Funny, fun, silly 1939 comedy - "Never Say Die" - with Bob Hope, Martha Raye, Andy Devine

- This is one of my favorite Bob Hope comedies, and also starred Martha Raye, who was really in sync with his easy-going spontaneous acting style.
The screenplay has a foolproof concept - a hypochondriac millionaire (Hope) gets test results from a dog that erroneously tells him he only has a month to live - multiplied by the fact that one of the screenwriters was Preston Sturges.
It’s that ilk of silly 1930s comedy that didn’t take itself too seriously, and wasn’t designed as an “A-list” movie for the ages - which is why it's so lighthearted and silly - but fun! BUT it has excellent pedigree, and is fun from beginning to end. This is one of those films that you sense that all the actors - Hope, Raye, Andy Devine, Gale Sondergaard, Alan Mobray - all enjoyed themselves.
It was originally supposed to star Jack Benny with an unknown actress - and it's one of those cases that you can't imagine anyone but Bob and Martha, who bring their total madcap silliness, abetted by Andy Devine and company in fine form.

Colonel Martha Raye is buried in the Special Forces part of the cemetery at Fort Bragg, now called Fort Liberty, NC.
I met Martha Rae on a hill in Vietnam! She was a patriot! USO
That's what I call good clean comedy , few jokes at the expense of no one. I'm glad I found bob hope again. I found him long long ago. I found and lost him ,found him lost him , he was a natural high class comedian.
One of the best comedies I have seen. Clean, subtle and funny. Had me in stitches.
I remember, as a small child over 70 years ago, meeting Martha Raye at a train station with my mother and father, who was a friend of hers. She was so kind and pleased to see us. She died in a Philadelphia hospital many years ago.
Thanks for sharing. Wow.
And they have a statue of her at Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville , N.C. for the work she did with the U.S.O.
and was also a medic with the National Guard .
Thanks,for your comment,..It,is,evident.and,u,can,see.that,Martha,was,an,exceptional,person.and,genuine.besides,likeable,and,beautiful.woman.

Martha Rae was always a favorite actress of mine. She was always
so funny and kind.❤
So funny. Delivery by Bob Hope and Martha Ray on point. Fan of BH since I was a young child in the 70s. One liners are superb. Keeps you smiling. Never seen MR in old films before. She is beautiful and talented. Wonderful hickledee pickaldee story of comedy romance, wealth, and a hypochondriac. Really cheered me up. BH never ceases to please. Old movies are the best - no CGI, OTT action, sex or violence etc. Just good old, wholesome fun, and a laugh. The poetic ending with its conudrum of words in a pistol shootout is crackalackingly funny! Thank you ❤
Some of my old favorites were the Road movies with Bob, Hope and Bing Crosby
The bow and punch was so good! What a classic movie!
I didn't care for the subtitles, but the movie was good. Bob Hope rarely disappoints.
ooooh, i love Monty Wooley!
Loved this movie!! It was great to see a young Bob Hope and Martha Raye. The old movies are so wonderful.
Great fun! Really improbable, but very appropriate, given the time that the movie was made.
The pellet with the poison is in the flagon with the dragon, The Court Jester with Danny Kaye.
Now that's a good comedy movie
Considering it is almost 100 y.o., it's a fine movie.
I love this movie! I think Bob Hope is my all time favorite...his timing and physical comedy are just so entertaining.
Thanks for the Memories Mr Hope & the great shows for the Troops!
Very good, actors of course, but beautiful, and nice, and smart, Martha Raye..
My buddy Fred was recovering from surgery and a Bob Hope movie came on,. Poor Fred was chuckling and cussing at Bob Hope all at the same time. " It hurts to laugh, But I can't stop laughing "
"There's a cross on the muzzle of the pistol with the bullet and a nick on the handle of the pistol with the blank..." such a funny brain/tongue twister. That was comedic genius. LOL.
I wonder if the writer of this script also worked on Danny Kaye’s COURT JESTER? Funny lines!
I agree - sounds just like a Danny Kaye bit. Or maybe Danny Kaye sounded like a Bob Hope bit?
Great movie, the last part reminded me of a scene from "The court jester"with Danny Kaye, very funny, thank you
I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Martha Raye and this movie shows how lovely she can be even when placed in a comedic role

@@HeathCliffrothman thank you for uploading this, as a child I'd watch these old movies as a teen I'd would rather watch these even older movies and now >>> the story line, the acting, the timing, ... Thanks again.
@@tommas2674 It may be hard for me to articulate, but sometimes I need to escape into the past, and nothing to do with my current reality or life, and old movies - primarily the talented ones and the comforting ones - or one in the same! - take me away to another dimension. And other times, I need something fairly contemporary. I need my current reality and the world expressed on screen, in humanistic ways. So it depends. But I need these movies, which are primary to my life, the same as I (now) need classic radio. I listen to the Suspense series, and the Lux Radio Theatre movies I'm interested in, and I love that, too. I listen to it every night when I'm cooking.
@@HeathCliffrothman Nice. I came upon a radio show program and thoroughly enjoyed it but seem to have lost it. Thanks for reminding me to search for it. I escape.
She was a real hot sprocket! Love her!
Beautiful old film🤩 great familiar faces, from 60 & 70'sTV. Thanks for posting
This movie is hilarious and I Loved It❤!!!!
Two remarkable comedians with excellent foils and just the kind of thing we need to be watching in this current social environment laughter is healing mentally physically and emotionally😊
I love all old movies. Especially The Bob Hope ones.
When i watch these it hits me in several ways: the story and characters, then the background- whats there or not ( no tv or cell or princess phone still mostly steam locos nice trains small planes and furniture (radios wall paper sofa dresses etc of my home az a boy in late 40's. Then it hits me that my family, mom dad uncles grand parents likely saw the film when new. Like a tome machine and to kind of better know my elder folks now gone. A treasure.

