  • Shout out to The leader board for this video.
You can watch the original video here: • The Complete Legend of...
In this video, I aim to resolve my longstanding confusion regarding the lore of The Legend of Zelda series. As a lifelong fan of the franchise, I've played nearly all of the games from the original NES version to the latest release, Breath of the Wild. However, the constantly evolving narrative has left me feeling perplexed. Today, I hope to address this issue by reacting to The Leaderboard's "Timeline Explained" video. Please share your thoughts in the comments section and let me know your take on the lore of The Legend of Zelda.

For the fallen timeline, Zelda wasn't killed, she managed to escape and seal Ganon into the sacred realm and continue her bloodline. It was Link that was killed however most of the Links aren't necessarily descendants of each other. It's his spirit that gets reincarnated over time.

Wind Waker is one of the best Zelda games out there! You shouldn't judge it just for the artstyle, not everything needs to be realistic or edgy like Twilight Princess. Zelda always experiments with different artstyles and that's part of the magic of the saga. Wind Waker and Skyward Sword are easily in my top 5 Zelda games. I recommend both!

"That doesn't sound like Zelda" is everything that came out of your mouth from the games in the last 23 years. Have you considered that you may be stuck in the past? Your concepts of what a Zelda game have prevented you to fully any Zelda game afterwards or even give them a chance. In regards to the timeline, yeah it is a mess, but I think people miss the point with it, they believe it is a continuous narrative, but it's not, just by the time gaps between each game it is clear that previous Zelda games chronologically are faded into legend.
Also, as to why there's a Zelda and a Link in A Link to the Past if Ganon killed Link, either you didn't listen or were too much overwhelmed with the info to process it, but you're wrong: Ganon did killed Link, and took away Zelda's Triforce by force, however, she ordered the sages to take action and seal Ganon away in the Sacred Realm. Zelda lived, so the royalty kept going on, and even though Link died, it was never stated that Link had to be a descendant. Demise said "Those who hold the blood of the Goddess and the spirit of the Hero", basically Zeldas are descendants of a Goddess, and Links are reincarnations of the first Hero, this is backed up by the fact that Wind Waker Link isn't blood related at all with Ocarina of Time Link, because said Link was sent back in time, it is the reason why there wasn't a hero to defend Hyrule after Ganon broke off the seal.

      @devonm042690 Před rokem +1

I don't think Wind Waker Link is a reincarnation of the Hero though. Considering that the story of Wind Waker is about breaking Demise' curse by washing away Hyrule, I think the Gods just needed a hero _like_ the legendary hero, for one last go at the incarnation of Demise. That's why they built the Tower of the Gods. The Tower of the Gods was probably constructed as part of the Gods' plan, set into motion with King Daphnes' appeal.

I'm a bit surprised that you think that the Wind Waker doesn't have any connections to other Zelda games. Besides Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess, it's one of the few games in the series that has a clear connection to OoT (Hero of Time is referenced regularly, Hyrule Castle has stained windows depicting sages from OoT, etc.). Funnily enough, I don't really find the timeline all that confusing. Probably because I've played a lot of game series with confusing plots like Metal Gear and Kingdom Hearts.
Anyway, I'm kinda curious what a Zelda game is to you, since you seem think that whenever they tried something new, it's because they "repainted" a new IP idea into a Zelda game. Personally, I think it's more that they want to keep the series feeling fresh and try new ideas, which I'm pretty sure is along the lines of what the series producer Eiji Aonuma has said. That being said, it's understandable why an old school fan like you wouldn't like it.
Oh and just to clarify, Zelda doesn't die in the Downfall Timeline. She's the one who (along with the sages) seals Ganon and the Triforce away in a last ditch effort to stop him. And Links aren't connected by bloodline but by a heroic spirit. The only Links that have been confirmed to be related are OoT and TP Links.

