- Doctor Who actor Christopher Eccleston gave a panel at Awesome Con 2023 to talk about his experiences on the show, his career, and to answer fan questions.
Christopher Eccleston played the 9th Doctor in the 2005 series, often referred to as the beginning of “New Who.” While he elected to leave after the first season, his time as the Doctor was memorable and gave us some of the best episodes of the series. He is also known for his roles in 28 Days Later, Heroes, Thor: The Dark World, Shallow Grave, Safe House, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Gone in 60 Seconds, The Others, Lennon Naked, and many more.
This panel was recorded on June 17th, 2023, and moderated by Tony Kim.

“Rose is my Rose”
I love that, nearing 20 years later, he still knows what 9 was going through. THAT is dedication.
What does what Nine was going through have to do with Rose?
@@Anti-HyperSlutRose was the first companion the Doctor had after the Time War and all that trauma. She helped him recover mentally and become the Doctor we all know and love again.
He and billy piper have a militant solid friendship xD they have since the show! its weird isn't it that each doctor has their "companions" and they often become really good mates in real life! Catharine Tate and david tennent are good mates as well! It's said that they INSTANTLY just clicked on the first day of shooting but i imagine they're both just really easy to talk to! they're both very humble in person as well! Especially Catharine Tate, Saw her once in a shopping centre and walked passed her saying "what a fucking liberty" she said "WHAT A LOAD OF OLD SHIT" in response! made my fucking week
Let's be honest, he says that because it's the only other line that isn't "I don't know any of the other companions, I don't watch the show"
@@SabsWhyThoCame here to say exactly this.
I just love how honest he is. No filter, tells is how it is. How it should be.
It's his honest perspective but that doesnt mean he's always right. In a lot of ways Eccleston is undiplomatic. So many Doctors have returned over the years. I know he has his issues but a lot of his anger was misdirected
@@terminatrix92 explain?
Cristopher mentioned at one point that the UK cinema legenend Glenda Jackson had just recently died !!! What struck me that there was no response from the audience at all !!! She was a two time Oscar winner & much more !!! Was it ignorance or indifference. Christopher gave her credit and at the very least she deserved a round of applause. No doubt about it!
@@terminatrix92thats 100% right that its just another job to him and he must get really bored of people asking what his favorite episode was 18yrs on so if he can make money out of it then why not.
Typical of Mancunians and folk from the north of England as a whole. We're not always the best mannered people but we say it as we see it.
I love how hes himself. Hes not some PR machine. He says what he feels. Its...refreshing. Also, the respect he has for writers, the unsung heroes of shows, movies AND audio.
He's clearly got a lot of respect for the unsung heroes, he seems like a genuinely good dude if not, perhaps overly principaled.
Eccleston's Doctor doesn't get enough credit because he feels so different from the more zany antics of those after him. But he is the Doctor who doesn't know if he's fit to call himself the Doctor again, the one with the freshest memory of what he did (or thinks he did), the one who has never been so happy as the one time that he was able to save everyone. That's why The Empty Child still stands out to me, because there is no villain, only a problem. No one is trying to destroy anything, no conqueror's no depravity, just a mistake that needed fixing. The Doctor needed to remember that he doesn't destroy beings, he helps them, he saves people even if sometimes that means the destruction of those creating the problem. Eccleston reminded the Doctor who he is so that all the Doctors after him could get back to saving people and preventing cataclysms like the Time War from happening again.
I love your critique of his Doctor and the story. thank you. Chris Eccleston set the bar for the Doctor- He saves people.
Christopher Ecclestone is what Peter Capaldi should have been. They both had a brilliant character arc and a brilliant companion. The difference is that instead of dragging down the story by playing the Doctor as a sociopathic piece of shit, Ecclestone elevated an already solid foundation by being dark and brooding whilst successfully balancing it out with charm, humour and enthusiasm.
I find it baffling that people unironically call Peter Capaldi the best actor who's played the Doctor. John Hurt alone proves that assertion is complete bollocks and he only had 1 full episode. Patrick Troughton proved that regeneration could work in a time where nobody knew if the idea would be successful. Matt Smith managed to step into David Tennant's massive shoes without any safety nets. And Christopher Ecclestone brought Doctor Who back from the dead. There are so many Doctors who are far better actors than Peter Capaldi.