The BEAR'S walk is so funny how he comes 'round tha corner!
Cool I love this movie.
1939 Is the year of the most 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ movies In USA 🇺🇸 History ... ✅ ...
Golden age of U.S. cinema.
Incomparable Bob Hope... greatest comedian of all times!
What a grand movie, throughly enjoyed this one, a shame cinema today can't hold to this fine standard.
Tissue-thin plot, but a diverting movie that you don't need to concentrate on. I think of Martha Raye as a ham, but Bob Hope does so well with his comedic timing that he always makes me laugh. And the film is in delicious black and white.
Bob Hope and Martha Reye shine in this movie! A great movie with a fabulous cast. 😄
What a funny film! Andy Devine great character actor! And Martha Raye a truly great comedian. Bob Hope at his best! Loved this great classic from way, way back when Hollywood was golden and grand and great!!!
My great-great uncle, Charles Cali "Charlie Cooley" was a friend of Mr. Hope. Bob Hope Lived to 100. A great fellow. Never be another like him.
“I forgot to shake the bottle” **shakes body** 😂😂😂
Love Bob Hope and Martha. They were so funny.. both intertained our troops. Martha is buried in Arlington cemetery.bthey were great together. May they rest in peace.
Hello Rita
If Bob Hope had been a woman he would have been Martha Raye. I guess this is why they co-starred in several movies. And when Bob Hope got his own TV show, Martha was one of his guests. Thanks for uploading!
Thank you
Pretty good movie. I liked it.
Such wit and whimsey. A sheer delight
A movie about a man who supposedly is sickly and believes he will die soon, despite his doctor telling him he's as healthy as a fire horse. Even funnier watching it as the "doctor" was quite right. Hope lived to be 100 years old!
Great to see Martha Rae "all prettied up" instead of sloppy, dumb-acting, or coarse. 👏👍😃
It Was His Gentlemans Gentleman Who Said He Was "Healthy As A Firehorse"... No Disrespect Intended...☆☆*
😂😂😂😂. Very funny! Love those kind of movies! Good memories! 😂❤️👍
The duel scene reminds me of the scene in the Court Jester, when Danny Kaye was going to fight the Black Knight.
Love Bob.
" Send me no Flowers" ....Rock Hudson and Doris Day.
Thank you for sharing this with us all it was fun to watch. Blessing, Shou Shou
Hilarious movie. Loved the duel scene. Great cast. Love these mad cap comedies of the 30's.👍👍👍👍
Very cute movie. First time I've heard of it. Bob Hope was always a fav as was Martha Rae
🤣 I haven't laughed that hard in I don't know when 😂👍
One thing you can always rely on for movies made before 1950 is, they will be clean, funny, wholesome and well developed plot wise.
Had to come back for another view. Still fun and time-well spent. Mark of a Good picture.
They don't make 'em like this anymore! Bravo!
Did anyone catch the Constantina player? He was Hans Conried who famously played Uncle Tanoose in the Make Room for Daddy. Love how young Bob Hope was in this movie also Martha Raye. I watched this movie years ago, little did I know I would live in a city where Andy Divine has a street named after him.
Hello adriane
Funny! I was JUST thinking that ..lol. i couldn't remember his name, just Conrad something & Talusa something. Lol.
JUST then, i see your post. Too funny. He also played "Wrong-Way Fenway" on a Gilligan's Island episode. 🏝

A very funny film with the greatness of Bob Hope, his timeless humour wins every time. So pleased I decided to watch this film, lots of chuckles. Thank you for sharing this film .
An absolute gem! Definitely my favorite Bob Hope movie I've seen so far, I can't stop re-watching it and laughing every time, such a fun and sweet watch - Thank you so much for sharing!
What a great drinking movie !!!
An enjoyable Bob Hope film plus Gale Sondergard thans for posting.
Bob hope is very funny
Monty Wooley also such a great character actor!
He was a member of the Algonquin Roundtable. What it must have been like to sit in on those lunches!
What a gem of a movie this is! Terrific cast and just a delight to watch.Thank You so much for sharing it!!!

Don't make them like this anymore.
A lost treasure. I laughed from beginning to end. Hope and Ray were great together. Thanks for this.