19:48 My thoughts on this whole "this doesn't look/feel like a Zelda game" debacle:
If the series only has one or two outliers in terms of the feel/look, then yeah, it's tonally unique (which isn't a bad thing inherently, but that's not the point I'm trying to make here).
But if enough things make you think "this doesn't look/feel like a Zelda game", then perhaps it's your own view of what a Zelda game is/isn't that needs updating.

  • @johnlucas1543

TNT Gaming, let me explain what's going on here. You are like me & have played this series from the original NES games.
Zelda does not get killed. EVER. If Zelda dies, Hylia dies & the series dies. It's called The Legend of Zelda for a reason.
Link can die because he is not necessarily a part of a bloodline like Zelda is. He only carries the SPIRIT.
Nintendo likes to experiment with Zelda probably more than any other series they have.
That's why the games are so different from one another. That is ON PURPOSE. That's what they want.
Understand that the Hyrule we got to see in the 1980s & 1990s was just a piece of understanding of what Hyrule truly is.
When Nintendo makes a Zelda game, they jump around the timeline to let us know we don't know Hyrule as much as we think we do. But EACH & EVERY game is CANON & purposely put into a sequence of events.
Each new game shows a little more & a little more about what Hyrule is & WHY Hyrule is the way it is.
We get a little piece of more & a little piece more of this fantasy world with each game.
The transition from Zelda 1 & Zelda 2 shows their way of introducing a perspective shift.
The map we played in Zelda 1 is merely a piece of the full map in Zelda 2 over there in the Southwest corner.
And it's not until Breath of the Wild that we really get a cohesive map of Hyrule.
You're wondering why do they keep certain things open-ended & unexplained?
To leave room for new stories & games in between AND to inspire the META-GAME of discussion that has been in Zelda from the very beginning with Zelda 1. They want us to try to figure out this world of Hyrule as they continue to create it.
You were thrown off by Wind Waker & that's a mistake. You need to play that game for real.
As well as Skyward Sword which explains the root of almost everything.
Nintendo RECONTEXTUALIZES the lore. They don't retcon it.
A Link to the Past told you about Ganon once being a man who was a leader of thieves.
A Link to the Past shows you the Pyramid you fight him in the Dark World.
Ocarina of Time finally shows you who the thieves were & why these African/Middle Eastern-looking people make sense being tied to a Pyramid. Ocarina of Time DEEPENED the lore & showed you this ain't just some basic ass medieval fantasy.
A Link to the Past shows you Lake Hylia in Hyrule which reoccurs in Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess & such.
Skyward Sword shows you who that lake & this whole land is named after. HYLIA. HYLIA-RULE = HYRULE.
In the process, we discover that the "Trophy" of Zelda 2 is REALLY a little Goddess Statue representing Hylia.
Just like the giant ones in Skyward Sword & Breath of the Wild.
Tell you what, just ask me to explain a piece of the lore item by item & I'll do that for you.

