      Astrophysicist here. I'm no expert on the orbit of the Moon, but if you want a good example of orbital decay, neutron stars and black holes are where it's at. General Relativity states that objects in orbit do lose energy in the form of gravitational waves, just really, really slowly - much slower than the energy loss due to friction of the marble on the rubber sheet. We've measured this orbital decay hundreds of times now, way back as early as the 1970's and 80's when it was detected in the Hulse Taylor pulsar, and now on an almost daily basis as LIGO/VIRGO/KAGRA measure colliding binary black holes.

      Its better than appealing to authority. Just because lots of people claim to know something, doesn't mean its true. If you can't demonstrate it, then you don't know it. If you don't know it, then say that. Too many people say something is, just because they were told that by a teacher, parent, preacher, or even friends, but never learn the fundamental concepts behind the ideas. Just because you think its true, doesn't mean it is. Just because its a theory doesn't mean it is not true.

      @@criticalthinker420 It's not better, just appealing to authority and an argument from personal incredulity are both just "I don't know but im going to give this answer". At least with an argument from expert consensus you are going with people who are in the field and study the topic, at least in most cases there's peer reviewed data.

    • @criticalthinker420
      @criticalthinker420 Před 19 dny

      @@Aphnesa I get what your saying, but 99% of the "experts" in the field only read books and agree with the premises presented, they don't question or even attempt to perform the test required to actually verify the truth, they just take it as it is said and never question its validness. If it says so in the book, then it must be true. This is what Christians do with the bible, and students do with the text books. There are very few who actually verify for themselves anything at all. Everything that anyone knows should be able to be demonstrated either through experiments or logic reasoning. If you can't demonstrate through logic, then public experiments with documents details should be provided. Those details are not meant to be taken at face value for being true, but instead are so someone else can replicate the exact experiment. Too many "scientist" have faked data just to get ahead in their project, they even had a big investigation a few years back about colleges getting caught faking data in experiments. As a true skeptic, all sides and all things should be taken as true ONLY when the observer has satisfied their doubts AND can demonstrate why their doubts are gone and why others should also agree. If the only answer you have is because someone else smarter than you said so, then you shouldn't even be part of the conversation in the first place. You should just talk about how pretty the celebrities are at the Oscar, or what your favorite thing is. Not everything said in this video was true, on either side, although the skeptic maybe more likely to be correct in the overall viewpoint, the reasons they were right were not accurately presented in this video. It okay if you want to believe what someone said is true, but you shouldn't use that belief as evidence for someone else to believe it also. Either present the evidence and prove your case, or just say "I am not convinced of your position, even though I can't directly demonstrate an alternative view , I can be sure you haven't presented enough evidence for me to accept your viewpoint either", just because no one knows the answer in the conversation, doesn't mean any answer thrown in there is correct. Its all good though, at least the skeptics are looking for truth and not looking for affirmation of their beliefs.

    • @Aphnesa
      @Aphnesa Před 19 dny +2

      @criticalthinker420 I agree that skepticism should be the default approach to any claim regardless of the source, my only point in what I said was to say that someone saying "I don't know how/understand how/ x 'could be true, so I don't believe it is"' especially when it comes to well established science, is not a remotely better position than "I trust the expert consensus on this subject that's been demonstrated to have at least gone through peer review".
      That doesn't mean there aren't people out there with ulterior motives in the studies they're running, or that even a sincere attempt at peer review couldn't be wrong, just simply that a source that's at least attempted critical analysis and peer review is more often a reliable source than just "nuh uh" and personal intuition ("common sense").
      Regardless, everyone should still review the reasoning or data behind any argument presented, and anyone who is giving an argument should be prepared to substantiate it or admit they can't.

      And then we will see if you can deliver that and if it is as simple as what normal physics provides. Example:
      Geocentrism needs a lot of work to explain why planets go retrograde, the heliocentric model is simple and clear with no trickery. Believe in geocentrism all you want, but do the calculations in the easy and more correct model.

    Also winter isn't caused by the elliptical orbit, it's the angle of the earth. Otherwise the whole earth would experience winter and summer at once.

    Flat earthers are just trolls ... not a single flat earther has EVER made a pilgrimage to the edge. They all know it's not flat, they just like arguing (and losing).

    What I'm reminded of with this conversation is those coin funnel things they used to have at every mall, where you'd roll a quarter into it and the momentum of the quarter would keep it from rolling straight into the center. Maybe this guy never got to use them, to see how priciples of physics like momentum, velocity, and orbit work in tandum.

    It's crazy how some people like Victor can predict the motion of planets with pure intuition. It's a wonder he doesn't apply to NASA.
