I got invited to Japan! The Japanese TV show called "Who Wants to go to Japan" finds people who have an interest in some part of Japanese culture and invites them to Japan to experience that culture in person for the first time. In last week's Japan series video, I explained how I got on the show, and this week it's finally time... to head to JAPAN!! Follow along as I travel halfway around the globe to visit the Koriyama Goldfish Museum in Yamatokoriyama near Osaka (the second largest prefecture in Japan).
The museum has TONS of great goldfish artifacts including the oldest goldfish book in existence, the pickled remains of goldfish that were owned by the Emperor of Japan 70 years ago, a newspaper clipping from the first time goldfish were exported from Japan to the US, and more! There's also a goldfish market at the Koriyama Goldfish Museum where breeders from the surrounding areas bring their goldfish to be sold to the public, so you'll get to see tons of goldfish varieties from ranchu to bubble eyes and everything in-between.
This video is the second in a series about my Japan goldfish trip. Tune in next Friday to see my very unexpected visit to an unconventional petting zoo inside a shopping mall in Japan where they had kangaroos, iguanas, an alpaca, and even cats and dogs?!

Okay, look, for all of you who are commenting that "what do you expect from a large goldfish facility?" or "you're being too judgmental" or straight-out rude comments of Jennie being hypocritical due to her fish room crash, stop.
I worked and lived near a Korean koi and goldfish marketplace in my childhood, and they had the best care available. They had a small disaster of ich through the ponds, and I remember my family and the owners working tirelessly to save those fish from death. Most of them did succumb to the illness; however, we managed to save about half of them with medications and just plain careful observations. And why did we spend thousands of dollars on fish? Because we were determined to sell goldfish in the highest quality. Most marketplaces have a main goal to sell in the highest quality. And guess what? The other goldfish sellers around us, they did the same as we did when they had disasters. And why? Because we also cared about goldfish as well. These are living, breathing creatures and whether we are selling them or not in a large facility, we care for creatures.
Not am I only shocked about the conditions that these goldfish are living in, I am even more shocked by the comments written here. As a fellow fish keeper and goldfish marketplace worker, I can truly conclude that Jennie is a great goldfish keeper. Why? She has the compassion, the knowledge and the experience. It is amazing how far she went to medicate her own fish, not giving up even when there was no hope because she cared. And caring is what defines most breeders and keepers. She is far different from the marketplace workers here, because she tried to save them. That is what sets the two apart.

I’m not disagreeing but I imagine a korean goldfish and koi marketplace has more modern values than one of japan that has had traditions for hundreds of years of methods of goldfish culling/keeping. This is coming from a korean btw not some rando bullshit history teacher

They probably just need to hire another employee or two. We're understaffed where I work. I bet they're understaffed where you work and if I had to take a guess it's probably true where most people work. Business owners miss the forest for the trees sometimes. Unfortunately in this situation living things are involved. Pop into your local Petco and have a look at their betta fish. I'm guessing you'll find all sorts of issues with them and I'm told that they don't usually stay there for more than two weeks. Understaffing is also part of the unemployment problem but that's a different rant.

And not being able to do anything to help.😢 I know there are more videos to come and I truly hope that they took you to some of the better places that are in the more Southern mointain parts of the island. There were some of the most beautiful beautiful beautiful locations in the Kyoto prefecture. there's a Temple where monks tend to the most gorgeous goldfish I have ever seen. One thing I did notice is they tend to be a lot more attentive to the koi in that country than the goldfish. This is just my personal experience but it was something I took notice of. I'm still very happy that you were able to go on this trip.

to the people who are like 'it's a large scale facility what do you expect?' Yes. Every large scale operation is gonna have sick animals but it's about the care they have for the fish. These fish aren't being treated or removed from healthy fish and there are far more unhealthy fish than healthy fish.

The parasite/disease you got in your fish room was a freak thing. A rather tricky one to treat too.
What is going on at the place featured in this video IS laziness. Look.. I get it... thousands of fish.. and the prospect of making fish stronger by seeing which ones can withstand poor conditions. But there is downright laziness being displayed at this place. Some of these illnesses take awhile to get so bad... which tells us that water conditions are really never very good there.

