Dan's such a relaxed and honest guy with great knowledge. Great to have him on the channel
FACTS
“This probably looks like a lot more (sealant) on camera than it actually is, because it always does. And someone’s going to say I use too much sealer… but that’s fine cause I don’t care” 😂 👍 Dan = legend
Not gunna lie Dan is the content i subbed for. Glad he is back!
Dan is obviously a great mechanic/technician that’s had some excellent experience and is very good at explaining what he is doing and his methods and reasoning. As an old school mechanic myself I can not fault his workmanship, methods or how he explains how and why! Faultless video clip and runs rings around a lot of uTube mechanics or so called mechanics.
He should definitely be a mechanic teacher. These easy to learn instructions etc by him are perfect.
Glad Dan is back 👍🏼
Good to be back 👍
So good to have Dan back.
Good to see you back Dan!
So so happy to see Dan back again! Hopefully with Covid lockdowns being in the past you boys can get some trips together!
Really appreciate the transfer of knowledge and expertise Dan!
Thanks Breno, I hope so too!
Its great to watch Dan and his projects. He takes great time to do things right, knows his sh#t and takes pride in his work. I just rebuits my own motor recently and he seems like a bloke that I could work with. Great vid.
Great work Dan
Good stuff Dan, good to see ya smile again 😂
Thanks mate 🤙
Good to see Dan again!
Always impressed with your knowledge and the methodical way you go about things Dan. Love your work 👍👍👍
Well presented mate. I thought it was Toby Keith rebuilding engines!! Youve got a catchy relaxed style. Top stuff
Thanks mate, that’s what I was going for. 😂
Love your tutorials. Thorough explanation with a clear demonstration of true knowledge and grasp of the fundamentals
I have learned so much from the lads, particularly Dan over the last 18months or so that I have followed this channel.
Thank you so much guys.
Sweet been waiting for update .. thanks boys. Love the knowledge of Dan learned good tips had to do head soon on my patrol Rd28
nice exhaust sound! like a teenage engine going into its prime
really enjoyed watching this, great work getting it up and running...
Another excellent video!!! Good work 👍🏽💪🏽
Craftsman at work. Pleasure to watch the big fella work. Ideally fit a set of extractors and exhaust to compliment the cam and comp upgrade. nice work champion.
These symptoms sound so much like what's going on with my Land Rover Discovery. Any serious uphill load, and it overheats and begins puking coolant, but I can do 120 miles or so on the flat, and it's fine. Been driving me nuts. Finally bought a head gasket set and some ARP studs, and going to see what I find when I disassemble it.
This bloke is a legend. Speaks sense, not youtube garbage.
Great detail and explanations!
IT EVEN STUMPED DAN!! No Way
Awesome job mate. Glad to see you did the job properly & replaced all the bolt on bits while you had it apart. Love the 4.2 petrol but not the cost to run the bastards 😂😂
Great work, good to see you again...
I'm at the point where I can't stand other 4x4 channels, u lads are just a couple of young blokes doing normal stuff with your vehicles, love the content
Fantastic detailed vid. As per usual the Aussie Arvo guys have shown how young guys can do quality work to there 4wd's. Keep up the good work
Good to see you're back..More, more, more to come from you.... hopefully.
Great job buddy
Sensible and thorough as usual Dan. well done mate.
great video Dan 🛻🤙😎 very knowledgeable and interesting to watch! well done !
Awesome episode guys 👍
Good seeing old mates face again.
Dan sure knows his stuff. Bloody awesome video boys! Loved it.
Dan skills are amazing. What a legend.
Great video! Thank you.😊
I love the way you go about it Dan. I’m fixing up my TB42 GQ as well so it’s been great to see you fixing it up. Love the mechanical content as well as the touring vids. Keep up the awesome content boys.
Brilliant vid Dan.. keep up the good work lads 🤙🏽🤙🏽
pumped to see dan back for a video, not that I'm getting sick of you patty. The different faces of the whole aussie arvo crew really gave it a wholesome good mates vibe. Keep up the great work men.