@@tomnorton4277Paul McGann and Sylvester McCoy are also excellent actors. Personally, I do rate Capaldi very highly. I just think he was given some duff material. But I do agree with you about Eccleston. He gave the Dr a soul and gravitas that I don’t think we’d seen; before or since. He’s my favourite New Who Dr and I struggled with David Tennant’s broader portrayal for a good while after him.
He doesn't destroy beings? Are you sure about that?
@@tomnorton4277When was Twelve a sociopathic piece of shit? I guarantee you have no idea what that means and are just like every other internet psychologist who overuses that word. I guarantee you know nothing about psychology and get all your information from idiots on Twitter and CZcams.
What exactly do you think sociopathic means?
1989 - 2005 = 16 years.
2005 - 2023 = 18 years.
Doctor Who has now been back on the air longer than it was off.
8 more years and New Who will have been on as long as Classic Who.

its not gonna last that long
Probably not. I think we'll have one long break again.@@KFCGull
It'll be cancelled soon.
23:06 - Oh my goodness, what an answer! A true class act, just being his honest unfiltered self. Nothing performative here, my respect for his integrity just went up even higher.
Absolutely. It's very easy to forget, especially in the rabid fandom of Doctor Who, that acting is just a job like any other. Eccleston might only do Big Finish for the money but he works bloody hard and never phones it in. Phenomenal actor.
@@nareikacMancunians
Everyone else would feed us some line of BS about "Oh, it's so fulfilling, it's so lovely meeting you all, it's purely for the giggles, it's for the love of the show, it's for the love of flying and getting jetlag on an eight hour delayed flight" ... nah, "Money. Divorce. Bankruptcy."
We all know this stuff anyway, when we hear about people's lives, don't we? "Ohh so and so suddenly started aggressively appearing on the convention circuit" or "Ohh, now he or she is suddenly not doing high drama anymore, she's on TV playing vampires or aliens in questionable kids TV" ... we all know what's up, and being honest about it just entirely deflates any hoo-hah, any snickering in the back room, doesn't it? Integrity is awesome.
I know for a fact I wouldnt agree with Eccles on many things, but I would still fookin' prefer to have a round of beers with him than many others I could think of. Authenticity is so rare.
28:44 "Some of the people I've had to work with have given me nightmares..." I love his sarcastic humor. He's very no nonsense but in a genuine way.
He's such a genuinely warm and heartfelt person, I think the reason his Doctor was so succesful was because it was a mirror of who he is.
For anyone's info, the upcoming theatre job he teases at the end was announced as him playing Scrooge in A Christmas Carol on stage in London later this year!
Sounds like the perfect job for him.
@@chrispy3369 Oh wow !
@@tortysoftI don’t think they meant that disrespectfully. Scrooge is a very complex character. He is greedy but is broken down by the world and becomes a better person by the end of the story. In a lot of ways, the 9th Doctor is very similar to Scrooge. By the end, both of them have a new lease on life, optimism, and hope.
@@hexogramd8430 I agree, I love the story. If Chris can get even close to Alistair Sim's performance it would be unmissable.
Funny cause Capaldi, aka Twelve, also played Scrooge before
It's a bit cutting to hear outright, but I appreciate and respect his position regarding why he came back to Doctor Who. It's easy to forget actors are people with bills to pay sometimes.
This guy is unapologetically honest, so rare nowadays
Eccleston doesnt get enough credit for how great he was in doctor who! The man literally had the impossible task of not only playing the doctor after a 15 year hiatus but also had to win over fans both old and new to bring doctor who back to popularity and honestly not only did chris succeed in bringing doctor who back to life but it wouldn't be as popular now if it weren't for him
The girl who said that he got her into the show and that without him it wouldn’t still be around? I completely agree one million percent, I LOVE his doctor, and his performance got me hooked ❤❤
An incredibly honest Mancunian, kudos to Christopher Ecclestone to admit he couldnt do conventions because of his principles in that he felt he was ripping people off. Sir, you are not ripping us off. We admire you, you're talent and your heart. Thank you for being part of bringing our favourite show back. We will always be grateful.