@@TNTGamingonline No problem. I understand where you were coming from & I think that's why it took someone like you who was there in the 1980s playing these games when they first came out.
Both me & you are the original Zelda-playing generation. That's how I knew how to communicate it to you.
The first 6 games of the series (7 if you count the 1989 Game & Watch Zelda) dealt with one single timeline.
      • 1986's The Legend of Zelda introduces us to this world of Hyrule for the first time.
      • 1987's The Adventure of Link fills out more of the story & world as a Direct Sequel set 6 years after.
      • 1991's A Link to the Past is a fleshed-out Backstory Prequel to the world we knew from the first 2 games.
      • 1993's Link's Awakening is a Side Story Dream Sequence Sequel to give us more of the series' feeling.
      • 1998's Ocarina of Time is a DEFINITIVE Backstory Prequel fully explaining the world of the first 3 games.
      • 2000's Majora's Mask is a Side Story Sequel telling more of the story of Ocarina's Hero of Time.
Then in your eyes, Nintendo went crazy letting Capcom develop a pair of Zelda games Pokémon style.
That's the Oracle games-Ages & Seasons-which feel like they're floating in the timeline unspecified.
THEN some little multiplayer Zelda named Four Swords which you don't know if it's a canon game or simply a game mode within A Link to the Past reissue for the Game Boy Advance.
Then expecting what you saw in the Spaceworld 2000 demo, Nintendo swerves you with The Wind Waker!
And now we have a flood all of a sudden?! We're riding boats?! And this art style is so overly cartoony?!
Are we in medieval times or not? When does this place? HOW does this place? Why does it take place?
Then we get more multiplayer Zelda with Four Swords Adventures which feels like A Link to the Past but it's really not & you can't even freely travel the map, it's in stages form. And the 4 Links look like Wind Waker.
Is this just the home console version of that GBA Four Swords or is it its own standalone game?
On top of all this we get The Minish Cap on GBA filling out the backstory of all this Four Swords stuff.
But in your mind you're saying "I don't CARE about this Four Swords stuff! And who the hell is Vaati?!"
Nintendo seemed to get back on track with Twilight Princess but then Link turns into a Wolf.
I thought he was supposed to turn into a Bunny like in A Link to the Past.
Is this Twilight Realm just another form of the Dark World or is it something else entirely?
What's all this new backstory about the Interlopers? Is this the Imprisoning War backstory or something else?
You couldn't figure out exactly what this game meant to the original 6 outside of it feeling like a mix of Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask mixed together with its own unique twist.
Then Nintendo returns to the Wind Waker look TWICE on DS with Phantom Hourglass & Spirit Tracks.
You already were done with Link on a boat the first time & NOW they got him on a TRAIN?! Hahaha!
Skyward Sword then comes out & fulfills the promise of the Wii but I don't recognize these new races.
All I see are the Sheikah & the Gorons but all of this sky stuff is new. They have been playing with this sky stuff in many of those other games I didn't really care for but now they seem to be going all out.
You were just lost with all the experimentation Nintendo did with Zelda in the 2000s.
I'm sure you felt at home when they put out A Link Between Worlds on 3DS, the spiritual successor to A Link to the Past. That one made some sense to you, I'm sure, even though I bet you were like "But I thought the Master Sword was supposed to sleep FOREVER. Did they lie to me?" Hahahahaha!
Many Zelda fans thought Nintendo absolutely lost it with Triforce Heroes AKA "Three Swords".
This silly fashion plate adventure?? This is not worthy of Zelda. What are they DOING?!
By the time we get to Breath of the Wild you're so lost that you're not sure why this became the best-selling Zelda by far beloved by so many. It's not the Zelda you grew up with or remember.
And you STILL can't quite fit it to the original 6 games when the timeline was relatively simple.
But the hype of both Breath of the Wild & now direct sequel Tears of the Kingdom make you wonder if you're not giving those other "Weird Zelda Games" a fair chance.
I'll explain WHY Nintendo did what they did in following replies to you so you can reconcile the original 6 with all the stuff that came after. I know EXACTLY where you're coming from.

