The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

It is 2023 and tone deaf producers and sound engineers at the record companies are "fixing" these live performances. They are applying auto tuning and pitch correction to our best music of the 60's 70's and 80's!! There is NOTHING like live performances from those days and they are being ruined. Your ears are not failing you, AI is destroying our early music!

On Sunday December 17, 1967, Spanky and our Gang, performed, Lazy Day, on the Ed Sullivan Show. I missed it as I landed in Bien Hoa Air Base in the wee hours to begin my first tour of duty in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. So I am just finding that out now as I just watched it.
Flash forward to December, 1968. I missed this performance too coming back from Vietnam as I had to spend a few more extra days in-country in order to get a five month early out. So after the few days were up, I came home on leave for 30 days, just before Christmas 1968, to return to Vietnam in mid January, 1969.
This song got a lot of air play in the winter/spring of 1969 on AFVN. This was my best friend's song. We were assigned to a rifle company in the central highlands and I was the company medic. He used to get up on a table at an EM club and sing it as it was playing on a juke box.
In time, the rifle company disbanded and everyone was reassigned elsewhere. However, we continued to remain in contact, as he was engaged and wanted me to be his best man at his wedding after we both got out.
As it turned out, he was KIA on 8 June 1969 in Tay NInh Province. Losing my best friend was something I still carry to this day. So whenever I hear this song, it remind me of him. If you can, look up his name on the virtual wall. His name is Thomas W Strathmann and he was from Beaver Falls, PA.

I was watching this live when it aired in 1968, as a nine year old. Now, across the gulf of time, I start my day by viewing this little masterpiece. It encapsulates the musical performances from the Ed Sullivan show: superb showmanship, unique sets, and vocal perfection by the lead singer. Johnny Maestro had grown up right there in Manhattan, and had been a teen idol just a few years before. This song was a big hit, and turned out to have been Brooklyn Bridge's high water mark. We can only imagine if Johnny had been given additional viable material to record.

Definitely! Fewer than half of the musicians on Sullivan were "trusted" to deliver top-notch performances, I'd guess, and had to lip-sync. Not sure why, as most of the groups gigged regularly and could kick out their tunes in their sleep. This is a wonderful performance--better than the record, IMO.

Hey, The Ed Sullivan Show, I think it would be great to add Ed's introductions to the acts; no need to make him invisible. My family watched him every Sunday evening at, I believe, 8PM. We never knew what we would see (aside from Topo Gigio) but it was always great. The Beatles... spinning plates..... circus performers.... stand-up. :)
I think the trumpet player was quite nervous on his wee solo; a couple of slightly sour notes... BUT what has me totally impressed is the way that Johnny Maestro just sails past the hiccups and blows the performance right out of the park. So much rightly-placed confidence. To be able to sing like that!