Good to see u back Dan. I don’t do instagram or anything, so I’d been wondering where u had been.
As always great content, excellent info and a grouse attitude! U da man Dan.
Cheers mate🍺
Excellent video mate, well done!
Dan your a legend,I enjoy your videos , thankyou cheers 😊👍
Good to see Dan back 👍🏾😁
Good to see you back. You certainly opened a can of worms this time around!
Hopefully you can have smooth sailing for a while now - you deserve it after putting in the hard yards!
More Dan 👍
Great video guys 👍
Great to see you back in front of the camera mate. Sorry it was for the wrong (costly) reasons. Hope it all goes well for you now. Cheers for the update mate. 👍
Love that GQ... Great explanation of the complexity regarding cylinder head/ camshaft issues, etc... Hope she goes for another 400000 klms👍👍
Great work Dan, she is going to go for another 400,000 now! really good to see you back
Good to see Dan back.
I feel your pain, I just went through the same thing on my daily but it was worth it since I went on a 10,000 km trip without issue.
Absolute legend. Dan is a chill bloke love watching all content from this channel but Dan has to be my favourite. Always learning something from the big man.
Thanks mate 👍
glad to see dan back, there is only so much "woffling on" you can put up with listening to patrick (simplify it pat).
In nz we get those air boxes in gq safari that's why they fit.
Good to know thanks man 👍
Dan is the MAN! Great to have you back Dan. Maybe just pipe in now and then - I think we all love to hear your words of wisdom, honesty and brute force logic.
I for one listen intently and take heed. You are the oracle of the Aussie Arvos mob.
"I expect maybe 63.5kW at the wheels". I don't know - you haven't done anything for flow, so maybe, but if you are getting higher torque lower down that should mean you get to 63.5kW sooner in the rev range, so, you should expect a higher peak power? Fingers crossed.
Good work mate
Totally understand the desire to do things properly so you know you can rely on the car. I’ve got a hj75 cruiser and I bought it to start camping and going on trips. I’ve just finished doing rear axle bearings, axle seals, bearing seals, wheels cylinders and drums/shoes. But I got carried away and pulled the backing plates of, wire wheeled them, painted them… because I couldn’t bear to do all that work and fit new parts to dusty old mounting surfaces. While I’ve got these things apart, it’s a small bit of extra time and effort to really make it look a million bucks.
My 89Maverick SWB (491xxxkm) has undergone the same amount of treatment under the hood and She rips!!!
Great video, learnt heaps👌
Well done great to see your work and tips thank you
Once you start better off rip it out rebuild it all stronger and a small turbo on it low boost lumpy cam and bang all sweet.
I had a similar thing with a td42 then ended lifting the lid off it when towing. I pulled it apart then ended up whole engine out fully rebuilt by southern engines as I didn’t have time unfortunately.
Set it up for boost and now runs a healthy 300 hp at flywheel at 24 pound.
Great job.
picked up a 89 patrol this week, partially modified, tb42, new head, rebuild trans, shonkin wiring for 12v system (will redo properly) sitting on 33 muddies, little rust in the roof, for $7k, only reason i even considered the 89 patrol was because of this patrol here on aussie arvo.
Love it Dan!!
love your work.
Rookie error Dan, that engine mount bolt was loose to allow for expansion as the mount heats up! 😂
Good to see an episode with Dan 😤
I had this problem with a 1990 patrol (125,000 km), new lifters and cam. I believe back in the day there was a problem with the lifters which were replaced under warranty. Great video mate!
Good on you well done. My MQ ute hasn't been any trouble for2o yrs you will never wear the wagon out. Happy travels
Good decision to check it all while the head is already out and not re-use any critical parts. Its so good to have knowledge & skills, plus the correct tools. Nice work. Your GQ is looking sweet👍👍
Thanks mate 👍
Yessss Dan is back
Good on ya bro much love from nz 🤙
When i clean top of blocks i use a vaccum cleaner right next to the blade then a block with sandpaper. Ill get rid of that and use the sharpening stone! Thanks for the idea!
