    One point you didn't mention is the fact most radio stations in the US belong to a handful of companies. DJs are no longer independent programmers; they push buttons on the playlist sent to them by corporate. I can't remember now exactly where, but I remember listening to a podcast where a DJ spoke about how they were given a list of things to play and could not deviate from it, period.
    It really boils down to large corporations making dirty deals with each other and milking the industry for all they can, usually at the expense of the artists. Artists end up having to pay back all the "promotional" expenses before they see a dime of profit from their own work. And that is the ugliest part of this whole business, in my opinion.

    Some radio DJs in my country (Portugal) were complaining on instagram than we asked for BTS so much. A couple of stories down they admited it was annoying because they get the requests but have 0 (ZERO) control over what gets played: they don't choose ANY songs. It's all chosen by the radio manager. I think that's pretty clear what that means: DJ request are a thing of the past and pretty much meaningless nowadays. DJs themselves are pretty meaningless nowadays as well, they know nothing about music and read little prepared spiels. The only way a song gets played is by paying the radio manager to do it. The same problem is also in other countries. I'm from Europe and here nobody plays kpop on the radio until the song is in English and is very popular.
    The first song that ARMYs managed to play on the radio with was dynamite. We had to win all sorts of surveys and pay for it, but in the end we succeeded. The next time with Butter it was easier but they still want to play only English songs.
    Honestly, they have a problem with kpop or only for BTS. When BTS had a collab with Coldplay and my universe came out, I heard it on the radio a lot of times. The song has Korean lyrics combined with English and the only reason it was played was Coldplay. Coldplay is very popular in my country and has been heard for a decade. Well the thing is their music is way too diverse for it to just be categorised as pop. I could easily name about 15-20 songs that fall under rock, emo, Funk, Grunge, Electronic. And that doesn't even include the huge part of their discography being hard-core hiphop. So the issue of the genres you mentioned facing these problems are sure one part of it. But that would only be if people were even aware they have a discography of almost about 300 tracks with the most diverse songs.
      The Western media loves pretending BTS is just kid friendly pop music. This is were the industry politics come in. The west likes when something from outside trends as long as they can call it 'oh how cute', or 'how funny', or 'its ridiculously catchy' etc. Remember Gangnam Style? That's a good example. But the moment they realise an artist from outside is beyond one trending song, but has a huge history and artistry it's now a threat.
      So they will actively downplay everything to fanatic, obsessive fans that will die for these 'little korean boys'. Wherein the reality is the highest percentage of their fans are of age 30 to 40 and the rest of the age groups almost equally divided.
      Ps. They did have problematic past. Mainly the rappers since they came from underground. And their exposure to hip hop was not educated exposure. Partly also since, Korea back then weren't too aware about political correctness and what could be insultful. So them as 15-20 yr olds would imitate a lot of things, and hairstyles not knowing it could be insultful to the community. Until they themsleves started realising what they were doing. Because of which, by 2016, after writing their lyrics they would get it read by professionals so that they could learn how the issues work and where they must improve. And note, this was when they weren't even big in Korean.

    @deanncoates8456 Před rokem +132

    All these years I have been following BTS, even prior to their explosion into the U.S. music scene. DJs, music journalists and others ALWAYS say it's ARMY and not general public buying, streaming and watching mvs....they NEVER stop and talk about ARMY ARE the general public. If you take the number of subs on JUST ONE of BTS social media accounts, example YT, there are literally 10s of millions of subscribers...if each ONE of those 10s of millions watched ONE specific video 1 time each day which would equal 1 spin/listen on the radio each day...it's a no brainer.
    Instead, they refuse to believe that BTS can pull those nbrs without "excessive replay" by a small group of ARMY. The difference is these 10s of millions of ARMY are listening to different BTS songs, albums, mvs across the whole spectrum of BTS discography.
    THAT is the only reason we encourage each other to stream, watch and buy the most recent work they put out. It's to "tunnel vision" if you will, just like radio playing the latest song of a specific artist every 30 to 45 minutes. If it is OK for them to do using their platforms why is it not OK for ARMY to do so with the tools we have?

      @ystrw Před rokem +19

      Yes, that's why BTS MVs always hit millions of views in their first minutes and hours. But I think YT has reduced, or even eliminated, the repeat-views count. Because recent views are way, way down- not just for BTS, but for Itzy, Seventeen and others. and they all cap out in their first 24 hours at around the same number- between 10 and 11m views. (I'm trying to figure out a way to test this...) I also notice a lot of people are moving off to other platforms, Patreon especially.
      And as to replay, yeah, it may surprise some people, but ARMY don't actually sit on social media 24-7 waiting for every slightest update. We spread the word like that because it's a big fandom, and the boys pour out so much content that it's easy to miss or overlook something. Besides, we like to share. If other fandoms don't, that's a them problem; they're perfectly free to remind and encourage each other if they want to. They don't want to, fine, but then they've no right to complain about us doing it.

