- ABBA is undoubtedly Australia's favourite pop group of all time, and that affection remains as strong today as it did four decades ago when the Swedish singers first toured the country. Recently, Björn, Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid returned to the studio, recording new music and preparing for a very unusual world tour. Rahni Sadler sat down with members of the band for an unforgettable interview.
This story originally aired on September 17 2017.

My mum rented "Muriel's Wedding" when I was little & it was my introduction to ABBA.....I loved their music, right away, and sang "Fernando" in my elementary school's talent show (while all my friends sang songs by Ace of Base & Boys II Men, lol).....and, now, my daughter discovered them on YTube when she was 7 and they have been her favorite group for the last 3 years😊
A big thank you to 7NEWS Spotlight, from a Canadian fan of both your channel & ABBA!
Awww, thank you so much. Thanks for watching and your kind words. Hopefully your girl enjoys this interview, too!
i am a abba fan
Ace of Base...another Swedish group
@@Mikeatthenet and Roxette
@@7NEWSSpotlight 'Björn' means 'bear', you probably know. The 'ö' is pronounced by forming your lips to say 'o' but saying 'e' instead. So more 'Byern' than 'Byorn'.
ABBA are the only ones surprised about their success. Everyone else knows ABBA is the greatest pop group of all time.
Exactly! They are so humble and down to earth. That's what made them so iconic.
Typical swedish, never admit that you are Great. We are just i the middle
BTS
Totally agree 👍
Loving them all
@@laminage They were truly loved.
Agnetha looks so great for her age, she is even more beautiful than younger version! And she is so soft and humble, what a great woman!
YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!AND WHAT A VOICE!!!AGNETHA IS ALWAYS THE GIRL WITH GOLDEN HAIR GOLDEN VOICE AND MORE GOLDEN HEART!!!!GOD BLESS YOU CHIQUITITA AGNETHA!!!!
Agnetha looked her best in 1968. Check out the cover photo of her in a leather miniskirt on that first album! 😍
I know it's silly but as a Swede, this makes me so proud 🙂
Du har helt rätt 😀
It's not silly, you should feel very proud!!
It is not silly at all. I miss Sweden 🇸🇪 everytime I listen to their music 😢
@@pennykay6368 I'm not even Swedish and I miss Sweden when I hear ABBA!! LOL
Nothing Silly about 4 fantastic people getting together and making the world a better place.
So sad Frida wasn’t a part of this, but both of the women are very media shy. Great interviews all around. This group deserves all the love that they have given us over the years
Benny says that they were lucky. No, they were all so talented
Exactly. Lucky is not the right word in their case. Talent and hard work are the words.
I would add modesty.
You need a little bit of both sometimes. But yes, still highly underrated.
Plenty of talented people out there who never got a big break. They’re amazing, but they were also very lucky.
Many people think that very gifted artists automatically become famous superstars, but many are selling shoes or insurance, they are stay at home mothers, and so on.
They are superstars who never got a break for whatever reason.
We see them occasionally on America’s Got Talent and go, “How can this person not be famous?”
The stars did align perfectly for them at the time though, right place right time first off with Eurovision in Brighton, I believe Benny bet a decent sum of money at big odds that Abba would win with Waterloo, won a large amount of money for the time.
Dear Benny. It is not luck at all. It is discipline, perfection, music, desire to give the best to the public. God Bless You Four!
Benny saying it’s luck is showing humility. If he were to say it was because 4 great singers with excellent pitch ,tone, etc. you would think he was soooooo stuck on himself no one would want to hear them even if they are great
Success is ALWAYS a combination of hard work and luck. You gotta have both because so many talented people go unnoticed in this world.
Awwe I love their humbleness. Those you mentioned & their humbleness is
why they deserve such love, respect, & their fame & success !
Amen❤✝️🙏✝️
This interviewer did a fantastic job. She asked great questions, didn't interrupt & didn't trap them into any malicious or judgy comments which I've heard many other interviewers (from around the world) do. Thank you! Thoroughly enjoyed hearing from ABBA after all these years.
the interviewer is Rahni Sadler, and she is a MASSIVE ABBA fan!
I’m old now, and hearing for the first time. Was back in the deep woods raising babies. Incredible group and fantastical touching new song, “I Still Have Faith In You”. Made me cry 5 times now...
