Great video. Thank you! Only thing I will add is that you will almost surely have a problem getting the bottom mounting point of the new alternator in the "saddle". There is a bushing on the passenger side of that saddle where the 14 mm bolt goes through. You have to push that bushing out a bit to allow the new alternator to drop in. You can use a bolt, nut, and socket to make a little tool, or can try to use a pry bar or screwdriver or something to slide it out just enough so that it doesn't interfere. The first time I did this it cost me easily another hour or two, and lots of cussing, before I figured out what was going on.
Thanks for the insight. I wiggled my old alternator pretty harshly before pulling it out, which probably pushed the bushing out a bit and made reinstalling a bit easier. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for posting. I've watched 4 vids of this procedure, they're pretty much identical as far as procedure so I practically have it memorized. Your video cut through the chase the most. I like your "no bullshit" approach. Thumbs up!
Thanks for the compliment! I just try to make the videos that I like to watch. I happy to help!
Followed this video for my 2013 Honda Odyssey Touring and it worked out just as described. Thanks for all the little tips and tricks through out. I ran into every issue you did and you sharing your experience really helped me out. Thanks again!
Glad it helped! Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you sir! This video was a life saver. I do have a couple of tips though. For the power steering reservoir, it clips on. So no need to un bolt anything. Also after the altenator was unbolted and ready to pull out. I used belt tensioner tool to move the tensioner out of the way while removing the altenator with one hand.
Great tips! Thanks for sharing!
I just used this video yesterday and word for word this guy was spot on for every step on getting this fixed up. THANK YOU so much! You da man!
Wow! You are welcome! I’m glad to help. 👍🏼
I used a plastic bag over the power steering hose and used the hose clamp to hold it on. Great video I really appreciate it
Great tip! Im glad the video was helpful!

Guess what I'll be doing this afternoon. 😂 Prior to any potentially more complicated project, I usually check CZcams for a video that might show some quirks or tips to help my day go easier. Yours was the one today. It was a great video. Nice job. I see you're just starting out. Good luck and here is subscriber number 33. :)
Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing! 👍🏼

Excellent video. You are an honest and capable professional
I appreciate that!
Good stuff thanks
You are welcome. I hope it was helpful!
Thank you for the tutorial. I found out that I had to remove a bracket that was in the way. Once I did that it came right out. Thx again
Glad it helped! Good job figuring out the bracket. 👍🏼
Very informative, Ty. Luckily my Alternator was ok yesterday. I took it in for testing yesterday at my nearest autozone, it was ok. So I bought a new serpentine belt because I noticed my belt felt it had to much slack. Used a Continental brand(3 year warranty). Now my van is running fine without the "check charging system" notification. Tested it on my multimeter while running, and consistently stays a little over 14V .
Great to hear! If you face the issue again in the future, here are a couple tips.
1. Take a look at this video about how to diagnose charging problems using a multimeter: czcams.com/video/mRcqRaqHkI4/video.htmlsi=a0HwPB89nwBci80y
2. If the serpentine belt appears to have slack again, your issue may be a defective belt tensioner.
I hope this helps!
Thank you!!!
You're welcome! 👍🏼
Getting it passed that ac line was a nightmare but I got it out. Now to put the new one in 😅
Thanks man
I feel your pain... literally! How did the reassembly go?
@@YOUCanFixAnythingAuto I kind of forgot how the bracket went for a second but all in all very smooth. Now it’s just plain running better. Shifting etc
I wonder if we could have dropped it down through the bottom easier?
I’ll have to check next time I replace something
Thanks again!
There is a little play in the a/c hose. Gently shift it a bit as well and moving the tentioner
Excellent instructional video.. Now all one needs is patients.. LOL
A strong lower back helps too!
😂 that is right COFFE!!!! Thanks for you help....save money...
Coffee is the critical element in any project! I'm glad it was helpful. Helping you save money while building your skills is the whole point of this channel! Thanks for watching!
I'm watching this because my mechanic started my change over 2 hours ago. I wanted to know exactly what he was doing. I think I'll do this myself next time. If he doesn't finish it today I won't get my car back until Friday because they are closed on Thursdays. I'm trying not to be frustrated but if I don't get my car back today I will lose almost $300. 😔
Wow, I hope you got your car back in time! Thanks for watching. I hope my video didn’t cause too much frustration! 😅
@@YOUCanFixAnythingAuto I did get my car back late. But while I was watching your video I was able to determine that they must have had trouble getting the alternator out around the AC line. Lol. Turns out that they accidentally released all of my freon. So that is why it took so long. I appreciate your video very much. I will definitely try it myself if the alternator ever goes out again while I have this van.
