The Legend of Zelda is a timeline that, while Hyrule Historia details it for us, has largely become outdated since the introduction of Breath of the Wild, Age of Calamity, and Tears of the Kingdom. Even still, those games receive a lot of questioning as to when and where they take place in the current timeline, if they take place in it anywhere at all. There are plenty of theories out there, as the Zelda Series seems to spawn a lot of those. But right now, we want to take a stab at this timeline and attempt to figure it out.

I think its crucial to mention that ganondorf was sealed in the sacred realm, which is also where the skyloft and the triforce were sealed.
It's obvious to anyone who pays attention to Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom that the founding of Hyrule that takes place after Skyward Sword is not the same founding of Hyrule that takes place in Tears of the Kingdom's past. These are two separate events in an infinite recurrence.
They never founded Hyrule in Skyward Sword. They came to the ground, that's it.

ive got to say, the windwaker timeline feels like such a tragic timeline with such rich stories, i REALLY prefer the characterizations of link and zelda here because they have much more depth, with link not really wanting to do hero stuff, zelda changing her name to tetra and all and becoming a pirate, and ganondorf;s tragic wishes.
I see one hole in that branch theory... Zelda accidentally used the stone to travel back in time, but if that actually made a brach, Zelda wouldn't be in TOTK, yer she was as she used a stone to make herself immortal and have her light energy repair and upgrade the Master Sword over the eons... TOTK is BOTW link, but if there really was a timeline branch, then TOTK would not be BOTW link as they would be the same link but in two seperate timelines... There is also something else that happens... Like things suddenly became very different, yet still familiar... Almost like... There was no split?
In case anyone hasn't picked this up yet, there are two ways time travel effects time overall. The Ocarina back in OOT was used to send adults link back in time as a kid again so he can relive his childhood, but ultimately split reality as a result. This kind of time manipulation is called Multiverse Theory, an event where you travel back in time and, instead of events being changed, you actually distort reality and cause a split in Space-Time, the timeline you originally come from doesn't change, the alternate timeline contains the changed instead, leaving a lot of uncertainty.
There is another way time manipulation effects reality, it's as commonly used in media or games, and it's a weaker theory when it comes to IRL time travel... The only well known show that uses this effect is Yu-Gi-Oh!
In Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds, it was confirmed that their reality did nor work on Multiverse Theory, instead the show demonstrated multiple times that manipulating time in their way just rewrites history, overwriting time so the present can reflect the change in history.
I have a theory about this. I think time manipulation in the Legend of Zelda series can have BOTH outcomes. Depending on how you manipulate time, you will either split reality, or rewrite your present. If so, then tjat means Hylia's time power works differently that the Ocarina that was used much later, the music device wasn't made by Hylian but someone else who wasn't apaer of the Goddess clan, meaning they had to figure out how to manipulate time in their own way. Hylian, on the other hand, can use more power than the Ocarina. She seems to manipulate time far more efficiently, plus, the machines you use to manipulate time in SS were either built by Hylia, or had some Hylians make them with her supervision, giving them ways to time travel like how she does it...
The Ocarina, if anything, provably uses time travel in a more rudimentary way, being far less advanced as the blueprints to Hylia's Inventions were most likely lost to time. And since it's a more primitive tool, manipulating time was utilized differently, if anything, it was probably still an experimental device.
Zelda traveled back I time because she's a reincaeof Hylia, so she shares her powers, using the stone probably rewrote the events of BOTW. However, it seems she didn't change much, Sonia was still assassinated, the Imprisoning war still happened, Ganondorf was still sealed, the most she changed was the Sheikah's involvement in BOTW. The advanced Sheikah technology still existed, Guardian and the Four Divine Beasts were still used, but there was one thing that disappeared, the Sheikah Shrines were never invented, the Zonai shrines were made, instead. These Light Shrines replaced the Sheikah Shrines because of Zelda warning Rauru and interfearing in the Imprisoning war. Because of that, the Sheikah didn't see a need to make their own shrines.
This also explains the sudden change in the landscape, some things were altered and look different Than in BOTW, the exception being the chasms scattered around Hyrule. But the dongeons were one of the most notable changes that happened on the surface.
My head hurts from all this info but this makes sense
My theory is that BotW and TotK take place after all time lines because of all of the references to previous games in the Zelda canon. The only way that this could be possible is if the first Hyrule Warriors game is canon because that game combines all of the timelines into one timeline from which BotW and TotK could take place in.

