    In a way this makes me sad. I am a kid of the ‘70’s. When I watch this video it reminds me of a time that was pretty cool. The culture back then was laid back and humble. Living in today’s America doesn’t resemble or feel the same way, and anyone younger wouldn’t have the slightest idea what I’m talking about.
    Now I’m bald and gray where I do have hair, lol. These times in the video are long gone and never to return. It’s just the progression of things, really. I’m glad I lived back then, but also bummed that it’s only in my memory.

    I saw them in 1976 open for John Denver at the Cow Palace in SF. Before they performed this song (which was just starting to get airplay) one of the female vocalists explained that the title came from a menu they had seen when they were on tour a year before. According to the story, they pulled into a greasy spoon to refuel the bus and eat lunch, and the cafe menu had a special of the day called "Afternoon Delight". She said they all had a good laugh, and ordered it, but that it wasn't very good. She continued the story to say that "that's when we decided to write a song about what Afternoon Delight could be, would be, and should be." The crowd roared. The song was playing on the radio later that night as we drove home. And the rest is history. One of the top 10 songs of that year, if not the decade.

    • @bajikimran2304
      @bajikimran2304 Před 2 měsíci +3

      One of the men in the group helped John Denver write the song, 'Take Me Home Country Roads". At the time, neither Denver, nor the guy who helped him write the song had ever been to Virginia. Many people think the song is about the state of West Virginia, but it's actually about the western part of the state of Virginia. You know because the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah River, which are mentioned prominently in the song are not located in the state of West Virginia, but are found in the western part of the state of Virginia.

      @Lanier2369 Před 7 měsíci +1

      Well ya I'll give the idea that the lyrics were clean and not derogatory. But they were still singing about having sex in the afternoon which was a bit of a controversial thing to sing about. This was a time when it was still a bit shocking to acknowledge anything to do with sex anyways plus the idea of being free enough about sex to admit that it can be done anytime. Don't get me wrong I don't think it's bad to sing about any of that but I think it's funny that a band singing about having sex could be seen at the time as pure enough to be had on a family friendly event since it shows they didn't get the whole point of the song. And don't get me wrong. I'm not against the point of the song. I don't take away from the talent etc. But this song isn't as pure as it seems, as people then (and obviously now still it seems) think it is.

      I picked up on the sexual lyrics right away, and I bought the single so I could torment my dad with it. Drove him absolutely crazy, as I knew it would. He especially hated this song because it was everything he loved: the lilting, multi-part harmonies, the catchy melody and the light rock sound could not have been better tailored to his musical taste, but he HATED anything about sex being sung or discussed in public (except for a half-hour each week on ‘All In The Family’, for some reason). So he thought this song was disgusting. I could put him in a bad mood just by spinning the record in my room, with the stereo set at a normal volume. He’d lose his shit, haha. Fun times!
