  • At this point in their reign as the world’s biggest band, the members of BTS are accustomed to hero worship and nervous fans. But as that group’s leader, RM, sits across from Pharrell Williams in early September, onstage in an empty, secured auditorium at Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art, he’s unnerved to find himself on the other side of the equation. It feels “embarrassing,” RM says with a smile, to talk about his artistic journey in front of “my own idol.”

Second languages are extremely hard to navigate when you're nervous or any kind of emotional overwhelm and I'm continuously impressed with Namjoon's ability to navigate that while still being engaging.
Pharrell's patient, genuine interest as he found his words, effortless-worldly responses spoken plainly, fished from that place of wisdom and experience where legends live. This thought exchange was really one for the books. I can't wait to hear what comes of this.

I also believe in Pharrell’s kindness and patience without being patronizing to Namjoon. I haven’t seen enough of Pharrell so I don’t know how he really is. Obviously he’s a genius and can articulate it well.

He probably feels bad saying it because of us. He didn't want us to think he doesn't love or appreciate what we do for BTS. He said during the Festa that he feels guilty to complain. It really broke my heart to hear that and how much stress we put on them. He always say he doesn't want to disappoint us. I wish I can tell him he doesn't have to be perfect for us. We will love him no matter what.

And this is the collaboration no one could've ever imagined or expected. BTS literally shows everyone every freaking time that they are not just a "korean boy band group" they are more than that, you can't fit or restrict BTS into any category or genre. They are ARTISTS who loves to explore all kind of genres and excel in all of them. And i agree with Pharrell so much on the humble thing i mean these boys are the most humblest people i have i ever seen maybe that's what makes other artists fall for them over and over again. I am just so proud of these 7 boys they literally deserve all the recognition and love in this world. They make this world a better place to live in . Haha! I'm not gonna kill you but I would like to shoot you with some recommendations in case you're curious. RM is the main lyricist of BTS, together with SUGA and j-hope, who also write, compose and produce most of the songs for BTS, and sometimes other artists. RM has the most writing credits in the team (200 songs). His writing style is very deep and thoughtful, playful with words (double, triple entendres), he never writes non-sensical phrases. He is very philosophical, poetic but savage too.
The hype with BTS and what set them apart from the rest of pop acts are exactly that, the lyrics, who have the power to heal, change, and save people lives. They are a dance pop group, but while they're dancing they are saying things, important things. But you have to turn on the subtitles, that is. Now the recommendations:
      RM solo works:
      - RM (mixtape, 2015)
      - mono (mixtape, 2018)
      - Indigo (album, 2022)
Extra recs. If case you are into rap, hiphop, trap, check SUGA (AKA Agust D) and j-hope solo work too:
      - Agust D - Daechwita MV czcams.com/video/qGjAWJ2zWWI/video.html
      - j-hope - Arson MV czcams.com/video/QmpTkkaKYSU/video.html
      - BTS rap line - UGH! Live from Busan 2022 czcams.com/video/S0bMh_rJlIo/video.html

Lol...I hope people realize they are not gonna be killed if they do acknowledge the fact that they trully only know little about bts. Most outsiders assume and misconceive far too much resulting in them belittling bts without even realising they are. Can't blame them cause all media does is downplay their years of artistry. And they are goofy dorks which they don't stop being just to create an image but that's just one small side of their lives. Their deep ways of thinking are thoroughly articulated in their music and that's the root reason for their success accompanied with easily above 10 other factors. But media won't acknowledge it cause then people will dive deeper into their artistry or even if they don't will atleast put some respect instead. The industry and media doesn't want that cause putting them into a cringe box makes it easy to play prejudice.

I'm 33 and had never been a fan of anyone till 3 years ago, when I came accros them. I am invested in them in ways I never thought I would be in anyone, certainly not a "star". I honestly am sometimes a little scared of how much they mean to me today, all 7 of them. I deeply care about them. They changed a lot of things in my life, made me a better person I believe. I feel like I own it to them, to better myself. I have friends that are Army too, and they too, grew thanks to BTS... They are rolemodels to a lot of us, yes but they really are confort for me. They feel like home. They've shared the good, the bad. They've showed us that u can still be good to people that are bad to u. To be the bigger person. To be kind to everyone, ourself first. Even for someone like me, who's known about and followed Pharrell since The Neptunes, am thankful he got this opportunity to speak with someone with such passion and experience in the industry. Thank you, Rolling Stone, for setting this up.

The fact that Pharrell took this moment and platform to shine a light on some of the horrific things the Asian American community has been going through... he's a real one for that. That's something even a lot of K-pop/BTS fans, imo, haven't really stepped up to do. Loving Korean culture, food, music, dramas, etc. isn't isolated. You have to care about the people. You *have* to care that they're suffering from daily racism. Otherwise, it's all superficial. It's all meaningless appropriation.

Pharrell makes such and interesting point about bts's humility, which i think has a lot to do with them working as a group and trusting each other. When you can face the reality every day that you couldnt have done this on your own, that music is collaborative and you need people in the booth and on the stage with you to make it happen, its hard to have an ego trip. Working in a group and a team makes that constant force to keep you from convincing yourself that its all on you: shared responsibility, shared accomplishments, shared drawbacks. I'm so glad the bts members have each other.

Namjoon presents himself as very humble in the interview. He is a leader of a Korean band with millions of followers and i sense him sitting down and asking essential questions to Pharrell whom he sees as more of a senior. And Pharrell on the other hand respects Joon for his musical identity, passion, his views of music, and BTS' achievements.

They did not let fame change their views or cloud their judgement when it comes to making the kind of music they like. I cried hearing Joon say what if I don't like music anymore? It is in his blood; it is part of who he is. But it is ok to try different things in life too, I will still be supporting him and the other members no matter what direction they take or go and take it life. I am a die-hard Army for life! the interview feels genuine and I can see how Namjoon really feels. It must be a lot of pressure having to keep the image that social media has given them, I would also start to get confused along the way because he started off as someone who loves music not someone who is a social figure who is now being called to give speech’s and meet presidents. I would have an identity crisis. I’m really excited to hear Namjoons solo and I hope Pharrell is on the album as well.

I've only guessed at the thoughts rm has had about taking his solo time in all of what's going on for BTS, to know it's really exactly the mindset he has is some what comforting as a fan. As ARMY , BTS fans have always respected RM for his work and for what bangtan has stood for as an idol group from south Korea and generally as Asians in a very harsh industry like music is, that have taken platform in very political aspects as well. It's not the things they were expecting as just another group in the world but became so much more as a spotlight expansion in a human socially interactive way.