Good to see Dan back - he needs his own channel!
Thanks mate.
Got a channel with one video on it 😂, just don’t have the time or skills to edit.
great video catch up 👍
Nice work mate 👍🏼
Great video as always. I reckon some gas struts on your bonnet should be the next mod!
I worked at Nissan New Zealand when the Y60 was a current model. The cam and follower issue you found was a very common problem with the TB42 engine. I replaced god knows how many under warranty.
Quality content fellas
Dan's Back
Great to have the red patrol back
LPG runs hotter? Could be the head had issues? Wonder why it had a head so early. The TB42 is very robust usually. Very clean vehicle, looks great on those wheels.
Heads up on the timing chain marks, a couple years ago I did a full top end on a 2005 Suzuki XL7 after the owner let the chain go till it derailed bent all 12 exhaust vales, I was all done went to start it and it would try but just couldn't quite go, did a bunch of testing and made the call to pull the timing cover off and look, low and behold the NEW chain had the marks in the wrong places! So hang on to your old chain and check them against the new ones! could have been real ugly but I got lucky.
Nothing wrong with preventative maintenance that's for sure! Done my injectors on my cruiser at 200,000 just because I was there doing the rocker cover gasket that was leaking. Wasn't necessary but they're now 200k fresher👍great video, nice to see specs were followed and not the usual youtuber ugga duggaering things back on.
That’s the way, cheers mate 👍
LoL saw Dan down at Patrol-a-part the other day. Probs getting parts for the old TB bahaha
I have to ask, did the discussion of turbocharging it come to mind while everything was off? Even a blow through carb setup? Beautifully done mate Dan’s attention to detail is always next level.
I reckon James would of had to tried to convince Dan
My tb's gas had a collar that sat between the carby and the stock airbox!
Not a fan of the old kettles (TB or TD) but it was very refreshing to watch this video when it was genuine and not a flog-fest of BS. That being said, very surprised that a transplant donk wasn't sourced and dropped in rather than keeping the fuel sucker.
Really is grandpa spec with the tennis ball on the tow ball
Great video. Look forward to seeing more of the Patrol.
Awesome job you must be a diesel mechanic and you still have hone marks in the cylinders and yes the block deck is very important and the cam and head machining is cheap horsepower top job and yes degreaser and pressure washers do damage cheers
Hey mate, love your content and love the fact you guys always have a go but after 40 years of engine building theres a couple things you really need to know.
Never, EVER, use an abrasive on an assembled block. This puts very fine grinding grit into the bores and can quickly cause damage. You wont see it and it will cause accelerated wear and damage.
Never, EVER, used compressed air to clean debris out of the cylinders. This forces grit and other small particles between the piston and bore that you then cannot remove and guaranteed to cause damage and wear to bores, rings and pistons.
When the head is off, cover with plastic or glad wrap, not rags, as they drop a lot of lint and debris. Cleanliness is paramount in long life of you engine.
Always use a vacuum cleaner to get any debris out of the cylinders.
Hope this helps
Sooooo how do you suggest cleaning a block surface when doing a head?
Totally similar issue with a Subaru liberty 90.
Miss you man
Fuck yeah Dan is back.👍 Love this bloke!
enjoy Dan vids, easy fix mate, RB30 boosted! 8-D
Mate i would've got ya head and manifolds match ported too makes big difference
Hey Dan you should do a distributor timing video to go with this :).
Comon Dan ,, TB42 has to have a snail on it :)
Great vid guys! Need more vids with Dan building stuff. Dan my be able to help me, my GQ tb42 efi, never gets hot unless you leave it idle with aircon on?
Tip for anyone, don't touch the tops of liners apart from a light brass brush and always check liner height AFTER cleaning