I really like the presenter, Rahni -- very pretty but approachable, open and authentic. Loved her laugh.
Would have been nice if she played a little bit of ABBA music, right? Incompetence right there, Rahni "less" Sadler.
Credits to the interviewer and the production. Well researched and not too cheesy.
I especially liked the reflection of: down to earth.
What The Beatles were for the 1960's, ABBA were for the 1970's. Both bands have an impressive, unmatched catalog of timeless classic pop music tracks.
Definitely, but unlike the Beatles, ABBA were never arrogant with their fame.
John Lennon upset a lot of people on his ego trip back in 1966, with his 'We're bigger than Jesus' comment.
And what are the Rolling Stones from 1960's until present day 😁
They were in the right place and at the right time with all the right music. They are and always be great and much loved. I am 72 and still listen!
I am 55 years old I remember them very vaguely I was very young at the time and I found Agnetha very beautiful ... I am not an English speaker but I loved hearing their melody ... I learned to know them only this year as you say they arrived at the right time with very beautiful song whose music remained in our heads
I’m nearly 60,and still absolutely love ABBA.It’s just a pity they didn’t get back together as all their concerts would sell out right away.
@@marlenejohnston9445 they do
Pp
I think it was not that easy. They were not in the right place. Sweden was not known in the world of pop music. Abba really had to fight to put Sweden on the music map. They had to strive to create their own "right place" in a world dominated by British and American bands. And as for the right time, it was more than that, they participated in the aftermath of the europop created and massed by The Beatles. They had to use all of their talents to achieve a level of global success not seen since The Beatles. They paved the way for many Swedish musicians and that takes a lot more than just being lucky
The girls speak good English and their Swedish accents when they speak their native language are so beautiful.
That distinctive accent can also be heard in the diction of the singing in the songs: "Thank you for the *moosick* "
Just one of the reasons perhaps that made this band so special ✨
Omg I’m sorry but this is so funny to me cuz in Sweden we always say English whit Swedish accent sounds so ugly lmao
@@logauffin701 trust me.
I'm an English man and I live in Tranos in Sweden for 2 years. Your English pronunciation is beautiful :)
@@logauffin701 Most English speakers around the world speak the Queen's English, at least to us in the US. Almost everyone has a Brit accent to us, which is somewhat surprising if you don't know the history of places like India or Nigeria. However, Swedes I have met are mostly relatively accentless except that induced by their parent tongue's natural pronunciation, which in the case of Swedes is not at all distracting. The only thing that most Swedes in the past (and this may have changed with more interaction via the Internet) didn't have was US idiom, that was something that they needed to learn here. Hats off to English teachers in Sweden.
The girls talk old swedish in the interwievs in the 70's its like a throwback to 30-40 or 50s movies - very special (for me)
The greatest pop band in history.
The Eagles , Rolling Stones , Foreigner, the Beatles , Fleetwood Mac and Chicago would like to have a word with you...
Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones calls Abba's song SOS the greatest pop song ever written. 360 million albums is mind boggling. One of the greatest bands ever.
I love that my 16 year old daughter likes ABBA like I did when I was younger
That's really cute! As an avid 16 year old ABBA fan, I wish my parents liked ABBA as well.
Play Dancing Queen at her 17th birthday party 💗
ABBA is timeless. They’ve got lots of new fans. I can’t wait for the album!!
I had the honour of auditioning for Benny and Bjorn. I was in the original North American cast of Mamma Mia in Toronto in 2000. It was one of the highlights of my acting career. If I was in a bad mood, I was always in a better mood after doing the show. 2 years of magic. I love their music as much today as I did as a kid in the late 70’s.
Congratulations on getting the gig! Dream come true.
Me and Agnetha have the same favorite ABBA song. I LOVE The Winner Takes it All. Her voice is so magical in it. .
Benny is a musical genius, together with Bjorn. Frida and Agneta's voices blend so wonderful together.
The young girl " Who's Abba? You got to be joking!" Really. Still love this group. There was indeed something special there and the music was enjoyable.
Wonder if those children were listening to grandma’s music when visiting? Haha bet they were…
Agnetha still looks kind, and she still has that soft perfect voice in her older years. their music will stand the test of time.
It is wonderful to hear how they, ABBA themselves, think of their experiences. I miss Frida in the interview.
Me too.

She’s too high class now as a princess.
