I remember the rivalry - I don't consider myself a fan of boxing per se, but this was a golden era for exciting, British boxing. My parents were hooked, and I got caught up with the excitement. Two very different personalities. I loved every minute.
I have nothing but respect for Benn as a fighter after the McClellan fight, the guy fought tooth and nail and never gave up. (Just such a pity about the tragic outcome for McClellan)
He fought dirty asf tho. He head budded McClellan multiple times and hit him hard in the back of the head multiple times per round, which was what caused the internal bleeding in his brain.

Interesting styles of entry. Conservative Nigel walks on quietly with his hands behind his back then folded in front, and bows. Eubank struts up with a swagger, ridiculous glasses and gives a thumbs-up to himself...and reduces Nigel to a 'business obstacle.' Gotta like Nigel tho. His offer of "Here's a few quid mate" was bloody smart and tooo funny. Great bloke.
This was a massive fight at the time in 1993. Watched by 18.5million on free terrastial tv(ITV), 42k at old trafford. God only knows a how much people around the world watched it aswell.
The rivalry between Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank in British boxing is meteoric. I don't feel the same way for the rivalry between Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua.
I think boxing was much better back when it was on normal tv. Everyone could tune in and watch it. Incan remember even my grandma would tune in and watch the Frank Bruno fights.
He used to hang around with some nasty people too, one person who used to walk him into the ring 'tony tucker' was gunned down with two men in a deserted lane in Essex, (the Essex boys retenden murder case) he also admits to being a Satanist in them days too. He's a born again Christian now though. But probably wasn't a very nice bloke at the time.
What i cant understand is why Benn was getting 1million and Eubank 750k when Eubank won their first fight. Have i missed something? Eubank had WBO Title and Benn WBC Surely its 50-50 purse split.
Benn had the top-of-the-top title that’s why. The WBO belt wasn’t even really recognised and taken seriously in England and America. It was okly just around thsh time, the belt was starting to be taken seriously. The WBC belt Benn had. In the heavyweight division for example, that’s the belt Mike Tyson, Ali, Lennox Lewis etc had. So, Benn was putting the far bigger valuable prize on the line, hence he commanded more money. Does this answer your question. Albeit 3 years belated/late.
@@jasonprendergast7493 Yes! Excellent answer. So the we be crooks belt took priority. I always thought the WBC didnt count according to one James Toney who said we dont even count that...my bad
Benn was brave never flinched and never backed off! Really TOugh But personally i prefer Eubank his attiude and cool temperament in the ring and his technicality as boxer he was so calculating!!! The most ring savvy by far out of the 2

If Benn had been a bit more controlled in this fight and hadn't hit Eubank with low blows 2 or 3 times, he'd have won - not by much as it was very close, but, those low blows cost him the bout. Eubank looked a light heavy/cruiserweight in there; Benn a middle/super middleweight. Enjoyable and entertaining - now for Part 2.
yeh i was surprised my self when i found out, if you loook at the fight at the start of the second his gumshield is hanging out and his gasping for air, i heard when sparring aswell it was all out war no holding back.
Wen benn stood up I thought it was gonna kick off I think Chris did too 😂
I bet Jonathan Ross was shitting his pants when benn did that and I don't blame him lol
Eubank is a national treasure, his response to the first question was undoubtedly humble.
One thing I love about eubank sr is his honesty

Chris has proven his integrity. Integrity is everything. Chris Eubank is a true ambassador for boxing and sport.
"The right honorable gentleman" 🤣🤣🤣 on a par with "parliamentary procedure" that one!

Eubank vs Benn is like Ali vs Frazier, Cant wait to see the great rivalry that could manifest in future boxers!
Cheers 4 posting this is great stuff
When Benn stood up to crack that joke you knew at some point in the future they'd squash their beef and that they did..great rivalry