OMG !!! I LOVE YOU 😘 😘😘😘😘 and I just LOVE this movie.... I have the DVD and my player isn’t working.... I kept praying this movie got on CZcams for years and U have answered my prayers...now I can watch it when I travel since I am a flight attendant and ANY laughs at this time is greatly appreciated and this movie is a laugh a minute.... especially when Bob is teaching Andy Devine how to kiss Martha 😂😂😂😂😂. My favorite part was listening to Andy Devine snore. He sounds like Donald Duck. Hilarious.
The dual was fantastic I couldn't stop laughing!
It really is funny.
Didn't realise that the famous pestle sequence from The Court Jester came from this film. I loved the 'nick on the muzzle' sequence
Mark Sweet ......I got it right away since I saw this movie first....
@@marybranicki3354 I had never see this film before but have seen The Court Jester three times. I think the Court Jester is the better film but did still enjoy this one and think the sequence in question is better in this movie
I saw this a long time after I had seen the court jester several times. But the court jester really made it famous.
That's right. Funny in both movies.
Apparently the memory bit was a standard in vaudeville days. It was around long before the moves.
Thanks for posting. Fun movie. Bob Hope so young, and Martha Raye such a dish.
We will never have to fake being sick, especially when we crack up following this clever millionaire, beautiful and down to earth heroine realizing how they can be together, even though her beetle taking care of first love is definitely nearby.🎯🤣🤒💵💍🎥💗🌅 Stay safe everyone!
That whole bit about the pistols sounds like something out of a Danny Kaye movie about "the pellet with the poison...."
You're right. This one must have inspired the other
One of the funniest Bob Hope movies ever. Thanks for the
upload
It would be so worthwhile to have a Preston Sturgess channel.
Sturges!
So this is where they got the “pellet of poison’s in the vessel with the pestle” bit in “The Court Jester.”
Anna Ferrara Funnnist skit we all understood, and loved, since childhood, when it was first on the big screen. Good clean humour.
I recognized that bit. Did Danny Kaye steal it or did the writers, ha ha. Love the Court Jester 💕
Also, Ensign Parker sleeping with his father-in-law at the outpost during the Japanese invasion on McHale's Navy
Actually it probably goes back to at least vaudeville in one form or another. I saw a take on it in an East Side Kids movie just the other night.
It turned up in one of Bob's Paleface films. He leans to the left but shoots with his right etc
Martha Raye and Bob Hope make a great comedy couple on screen, or comedy duo in general. I loved them in this and their other movie “Give me a Sailor”.
Thank you for that- I was wondering if they were in any other movies together.
Try the Big broadcast 0f 1938
Their also in College Swing.
College Swing Was Another One...☆☆*
One of the best Bob Hope movies!
To ME.... the BEST 😆😂🤣
A marvelous piece of fluff....
Sig Rumon, the hotel manager, was an actor in Germany who escaped to America because he hated Hitler. He many many movies in the role of funny Nazis because he was against. His most famous role was Colonel Earhardt in Jack Benny's classic movie "To Be or Not To Be!'
Ken Owens “...so they call you Concentration Camp Erhardt?”
He also worked with Groucho and Garbo!
Lovely funny man
Bob Hope always delivers! Thanks 😊
Duel scene is hilarious!!
Alan Mowbray would play funny butlers in other filns.

This is a very small point but look at the blond actress sitting at the switchboard at 45:22. She is really enjoying her small role!
9stars thank you for the movie
Thanks for sharing!!!
Cool😂👌👍🎉
The duel scene reminds me of a particular fight in Daye Kaye's The Court Jester
martha ray was great, good movie.
I have this movie and it is great
Hello, Pam,
How are you doing today?
Martha Raye!! Love her.
Superb photography, film quality, clarity and resolution considering That this movie was filmed in 1939. Love that Hope, Martha, and Monty Woolley is a pleasant surprise.
Delightful all the way!
Great comedy by two great comedians, Bob Hope and Martha Raye. Loved it! Thanks!
Yes, it also reminded me of the The Court Jester, 1955. Here is the script. The clip of the film is also available on CZcams.
Hawkins: I've got it! I've got it! The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true! Right?
Griselda: Right. But there's been a change: they broke the chalice from the palace!
Hawkins: They *broke* the chalice from the palace?
Griselda: And replaced it with a flagon.
Hawkins: A flagon...?
Griselda: With the figure of a dragon.
Hawkins: Flagon with a dragon.
Griselda: Right.
Hawkins: But did you put the pellet with the poison in the vessel with the pestle?
Griselda: No! The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon! The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true!
Hawkins: The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon; the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true.
Griselda: Just remember that.
Cute!!! Really cute!!!
I saw the complaints about the subtitles-I am hard of hearing and enjoyed them- bob hope. Martha raye, Andy Devine, gale sondergaafd and Alan mowbray made a good comedy in this flick- the gun duel inthe movie was the funniest part of it- hope and raye made a great 👍 duo in this and other films! 🎥 I ll liked Monty Woolley as the doctor who examines Mr hope! Great show! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤
Very funny movie, glad I watched it.
Never saw this move before great cast great movie 🍿 😂😂😂😂😂😂 👍🏴
Preston Sturges, you can't lose with that in the mix