I recall in an interview with Aonuma tht alludes tht all the LoZ entries up to BotW and TotK are canon in a sense.
Not a multiverse way.
But in a sense tht all entries are Legends and Myths passed down from word of mouth over generations.
Like what if the events of Twilight Princess are exaggerated than wht they actually are.
Like Midna herself and her clan never really got banished to the "Twilight realm". But got banished to a region outside of Hyrule.
Calamity Ganon came into the picture during tht time and Midna helped Link and Zelda of tht time period.
Yea, Its pretty clear now, despite what Rauru said, He might have been the founder of His kingdom, but he didn't found the first kingdom. Perhaps it's more accurate to say he's the first king of a 'Remerged Timeline'. Something happened before his time to remerge the timeline, and He founded a new Kingdom in that chaos. Everything points more to that now. So, he was right... from a certain point of view, but not accurate in the grander scheme of things. But there's a mountain of evidence and lore that says Rauru's kingdom does not follow Skyward Sword. There's a theory out there that suggests a 3rd game is coming as BotW, TotK and a 3rd game are a retelling of ZeldaI, ZeldaII, and LttP. A larger, master cycle of time that's repeating, so, it's a 'soft reboot' but also not at the same time, it's linear to the existing games, but way, way at the end. It's the only thing that makes sense anymore.

So Hyrule Warriors, at least the 1st one tht came out on Wii U, isnt really acknowledged as canon and just for theory crafting.
I would like to point out that the adult timeline is where Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks take place. Also, the downfall timeline is where a link to the Past, the Oracle games, Link's Awakening, Zelda 1, Adventure of Link, A Link Between Worlds and Triforce Heroes all take place
I will like to add that there is a LOT of things stated in this video that are just not lore accurate. On top of everything mentioned above, there's also a reference to "Four Swords Adventures was only for the GameBoy" which is inaccurate. FSA was for the Gamecube, making it the last CONSOLE game in the Child Timeline.

Great video! My theory about botw and totk is that all three timelines converge at the end, and the kingdom eventually collapses. Then, the zonai descend and found hyrule as seen in totk's memories. Then botw and the rest of totk take place. If totk's past took place after skyward sword, then why would there be rito and then no rito and then back again when wind waker takes place? Also molduga are seen in the memories and totk and botw. These are the only times you see those creatures in the timeline. You can't go from molduga, then none, and then reappearing again. I hope my reasoning on my theory makes somewhat sense.

There is a incongruence, because all the races on BOTW and TOTK are evolutions of the other existents on the other games, so those games are after all the other games. This would be a merged timeline, with all the new and old Races.
The age of calamity, BotW, and TotK take place not in a separate timeline but TotK is the end and beginning of the Zelda timeline. Princess Zelda goes back in time and sets the stage for everything after, but TotK is the last game in the series chronologically. Because King Roham (spell his name in the reply section) is labeled as the “last king of hyrule,” and TotK takes place afterward, these 3 games are the last of the timeline (but Age of Calamity takes place on a parallel timeline to 100 years before BotW)
He said "Last King of Hyrule" because Hyrule was destroyed by Ganon.