      *You don’t have to look far to see other artists who have played this game to their advantage. Take Harry Styles, who gave his slow-burning hit “Watermelon Sugar” a last-minute push to No. 1 in early August by releasing three physical/digital single bundles, two new music videos and discounting the download to 69 cents during the same tracking week. Or Travis Scott and Kid Cudi, who blasted “The Scotts” to a No. 1 debut with help from “15 physical configurations,” according to Billboard. (The track dropped to No. 12 in its second week, proof that staying at No. 1 is a much different battle than reaching No. 1.)*
      *Speaking of remixes: Maybe BTS’s critics forgot about Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande’s “Rain on Me,” which was available at various points to stream and purchase in its original form, as an instrumental, and as remixes by Purple Disco Machine and Ralph Rosario. That’s to say nothing of Doja Cat’s “Say So” and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage,” both of which vaulted to No. 1 thanks to high-profile remixes featuring Nicki Minaj and Beyonce, respectively.*
      *People who accused BTS of releasing too many versions of “Dynamite” might have also forgotten about Taylor Swift, who released 16 deluxe physical editions (eight CDs and eight vinyl) and a variety of merchandise bundles of her latest No. 1 album, Folklore. Swift also boosted her recent No. 1 single, “Cardigan,” by selling a limited edition vinyl single that included the song’s original voice memo and releasing a “cabin in candlelight” version of the track for purchase and streaming.*
      *And of course, no rundown of outlandish Hot 100 antics would be complete without a salute to Drake, who reportedly recruited dancers and social media influencers Toosie, Ayo & Teo and Hiii Key to create dance moves for his chart-topping “Toosie Slide” and flaunt them across their social media platforms, creating a viral dance challenge for a song that hadn’t even dropped yet.*

      @@aziababy5732 I mean it´s not about kpop or about wanting everyone to enjoy BTS. But right now we and BTS are just very misleadingly represented by media. So that regular people in the states or anywhere in the world usually have a wrong prefabricated, prejudiced opinion about the group, their musical catalogue and the fanbase. This way people won´t even be able to ever know if they don´t or do like them because they wouldn´t want to give them a chance in the first place.
      I mean one example: (I don´t know if that stood out only to me or...) When Billboard reported on J-Hopes performance at Lollapalooza where he showcased HIS SOLOWORK including his new album for the first time. The one snippet they chose to show out of his 70 minute-long performance that was a pure Hiphop-performance throughout (with rock and rnb influences here and there), was from the ONE BTS-song he performed to show love for his group and surprise Army - Dynamite.
      The english pop song everyone already knows and associates BTS with. The song (that I love btw) that couldn´t be further away from being representative of his solo work, what he wanted to show the world and what he brought on to the stage that day. - And what I naturally expect from a music news channel (and we are talking Billboard here...!) is to of course report on the facts about his solo Lollapalooza performance and show the footage that encaptures what was musically going on.
      People who "don´t like" and also don´t really know BTS have in common most of the time that they also have no idea about their incredibly diverse discography. BUT they will probably know dynamite (or mabye Butter). Because it was literally everywhere after it came out. And I bet people who don´t particularly enjoy funky disco-pop tunes like Dynamite might think BTS is just exactly what that particular song stands for - nothing more or less. And they wouldn´t in their dreams think BTS could bless this world with albums like "Jack in the box". Which is super understandable! I don´t know and people can´t imagine a group/artist where I can expect to find songs like _Mic drop, Singularity, ddaeng, black swan, zero o clock, ugh, Epiphany, Agust d, friends, your eyes tell, go go, Moonchild, chicken noodle soup, Idol, my time, ma city, forever rain, more, ON, airplane pt 2, Dionysus, butterfly etc. etc. etc._ to sit on one table!
      And as far as I could observe it the media constantly tries incredibly hard to keep it that way.
      (this one example on it´s own is maybe a little bit far fetched - it´s just I notice this pattern everywhere and all the time after paying attention...but of course media was always known to in a subconscious way stigmatize things so that people are lead to where the money flows into the industries pockets...)
      ...Oh and I´m sorry @AziaBaby I didn´t initially plan to write a whole essay here and it´s not directed at you of course😅I totally get what you mean! - people have different tastes and that´s so important to be respected. In my opinion that´s also one of the first reasons why money shouldn´t dictate whats on the charts! Fair and equal public media representation and people´s genuine heartfelt opinions on the latter should be💜