I’ll die happy if I see this man on TV as the Doctor again in beautiful 4K. Give him his own story if that’s what he wants!!
Won't happen now RTD is in charge.
Maybe they could have him in a flashback sequence. Have him on his own while also tying into a new story.
@@stubblytuna4068 would literally love to see that.
@@frankshailes3205 sigh. I hope they can come to an agreement and set aside their differences for the fans.
@@NileSWPhotography he says he wants to be on his own so it’s a good compromise then maybe we could have rose back as well
This guy man, is the reason I love the show. We're from the same city and I did the course I did at uni because he did it. Legend.
GET IIINNN!!! LOVE Christopher Ecclestons' panels, he is just upfront and unfiltered - he speaks right from the heart. Love the man. Thanks for this, can't wait to hear this.
This may be the single best convention appearance I've ever seen anyone deliver. And I'm not even a huge DW fan. Now I want to watch his season again
"My Agent's over there, he should know...
...Oh, he's drunk"
I'm going to give a talk tomorrow about putting the colour back on old John Pertwee Dr Who episodes. When I did that as an experiment in 1986 I told the BBC Dr Who production office that it was possible - but it would take time and money. They said there was no point, no interest, no audience. HA! I left the BBC.
When Chris brought it back I watched with my kids - and cried. Thank you so much everyone !
My father worked as a sound man on First Dr episodes. I have had a hand in working on all the 20Century Drs. It's FANTASTIC that the Dr has proved to be timeless in our 21st.
Beast of an actor
Just walked right into that role of Doctor Who like he’d been doing it for decades! Legend.
Such a kind person
My fave Doctor
And mine :)
He single handed got me into Doctor Who. Now after watching everything Who I can find. He’s still my favorite Doctor. 🤷♂️
Ecclestone is MY Doctor and always will be ❤❤❤
So much so that you spell his name wrong
Still to me -- an old school fan whose favorite is Jon Pertwee -- he is THE BEST of the new guys. I had no idea if I'd accept a new Dr Who, but he had me with his first scene.
Is it the part where the Autons have Rose back against a wall and the doctor grabs her hand and says “Run” or my favorite part where the doctor says “I’m the doctor by the way what’s your name” Rose says her name and then the doctor says “oh nice to meet you Rose run for your life”
My favorite Doctors are Pertwee and Eccleston as well!
He was the best bc he buggered off after one series.
Makes sense, Pertwee was also the most "down to Earth" and "serious" as The Doctor, and the most "professional" and "honest" irl...as opposed to the others that geek out.
Love Eccleston as the 9th Doctor. I watched the new show after seeing a 15 min preview of one of 11's seasons, but I started from the beginning with Eccleston and was instantly hooked. I watched the 1st 3 eps in a row (for me this is extreme over-the-top binge watching). He absolutely sold it and made the cheesy lower-budget aspects at that time work. Edit: meant to mention that as I went back to see the original series, Pertwee has been my favorite of those Doctors. Both 3 & 9 have that dry humor that's worked into much of their dialogue. The actors bring it out so well.
Chris was a wonderful Doctor. I must try to get some of his Big Finish stories. I have listened to some 8th Doctor stories with Paul McGann & the acting & writing in those was amazing. When Doctor Who came back in 2005, my anticipation & anxiety were so high as I was hoping for an awesome series. As soon as Chris said 'run' I knew every thing would be fantastic! Thanks Chris.
The reason why i like Chris is when he audition for Doctor who and his honesty on the show he still gave it what it needed and what he got as an actor so i'm so glad he was the 9th Doctor and he made the show rise up again
He is hand down one of the nicest actors, I love the humour but also the serious underline that follows with it. I really think he has a great range of acting and I especially loved that he a narrator on some of the more serious documentaries on the NHS etc (cant remember the show i think it was 999 what the emergency). Just something about his voice is soothing and northern which is what I am and it nice to hear a difference to the southern rp voice that is so common in narration.