@@rainysunday6186 she’s very humble actually. Probably she couldn’t make it. Stop spreading immotivate hate

ABBA is eternal. Good things never die. Thanks for the songs!
"Thank you for the music"
Abba can never be forgotten... their music was too beautiful... I passed my love of their music on to my children.
Now they enjoy their new current music
I grew up listening to ABBA. They will always be my favourite artists. I’m glad they lived in that era of musical purity. They remain humble and down to earth to this day❤️❤️❤️
I still remember walking into the Enlisted Club at NATO HQs, in Germany, July 1976. "Fernando" was playing, and I was hooked. I've loved their music (and them) ever since.
There's really no mystery. It's great songs performed enthusiastically and unironically by great performers. It was a magic mix.
Even my grandchildren knows who ABBA is. My youngest grandchild is 5 years old and his favourite song is Fernando.
Being humble takes you far. This is a great example of them being so greatful, humle and down to earth friends of all. Viva ABBA !!
If anyone had a right to be a bit conceited it was them, but there was nothing but humility
I always play this song every night before going to bed
My favorite is "Fernando," too. It was the first ABBA song I heard.💕
ABBA = Extraordinary composers + amazing voices
The girls voices are so unreal sounding. Their harmony is amazing. The most unique ever
ABBA will be a legend forever, very wonderful, wholesome music makers.
I can't think of any Pop Star Band giving so many hits with each tune being so refreshingly different.. They captured the hearts of the people , both with their music as well as their Swedish grace and charm !
Well put.
LOL!! Every song literally sounds like the last. Every. Single. Song.
bee gees
Benny composed catchy and memorable music, Bjorn wrote simple but easy to understand lyrics and Frida and
Agnetha brought the songs to life with their voices and their stage presence. I am guessing the fact they were so
photogenic didn't hurt either.
The like of their 1981 and 1982 material were not simple. There's no way their lyrics are all round simple, otherwise EVERYBODYS songs would read like Abba's, instead of the Oasis, Take That, Diane Warren, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Madness, Cure, madogga and everything now garbage that rules the world.
All songs are melodious. No screaming, no jarring..beautiful lovely songs.
I grew up listening to ABBA. Their music was a great inspiration for us all during the 70’s ♥️♥️. “So I say thank you for the music, for giving it to me”. ♥️
Giving pleasure to billions of people through their music is a wonderful thing. Best band ever.
I still have my Concert Programme from 1977......8th of March, Perth Entertainment Centre.............luv luv ABBA......Always will...........xoxo
Wonderful for You. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
So jealous Georgie.
I was in Perth in 2010. Visited a friend named Rachel.
There success is largely due to the quality of them as individuals and humility and professionalism..... it showed in their, music interviews and life even to this day they maintain such high quality.... I take a bow to that.... how privileged we were to hear them first hand......
Yeah but since, success for many others is down to being tossers, slags, social media desperados, a mass acquiring followers even dumber than themselves, nepotism and a mass dumbing down of an environmental acceptance of absolutely anything, unless it stirs attention, whether negative or not.
@@kyachdistent1301 Thank you! So I am not the only one who is thinking this...
@@karstent.66 A pleasure, There's some of us still fighting against the mass evil and base stupidity everywhere.
I want to compliment this interviewer. Really fantastic job. I appreciate the subtlety of the questions. She seems to be a genuine fan. It's so silly to focus on the negative, which is all some interviewers want to do as a cheap way to create drama. She drew out the darker parts with compassion, gentleness, and humanity. Truly well done. Thank you!
Hear, hear!
She's lovely. Also did a great Barry Gibb program.
I thought the same thing throughout the whole interview.
Not only fantastic song writers and singers, but they touched our souls in a profound way which stays with you for life. Thank you for The Music, ABBA. Isn’t it incredible how the Swedes are so humble and not bothered about celebrity status.
You said it! Very true.
This lady is a great interviewer and of course the topic is soooo great! They all seem to eb such real people.
They really are. I think the Swedes and Australians share traits. Among them equality and humility. All of the members we interviewed were just as down to earth as they seem.
@@rahnisadler9786 yeah Swedes=Australians 🤣🤣🤣 when u get out from under your rock, dont turn on the tv, you’re in for a little surprise about some little flu thing… you’ll see that these countries are identical. 🤣🤣😁
They never ever claimed greatness. Always stayed grounded. It was inner heartache that ended it. Remember the video honey honey. Stay grounded. Then the end. The winner takes it all. My gosh I'm a 64 year old cowboy and this still brings tears. And then the Eurovision win. It was like a race horse leaving the gate. Thankyou 4 for ALL the memories. God bless you 4.
