her chaos is beautiful.
thank you for putting it so well
indeed!
Chaos is inherently destructive. I wouldn't call her on screen meltdowns beautiful. I would call it sad. She needs help.
If you think people in psych wards are bad, it's nothing compared to the psychosis of the youtube comment section.
what are you talking about? Aint an accident
Maria Bamford is awesome. In my opinion, she's underrated. She is sharp, talented, poignant, and hilarious. She takes dark and uncomfortable subject matter and skillfully finds not only the humor in it but also the pathos and the ever elusive bright side.
For those of you who had such an averse reaction, kudos to you for giving her a chance. Not everyone has to like Maria's comedy. Everyone has their own taste. I recommend giving her another chance, though, because once you get accustomed and grow to appreciate her unique, surreal style, she's mesmerizing.
Her style is really really unique- I have a lot of respect for her and really admire her persona
Her delivery of "getting you into...a shape" is a fucking virtuoso moment. There is nobody in comedy right now who is doing what Maria Bamford is doing.
jonah, serious question, are you gay? Because I think her comedy makes feminine types laugh. I dunno, didn't find her stuff funny.
Feminine types laugh? what? Have you seen her material? It's not like she jokes about periods or limp dicks. Her comedy is very unique and it takes some getting used to. I didn't care for her at first, and now she's my favorite comedian.
Nobody ever has done what Maria does, nor do I think that anyone has the balls to try now. She is defiantly one of a kind. She may be a niche style comedian but she will be loved by those who get her.
Yeah most comedians come out and make people laugh. Maria Bamford is on her own thing, doesn’t need those laughs
Her style of humor is interesting. I've seen this twice now and it's growing on me.
+dued27 hehe yeah. Kind of reminds me of Jonathan Winters.
+dued27 She's hands down one of my all-time favorite comedians. I love her style and personality.
+dued27 She did a series of Black Friday commercials for Target several years ago
/playlist?list=PLyL3yRn0s3joVqYRl6AA0DNm1Mlu0090I
Her character's enthusiasm oddly reminds me of Pee-Wee Herman.
+dued27 Find her one woman web show when she goes back to Duluth. So good. She's so good all the time.
+dued27 You gotta see her live. It's over an hour of brilliance, characters, and... OMG. She really is the favorite comedian of ALL comedians. Nobody can do what she does.
She's probably the best comic out there. Has been for many years. Reading these comments makes me realize just how boring and sad and joyless so, so, so many people are.
it is a darn shame
Regan is wonderful as well. Good taste!
She's like the entirety of an odd cartoon show embodied in human form.
Not a coincidence, she's done tons of voice work for a lot of cartoons.
And I would gladly watch that cartoon.
she's got Robin Williams like flow
Lady Dynamite. Episodes binged. God bless Netflix.
How can we last until next year? :(
Right there with you, Lady Dynamite is so funny.
Just finished the binge watch today at work (don't judge me) Sooooooo freakin funny!!! I needed more episodes.
yes.
It's on Netflix?! Amazing! Thank you for the info.
20 years ago I lived in Los Angeles and saw plenty of comedy shows and have seen plenty since. I remember seeing her live, and being absolutely blown away by her and her bits from that night STILL resonate and make me laugh to this day. She is a savant and it's incredibly cool to see her get her own show so late into her career. It's a very cool time for female comedians and it's awesome to see this extremely unconventional genius getting her due.
LOVE her. Been great watching her act grow and change and she is still the same wacky person :)
Maria, you bring me so much joy! I feel understood when I hear your comedy, and it helps me laugh at myself and not take myself so seriously. Thank you SO much for following your passion and sharing it with us.
Man she's great. So skilled and talented.
I rarely laugh at her act, but I can't help but watch in appreciation of how awesome she is.
same
Personally I often find her very funny. But there's also a kind of spoken-word true beauty without hilarity, which e.g. a lot of Spalding Gray and Dave Foley has for me. Foley doesn't memorize his standup (which varies widely in quality imo) word for word, and speaks the improvised sentences as if he's Abraham Lincoln, and I mean that as a compliment.
1:04 "Did you just bring an old salad to bed? *makes raccoon noises"
LOL
I've never, ever seen her be anything but fearless and hilarious. So great.
the way she can use her voice is crazy talent
Maria is the voice in my head, and I couldn't be happier... :)
"Nothing's been consummated. Though we were doing furious handholding and OUR. PALMS. WERE. RAW. WITH. DESIRE."
This made me laugh so hard. Love her.
Fuck, I love Maria. Her new show is fuckin great too
Classy choice of words.....idiot
No need to get upset and be rude, kid
@Gianni P: You're on CZcams and you're expecting a "classy choice of words" out of people? Did you just zap in from some other dimension? 'Cuz it sure don't work that way in this one.