    i used to think that billboard including airplay as a metric for charting was stupid and that they thought people actually actively listen to radio and get their daily dose from new music from radio stations. well, they know that. and it's kinda why they made it weigh so much. though you can manipulate streams and sales using bundles and other fraudulent acts but it's still easier to detect and it is policed. this is not the case with radio and it's quite literally the opposite. there is nothing authentic about it and looking at it as a measure of a song's popularity is invalid and makes no sense
    the thing is, airplay was already a major contributor to the calculation of the hot 100 but it was not the *biggest* contributor. yes it has weighed so much but a song could've still got a 1# by only its sales and streams, you can look at life goes on as an example. billboard has made HUGE changes to its charting rules and it was clearly a way of sabotage targeted towards bts starting from limiting purchases and sales. it's like they are sending them a message (more like threatening them) and leaving them with no choice but pay for radio play if they want to get another 1#. and we can't sit here and lie saying that it did not affect them.
    this is still so crazy to me and gives me flashbacks to that infamous billboard article in 2021, and it's making me think that the article was planned by billboard to get something out of bts regarding the "chart manipulation" claims. i dont know what type of response were they expecting but joon basically said "if you don't like the way things are going then change your rules" and it looks like they took it personally and found it a chance to put the rule changes - which im sure they had in mind for a long time - into effect.
    days ago bad decisions debuted at 10# and the song's radio impact had not even started yet at that time. ironically, bad decisions had the biggest US pure sales week for any single in 2022. so did these rules _actually_ affect bts? it might have but only in the sense of "you're not allowed to chart" but bts themselves, as a name in the industry and as artists, they are still the biggest and the most successful, they have the numbers and the demand. and this is not going to change anytime soon.

    • @ystrw
      @ystrw Před rokem +13

      The thing with this change is that it's going to come back to bite Billboard and US radio HARD. People are already focusing on digital over radio play, and the fact that you can't call in and request songs, and DJ's can't vary from the company-set playlists, means that people are going to keep turning away from radio and listening to what they actually want to hear from digital platforms. The Billboards are going to go the way of the grammys- disgraced and held in contempt- and radio is going to continue to struggle until it finally goes under entirely. It'll take a while, of course, but as long as they keep ignoring the Sales charts and the Trending charts- the ones that tell them what listeners are actually tuning in to- they're just shooting themselves in the foot. As for BTS- they don't need the grammys, and they don't need Billboard, either. Not when >15m people are breaking the internet and selling out tickets to watch ONE BTS member perform at America's most famous music festival. :)

    I'm going to take this and share it the next time sm1 tries to gaslight ppl abt when ARMY call these ppl out again and they try to play victim again.
    Thanks! This definitely explains a bit more succinctly abt why ppl from labels and companies are suddenly blaming ARMY for being inorganic nowadays for buying/listening to BTS's music but keep downplaying that companies are the ones that largely do the same for their artists too. How is fan effort less organic than company effort doing the same and more?
    Also, why do ppl keep acting like fans come out of nowhere? Or that having fans is why they have fans (the "they're successful bc they're popular" argument--how does that even make sense)? We _were_ part of the gp way before being fans, and no one would be a fan of anything if that thing wasn't good in the first place.
    And also want to say that BB doesn't even cover how they don't discourage unfair practices like paid-for radio or album bundling. This is clear when they lessen the weight of digital and streams to their chart points but keep radio as a big point source despite being called out for it for years (and they straight up admitted to profiting off bundles, which is why don't truly eliminate them).

With listeners tuning out radio and viewers not watching award shows you would think they would change things but they seem very short sighted. I am glad BTS is doing music on their terms. I will support BTS as much as I can. Thanks again for this video.

    I am so glad they did not do interviews for yet to come because we all knew it wasn’t getting radio play. I noticed the radio only plays English songs which is sad because when I went to Mexico, I was visiting my family and my uncle turned on the radio in his car and The song ice ice baby was playing and my uncle, who didn’t speak English was singing along to it. It’s kind of sad how much the whole world is accepting of Western music, especially in South Korea,however the west doesn’t really care about the love and support they receive form international fans and listeners. I hope things change.

Sales should be have been weighted more but they dont want that because they dont want bts on top. But atleast they should think about other artists as radio and streaming dont pay that much. It ruining artists.

    Radio is largely irrelevant these days. I listen to radio in the car but only if I want to hear the news headlines or weather report. Otherwise I Bluetooth my phone. I buy digital versions of the songs I like and play them on my mobile device or I listen to a streaming service. I also watch the MV’s on CZcams. I like that my streaming services create playlists for me based on my previous likes and throws in an occasional song from an artist I haven’t heard. Usually they make a good choice. I have no control over what I hear on radio and I’m lucky if I hear one song in an hour that I actually like. I will continue to buy music by BTS as a group or individually because I like their music….simple as that.

