    Resleave it and rebuild it to spec. Video the rebuild in detail and market the workshop and suppliers who do the work, then auction / raffle the engine to cover your costs. Plenty of young fellas would like the insight / knowledge

    Rebuild it. It's always handy to have a spare TD42 that you know is good. Besides, I'm sure you're considering geting another Patrol to build like Timmy's rig in Tassie. W/a good TD42 motor already at hand, you can look for one that has a blown engine or a very high mileage to save on the purchase price. Plus it's more content for your channel. Win-Win 👍

Thanks for sharing the learnings too, I’m sure lots of us got to see parts of an engine we haven’t before, your explanations and capture makes it easier to put it into perspective and understand things better. Thanks mate, great video.

    Sold a lot of TD 42 engine parts 90% of the dead engines were from over boosting and trying to get too much hp out of these old engines. Stick to max 15 psi. 10 psi boost and they will last even with std pistons. Want more power go for a Cummings 4.5 lt where you can get 700 nm torque out of the box and the engine is built to last in trucks and busses

  • @randombeel9472
    @randombeel9472 Před 10 měsíci +2

    Having stripped and cleaned 100s of these engines thier biggest issue is the steam holes that run horizontal between the bores and diagonally to the deck, these holes block up then crack the counter bore under the sleeves about two inches down the bore, you will see hot spots on the sleeve, fix is bore out the counter bore and fit thicker sleeves, and drill the gunk out of the steam holes, need about a 100mm long 3mm drill bit

    Definitely an unfortunate situation having to swap engines a few times but I don’t think it’s Burdos tune at all, engine sitting for years then sparked back to life not knowing it’s history if its been dusted or what ever, that a big chance that sometimes doesn’t pull off, great video mate, cheers

    Built TD42, stroker or Stock length stroke with the works. Either sell it off find or something to put it in
    As for the oil burner factory turbo motor my guess is it's sat with an intake open on one cylinder and exhaust valve on the other or something similiar like Nick mentioned
    The poor silvertop probably had bugger all ring tension left so the boost and fuel probably just went straight through to the sump 😂

    If you're not going to rebuild it, you could keep many of the parts as spares. Not that you'll most likely need them in the near future, considering you've just fitted a new crate motor. But knowing you, you might buy another project Patrol - to chop into a dedicated rock crawling, terrain taming, bog bashing rig. So it could serve as parts for it. 😁

  • @einfelder8262

    My bet is it had two oversized injectors in 3 and 4. Overfuelled and run hot on those two pots. When the oil burning reached where it did, the owner parked it. It's not from dusting or water, the firing order means fuel/air is fed to all cylinders more or less evenly, never all the mix to 3 and 4 only.

    Yes you should stroke that engine, how cool would that sound 😄
    I think you just got unlucky, I've been there with used engines more than once.
    Not a mechanic but I'd hazard a guess that it had been over heated at some point with the two inner cylinders having the problem and the fact the cooling system was immaculately clean.
    I'd also guess the knocking noise was piston slap.

      They are not problematic naturally. Problem is. People don't just leave them. How they are. Only reason why the land cruiser have gained such a rep for being reliable is because everyone who bought them just left them na and were happy. Everyone nowadays wants big power outta these things. Same thing with the 1hz's. You turbo them and start chasing power they start having issues. You leave a Toyota motor out in a paddock open to the elements for 5 years and the same thing will happen. It's just user error.

  • @Hitman-ds1ei
    @Hitman-ds1ei Před 10 měsíci

    Dont think I've heard so much guessing in one clip 😂😂😂😂
    Heres the plot, with the centre 2 cylinders the dust has so much energy it doesn't turn in the manifold enough to get to 1&2 then 5&6 as much as 3&4 which is more line of sight, then as you can see with the excessive carbon build up the reduced ring land dia above the piston which is designed that way so carbon build up doesn't polish the bore, this has gotten to the point where its exceeded the ability to keep away from cylinder walls and has been amplified by dust into 3&4 then the bore scuffing is the result, in motors designed for 1M plus kms they have flame rings at top liners to constantly clean top ring land, bad tune up only magnifies the issue with excessive carbon from the soot of overfuelling and excessive injection duration, i bet if you had looked closely at induction piping you would see evidence of dust ingress, if there is a leak point ( including poor maintenance practice of not changing airfilters) then you know where new one is headed, if your operating in dusty areas then 2 things, regularly pull of intake to turbo and look for dust evidence, this will be either staining and or abrading of leading edges of compressor wheel, be sure to silastic over the top of every joint between turbo and air filter ( on the outside not between as it seal's just as well but much easier to take apart, a little rubber grease on air filter sealing surfaces works wonders too, if your really serious about getting good life out of new motor then at least for a couple of oil changes cough up for some oil sample kits and dont "guess" any more make sure you know its all going good, JMHO as working on 2000+ hp diesels in mining this is absolutely mandatory for 35 - 40,000 hrs of engine life,
    Thats not even taking into account correct engine oils and intervals where overfueling and soot contamination are contributing factors etc etc etc.