I always subscribed to the idea that there’s some sort of multiverse collision that results in the three timelines merging together resulting in the world of BOTW and TOTK
If rauru was actually the first king of hyrule that wouldn't make sense. The reason why is because if ganondorf was trapped underground right after ss to totk why are there other reincarnations of demises hatred like oot ganondorfs different timeline varients or other ganons if totk ganondorf is still alive. The most logical timeline placement for the pre story of totk to be before botw and right after the previous games of every timeline before botw. I believe hyrules history was just loss and that would explain rauru is the first king of hyrule of his knowledge and he had no clue of what the triforce or master sword was they maybe just decided to call the land hyrule again due to the ruins left of the previous kingdom such as the springs of courage, wisdom, and power since they all have the symbol of hyrule labeled on them.
Yea I was just thinking about that. A new gerudo male cannot be born until the previous one has died so if ganondorf is just sealed underneath Hyrule how could the oot ganondorf be born?

In both the adult timeline and the fallen hero timeline, hyrule ceased to be by their respective ends. Theoretically, Queen Sonia and King Raru could be the first King and Queen of the NEW hyrule, since botw and tears of the kingdom takes place thousands upon thousands of years after all timelines, they may have heard legends about an ancient forgotten kingdom and decided to start their new monarchy in the land where the legends took place.
It's not a perfect solution but it could work, I guess
This Timeline is speculative, nothing official has been stated/released from Nintendo aside from being told that Breath of the wild takes place at the end of the Timeline, it is left to assume that there may of been some catastrophic event that wiped out Hyrule to the point where the past kingdom was forgotten and left in legends.

A common theory is that totk is a closed timeline loop like skyward sword. Gannondorf knows about Link and the master sword due to raru telling him about Link in the past. He also knows about Zelda cause he remembers her from the imprisoning war. This leads it to be a closed timeline and not a timeline split.
Exactly it's another loop but then that would place it in future given fact that zonai are not in hyrule or rather world that would become Hyrule as long as humans so... Although even if raru slipped and told ganondorf too much, he'd have figured it out anyway because cyclical plot reasons
O-kay, so I decided to educate myself in Zelda games, as one does. And I find it way too funny that at some point I lost count of how many times Zelda was kidnapped… honestly let’s kidnap Link for a change🤣

Here's one of my theories, similar to the one in the video:
The founding of Hyrule was by the Zonai, and the founding scenes in TOTK should mainly happen in the era of prosperity.
From the founding, there can be a timeline split here.
If Ganondorf manages to get Sonia's stone, then BOTW and TOTK would happen as the video described in the beginning.
If not, then from the founding of Hyrule the timeline can go straight to the era of chaos. From there, having BOTW and TOTK happen in the child timeline split also sounds good.
I also remember that for ALTTP instead of calling the war the Imprisoning War, some people call it the Sealing War, which can be helpful to stop confusion.
I still consider Link's Awakening to occur after the Oracle games, here's why:
The main village in Link's Awakening, Mabe Village's theme sounds similar to the Horon Village theme in Oracle of Seasons.
Marin, closely resembles Malon from Oracle of Seasons.
Madam MeowMeow and BowWow in Link's Awakening somewhat resemble Mamamu Yan and her dog in Oracle of Ages.
I think from Labrynna, Link travel's by boat back to Hyrule, but encounters a storm, making the events of Link's Awakening come into play.

My idea is that hundreds of thousands (millions?) of years after the utter destruction of the original Hyrule (the ones from all the other games), with all but a few symbols and structures being left behind, the kingdom was barren: until the Zonai descended from the clouds, in the leftovers of Skyloft (/ the ooccoo kingdom place?). They forged the 'New' Kingdom of Hyrule (or just the Kingdom of Hyrule), and then the events of TotK, BotW, and Age of Calamity take place (Age of Calamity being in a timeline split)

I believe, or like to believe, that there are events that converge all three timelines (making the timelines shapes like a rupee or a triangle) and that all of the wilds timeline events happen after that convergence. In my theory, some event happens that forces a reset on the lands in order to converge the threads of time, the zonai are created and the gods transform the completed triforce into the stones of power, and the golden goddesses become zonai, and eventually swallow a stone of power each in order to watch over their lands and prevent that much power from being available to the reincarnations of demise ever again.
I wish I had time to write a fanfic.
The Wind Waker takes place in the Adult Timeline, not the Fallen Hero Timeline. Its fun to have theories but that has been confirmed by Nintendo in Hyrule Historia for over a decade.
I don’t think that there was a timeline spilt when Zelda went back as ganondorf knew who Zelda was as he had seen her in the past
I do stick to re-establishment theory since it covers most bases and due to the very cyclic nature of the games. I have a personal joke of the Golden Goddesses sitting at a table, naming themes, placing bets, and rolling the dice to see what happens _this_ time.