@@TNTGamingonline I KNEW it. We're on the same wavelength. Except I could follow Nintendo's changes.
Let me explain why Nintendo did what they did with Zelda.
To keep Zelda relevant in all of the changing culture within videogaming, they plan out long-term strategies in developing the series to capture MORE & MORE demographics who will make Zelda their own.
Telling the same simple story from the first games would have less & less room for experimentation.
In fact, Ocarina of Time itself is part of this motive to change Zelda & this is where they began to lose you.
You liked Pig-Man Ganon the Beast. But A Link to the Past set up the Human Ganondorf that Ocarina brought to life. Ganon became more complex & would no longer simply be Zelda series' equivalent of Bowser.
Impa was no longer a feeble old lady but a butch amazon protector of Princess Zelda. Now SHE'S fresh too.
To be honest as far back as Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, you could Nintendo deepening Zelda lore.
Triforce is not just one simple triangle but a TRIANGLE of triangles which make up an all-powerful set.
So The Adventure of Link showed Link using full power of Triforce, right?
What happens if the bad guy gets this all-powerful Triforce? That's where A Link to the Past comes in.
But it only raises more questions. If Triforce is all-powerful, how can a Master Sword beat Ganon?
So now we want to know more about this Master Sword & that's where Ocarina of Time comes in.
That game deepens the Triforce story even more by saying it can split into parts embedding itself in hosts.
NOW you have the perfect thing to advance various plots showing the condition of the Triforce in each game.
Ocarina of Time was intended to be a pivot all along. That's why it has the 3-branch timeline off of it.
One branch deals with the games before Ocarina & those that fit the older games' feel.
Another branch can be made to tell this particular set of stories from this ending part of Ocarina.
Another branch can be made to tell that particular set of stories from that ending part of Ocarina.
AND we can ALSO tell stories of the times BEFORE Ocarina as well.
Now you can tell many more stories & bring in more players who adopt one title or another as their fave.
Now you can have debates between 2D Zelda fans & 3D Zelda fans to build hype & interest.
The vigorous list battles of personal faves along with timeline theory debates bring more hype & intrigue.
Developers get to experiment & take chances with the series, the fans get different flavors of the Zelda pie.
That's why they went all over the place. They were broadening the series to broaden its appeal.
Some games are obviously connected while some games are still mysterious with remote connection.
But Nintendo will eventually weave all of this various lore together once they build it up enough.
Breath of the Wild & especially Tears of the Kingdom will have connections to games you overlooked.
There's a reason why Breath of the Wild blew up like it did. They have been slow-cooking & marinating Zelda for awhile & they finally delivered a hearty meal of these various Zelda ingredients.
In fact Skyward Sword, A Link Between Worlds, & Triforce Heroes have something to do with Breath of the Wild's direction. ESPECIALLY Skyward Sword the next major pivot of the series.
Also, both Skyward Sword & Breath of the Wild have a LOT of Wind Waker in their DNA if you notice.
Tears of the Kingdom seems to be a mix of Skyward Sword & Breath of the Wild all at once.
Once Nintendo built up enough rich lore, they finally cooled the debates dropping the origin game of the lore.
And right beside it came Hyrule Historia on the 25th Anniversary.
Now that the past has been codified they were moving into the future for the series.
Open-ended exploration in A Link Between Worlds. Clothing options in Triforce Heroes.
Breath of the Wild has both & Tears of the Kingdom was being made alongside Breath of the Wild.
They were intended from almost the beginning to be a two-pack.
If Breath paid off, then Tears is unstoppable & will crest Zelda to an even higher position.
Notice how they release Tears in the afterglow of the now-billion dollar Mario Movie.
It's a one-two punch to have these franchises embraced by a new young generation. All planned.
These series are so long-running that parents can pass them down to their children as tradition.
If you want to understand Nintendo, then you gotta understand that they always plan for the long-term.
People may not get them at first but usually the things they do have long-term pay off & sustainability.
The Legend of Zelda is not just whimsy & lighthearted and it's not just gritty & dark either. It's BOTH at once.
And that's why it has ALWAYS been one step beyond most of the medieval sword & sorcery fantasy games.
There's a complexity in its simplicity. The games tell real world messages in allegory.
It is actually a religion-rooted game but not telling only one religion. That's why they hit so hard.
Is Zelda a representation of Jesus Christ or is she a representation of Amateratsu?
Is magic science or is science magic? Is the message of the Triforce real life advice on how to live?
Putting out killer games back to back with varied presentations pull more players into this fantasy world.
And one way or another, they come out of the games with a whole new outlook on life.
Keeps the series fresh, relevant, & alive to build a monumental legacy Nintendo can feast on for decades.
The lore is not simple because the lore is not yet complete. It will never fully be complete.
Because with this legacy (timeline videos included), there will always be another story to tell of this Legend.

