    Maria Bamford is awesome. In my opinion, she's underrated. She is sharp, talented, poignant, and hilarious. She takes dark and uncomfortable subject matter and skillfully finds not only the humor in it but also the pathos and the ever elusive bright side.
    For those of you who had such an averse reaction, kudos to you for giving her a chance. Not everyone has to like Maria's comedy. Everyone has their own taste. I recommend giving her another chance, though, because once you get accustomed and grow to appreciate her unique, surreal style, she's mesmerizing.

I remember seeing her live, and being absolutely blown away by her and her bits from that night STILL resonate and make me laugh to this day. She is a savant and it's incredibly cool to see her get her own show so late into her career. Personally I often find her very funny. But there's also a kind of spoken-word true beauty without hilarity, which e.g. a lot of Spalding Gray and Dave Foley has for me. Foley doesn't memorize his standup (which varies widely in quality imo) word for word, and speaks the improvised sentences as if he's Abraham Lincoln, and I mean that as a compliment.

    Play the video again, but don't watch the screen. Just open another tab or close your eyes. I find that Maria Bamford is one of the few comics who's better when you just listen to her material as opposed to watching her perform it.

      @pennyfarting Před 8 lety +14

      +Cody Konior Yeah, unlike a lot of other comedians, her facial expressions and body language aren't part of the actual material. Every punchline is communicated vocally. Instead, she uses her body the way a voice actor would: gesturing and making faces not to communicate anything nonverbally, but in order to affect the way she talks. So if you watch her body, you'll just end up getting distracted. The entire act is in her voice.

    I love Maria Bamford. She is a true original. First time I saw her was several years ago on one of those shows on Comedy Central shot in a club where several comedians would get up and do a few minutes. Within just a few seconds I could tell something was going on that I'd never seen or heard before in comedy. It was stark and immediate enough that something new and original was happening that I shot up from my seat and had to stand there to watch the rest of it. Offhand, I'd say it was that she depicted personalities and mindsets that I had never really seen anyone else depict in a comedy set, and not only that she had captured the personalities of certain people, certain types of people, so accurately that I could tell she really experienced it. Really helped that some of her material was about working boring temp jobs, which is a real-life subject that almost all comedians never go near and totally don't understand. But Maria Bamford does, or did in that material, anyway. The people who don't like her think she's just being weird, doing weird voices, but there is actually a ton of very subtle, perceptive and unique stuff going on. Helps if you're not tone deaf and can see past the surface of things. Now that we know more about her life, can see her show, it's clear that she has been affected by some somewhat serious psychological struggles. Nothing amazingly tragic, I think, but it seems to have affected her life more than most people's little abnormalities do, even though they like to pretend "Hey, we're all crazy!" Whatever is really going on, Maria Bamford seems to have owned it has found a way to express herself creatively and in a way that speaks to me like many other comedians cannot, no matter how much they try. She's true quality and I think most of the better comedians working today would say the same thing.

    Even though I (just me personally) wasn't really into her routine, I would LOVE to see her in more stuff of TV/Film! She threw so many great potential characters into this! I'm surprised she doesn't have a more extensive list of parts!