How sweet! God bless you, Sir 😊
Agnetha is still a beautiful woman. You know why? She looks so natural. No surgeries on her face. Aged beautifully. So modest. And with all do respect she had the greatest rear end!!
Been listening to Abba since I was a young girl. My dad bought me the gold album and we’d dance in the kitchen to it! 25 years later I got to take him to the Voyage show. Absolutely beautiful ❤
I thank ABBA for all the great musical memories they left us in the 1970s. Cracking the USA top 40 is very difficult but they did it 14 times (plus one solo hit each by Agnetha and Frida) Agnetha is still beautiful more than 45 years later.
So is Annifrid...actually Frida really looks amazingly wonderful for her age now...they both do, but in my opinion Annifrid looks younger than Agnetha😊😊

Hello how’re you doing?
One of the best ABBA documentarys.
What made abba was, the two girls voice's! Their voice's when singing together was the hype of that band....no other female singers can sing like them when they sing in harmoney together...they are extremely extraordinary! Total bliss to listen too💛💛💛💛
The world needs ABBA now more than ever
My thoughts exactly!❤️
All songs are melodious. No screaming, no jarring..beautiful lovely songs..
I love how Benny always says “the girls”. That is so sweet. I also loved him bouncing up and down, playing the piano, while he was shaking his hair around and giving out the cute smiles. He was absolutely adorable and gorgeous! Yummy! By the way, I am only 70 years old and I still feel my heart pounding a little faster and harder! Oh Benny! ❤️🌹❤️
У меня такие же чувства)) Бенни феноменален!

I have been on an ABBA documentary binge the last few days and it feels like the interview and the story granted to Australian 7 News Spotlight as a gift by ABBA for the gift the Australians gave to the ABBA during the 1977 tour. This video is also a gift to the rest of the world. It helps us to know and appreciate ABBA at another deeper level. This is probably the best documentary on ABBA by far. A big THUMB UP for the entire production team.
Their music touches my soul.
I truly cried watching this doc because they are such an innocent and fantastic group. I am so happy to hear this album. When life gets tough, I throw on my beloved ABBA and my problems go away for a bit. ❣
To those who grew up in the 70s and 80s are really blessed to have ABBA entertained us and continues to until today. They are very sweet and talented. I loved them then and will continue to love them and their songs as long as I live
Wow. What an absolutely honest and touching interview video of a most humble bunch of people who really appreciate everything that happened to them. To me, their songs and the performances of them are of the highest quality in pop music. Loved watching this. Thanks for posting.
You really can't appreciate the enormity of their skill, abilities and professionalism until you watch a concert video...like Wembley '79. Unfrigginbelievable. They bring everything it takes to reproduce the studio sound but in a live application. Phenomenal.
oh boy... I feel a nonstop ABBA search on CZcams coming on... the 70's/80's were so awesome. So simple...
I LOVED ABBA, and I always will. Their music makes me feel good and to know that those lyrics were written in their second language is amazing! I love, love, love them.
ABBA is forever. Their voices are like angels 🎼🥰🎵👏👏
I’m sure the members of ABBA are fully aware of this…but they have given so much joy and happiness on a global level through their music. ☺️👍🏻
The music is complexly written and played, the lyrics joyful, and the voices magical. Timeless!
Hello how’re you doing?
They are the most compassionate human beings on the earth.they really cared that ticket prices were affordable and that they had the best sound...lighting...that they could get....they were as good as any band ever
The stars aligned, there were four of them, they were ABBA, a blessing to the world from God.
I play my ABBA CDs in my car everyday and while I drive to and from work I sing with ABBA...this brings me happiness and always puts me in a good mood ! :)
My mom used to tell she didn't understand a word of their songs, but she would play their music until the end of time. Once I learned English, it blew my mind how beautiful the lyrics are. She is no longer with me, but I am forever grateful she introduced me to ABBA. 💙
I am a "metalhead" and grew up in the 70's as a child an a teen in the 80's - I scoff at pop music and can't stand anything that normally gets radio play - but ABBA? I LOVE ABBA - their music touches something deep inside and I don't care what people in my genre of music might think - ABBA is METAL as F**K!!