HAMMER, ANVIL, HAMMER, ANVIL!
That was glorious, difficult for a few seconds and then utterly hilarious.
"Come on Maria i wanna see you pushin!" truly amazing subtle comedy.
She's so weird, I love it!
Maria is the best that happened comedy ever.
I love Maria Bamford. She's funny and she's a really good friend to those of us with OCD and other related issues.
This is how you do schtick, best crazy person.
+Daniel Rowley She reminds me of the actress Carol Kane, who's played a few nutsy characters in various sitcoms and movies.
Okay, to the people who didn't find it funny: I have a suggestion.
Play the video again, but don't watch the screen. Just open another tab or close your eyes. I find that Maria Bamford is one of the few comics who's better when you just listen to her material as opposed to watching her perform it.
+Henric von WinklebottomI agree! My first thought was that she seemed to be performing on a radio show as opposed to on stage in front of people.
Worked for me! I love her CDs but it just doesn't seem to work for me in video until I close my eyes. Strange.
+Cody Konior Yeah, unlike a lot of other comedians, her facial expressions and body language aren't part of the actual material. Every punchline is communicated vocally. Instead, she uses her body the way a voice actor would: gesturing and making faces not to communicate anything nonverbally, but in order to affect the way she talks. So if you watch her body, you'll just end up getting distracted. The entire act is in her voice.
Personally, I love watching her. Although I think I've accidentally picked up some of her facial expressions. oh well xD
Maria is a god. Nothing more to say.
She doesn't use relevance to connect with the audience to get pity laugh, her stories are random and creative and she makes it so interesting!
I love Maria Bamford. She is a true original. First time I saw her was several years ago on one of those shows on Comedy Central shot in a club where several comedians would get up and do a few minutes. Within just a few seconds I could tell something was going on that I'd never seen or heard before in comedy. It was stark and immediate enough that something new and original was happening that I shot up from my seat and had to stand there to watch the rest of it. Offhand, I'd say it was that she depicted personalities and mindsets that I had never really seen anyone else depict in a comedy set, and not only that she had captured the personalities of certain people, certain types of people, so accurately that I could tell she really experienced it. Really helped that some of her material was about working boring temp jobs, which is a real-life subject that almost all comedians never go near and totally don't understand. But Maria Bamford does, or did in that material, anyway. The people who don't like her think she's just being weird, doing weird voices, but there is actually a ton of very subtle, perceptive and unique stuff going on. Helps if you're not tone deaf and can see past the surface of things. Now that we know more about her life, can see her show, it's clear that she has been affected by some somewhat serious psychological struggles. Nothing amazingly tragic, I think, but it seems to have affected her life more than most people's little abnormalities do, even though they like to pretend "Hey, we're all crazy!" Whatever is really going on, Maria Bamford seems to have owned it has found a way to express herself creatively and in a way that speaks to me like many other comedians cannot, no matter how much they try. She's true quality and I think most of the better comedians working today would say the same thing.
love that the Manfried voice is the one suggesting horseback riding. Maria's so awesome
That voice acting though, holy crap. Legit fits the stereotypes.
still one of the best comics, love her
I like her style of comedy. I like comics who keep their focus and delivers their material without pausing to laugh or be amazed at how the audience is taking it.
if you didn't think this was funny, please be aware that many many people did. And before you say that this categorically was NOT funny, keep in mind that you probably didnt pay very close attention, as maria bamford packs jokes in extremely tight, and be on your way
Genius, and for you who waited for the joke that never came. That joke ain't waiting for you. Maria and Doug Stanhope are the most non conventional out there, Maria on style and delivery, Doug on message and content.
+Oscar Svensson Also the TWO BEST IN THE WORLD
If you understand spanish you should look for Miguel Noguera's Ultrashows. That's fucked up.
I agree on both points however stanhope is a bit too real for my taste(as paradise predicted). I respect his carrier and see his genius but he gets a bit too dark for me at times, but I still watch his sets here and there.
I love Stanhope and he's unique but I wouldn't call being dark, real, and insightful an unconventional approach among comedians.
Maria Bamford and Doug Stanhope are my two favorite living comedians.
Maria is genius & has always been WAY before her time! One of my favorite comedians since the 90s!
The first time I ever saw her, around the time she first started, she blew my mind. I will probably always have a nostalgic appreciation for her. I see some people think she isn't funny in the comments, but I think if you aren't familiar with her and know what she's about then you just wont get it...if you've been with her throughout the years you automatically get a little tickled to hear her transitions. Her home show was hilarious too.
Brilliance showcased before us.
This is new to me and awesome. I love it. Haven't laughed out loud at standup in a while. Going to check more of her stuff out.