I mean I don’t even listen to the radio unless I am in the car like she said but it still made me mad because they had no right to never play their song but play the same damn songs over and over and over again which now makes sense why but anyways now they know never to see me in person or I’ll kick their ass.

    "Songs on the radio are not songs the GP likes. They are songs that the GP are forced to like."
    Even as a kid (before streaming, when we listened to CDs and radio), I wondered why a lot of radio stations only played a handful of songs over and over. I found it really annoying. After I grew up and learned more about the music industry, everything clicked.

    Watching this made me tear up.. Honestly this might probably sound like I'm over reacting but if i were BTS i don't think id be able to continue pursuing music like this. You give the results, your hard work is clearly being appreciated, and there are tons of evidences, testaments, that prove your worth; and yet you cannot achieve your dream because of people who do not share the same passion for music and only care for money. It's disappointing and its discouraging.
    What do awards like the grammys even mean now? How can these awards stay as prestigious as it is if the original purpose faded away because of greed? Adding into the fact that discrimination also comes into play... it hurts to think what BTS have gone through in the industry alone. Not to mention that not even their home country (media) wants to recognize the achievements they've done. It makes me so sad i cant help it.
    I'm glad BTS has chosen to focus on themselves and their artistry. Music is their passion and us ARMYs are what helps them continue this despite everything. Awards are just awards after all, what's important is the sincerity and the impact you have given to others. I hope we could continue supporting the boys and their music.

    It's literally crazy how I hear more BTS songs like ON or My Time playing at Starbucks and nothing on the radio. At the same time, it is also sad because when I heard the songs the other day I was so surprised to hear them when the level of fame they have should make it common to hear them in public spaces. I'm French and I stopped listening to the radio years ago. Not only do French radios push for French artists but now when you listen, you can really feel that they do not care about the music. The DJs are vulgar, rude, and work more for entertaining what little people listen to them than to play good music that they endorse.
    The worse is that every player in this industry (labels, radios, artists, investors) is getting fed by this system, to the detriment of the general public and those who refuse to play this game. Since no one listen to radio anymore, they think and do get away with it. The only chance would be to change the rules for charts, although they also participate and are satisfied with the way it works. Maybe once the chart systems and award shows lose their relevance and people stop paying any attention to it will it change.
    Journalists have been complaining about the niches and how fans have stopped paying attention to other artists. Streaming platforms may make this practice easier, but one should look at the global image first. Why don't we listen to the radio anymore? Because they force feed us songs. I am all for discovering new songs and artists but playing a song by an artist that I don't stan every 15min will just make me sick of hearing it.

    Sad thing is we knew before the DJ's thought we did that they are meaningless. We talked to them about it during fake love and idol and they tried to gaslight us. But if you weren't convinced then when mots7 came you smelled the BS. They all said they were so excited for it and almost none of them played ON. Army alone got it to number 4 on the hot100. That's why they REALLY hated us for charting Dynamite. We found a way around them just like our boys found a way around Korean media. Which is why they changed the billyboards but funny enough some more artists they didn't want on the charts got there like bad bunny. More and more artists are seeing the corruption and I call that a win for Army.

    Money is a medium of exchange, but sadly, it has become the worst influence on the personality and thinking of people in all professions. Not just the music industry, but corruption can be found anywhere, as long as you pay attention. Health, education, science… all became corrupt more or less just because of money and human greed. People who live with integrity will be oppressed and suffer many injustices, BTS is just one of the victims of that injustice and discrimination. I'm glad to have a mature, deep ARMY like you who understands the essence of the problem and inspires the fandom. Thanks very much

    I am truly surprised how this person explained everything in a easy way . I also know little bit about music industry. Most of the bosses are corrupt and they abuse there power . I don’t hear radio this days . At some point I start to listen I heart radio . It’s pretty cool . You can listen only your favorite artist there if you want . I remember listening bts song on radio couple times . Even in my workplace . I also had an amazing reaction then . I can’t remember exactly which one as I forget things a lot . But I hard at least 2/3 times in my work place . I get annoyed when they keep repeating songs that doesn’t makes me feel any kind of emotions. I feel bored and switch the channel. Playing songs in radio actually doesn’t mean that’s what listeners want . Sometimes no matter how good a song is we want to hear something new and different. I remember radio stations playing “ as it was” every 5/10 minutes. I like that song . But I wanted listen something new at some point . I know I get bored easily with same thing . But I want all good artist to get enough attention. Doing what we love and earning money is not a crime. I think more people should work in bigger positions. So that music industries could be little bit more clean . Lastly not everything usa people does is great . There is some gray side too. If you have the potential plz go become music producer. Power is everything. If you want to change the system you have to be part of it first know their strength and weakness then go against them and change the system. Thing’s really needs to change .
