really step back and think outside the box. I listen to your channel regularly and wanted to express my appreciation for the impact it has had on my life.
Since the age of 13, I have struggled with mental health issues. I was scared of the world and couldn't even go outside to the shops. Over the years, I have experienced both good and bad things that have helped me grow, but it wasn't until recently that I was able to break free from the grip of my mental health struggles. In the last year, my confidence has grown, some times I struggle to belive I am the same person when I look back. However a part of me still felt stuck and I found myself slipping back into old habits and thoughts. I became tired of working for others and being a people-pleaser. Since discovering your channel a month ago, I have started a business with a friend and have learned to say no to people. Your interviews with others and your own words have helped me take the leap to truly live and enjoy my life. My mindset is now (at 26) much more positive and I am learning to see everything in life, both the good and the bad, as opportunities to learn.Thank you for making these podcasts and videos. They are truly inspiring and motivating.
Wow what an amazing reply congratulation on your success and the amazing changes that are happening in your life.
I've seen 2 of his shows and I found his show Miracle really changed my approach to life. I was in tears at the end and the show still hung around my mind months later.
Awesome testimony, thank you 🙏 for sharing 🕊️🤗
Derren, your books and tv shows were a pivotal influence when I was young. Thank you for existing ❤
Awesome interview. Derren is such an amazing human being! One of the all time greats, thank you Steven.
Loved Derren's stuff since way back in the day of the first TV shows. I also grew up quite secluded and enjoyed my own company and certainly love and value the ability to enjoy complete silence and seclusion as an adult, something the vast majority of people seem to really struggle with, I thrive in it. Good to know it's a 'thing' shared by others.
Darren Brown is such a boss. Surprised he is not more well known, he really exposes the reality of how the mind works, and how people are so easily manipulated…
Yeah he’s great. Truly has something of nobility about him. Tirelessly honest, self-critical, loving, empathetic and intelligent.
Love the bloke 😊
Yeah, I'm American and discovered him in 2010, and that only happened because I stumbled onto his Mind Trick videos on CZcams. He wasn't broadcast here.

@@leehasty. this comment reminds me how frustrated i was when derren was on rogan. big fan of both of them, but having been obsessed for many years with watching everything derren ever made over and over and showing everyone who'd listen, was quite annoying to see how little rogan actually knew about him when he had him on, to the point where i was quite curious how he wound up on there in the first place if it wasn't rogan being super interested in his stuff that was the reason behind the invite

so it’s how we respond to life which makes all the difference. Being optimistic lightens us naturally and can maintain a sense of happiness. The longer we become mastered at this then helps when the shit flys and we need a calm centre to work from. It’s our story after all. Language and communication are key. One of my biggest inspirations for helping my mental health, love his shows and books, fantastic interview
One of the best interviews I have seen you take.. Derren is amazing, and always thought of him as being other-worldly, based on his TV shows (never read any of his books). But all the way through this conversation, I got a feeling that he was truly invested in your opinions (by way of his little prompts, a noise if any, that he wanted to hear your side of the story, as much as you wanted to hear his).
Definitely one I'll come back to again and again.
His books are great, would definitely recommend reading them:)

Derren is a gem that is so underrated. Thanks for properly interviewing him.
I love his shows, because of the craft he has; but indeed also because of him educating, because of him letting the audience think. The show leaves you thinking about not only the tricks, but also hints of philosophical questions. Things that matter. It touches. And that's why he has been able to be doing this for such a long while.
Whenever someone asks about pyramid schemes, I recommed "horse races"; or whenever someone wants to get an intro on placebo, I recommend "fear & faith". And tons of other content he made debunking things. This man truly made "magic shows" interesting again, and keeps them interesting, because it isn't about the magic trick in the end. It's about life & people.

❤❤ I love DB. Bought his book tricks of the mind, was so curious I learnt hypnosis. It transformed my mind. I went from a negative thinker, to a positive one. It also helped me to bring my kids up as free thinkers. Thank you so much for this podcast.
curious how you went about learning, and if you've got some golden advice that a new dad could learn from
Did you learn hypnosis solely from his book or did you take lessons or look through all the documents…?
Thanks
@@alexBaldman hi Alex. Congrats on your new baby. Hope you manage to get some sleep. The hypnotherapy just happened really. I was looking for a new class and a lady was running self hypnosis classes. She could see I was really into it and gave me details on the course she did. Surprisingly it wasn’t too far away. So, I did the course , had great fun. Sadly the guy who taught it is no longer with us. Everything you need these days is on the internet. I can recommend listening to hypnosis for relaxation .
@@BeesWaxMinder Hi, I went on a self hypnosis course a lady was running locally , loved it and she gave me details on the course she did for hypnotherapy , surprisingly it wasn’t too far away. Did a two week course, had great fun. Sadly the guy who ran the courses is no longer with us. There is loads on the internet now. I can recommend listening to hypnosis for relaxation or confidence or anything really.
@@Hypnowally thanks!
If anyone gives any courses away on CZcams, I will definitely find them. I hope.
I was lucky enough to get called up on stage by Derren at his showmam tour ( that's life). Was a great night for me my mum and son. Derren invited us back stage after for photos and signed a badge for my son. Wish id asked for advice with my drug situation at the time. Was caught up enjoying the moment totally slipped my mind. Will definitely go to another live show was a class evening
So, Derren inadvertently helped you with your drug situation! It slipped your mind because you were distracted by something else that had real meaning for you and your family in the moment.
Just for future knowledge, entertainers are not a good source of advice for mental or physical health. Remember that even though he seems secure with his philosophy, he's still a magician, not a mental health professional.
I do hope you are doing well.
You've said you would like to know which guests we prefer. Open guests would be my answer. People interested in knowing themselves and then allowing themselves to be vulnerable enough to share that journey with myself and others, so that I might better know myself.
Your research and palpable interest in actively listening have made every video I've watched a joy. Thankyou.
Wow. What an incredible interviewer. Derren changed my life. I'd go into detail but I doubt anyone would read this. Thank you for this, and thank you Derren.
Omg omg omg, so exciting!! Love this guy!
Been a fan of Derren since his first TV show. He is brilliant
27:50 -- "oh gawd, fuckin hell" --the best response ever to a mention of 'The Secret'
What a lovely kind humble man Derren Brown. Loved his show in London 2023 especially about his Dad ❤