***** Thank you!
+Mister Paradise She's famous for her GREAT impersonations (almost never of famous people - unless you count Meridity Baxter-Birney lol). I had front row center seats for her at The Laughing Skull in Atlanta and I have never laughed so hard. She also does a lot of talking with audience members which takes an amazingly brave comic and fast wit. She thinks up stuff in a quarter of a second that would take most people weeks to write.
+Tolen May She sounds incredible. I want to see her live!
Hammer/anvil - Venus in Furs reference?
She just gets better and better LMAO!
I have never understood how Maria Bamford became a successful comedian. I have seen so much of her content and it never even makes me crack a smile.
IMO longer sets are more conducive to her style, but I think she's brilliant. Her self-produced "Maria Bamford Show" is genius. Very original.
Bamford rules! Still the secret weapon of standup.
Hammer
Anvil
HAMMER
ANVIL
HAMMER!
ANVIL!
Maria is one of my favorites and this is the best performance on CZcams of her "fudging and wudging" joke. This joke is brilliant and I've never heard a better description of intercourse - sex in onomatopoeia. 😂
"Hammer, anvil, hammer, anvil!!" is so evocative.
I just get her so much.
She's dethroned Louie as my favorite Comedian today. She's a national treasure!
I don't know about you, but I have many favorite comedians. I categorize them by style, not by popularity.
I'm happy that she's married. A girl this funny shouldn't be alone.
That was... surreal.
Some of it, but "nothing's been consummated," e.g., was a punchline as such, a reversal of expectations.
I loved her in Louie. I love her here.
Omg she's amazing.
I couldn't help but laugh every time she started talking like Phyllis Lapin-Vance. Hahah
"Furious hand-holding" lol
She is brilliant.
She's one of the few where I couldn't stop myself smiling if I wanted to.
Maria Bamford is my spirit animal. I want to hug her in a totally non creepy way.
Fucking genius. Pure.
Loved it.
Genius.
Her comedy feels new. People are uncomfortable or immediately turned off with that, but I like it. It's growing on me.
Maria's awesome!
Love Maria! Her style of comedy isn't for everyone, but her silliness is what makes her great.
Maria got married!!! One of the funniest people on the planet!
nice of Colbert to invite the Bamster. been following her act for years.
I seriously seriously love this woman!!! She gives me sooooo many laughs :D
The Master.
Best standup alive right now.
"but girls aren't funny or the best at anything!..." yeah... We are the anvil and she is the hammer. Go Bammer!
Love all the guys taking a break from Fallout 4 to say that they don't get it. Birbiglia could follow with the exact same routine and they'd be like, "Oh, I suddenly understand words again. Thank you, baby Jesus. My powers of cognition have returned! This is good stuff."
Kinison, same routine: "He doesn't give a shit about audiences' expectations."
Cleese, same routine: "Inspired lunacy."
Norm, same routine: "It's cool how those of us who get Norm know all those words too."
Tig, same routine: "Liberalism is a disease."
Patrice, same routine: "I don't really like uppity comedians."
It's comedy with no rules, off-putting but generally pretty funny and interesting to watch.
I love Maria Bamford so much!
Goodness I love her. I've watched the whole Maria Bamford Show on youtube. Her stream of consciousness oversharing style is uniquely hilarious!
HAMMER ANVIL HAMMER ANVIL HAMMER ANVIL!!! Genius.
The funniest ever.
Late show needs more stand-up. And more Maria Bamford.
John Oliver saying that this was his favorite comedian sent me here... maybe I'm biased.. but I love her too😂
One of the few comedians that actually make me laugh
I've always liked Maria Bamford's stand up, butthis was and extra good/random "Tight 5". Jam on!
She makes a good story-teller. Paints quite a picture.
gotta support people who strive despite their "dis"-abilities
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. She's my favorite!
One of the very best!
i need a new album from her. this was great.
She is absolutely brilliant!
how do yall not laugh? shes hilarious!!
Even though I (just me personally) wasn't really into her routine, I would LOVE to see her in more stuff of TV/Film! She threw so many great potential characters into this! I'm surprised she doesn't have a more extensive list of parts!
superstar!!!
She's in front of a Green Screen and the audience is on laugh track
this woman is a fucking treasure.
MARIA!!! YOU'RE BACK!!
So ridiculously hilarious and weird I love it.
OMG Maria YOU ROCK !!!! So HILARIOUS !!!!
West side story style: MAAAARRIIIIAAAA! MAAARRIIIAAAAAAHHH!
The queen. We love you too.
Gotta love a good solid descriptive title
Very soft spoken
I just... love you Maria. You are my fav comedian :)
Certainly unorthodox! Love it. She challenges me.
I’M A HUSK! I CAN’T FEEL MY HANDS!
I'll take 1 Bamford over 20 Dane Cooks any day. :D
I want to hug all of her anxieties away.