I love Chris so much. He was my first doctor!
Chris is such a great actor and not full of himself. He understands as an actor, he's a tool for the script and writing, and how that deserves the credit.
What a legend, I'd love to meet him
Christopher was absolutely -brilliant- fantastic in the role. And he didn't something no Doctor Who lead ever did. He brought the Doctor back to life.
Eccleston's Doctor is and always will be my Doctor ❤❤
23:54 "I loved playing the doctor, I did not love some of the people I had to work with"
I bet he's talking about John Barrowman and Noel Clarke
are John and Noel known for being troublesome?
@@InternetFadJohn was outed relatively recently for doing some really messed up stuff while on set. Lots of sexual harassment.
He’s talking about the director of the first slate of episodes who swore at and belittled the crew, he famously got into many arguments with this director, because of what he considered to be unprofessional and disrespectful behaviour, which lead to some upper level members of management at the BBC to pressure him into leaving after the first season, because they came down on the wrong side of the issue and thought Chris was simply being difficult, so presumably he’s talking about some members of the BBC management too.
He fell out with Russell T Davies who then went on to use the slur on Harriet Jones against him by saying to the press he was leaving because he was tired.
@@boxinggospel5334 Wow, is that really the connection? I didn't know that.
I love that he's become comfortable enough to tease his audience but there is also a lot of respect as well, as he said about his encounter with the Iraq veteran. He's blunt, but he talks to the fans like adults and truly seems to enjoy interacting with them.
9th Doctor was amazing
In 2020 I was in Manchester City centre and Christopher walk by me I said to him omg doctor who he said yes I play doctor who made my day
Something that never happened
@@LittleLoz Yeah, why would a man from Manchester be in Manchester. Crazy things like that don’t happen.

Chris was the best part of GI Joe and he was why I even started watching Doctor Who.
"The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances" is my favourite 2-parter ever too, thank you Doctor 9!
Chris is such a wonderful straight honest guy. 🤩
He'll always be MY Doctor! 😊
I already liked him now after watching this I like him even more. Such a genuine guy!
"It is all about the writing. I was the tip of the iceberg." Well said!
I love the honesty, very humble man.
Gotta love kids. Can’t separate reality from fiction. So cute that they were worried for their dad as they watched him play the doctor. Reminds me of when Tablo dressed as Santa to surprise his daughter, but she was sad because that meant her dad was Santa now, and she no longer had a dad. Santa wasn’t scary because of the red, it’s because her dad turned in to Santa. It’s quite amazing how trauma induced the child brain can become over these reality splitting instances.
The last fan question and answer was amazing
Eccleston is a brilliant actor. I didn't know he was a Trekie. LoL. Now you listen hear Paramount if any actor deserves a Trek role it's this legend.
SPOILERS: Everybody probably knows by now........but he was talking about the late great David Warner. And given that he was The Doctor in a couple of BF "Unbound" stories, one can speculate that the "someone" Chris refers to is The Doctor. Are they both different versions of the character, maybe from alternate universes?
😅That was awkward at the end, good thing Christopher has a good sense of humor. Great interview and the one with Billie too👍
Very awkward, getting his name wrong and then going for a photo makes him seem very disingenuous.
He is my Doctor and has been from the first episode of Doctor Who I saw.
Absolutely love his doctor, always will. Just wish he could have been on the show longer
Nice to see a fellow Brit being authentic (and sarcastic) rather than trying to be an American. There is a difference. Chris is a great actor and very underused which I guess is why he's doing this stuff.
I love this man 🤗♥️♥️♥️MY DOCTOR...ALWAYS AND FOREVER....
Will always be my Doctor.
Dr. Who 1976 Tom Baker my introduction with my dad. Chris Eccleston was my daughters first Doctor and My First Doctor after getting out of the US Navy as a veteran.
