An added note for those of you with TURBO: The procedure is almost exactly the same with the additional step of removing the pressurized tube from the intercooler to the TURBO that goes over top of the engine. Then additionally removing the large rubber air hose from the output of the intercooler that was attached to the plastic tube that went over the engine. This is done simply to make removing the upper air conditioning bolts easier. Other than those two extra steps, TURBO cars are exactly the same procedure. NOTE: the intake manifold is larger on turbo cars and "looks" like it's going to be in the way but if you're patient and careful the alternator WILL come out the driver's side just fine.

Great video, helped me change the same part in a hurry! We disconnected the upper rad hose and had lots of room to remove the alternator without losing more than a cup of coolant- saved a few steps. We used a V40/S40 alternator without any trouble. Thanks again!

Clearly explained and easy to follow.Armed with the knowledge gained from this video I replaced the alternator on my 2003 V70 in 2 hrs 7 minutes with only 2 expletives, which is pretty good for me! I found that unbolting the power steering pump before taking the radiator shroud off gives you a bit more clearance, but that’s just personal preference. Well done 1A Auto, best wishes from Devon, England

Oh, forgot to thank 1A for this very helpful and comprehensive video. This makes DIY possible on today's cars.
Also the procedure I used(link posted below) was successful on my 2004 XC70 with turbo. No surprises. Be careful of small wires on back of alternator when reinstalling. I pinched mine under the 12mm bolt head and severed the wire. Had to splice on new termination. Rookie mistake. Also, I could not use the 14mm ratchet on the tension pulley as suggested here since my pulley did not have this nut. I was able to use the T55 torx to release tension on the pulley. The torx socket next to the pulley is hard to see but it is there.

Very helpful, good video. Just done my old 2001 V70 Mk II 2.4 petrol non turbo in the UK, so right hand drive. Did not need to touch the radiator fan. Disconnecting the top radiator hose at the radiator end, it spills a bit but not too much coolant, and there was room to pull the alternator straight up and out. The 13mm bolt in the video at the top of the alternator was a 12mm on mine. The main hassle I had was the lack of room to get a socket on the 14mm nut on the tensioner pulley and my lack of a decent tool. I got it done eventually with a short 14mm ring spanner but I will go looking for a better tool if I ever have to do this again.

Excellent video. Just heading out to the garage to see how well it works for my '07 Xc70 turbo.
Oh yes, on the '07 you need a T60 Torx to move the tensioner pulley.
OK, it's out - one hour. Not too bad for first time. On the '07 turbo you need to remove the turbo line that crosses over the top of the engine and the hose that attaches it to the intercooler. All the bolts are 10mm heads on the power steering pump, alternator, and AC compressor.

The Procedure is nearly the same to a Volvo V70 II 2.5 TDI. I've changed my Alternator today at this car. The main difference is, that during this procedure the compressor for the air conditioner is not touched. Only two screws at the Alternator have to be unscrewed.
Thank you for the hint about removing the radiator. Without this step it is not possible to get the damn thing out of the car.

This works with my 2006 Volvo XC90 2.5 turbo. the only difference is no need to remove the radiator fan, but you do need to remove the over engine turbo intake tube. Identical other than that. Also, the universal serpentine belt wrench tool that you can rent from AutoZone with a Torx 55 bit was much easier than a regular socket wrench. mostly because it was longer and thinner. Thanks for the vid!

Thank you so much for this Video!!! It was 100% exact on point for my 2002 Non Turbo S60; with the one exception I had a 55 Torx as the Tensioner and had to remove the Stabilizer Bar to get enough leverage. On my 02 s60 my Pops and I replaced the Pulley Wheel on the Alternator that spun off after 231,000 miles. Sadly we had to get the Pulley wheel from FCP Euro because we could only find Alternators on the 1Aauto site, nor IPD which surprisingly specializes in Volvo's. At this stage in the game being a CA car I trust a Bosch Alternator with 230k on it over a remanufactured Chinese one, etc. I have no clue how long the fix will last but for our 02 Non Turbo S60 this video was exact. Only difference was a 3/4th 55 Torx in a kit we got from Harbor Freight and a Serpentine Belt Kit. About $40 total. It is ultra rare to have an Alternator Pulley wheel come off. There are other videos on that. 1Aauto thank you so much my car would literally be in a junk yard if it wasn't for this video. I will look for parts from you in the future. THANK YOU A TON!!!!!!!!! (If you do happen to need a Torx for the Tensioner on a Volvo Serpentine belt make sure you try to get the 3/4 rather than the 1/2 inch because it is super tight and more than likely a serpentine belt kit will be needed.) You might be able to get a loaner from Auto Zone or O'Rielys. Having done several tight fit jobs on Volvo and BMW Sedans I decided to get the Harbor freight cheap tool in case I need it again.

Why remove the power steering pump? Just for working space? Because you can remove the alternator without removing the steering pump. And as mentioned below: some V70's have a T60 bolt on the tensioner pulley, not a 14mm. It's hidden behind a small plastic cap which should be pried out first. Excellent video, BTW. Like the one on the timing belt, which I replaced using your video.

Dont have to disconnect battery in rear, just take 13mm nut off of fuse box underhood and removes power down to alternator

My alternator's wire caps don't really seem to unscrew at all. Any advice?

Ummm not so easy for us with turbos. The lower intercooler pipe is in the way. Ive been twisting the alternator for 20mins. It’s too tight a fit without damaging the radiator but i had to force it through.

+Charles estep Thank you for the response. We do not have the appropriate location for this vehicle. The other option you would have is check with an automotive forum where other owner's share their experience. 1aauto.com

+Charles estep Thank you for checking us out. The vehicle will have one, but may be located in a tough spot to access. We recommend viewing a service manual for the exact location. 1aauto.com
