    Have to add a correction: it was Pete Rozelle not Paul Tagliabue that Davis clashed with. This feud dated back to the merger as Al wanted to be the NFL commissioner.

  • @BroadswordMedia
    @BroadswordMedia Před 6 dny

    Yeah I remember just how bad that relationship was. I'm from the Bay area and I was in Oakland raiders fan at the time. Actually Lane Kiffin was seen as a success at first. The raiders had the worst offense by far in 2006 and sure the raiders were able to get two wins that year but they were kind of lucky to do so and it really was the defense did all the work in both those wins. One comment I saw in an article on the press Democrat said it all when they got that win against the Steelers in 2006. Chris Carr returned an interception for a touchdown for more yards than the total amount of yards the offense went that entire game.
    So to put that in the perspective with the raiders having their offense improved from what I think was probably the worst offense I had ever seen in my life and the only reason they had any wins was because of them having somehow a really amazing defense that year, all for the raiders offense to improve to like 21st I think which obviously isn't very good but it's a dramatic improvement from where they were the year before, a lot of us raiders fans actually saw Lane kiffin as a success at the time even though the team still wasn't really that good but they were noticeably improved at least on offense. Not sure why the defense took such a step back though.
    A lot of us did not want Lane kiffin to be fired. Looking back at it now at least in my opinion I think it was the right decision. It was just two seasons later when the raiders were actually in contention for the division for two straight years as a matter of fact. It was indeed a very dramatic relationship between those two. If somehow they could have made it work and the raiders actually improved a lot more and maybe even made the playoffs which even then was still extremely unlikely, it might have actually made for a good movie😂

    It seems like that super bowl loss against Tampa broke Al Davis. Those last few years of his life were ugly for the team and honestly, his son proves nepo babies are just not a good thing. But yes, Davis up to 2002 is a remarkable, unique person. Afterwards, he was a remarkable meddler in his team.

      The problem with the Raiders has always been money, they can't sign players to good deals due to ownership having to put the money into escrow which they do not have. Even today the team is mostly owned by Bank of America

    Technically Saban asked Kiffin to leave because he felt he was too distracted with program building. So we got Sark as a terrible playcaller to lose us the title.

    It was some bad timing in that 07 draft for the Raiders. The O-Line was in bad shape and they needed someone like Joe Thomas. They needed a qb too because Andrew Walter wasn't the guy and when people were saying Russell could throw 60 plus yards on his knees, I was wondering with that line how far he could throw on his ass.

    Al Davis is both the best and worst thing about the Raiders, and even in death, his shadow lingers on, which is kind of why Davis is such a controversial figure.
    Best, cause you have to admit that Davis was the architect behind those 3 Super Bowl wins, since as GM, it was Davis who drafted those players who brought him those Lombardis. Plus, the man was a proponent for civil rights, not afraid to hire minorities (Art Shell is black, Tom Flores is Hispanic) or women in executive roles (Amy Trask).
    However, Al's penchant for marching to the beat of his own drum was also a double-edged sword, and the reason why the Raiders slowly declined, which lasted long past Al's passing. As shown with Kiffin, Davis was notoriously petty with people who slighted him, and this also extended to his own son (apparently Al did not like how chummy Mark was with players, and kept him away from football ops until he passed). Between Davis and Jerry Jones, at least Jones is sane enough to think about the future, whereas Al clearly thought he would live forever, seeing how much of a mess the Raiders became after he passed.

    Kiffin knew players Davis knew football. Kiffin sucked as a coach though and Davis sucked at evaluating players. He overlooked skill in his later years and relied solely on size, speed and strength.
    That's why he tolk JaMarcus Russell and remember, chose Darius Heyword-Bey (spelling) over Michael Crabtree. DHB was incredibly fast.

      Davis was big on trying to break any racial barriers (Coach Flores as one example). He also broke gender barriers with Amy Trask. He was one of few coach or owner who didn't like the segregation or racial barriers and was loud about it in his own ways.