A continuation of the story and lore that fans are familiar with. This was something that was executed fairly well with link to the past and Ocarina of time. Unfortunately, Nintendo destroys the bonds you develop with the previous games as each iteration of a Zelda game is a “new link”in a “new hyrule”. Yes, some aspects are the same and similar but what about the characters you’ve fallen in love with? Link is no longer “The hero” but just a hero that happens to be reincarnated into a hellish cycle of fighting the same enemy over and over again. For me, everything past Ocarina of time looks like a Zelda game but feels like something else. Aight, so...
    >Complaining about becoming a wolf when you enter a Dark World
    >When in the third entry you become a pink rabbit when you enter a Dark World
Hell, the wolf even has it's roots in Shotaro Ishinomori's adaptation of A Link to the Past which ran on Nintendo Power. That also has a fairy companion who was an orb with wings in most panels, much like Ocarina.
    >Doesn't feel like Zelda
Quite literally the biggest complain the series has had up until BotW was that it's redone the ALttP formula over and over. "Get three items of interest, get Master Sword, get some other stuff, go punch a pig" was the mantra of every major entry after the SNES. Really, sailing instead of horse riding, having art inspired by a 1960s anime movie one entry, looking like D&D the next to appeal to the US was purely surface level differences when the game really didn't change, you went to dungeons, get items and explore. Only Link's Awakening and Capcom's Zelda games served as break from the ALttP formula, instead harkening to Zelda 1 by getting 8 things and needing to explore for better swords.
The timeline isn't really all that confusing, it works on Back to the Future logic with "1985A" and "1985B". Downfall was unexpected, but Child and Adult were already discussed as theories back in the early to mid 00's on forums and BBSs following Wind Waker's release and once more following Twilight Princess. Ganondorf and Zelda even discuss this whole thing quite similar to Doc Brown explaining 1985A and 1985B in the Twilight Princess manga adaptation after the Pyramid of Twilight covers Hyrule Castle.
    >Changing the lore
m8, Ganondorf gets foreshadowed again on the SNES title and everything else has just been either filling the gaps on what kind of person the man truly was before becoming the Dark Beast, with Wind Waker having him actually explain his reasoning for starting his conquest of Hyrule. If anything Zelda is almost as guilty as Castlevania or as Mega Man X to sticking with it's conventions and structure until audience exhaustion settled in and had to shake it up, while the other two series I used for example are super dead.

If it's the former, it's okay admitting only OoT meshed well with you, I only liked Pokémon gen 2 (and it's remake) but you really can't say you're a fan of something while hating and disregarding everything but a specific game. Even Twilight Princess, which was made specifically for US audiences and managed by NoA, much to the chagrin of the team in Japan according to the book Art and Artifacts, is getting dissed here for doing... Exactly what A Link to the Past did in 1991, but a wolf instead of a pink rabbit. It's like the Mac and Cheese scene from Courage the Cowardly Dog here.
Wanna see what a dead series looks like? Look no further than F-Zero, man, that's nearly 20 years of radio silence. If anything, had Zelda kept stuck to the ALttP fornula, it would've kept the diminishing sales numbers from Skyward Sword as a continuous trend, rather than the boom in interest and relevancy it saw with the "Open Air" games, even with the flaws of BotW.

  • @g.masterlordoftheg-force4770

Hold on. You said OOT sounds like Zelda.
Skyward Sword doesn’t sound like Zelda because of the whole “three goddesses, Demon King” thing.
Buuut, the goddesses were also mentioned in OOT. We even saw the goddesses. We got a whole story about how they created the world, order, life, and the Triforce. All from OOT.
So if Skyward Sword doesn’t seem like a Zelda game because of the gods, then why doesn’t the same apply to OOT?
OOT even showed them. SS didn’t. Just mentioned them.
By the way, evils like Ganondorf and Vaati are immortal. They are the same dudes. Only Zelda and Link are different.

I understand how you feel, but to elaborate on the Curse of Demise, it’s “Reincarnation”, not a bloodline necessarily. Zelda is part of the Royal bloodline, but Zelda herself is the Goddess incarnate. Reincarnation is not bound by blood. Think of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The avatar is not related to the next avatar or the previous avatar, they just send their spirit into a random person who fits the requirements of the hero or the goddess. And these guys didn’t really explain the timeline well. They left out many details & worded things oddly.