Jennie, Sorry I'm a little behind on current events with youtube but I just watched this video and the latest one of your japan visit series. I am a Filipino American born in Sasebo, Japan but grew up in Colorado since 1992. I'm so jellie you had the opportunity to visit Japan! Seeing all those dead fish breaks my heart and is more of a reason why I should support Japanese imported goldfish! I also read a useful comment of a Japanese born goldfish lover explaining how the farms work and why sooo many fish die from this type of environment in a large scale. I can understand why they do what they do but at least have the courtesy to clean up the dead fish before film crews came in to film everything.

It was an eye opener! But it also depends on the place I think. This place was actually a goldfish market where local breeders brought their fish to be sold. I am surprised they would take you to a place that had so many sick fish. I understand it is a famous Goldfish museum, but since it is shouldn't the fish look and be better then any other place? To me it sounds and looks like they either don't really know how to care for the goldfish, realize they are sick, or they just don't care.

Did you ask them about the mortality rates?
Disease issues they have and how they deal with them?
Ben interesting to hear their side of the story.
I use to work at a salmon hatchery. It was normal to pick 10-30 dead fry out from a pond of 5000 fish a day. Much more then that we would have tested them for whatever illness they had and treated them.
But the mortality was primarily just the weakest ones dying off from natural selection.
Just a bit of my history. To say I can see both sides.
I agree the fish in the tanks were pretty sad looking.
If you did ask about the disease and mortality info let us know.

Waylon Jeffrey's to us I don't think Jenny would ask these questions during her tour because of these scenarios I think because:
Since she's a tourist from a foreign country, they can't explain deeper details.
She's speaking English and more likely the workers don't understand her language.
The farmers were on their butts trying their best to acclimate the pond that was there for generations, and then took a break from watching the goldfish 金魚.

The animal cruelty on this video was insane. Poor babies, no animals deserve to be floating lifeless at the top of the tank.. also as an alpaca owner and lover I just want to say that at the end of your video you say "an alpaca" alpacas should never be kept alone as it gives them severe depression. Sorry to be such a downer, I love your videos, please keep doing everything you do for your fisheys

To be honest, All of people dont know how to properly take care of Goldfish . Even in some Pet stores , Goldfish are already sick . The reason behind this is that goldfish are there for commercial purposes . They dont necessary live in the best conditions. We have to remember that they just want money. They cant really take care of each fish. Thats the reality.I know it sucks to see them in that condition as a goldfish keeper. We do the best to keep our goldfish to live in the right condition .

thats the difference between a hobbyist and a business as hobbyist we dont put a price on our pets. businesses put a dollar value on animals and use the most cost effective ways to produce and provide those animal. from a hobbyist point of view alot of what they do seems unethical but from a business point of view they are not pets or animals they are a goods that are bought and sold.

I think the problems with the unhealthy fishes are due culture, funding and partially lack of exposure. Most of these kinds of places in Japan are run by family and friends. They don't generate a lot of revenue that could be spent on the labour and equipment needed to keep that much fish in tip top conditions. I agree though that they shouldn't be keeping that many fish if it's beyond their capability to care for them. But that judgement comes from a different culture and background. As hobbyists in the west, we often see these creatures as pets and less so as livestock.

Gold fish are such a over looked thing that most people don't realize have a deep history. A lot of things are like that too, not just goldfish. Everything has a story to tell, you just have to acknowledge it and take the time to really research into it.

I'd rather tell the truth in a tactful way than lie to my viewers. This goldfish market knew that myself and the TV crew was coming to film that day... they had every opportunity to at least try to remove the dead and dying fish from sight, but they didn't. As a side note, none of the places I visited in Japan were sponsors of mine.

I follow your videos and I like them but I feel that this time you were complaining so much even on the hotel and you judged them so much to the point where it seemed like you didn't stop to think of the amount of fish they have to care go even though you yourself lost almost all of your fish recently. I think you should have been polite and even maybe included the owners or the other people from the show instead of just walking around the facility like a critic I feel and I don't say this in a mean way I'm sure you are a great person but I feel you were rude