Growing up in the 1970s, my favourite bands were Black Sabbath and ABBA.
Benny's vision in 2017 to make the band into CGI Avatars of their younger selves is now a reality as we can see in their comeback video. This guy is a creative genius. He was the one that organised the high quality video clips of the band in the 70's, which is what Countdown started to play, and the rest is history. Now he takes them to another level, CGI ABBA in 2021.
I will always thank Abba for their music and what they had to go through... pain, fame, sorrow. But they gave us all their best through their music, songs and success. Well done to all 4 of them plus everyone who helped them to make them the greatest foursome ever. Thankyou Abba for the music and being part of our lives. Xxxx.
Agnetha is so beautiful I loved her when I was a teenager and still do now
For me, ABBA can be summed up in one word "MAGIC"
They are too modest about their success. They had great talent and got there through hard work and dedication to their craft. Proper old school musicians who paid their dues.
Typical swedish
Thank you ABBA for the music ♥️
All of their music has a positive energy about it. One cannot help but feel good listening to it!
Impossible to have too much ABBA. But, it needs to be all of ABBA.

There's a kind of poetic justice in the fact that the band that created "Thank you for the music" perpetually kept the guy who sung "I hate the music" off number one. I think this is a case of keeping the music gods on your side. Of course, with ABBA being music gods themselves the other guy didn't really stand a chance.
A 1000 CONGRATULATIONS TO ABBA FOR A 1000 WEEKS ON UK CHART. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. NO ONE CAN BEAT THE MUSIC OF ABBA 🥳🥳🥳🥳

I have always enjoyed ABBA! In fact…I am 72 years old and I have their CD’s in my disc player in my car…and it plays every time I drive the car! Love their music since the 70’s ..I went from their cassettes to their CDs.
I love the brilliance of Benny's melodies and the intellectual wordplay of Bjorn's lyrics. I like how Bjorn takes common colloquialism and cultural references and applies them to relationships ...S.O.S....Waterloo...Name of the Game...Winner Takes It All.
ABBA WROTE AND SANG THE BEST SONGS EVER. BUT TELL ME, DOES SHE KISS LIKE I USED TO KISS YOU, DOES IT FEEL THE SAME, WHEN SHE CALLS YOUR NAME. THE MOST HEARTBREAKING LINE IN A BREAK UP SONG EVER. I remember driving along with my Mum and sister, must have been sometime in the 80’s, singing Ring Ring at the top of our voices. I was in my thirties at the time, and Mum was in her sixties. Good times. It was brilliant music. Happy to be alive music, sometimes sad music, but always fabulous. Thank you for the music ABBA🥰💕💕💕 from 🇦🇺 Australia🥰
Benny’s piano playing and their Swedish brogues bring tears to my eyes. Such an unassuming and talented group. I will always love them! Love the way Agnetha says “back sides” meaning downsides when talking about the tough times in their touring. From the comments I’ve seen from the men on ABBA CZcams videos, it seemed there were a couple of backsides to their story. Lol.
Hehe, it's a typical example of what we call "Swenglish", because the Swedish word for "downside" literally translates to "backside" in English.
Eurovision allowed the world to be introduced to many wonderful artists. I am 57 and still listen to the great music heard on the radio back in the 70's in Florida. 🎼
Loved them, grew up in the 60s thru 80s and got to enjoy their music. It's the music that you want your kids to hear, not like rap! It is happy upbeat and sang of relationships good and bad in a positive way. Never demeaning the other person, very respectful even when the relationship ended. I will always hold them all in my heart, they got me through my toughest teen years, sending them all love!
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
I love ABBA songs and I'm a big fan since my younger days
Agnetha looks so beautiful even at her elder age. Just brilliant band overall. Sweden's finest.
My all time favorite group never got to see them. Going in 78 in two weeks always loved your music.
I absolutely love that ABBA gives first and exclusive interviews to Australian media. They were absolutely massive there, probably more so than any other country. I grew up in QLD and it seemed they were #1 for years, until Split Enz. There is always genuine, mutual respect in these interviews that is so relaxing to watch.
Edit: to stand at Benny's grand while he plays, "Knowing Me, Knowing You" - such things are what dreams are made of!
Talent, hard work, and perseverance = SUCCESS
