    what always amazed me when watching Federer live was his ability to neutralize monster serves. Those block returns look so casual but they're so hard to actually time and pull off. So gifted in all aspects of the game.

    • @RogerThatTennis
      @RogerThatTennis  Před 2 lety +23

      Right! Takes a lot of reflexes and wrist strength to return like that

    • @aminulhussain2751
      @aminulhussain2751 Před rokem +4

      @@RogerThatTennis Nothing to do with wrist strength.
      Good reflex of course but you have to deflect the speed.

    • @npanic628
      @npanic628 Před rokem +9

      @@aminulhussain2751 it has a lot to do with wrist/grip strength (and the quality of your grip haha). It's difficult not to let your racquet twist when blocking a hard serve, you also have to hit the sweet spot which is ridiculously difficult

    • @aminulhussain2751
      @aminulhussain2751 Před rokem +2

      @@npanic628 Deflection takes away the force being applied to the wrist so the wrist doesn't have to take a huge impact.
      Deflection could be a very simple slice, you are taking away the power from the ball and redirecting it.
      If you were to meet force with force, that will result in the more heavier object to overcome the lighter one.
      As the ball is traveling at such a high speed and the only thing to strike it back is with your wrist, your wrist will have to be super strong to resist that.
      It's not the best way to return a heavy serve as that can lead to wrist injury.
      The best way is taking the ball early and hitting back with a forehand or backhand that is backed by the body's rotation in order to provide the power and spin.
      The spin can deflect the power from the incoming ball and the rotation of the upper body and releasing it upon contact will provide the pace and power.

      @@npanic628especially at the frankly ridiculously small (by comparison) racquet head size that Federer used for most of his career. It's remarkable and I've always said that Federer is up there with the best returners in the history of the sport but his tactic on return is very different to others like Djokovic and Agassi.

    I was lucky enough to have seen his match against Rafa in 2017 at Indian Wells.
    We were sitting on one of the top tiers but it still was some sight.
    My wife - who rarely watches tennis, and thus is clearly not an expert - said to me during the game that Roger is like he's practically floating on the court.
    I'm not a Novak fan myself, but one has to acknowledge how consistent he is, at 36 he is still the man to beat. Whether or not he is the GOAT, I couldn't tell. For many years to come the numbers he has next to his name won't be surpassed, that's for sure.
    But, the way Roger played this game, with such finesse, elegance and effortless power, that's truly one of a kind.

    Federer's GOAT title may have been snatched by his two rivals but IMO he is the best tennis player to ever hold the raquet, coz he shows everyone how the game can be played, how much tricks you can have in your arsenal and utilize it.The slice defense, how much can you shorten the points if you come to net and use volleys. No point is ever the same. Tennis looks so fun and interesting.
    Nadal And Novak have much stronger defense and baseline game than post prime fed but they they make it so linear, it's like fight for every point, outlast the opponent in baseline rallies, defend until the opponent makes errors, well that game is also entertaining but every point is almost the same . Rafa still uses some good shot making, volleys and overheads but novak rarely comes to the net or use other tactics apart from rallying, (maybe against medvedev he uses slices coz he is also a master of big rallies).But it's like the whole generation after 2015 is doing the same thing. Hit from afar and rally hard, use heavy top spins, rely on opponent errors, fight till your body is exhausted and they are soo succumb to injuries due to this. Nadal and Novak are veterans of this baseline game, especially Novak, you won't win against him by using the same strategies he have been perfecting since ages and Novak rarely gets injured.
    Meanwhile Roger at 37 still didn't needed that to win matches against the new gen or even against Nadal and Novak , he doesn't need to outlast opponent in rallies he just throws so much variety to his opponent it bamboozle most of the players, like kyrgios said, Federer can make you feel really bad at the court, you won't even realise that the match is over.
    I think that's why the way Federer plays it can make everyone believe that they can play good tennis and win, while Nadal and Novak will bring you back to reality LoL.

    I’m lucky to have seen him once live. Cincinnati 2019. Lost to Rublev but , it was so cool to watch his warm up on the practice court.

    That pickup against JMDP at 0:40 is just class. Nice job putting together the court level views!