Christopher Eccleston was my first doctor he was fantastic and i enjoyed him as the doctor even if matt smith is my fav i still have him in my top 3
I know he hates the multi doctor storylines and all, but it would be absolutely amazing for him to join Doctors 10-15 someday for a special, I think him and Capaldi would definitely get along
I suspect the actor he's referring to having worked with for the 60th is David Warner, every clue he sorts of gives and every description really applies best to him, and I frankly am absolutely bouncing with excitement for it if that is in fact what's happening because David Warner was every bit as legendary and actor as Chris talks about here.
I still maintain that Christopher Eccleston could have been an amazing Malekith (especially with the big grin) but as he says, it's all about the writing, and there just wasn't much there.
He'll always be Nicky Hutchinson to me. OFITN the seminal 90's British drama series. (We wouldn't have had Danie Craig as 007 without it.) Brilliant as The Doctor, brilliant as Nicky Hutchinson.
Really cool, seeing dude embrace doctor who now, was my fave doctor till 11
Love the answer to the last question
"...And I'd take them into a darkened room...and I'd _speak_ to them."
This was the day I died, laughing.
Loved him as Dr Who.
I would have loved to meet him he is my fav DR
I get such a feeling of gratitude from Chris...a subtle adjustment from when he was still hurting from what was happening in his life.
he is such an honest person
"All this six doctors multi thing, I'm not interested!"
Wad he offered a chance to be in a 6 doctor story then for the 60th anniversary (and presumably turned it down) 👀
Ecc, Ten, Smi, Cap, Whit & Gat!
@@beefbusiness52 Most likely, yes. Also, apart from "Twice Upon a Time", Peter Capaldi has stated that he's not very interested in another multi-Doctor story.
Ahhh have even more respect and love after hearing him on this❤️
Shallow Grave is my favourite Christopher Eccleston film and I love the ninth Dr. In Chris' place, I'd have answered K-9 to the 'other companions' question.
The first thing I remember him for was for a TV drama that he did called HILLSBOROUGH. For anybody that doesn't know it was based on the worst disaster in British football history. 96 fans were killed because of mistakes made by the police. The police turned around and claimed all the fans were drunk and trouble makers. None of them were drunk or wanted to cause trouble. They just wanted to watch the match. A lot of Liverpool fans turned up hoping to get tickets to the match on the day. They were all stood outside one stand alongside fans who had tickets. The police chief who was in charge of the security that day had never been in charge of a football game and lost control. He told his officers to open the gates and let in all the fans outside the stand. The stand was so full fans got crushed and 96 fans died that day. Afterwards the police officers in charge tried to cover it up and say the fans were to blame and the police were the victims. I They could have asked the referee to delay the game. The referee has this power. This would have meant they would have enough time to only let in fans who had tickets. Those 96 fans would still be alive if the police chief had simply asked the referee to delay the kick off of the game. But he didn't and 96 innocent fans died.
Real Doctor Who fans will back him
He tied his shoe at 27:00 just in case that bothered anyone else.
I so much want the 9th Doctor to be a surprise during the 60th!

I saw some rumours online that Eccleston might be Snape in the new Harry Potter series. There's probably no truth in it whatsover, but whatever your feelings on HP / JK, you've got to admit, he would be bloody perfect in that role. Brilliant actor. I'm so happy that he feels more able to engage with the Who community now. Loved his little dig at Thatcher and Reagan here too -- socialist solidarity 😅✊
Probably the only person I’d be happy with playing him other than the legend Alan Rickman.
@@KJD729 Agreed!
I think he'd be great as Snape, but in the stories, Snape is only in his 30's. Alan Rickman was absolutely amazing, but he & the actors for James & Lily were too old. James & Lily were just out of school, maybe 20ish. The actors looked 15 years too old. Hope they get it right this time.

Patrick McGoohan was actually American. He was born in New York in 1928. But he moved to Ireland when he was a baby. Similar in a way to Keifer Sutherland. He was born in London, but then moved to America when he was a baby. Or Sam Worthington. He was born in the UK but moved to Australia as a baby
Patrick McGoohan was flat mates with my uncle back in the 1950s. He actually taught my uncle to drive (my Uncle was a horrible driver by the way!) and my uncle was engaged to two of Patrick's sisters at different times. My Uncle last saw Patrick in a pub in Ireland sometime in the 60s.
