  • Sleep-deprived though I was (I'm sure that the Infantry School used 'sleep deprivation' as a teaching tool - my 'personal best' was 4 days awake while being assigned tasks of increasing complexity and stress) I finished the kilt less the lining*.
I then wore it for the balance of the day just to see how the pleats and aprons would behave. I'll subject it to another days' wear and if all looks good I'll put the lining in later this week.
*had I put the lining in and then found that I needed to make any alterations I would need to pull out work that I'd already done - and that wouldn't be very bright of me, would it?

Robert, I wanted to watch the whole series before commenting. I am impressed at how, wen facing a challenge, you draw on your years of experience, but also that you are not unwilling to try something out and change your approach. Your new kilt is beautiful. I hop[e you get years of good use of it.

On the subject of jeans: o have found non stretch denim even in Levi’s, but despite still asking high price, the Denim is thinner and likely to not last near as long as what they used 10+ years ago.
The stretch denim seems to be a popular thing , as it gives leeway if your waist or leg circumferences increase a bit. It’s apparently still cotton2” with elastine or Spandax added. - amount varies. But it’s still thinner denim and not meant to hold up for years anymore. Very sad decline.
I’m relatively new to kilting- perhaps a year or so into having more than one & made of wool. But I’ve been sewing costumes and some regular clothes since 1980s. It’s my intent to learn to make kilts, and your videos and fb group have been very helpful in learning. Thank you on this one for speaking about how kilts mold themselves over time to wearer, and observations about trying to use less than 5 yds for those of us with a bit higher waist circumference.

Looks great. If you had to make it out of two pieces of cloth where would you in a box pleat join the pieces ?

Thank you! I'd put the joint as near to the center as possible, and - if at all possible - hidden within the pleat so not to be visible from the inside. (take it as 'given' that I wouldn't place it to be visible from the outside!)