Don't really understand how you could think any of the Zelda games are reskins of what was supposed to be new IPs. The gameplay and plot of pretty much every game since Ocarina of Time followed the same formula until Breath of the Wild, which returned to the Zelda 1 design philosophy. They just changed the art style or setting in order make the games more distinct. This would be like saying every Call of Duty not set during WW2 were new IPs reskinned to be Call of Duty or that Super Mario Galaxy wasn't supposed to be a Mario game because it's set in space and had new characters at the time. It just doesn't make sense.

You have an awful lot of misconceptions about Zelda lore. Some of the arguments you make are outright refuted in that very video. Like Wind Waker's lore not being consistent with other games. But it is a lot to keep track of. There are too many misconceptions to address in a YT reply, however I'll address one. The CD-i games weren't developed by Nintendo or with their permission. A residual license agreement loophole between Nintendo and Phillips (who Nintendo partnered with to make a CD attachment for the SNES that never went anywhere) allowed Phillips to make a few games from Nintendo's IPs for their own console. So they don't fit in the lore and Nintendo doesn't want anybody to acknowledge that they exist. So of course they're not considered canon or covered in the timeline.

Hmmm, from what I remember there's just one Vaati, one Demise, one Maladus (spirit tracks), one Bellum (phantom hourglass), one Majora's Mask and surprisingly 2 Ganondorfs (the original from OoT and the one that reborns with his memories in Four Swords Adventures). They all are reincarnations of Demise's curse. Ganondorf was born in the Ocarina of Time age. From that, since he gets the triforce of power he just keeps coming back or being resurrected by other minor antagonists, as you can see, in the wind waker timeline we don't see him ever again.
So yeah, no Vaati's son in the four swords, he is Vaati, like she says in the video.
The curse's villain get reincarnated multiple times throughout all those antagonists, but not every game. The same goes for the spirit of the hero and the descendant of Hylia.
23:36 maybe you missed the part where she says that the sages sealed demon ganon with the triforce in the sacred realm, which becomes the dark realm because ganon is in there with the triforce. That place fills with monsters that eventually monsters start to come out of the dark realm. So the hyrule kingdom is kinda okay.

That's exactly what they did. Breath of the Wild is the start of a reboot of the series. If you pay close attention, there are bits of various lore in Breath of the Wild based on stuff from all across the Zelda series, including all parts of the timeline. Plus, Breath of the Wild takes place after 10000 years of peace. Even if it's not a full-on hard reboot, 10000 years in-universe is long enough that it's a soft reboot at least. So on the topix of reincarnation with 1 exception only Zelda reincarnates, those of the Royal bloodline will occasionally be revorn as "human Hylia", blessed with foresight and divine magic. Zelda never dies, she loses a few times but always survives to continue the line.
Link isn't a reincarnation really. When evil pops up someone with true courage can inherite the Spirit of a Hero. 'Link' is mostly just IRL title for them all, presumably they all have unique names we just aren't told them. Best shown in Wind Waker where that Link is regularly insulted as just some random ass kid, but he's so couragous he gets the Spirit on his own.
Demise doesn't reincarnate at all, his curse just makes evil come forth. Ganon is the most recognizable one but any villain in presumably also part of the same curse. Now there is one time Ganondorf reincarnates but that was apparently due to his own magics as it works nothing like any other method of rebirth.

      You switched Zelda and Link.
Demise’s curse applies to “ the blood of the goddess” and “spirit of the hero”.
When people reincarnate, it’s the spirit that is born in a new body. Not blood.
Inheriting the spirit of the hero is reincarnation.
Bloodline is easy to get. It’s passed from parent to child. That’s not reincarnation, just genetics.
In BOTW, Zelda even mentions her mother had the sacred power. You can’t expect me to believe that there were two Zeldas reincarnated at once, as mother and daughter.
Only Skyward Zelda is a reincarnation. She is the reincarnation of Hylia. All other Zeldas are her descendants. That’s it.