Honestly. The imprisoning war takes place 10,000 years before age of calamity, then another 100 years takes place for breath of the wild, then another 9 after that for totk,
Meaning all the respective time lines could have very much happened, and been long forgotten over 2000 years let alone 10000. I think breath of the wild is the story of all these timeliness, being strung 1 by one other thousands of years. Since hyrules founding.
It would explain why the armors are in totk and why we have seen multiple types of the same species, and them evolve and change over the years

I don't think the founding of Hyrule in TOTK was before Ocarina of Time based on the fact that there hasn't been a male Gerudo born since Ganondorf was sealed.
There have been multiple iterations of Hyrule, and it might be the founding of that iteration.
Also, the Rito had their origin in Windwaker and didn't exist before then.
I've got a theory I need to look into more, but that Skyward Sword has a timeline split like Ocarina of Time. The split happens when Ghirahim pulls Zelda into the past and brings back Demise after The Imprisoned was defeated in the future.
This split is where BotW and TotK take place leaving it separate from the known timeline

The mural might be depicting the war with demise and The Goddess Hylia that happened before skyward sword and not actually a battle with a Zelda and link. It make sense why the ancient hero looks different as this was before the first link in the skyward sword and why the ancient technology is so advanced.
I think a really challenge would be too try and fit Hyrule Warriors and Age of Calamity stories into this as well

I think BotW and TotK are set after the 3 timelines merge. One way this could have happened is that OoT is repeated after the first two timelines (the doom timeline and the children's timeline, the order doesn't matter). After the 3rd Oot, the version of Hyrule from BotW follows the adult timeline, leading to the destruction of Hyrule and the creation of new Hyrule shown in Spirit Tracks.
After the Great Sea from Wind Waker disappeared, the people who didn't make their way to the new Hyrule reclaimed the long lost land of the original Hyrule and were ruled by High Priests until the Sonai showed up and Rauru married Sonia, the ruling High Priestess at the time, and founded a third kingdom of Hyrule.
It could also be that the people from New Hyrule came back, but I think they stayed in New Hyrule and lived on in BotW and TotK as a second Hyrule without knowing of each others existence. New Hyrule is probably in a long period of peace because the hatred of Demise was locked away with TotK Ganondorf.

wind waker isn't a fallen hero timeline. It is the adult era when Ganondorf escapes from his seal, and since there is no hero because Zelda sent Link back in time at the end of Ocarina to relive his childhood, and Link creates a new timeline, so there is no hero to save Hyrule from Ganondorf. that is why the land is flooded.

I've always had a theory that once the triforce in all three timelines are fixed, the timeline merges into one would make sense united triforce united timeline
I honestly do believe that BOTW and TOTK is the aftermath of the joining of all the three timelines. It would be cool if there would be a game about that.
That's the thing I want dlc or gap games or at least extra cs in some kind of pack. The stuff that's mentioned but not played, as long as there's a hero they can do it. Like we never exactly played through demon war and heres my argument: while ss is a time loop, hylia still made what would become skyloft, so while even though girahim kidnaps Zelda and demise returns in past, it'd only change had demise won and some character made it to future and no matter what, skyloft still existed. So no matter the self time loop, ss only extends to a date post demon war. That and Zelda is hylia as a human, at least in ss. Which means prior she was goddess hylia. And because goddess hylia still had a hero well that's a useable gap era

