Making a 5 yard kilt for myself, part one

  • I've been putting in 12- and 14-hour days this last week, so I decided to treat myself by making a kilt for myself from a 5-yard piece of cloth that was left over from a previous commission. (As I recall, I was trying to talk the client into having a shoulder-plaid to match his kilt, or maybe a pair of trews - I forget which. Maybe I just liked the sett and palette and wanted some for myself! )
I'm going to keep track of my hours here as I /might/ want to add these 'small kilts' to my product line, and I'm going to experiment/invent some new ways to make box-pleats.

I am a Swedish woman about to marry a Norther Irishman and I endeavour to sew cilts for the wedding. I have maybe intermediate sewing skills. I've got "the art of kiltmaking" and am so fascinated by your videos. I hope to be able to produce a worthy kilt (or hopefully two since I am marrying in to these traditions), but we shall see. Either way I am eager to get a glips of your process and I love the tidbits of history. Since my fiance is a former soldier this video seem extra fitting. Thank you!

Looking forward to seeing your process with shorter cloth lengths.

ps I put some more comments for ' piccalillipit ' about the greatcoat in your last post but somehow they are not published. You know what might be the reason?

Box Pleat would not be used by the military in those days ?

Very cool. I hope that we get to see the final product and any interesting choices that you make along the way.

I really like that tartan. I know you plan to pleat to the stripe, but could you show a quick example of to the sett. I can never decide myself.

So for the shorter yardage kilts, it’s best to mark the aprons and then just maximize the number of pleats you can get out of it?
About to start a 5-6 yard kilt for myself in Scotland Forever tartan!

Pretty much, yes - just as we do with the full 8-yard kilts: mark the aprons and deep apron pleats, then count how many times the sett 'repeats' between the two, and make your plan! Best of luck with your own kilt, and please show us all how it turned out on my FB page: facebook.com/groups/445650102179120

Or have it as a fold over as a flap

Why won't you just fold it to reduce the height/length instead of cutting it

That's not a bad idea, but I look tubby* enough already without the doubled cloth wrapped around me!
*It's called 'middle ' age lol!
seriously though, I'll give your suggestion a try with the next 'small kilt' that I make.