That fellow coffee thermos speaks of some good coffee
If it’s not good, why drink it? 😏 By the way, it’s a fantastic thermos!
Good video, maybe you can find the torque specs on the alternator mounting bolts.
You can call me a simpleton, but I generally only use a torque wrench when assembling tight tolerance moving assemblies like engines, transmissions, differentials, etc. Years of working on cars developed in me a “feel” and wisdom for knowing how much to tighten bolts. My main caution is when the threads are in aluminum, they are more susceptible to damage from over-tightening.
This video and the links were a great help to me. I was able to perform the repair. Thank you!!
Excellent! Glad it helped!
On Honda Odyssey, do yourself a favor and use Denzel alternators because if not, you would get a flickering light for a alternator. If you just use a aftermarket rebuild, it will not work on a lot of the Honda vans that are fully loaded. Their computer system is very picky, so either use a we M Honda genuine parts or Denzel, don’t believe me you’ll be pulling the alternator right back off and replacing it again
Oof, sorry you’re facing that trouble! Yes, Denso is great and the OE replacement. It’s expensive, but as you note, it’s often worth the investment!
HA! coffee is always mandatory X3 like that. I prefer a like pop or if I had it.. some libations heheh lol, don't knock that tho it does help when you're seething in a way :3 other than that yeah a nice beverage is always great when working on a car.
Thanks! Hydration is important. 😉
Honda odyssey 2012 serpentine belt
I’ll make sure I moan also when I take the bolts out. 😅😂
It’s PG-13 car repair. 😂 Can’t hide the satisfaction. 🤷🏻♂️
Check your video at 14:21
You have a huge spool valve oil leak causing alternator to fail prematurely.
This video does not address the main root cause of why the alternator went bad.
The oil is dripping on top of the alternator.
Will fail prematurely.
Spool valve need to be replaced and resealed
Is a longer process alternator is replaced first then spool valve.
And most likely all the valve cover gaskets, and carburetor, plenum etc since you are there.
In my opinion.
Great catch! Looks like I have some new content for an upcoming video! 👍🏼
Same here just replaced the alt and i see oil on it
@@vasolazovic3670 Need to fix the oil leak coming from the spool valve seal.
need new spool valve replacement and reseal the valve cover. The alternator is the victim of the seal deterioration on spool valve leaking oil on top of it.
I fixed my spool valve leak as soon as it had started but sadly the alternator died a month later anyway.. but this video has been the easiest with out take a bunch of stuff apart
Hey @korn76live, thanks for the feedback! CZcams has been a lifesaver for me on multiple projects over the years. I’m glad my video helped!
One VERY important step is to push the lower bracket bushing back out. If you do not do this the new alternator will not fit and thus all of the issues with "filing" the alternator for being too big!! This other video has a cool trick with a 2" bolt, a 3/4" shallow socket and a washer and nut. czcams.com/video/Bi9GAzrWZ5w/video.html
Interesting. I did not run into that issue and haven’t heard of anyone suggesting “filing”. I’ll check out the video. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏼
Are you serious? This is the problem I’ve had the whole time I bet
Cannot get bottom in between bracket
Lol me too
Working on this right now. I just sprayed that bushing in the car with penatrating oil. Hiping i can shift the bushing over a bit and then put in the altenator
I been at this for the last hour and a half
Dud use a 3/4 shallow socket and a 2 inch nut and bolt and you can press it out😊
I went ahead and did the socket trick. It worked. Also I gave up on removal and replacing through the air conditioner line I decided to disconnect the top radiator hose, unscrew the radiator and the condenser at the top, and remove the passenger side, cooling fan and the two bolts at the top of the grill And I was able to pry the radiator forward and had just enough room to get the alternator out. Also remove and unplugged the hood latch. also had a little bit more room to work with my hands reinstalling the alternator.
You’ve never worked on a vehicle before you don’t have to take those bolts out this pull up on that reservoir and it’s off the bracket related to the side
🤔
honda crap design
As a mechanic and ex-engineer, I’ve done my fair share of cursing engineers and designers. However, I also understand the complexity and difficulty of their work.
You Honda guys do a lot of extra talking Jesus Christ
I'm actually a Chevy guy who happens to own a Honda. As far as extra talking goes, I got nothin' to say...
U ain’t gotta move all that stuff
Lift up the power steering and overflow tank reservoir
12mm
14 mm
10mm
Flat Screwdriver
2bolts on alternator
Dig in 🧰🛠️💪🏿🥂
Do you HAVE to? Probably not. Does moving all that stuff give you more visibility and room to work without adding much time to the total job? Absolutely!