Where I personally think the placement of BotW, AoC, and TotK is, it's obvious to me that it is outside of the main timeline.
Specifically, a new branch created by Link defeating Demise twice over.
During Skyward Sword, there are two time periods that are visited, and Demise is destroyed independently in both.
In the modern era, Link destroys Demise with the Triforce. Meanwhile, in the ancient era, Link destroys Demise with the Master Sword. This duality of destruction leads to a branch in the timeline as how can Demise be destroyed in the present when he was destroyed already in the past. it's not possible.
All games pre-BotW take place in the timeline set after the destruction of Demise with the Triforce, hence it's prominence in most of the games.
BotW, AoC, and TotK take place in the timeline set after the destruction of Demise with the Master Sword, and the lack of prominence of the Triforce in this timeline.
This also is important to note as there are parallels in the past of TotK that mirror events in OoT, such as the Fealty of Ganondorf to the King of Hyrule, and the Imprisoning War thereafter when Ganondorf betrays the King.
It's also possible that we can fix the "what if" scenario of the Downfall timeline by moving all those events into this new timeline, the Calamity Timeline. in NONE of the downfall era timeline games do you see the Gerudo male known as Ganondorf. you only see his Beastial form Ganon in one form or another. It is possible that all of these forms of "Ganon" are merely puppets of the sealed Ganondorf deep underground, which is why they are so easily brought back and destroyed time and time again.
Additionally, the Calamity in BotW is said to have "Given up on ressurection after many failed attempts"
This is my theory on how to fix the Zelda Timeline.
NOTE: based on existing canon, only one Male Gerudo can seemingly be alive at a time, and the ONLY other time we see a Ganondorf come AFTER a previous one is after that one died. it was previously once every 100 years, but since Ganondorf's lifespan has been extended in all timelines due to the influence of the Triforce, he often goes for several hundred years before being killed properly.

That is an interesting theory. I fix the "What If" problem by throwing them all into the Child Era after Ganon became enraged and sacrificed one form to become stronger.

omg this guy mistook the Adult timeline for the Fallen Hero one. Wind Waker happens in the Adult timeline where Link won and, after he is sent to the past, Ganondorf returns AND THEN the Godesses flood the land. The Fallen Hero Timeline leads to other games and *none of them are Wind Waker*. I don't know about you but I find this outrageous
My theory is that since botw and totk is so far in the future form all the other games that the government shattered and rareu reestablished hyrule as it's 'first' king and that it is still ahead of all the games OR that sonia is the great gandauder of ss link and zelda

The fallen timeline is the one where the hero of time loses and the imprisoning war takes place, eventually leading to the original games.
The adult timeline is the world left behind after link goes back to the past and leads to the events of windwaker

I dont think historia is entirely obsolete as one nintendo never claimed that. 2 in breath and tears they said they want fans to speculate and they wont confirm one theory or other. But you can make all games fit together if choose. Im sorry but i think dev interviews and originol content creator statements matter. Also hyrule warriors isnt cannon and even if it were its just a spinoff with no bearing on overarching serries because in each new cannon game they keep sealing demons

Why do people take the “divine prank” as meaning a literal prank? I don’t think the sages meant it as the goddesses playing an actual prank when they said it. Instead I think it’s used as hyperbole because if you put yourself in their situation, they’re about to execute this horrible criminal who is quite possibly the worst person in the world but somehow he possesses the triforce of power as he most embodies that virtue. So it’s like the sages are saying hold up where are the hidden cameras surely this has got to be a joke. Thoughts?

I hate botw and totk because we do not know which order they are supposed to be in. One would assume botw comes before totk because of the destroyed rubble and terry town, but then things like the master sword being just as strong in botw and ancient technology not existing yet that makes it confusing as to who the heck is supposed to be first

I definitely like the idea that BoTW and TOTK would exist in the Skyward Sword-Ocarina of Time-Twilight Princess line as they feel most similar to each other.
Though what if Breath of the Wild is chronologically first, TOTK second, and Skyward Sword third? And the the timeline proceeds from there?

Interesting enough, SS, BOTW AND TOTK draw its story from every proviso is Zelda game. It could be dismissed so far into the future (New Era) or just a new timeline/Reboot.
